II) Quick Start
Turning the Camera On
Press and ho d the Se ect button (/)for 2 seconds. The LCD screen
shou d turn on and the se ect button shou d turn green, the remaining battery charge wi be
shown in the top eft, and the remaining memory card storage wi be shown in the right
hand corner.
Taking Video Footage
1. Aim at what you want to record.
2. Press the Se ect button to start recording (the unit shou d b eep, and the ight on the
se ect button turn red.).
3. Press Se ect button again to stop recording (Low pitch b eep, ight turns green)
Ca turing Photos
1. Press the Menu button.
2. Use the Up and Down arrows to high ight the settings option, and press the Se ect button.
3. The screen wi show a ist of settings, high ight camera options and press se ect . The
camera options submenu shou d appear, high ight record mode and press se ect to change to
photo mode. Press the menu button three times to return to viewing mode. Aim at what you
wish to capture and press the se ect button (One b eep, and the ight turns red). The picture
is captured as soon as the ight turns red, a though it stays on for a second whi e saving.

III) Camera Precautions
Notice the following guidelines when using your camera
• The X170 is shock resistant, not shock proof.
• For your safety, do not press the buttons on the camera during sports activities.
• Do not p ace the camera in areas prone to dust or damp for extended periods of time.
• Do not eave the camera in p aces exposed to extreme y high temperatures, such as
under direct sun ight, for extended periods of time. This may affect the camera housing and
interna components.
• C ean the ens with a soft c oth to remove fingerprints or dust.
• We recommend using Lithium AA batteries for ongest ife.
• The camera has a working temperature range of -10°C to 40°C The working temperature
range of a norma A ka ine AA battery is 0°C to 40°C. Be ow 0°C a ways use Lithium
batteries.
• Turn the camera off before removing the batteries or memory card. The card and the
data may be damaged if the memory card is inserted or removed whi e the camera is
sti on.
• Remove the batteries and memory card before storing the camera for ong periods of
time. Keep it in a we -venti ated p ace to prevent mou d.

Water roof Feature
The X170 action camera is waterproof up to 0.5m. Drift Innovation wi not assume
any responsibi ity for camera ma function caused by iquid entering the camera as a
resu t of misuse by the user.
Precaution:
Ensure the battery hatch is correct y and comp ete y ocked to keep
iquid out of the camera.
Liquid may get inside the camera if the latch is not locked ro erly
• If the camera gets wet, wipe the iquid off as soon as possib e with a dry c oth.
• Other camera accessories may not be waterproof.
• Ensure the battery hatch is correct y and proper y ocked.
Using the camera in cold weather
• We recommend using Energizer ithium batteries in co d weather.
Don't use the camera in extreme tem eratures as this may cause the
camera to malfunction.
Attention:
• Non-rechargeab e batteries are not to be recharged;
• Rechargeab e batteries are to be removed from the camera before being charged;
• Rechargeab e batteries are on y to be charged under adu t supervision;
• The supp y termina s are not to be short-circuited;
• Exhausted batteries are to be removed from the camera.

V) Mounting the Camera
The camera can be mounted in a number of ways using the straps, mounts and ve cro patch
provided. P ease fo ow the methods of mounting as suggested be ow:
Fixing the camera onto the universal cli
1. Aign the threaded side of the universa c ip with the thread on the underside of
the camera body.
2. Twist the screw thread in a c ockwise direction.
3. As the universa c ip tightens against the body of the camera, adjust the ang e of
the universa c ip to provide the desired ang e.
4. Tighten fu y the screw on the universa c ip. This shou d now fit firm y against the
camera body.
Mounting the camera using the headstra
1. Attach the gogg e mount to the e astic headstrap as shown in the i ustration.
2. Adjust the diameter of the head strap by s iding the p astic buck es.
3. S ide the camera (with universa c ip attached) into the gogg e mount unti the two
arms on the c ip, 'c ick' into p ace.
Mounting the camera on a goggle stra
1. Attach the gogg e strap to your gogg es.
2. S ide the camera (with universa c ip attached) into the gogg e mount unti the two
arms on the c ip 'c ick' into p ace.
Mounting the camera on a helmet
1. Attach one side of the ve cro strips to the underside of the he met mount.
2. Position the he met mount against your he met and find the optimum mounting
position on the he met.
3. Ensure the surface where you wish to attach the he met mount is c ean, oi and
dust free and dry. Attach the remaining ve cro strips onto the he met.
4. Push the he met mount onto the he met unti the ve cro is firm y attached.
5. S ide the camera (with universa c ip attached) into the he met mount unti the two
arms on the c ip 'c ick' into p ace.

Mounting the camera on a vented cycle or kayak helmet
1.
Position the he met mount in the top or side of your he met and find the optimum
mounting position on the he met.
2.
Use the short strap to attach the he met mount using the s its in the he met mount
to thread the strap through. It may be necessary, depending on the position, to
use a section of the ve cro strip to ensure the mount and strap firm y fit onto the
he met.
3.
S ide the camera (with universa c ip attached) into the he met mount unti the two
arms on the c ip 'c ick' into p ace.
Mounting the camera on a handlebar
1. Unscrew the nut from the hand ebar mount and remove the screw.
2. Fit the hand ebar mount onto the hand ebar, ensuring that the rubber pad is
positioned around the hand ebar, between the hand ebar and mount.
3. Re-insert the screw and nut and tighten unti the mount fits tight y onto the
hand ebar.
4. S ide the camera (with universa c ip attached) into the hand ebar mount unti the
two arms on the c ip 'c ick' into p ace.
Mounting the camera onto a tri od, camera- or suction mount
1. The camera has a standard tripod thread embedded into the camera body. This is
the same thread into which the universa c ip norma y screws into.
2. Thread the camera onto a tripod, camera mount or suction mount (not inc uded)
or any other mount with a standard camera thread.
Adjusting the angle of the camera
1. Unc ip the camera with universa c ip from the mount you are using by pressing
the arms on the universa c ip.
2. Untwist the universa c ip by rotating the screw anti-c ockwise.
3. When the universa c ip is sufficient y far unscrewed, rotate the universa c ip to the
correct ang e and tighten the screw again.

Ti s on mounting the camera
•Great video footage genera y features another person or object. In skiing or
snowboarding, this can be the user fo owing a friend. In motorsports, this can be
the ferring of a bike or car bonnet.
•Position yourse f exact y how you wou d be during your activity to ensure that the
camera is correct y a igned to fi m the best video footage.
•Because of the wide ang e ens, within reason, the camera wi capture exact y
what you want if pointed in the right direction.
•A great video shot is a so the direct user shot. For examp e in mountain biking,
having the camera mounted on the hand ebars but pointing back at the user, gives
great action video footage.
•Ensure that in whichever way you have the camera mounted, that the camera is
fitted firm y to reduce the risk of the camera being ost.

VI) Camera Usage
a) Battery Installation
Installing the camera batteries
1. Un ock the rear of the camera by using your thumb to push up the rear c ip.
2. Once the rear hatch is open, s ide the battery door up to un ock and ift up the
hatch.
3. Insert 2 AA a ka ine or ithium batteries into the battery s ot with the po arity in the
direction as i ustrated on the inside of the rear door.
4. C ose the battery door and s ide the battery door to ock it in p ace.
Notes:
•When the battery eve is ow, the battery icon on the LCD screen wi change in
co our to red. P ease ensure that you save your recording as soon as you notice
the ow battery indicator and then proceed to change the o d batteries for new
ones.
•Do not mix o d and new batteries. Rep ace both batteries at the same time.
•Do not mix a ka ine, standard (carbon-zinc), ithium or rechargeab e (nicke -
cadmium) batteries. On y batteries of the same or equiva ent type are to be used
together.
•Remove the batteries if the camera is not going to be used for extended periods of
time.
•
A ka ine, ithium and rechargeab e batteries can be used with the product. For
optimum performance and battery ife, however it is recommended that you use
ithium AA batteries
.
Always u load video footage to your PC rior to re lacing batteries to
avoid memory loss

b) Installing the remote control battery
The remote contro is supp ied with its battery a ready fitted. The remote contro is as such
ready to use from purchase. Shou d you suspect that the remote contro battery has ost its
power, fo ow the fo owing instructions:
1. Using a screwdriver, remove the four screws fixing the remote contro battery
cover. This shou d uncover the mechanics of the remote contro and the battery.
2. Carefu y remove the battery and rep ace with a new one.
3. Fix the remote contro battery cover again with the four screws.
Note: Take care not to damage any of the waterproof sea when rep acing the battery.
Turning the camera on
1. Press and ho d the Se ect button for 2 seconds. The LED wi ight up green to
indicate that the camera is turned on. The LCD screen wi indicate how much
battery and memory is remaining.
2. For your safety, do not press any buttons on the camera unit itse f during any
sporting activities.
Turning the camera off
1. Press and ho d the Se ect button for 5 seconds. The LCD screen wi turn off as wi
the LED on the contro pane .
Note:
•Ensure that the camera is turned off when inserting and removing an SD card. The
card and the data on the card may be damaged if the SD card is inserted or
removed whi e the camera is turned on.
•The camera does not have the abi ity to recharge batteries. Do not attempt this as
it may resu t in damage or injury.

c) Camera Lens Rotation
A unique feature about the camera is the abi ity of the user to manua y rotate the camera
ens to fit their mounting situation. The camera is waterproof to 1m and this is not affected
by the rotation of the camera ens.
How the lens rotation works
•The camera ens rotates separate y from the main camera body. This feature
a ows users to a ign the camera ens to get the video footage you require
independent y of how you have mounted the camera.
•Whi st ho ding the camera body in one hand, use your index finger and thumb on
your other hand to grab the camera ens firm y. Twist the camera ens into the
desired ang e.
•The camera ens can not be rotated through 360 degrees. Rather there is a hard
stop that spans approximate y 20 degrees. This stop has been positioned so as to
impact east on your mounting options.
•Do not force the camera ens rotation. If excess resistance is experienced, doub e
check that you have not reached the camera rotation stop.
When you will need to rotate the camera lens
•In certain circumstances, the best way to mount your camera safe y and secure y
wi mean that the camera ens is not correct y a igned.
•You can twist the camera ens c ockwise or anti-c ockwise to rotate the ens into
the position you want.
Note:
•The camera ens can not be rotated through 360 degrees. Rather there is a hard
stop that spans approximate y 20 degrees. This stop has been positioned so as to
impact east on your mounting options.

SD card insertion / removal
This camera can take SD cards in size up to 16GB.
Insert:
1. Turn the camera off.
2. Un ock the rear cover to open the camera
3. Insert the SD card into the SD card s ot, ensuring that the SD card connect
termina s are facing up. Insert it carefu y and comp ete y unti it c ick into p ace.
4. C ose the rear cover.
Remove:
1. Turn the camera off.
2. Un ock the rear cover to open the camera
3. Push the card unti it c icks and then pu the card out.
4. C ose the rear cover.

conditions and the type of card):

Taking video footage
1. Fo ow the steps under 'Mounting Description' to correct y mount the camera.
2. Ensure that the camera has been set into the 'Video' mode using the Settings
menu.
3. Press the Se ect button on the contro pane to start recording (one beeping
sound). The LED on the contro pane wi change from green to red to indicate
that the camera is recording.
4. Press the SELECT button again to stop recording (one beeping sound). The LED on
the contro pane wi change from red to green to indicate that the camera has
stopped recording but is sti on.
Warning:
When the ow battery warning appears p ease change the batteries in the camera to avoid
any accidenta memory oss or fi e corruption.
Taking hotos
1. Fo ow the steps under 'Mounting Description' to correct y mount the camera.
2. Ensure that the camera has been set into the 'Photo' mode using the Settings
menu.
3. Press the SELECT button on the contro pane to take a photo (one beeping
sound). The LED on the contro pane wi brief y change from green to red to
indicate that the camera is capturing the photo. As soon as the photo has been
captured, the LED on the contro pane wi change from red to green.
Using the remote control
1. Ensure that the remote contro has been enab ed using the Settings menu.
2. Attached the remote contro to your wrist, hand ebar or jacket using the short
ve cro strap. Ensure the remote contro is tight y fastened so there is no risk of
osing the remote contro .
3. If the camera is in the video mode, press the RECORD button to start recording
(one beeping sound). The green LED on the contro pane wi change to red. Press
the STOP button to stop recording (one beeping sound). The LED on the contro
pane wi change back from red to green.
4. If the camera is in the photo mode, press the RECORD button to capture a photo
(one beeping sound).
Note:
1. Defau t reso ution is 720 x 480 pixe s.
2. If the recording time is ong, the video fi e may be separated into mu tip e fi es
automatica y. The user does not need to monitor this process, the camera wi resume
fi ming once the fi e is saved (after a coup e of seconds). P ease note that the time duration
needed to save video fi es may vary depending upon the ength of the fi e. P ease be patient
during this process.

1. To enter one of the menus, use the UP and DOWN buttons to position the marker
over the icon / menu option you require and press the SELECT button.
2. The icons for Videos and Photos wi adjust automatica y to i ustrate the number
of Videos / Photos the camera has saved onto your chosen memory.
3. To exit any of the menu settings or options, press the MENU button unti you
revert to the Menu you require or reach the screen showing the camera current
image.

Videos
Once you have se ected the Video option, you wi see individua thumbnai images of the
videos that are recorded on the cameras chosen memory.
The information presented with the thumbnai images wi be:
•The number of the video out of the tota number of videos (e.g. 1/10)
•The actua video fi e name
•The video duration (hh:mm:ss)
To p ay or de ete any one of the videos:
1. Scro through the thumbnai images, unti you reach the thumbnai of the chosen
video.
2. Press the SELECT button on the contro pane .
3. Se ect either the View or De ete option by using the UP or DOWN buttons.
4. If de eting, you wi be asked to confirm your se ection.
Photos
Once you have se ected the Photo option, you wi see individua thumbnai images of the
photos that are saved on the cameras chosen memory.
The information presented with the thumbnai images wi be:
•The number of the photos out of the tota number of photos (e.g. 1/10)
•The actua photo fi e name
To view or de ete the photos:
•Scro through the thumbnai images, unti you reach the thumbnai of the chosen
photo.
•To de ete the photo, press the SELECT button. You wi be asked to confirm your
se ection.

VIII) Com uter Requirements and Technical
Connecting to a com uter
You can copy your recorded video footage to a PC by connecting the camera to your PC
using the USB cab e.
1. With the camera turned off, connect it to a PC via the USB cab e.
2. Switch the camera on
3. The USB icon shou d appear on the camera LCD screen and the camera shou d
become recognised by your PC as an externa memory device.
4. The camera wi now be connected to your PC and the photos and videos are
avai ab e for review. To confirm this, the camera shou d appear as DRIFT X170 in
your 'My Computer' fo der on your PC.
5. Open the DRIFT X170 fo der. In it you wi find a sub-fo der ca ed DCIM.
6. Open the DCIM fo der and you wi find a fo der ca ed '100DRIFT' which contains
a photos and videos recorded on the SD card. If a ot of photos and videos are
recorded there wi be mu tip e fo ders ca ed 100DRIFT, 101DRIFT, etc.
7. Copy the desired video to your PC.
Playing and editing video footage on a Com uter
1. The users computer may not have a the codec’s required for p ayback.
2. If your experience difficu ties p aying c ips, down oad free media p ayer VLC from
www.video an.org
3. If you are experiencing prob ems with p ayback or video editing and you do not
wish to use VLC p ayer, you wi need to down oad the atest Codec packs. It is
suggested that you down oad and insta FFDshow from http://www.free-
codecs.com/FFDshow_down oad.htm
Playing back video footage onto a TV
1. With the camera turned off, connect it to a TV using the AV cab e. If your TV does
not have phono connectors, you may require a Photo to Scart adaptor.
2. Switch the camera on.
3. Once booted up, you shou d now be ab e to see the camera sensor image direct y
on your TV.
4. Use the camera in exact y the same way as if you were viewing the images / menu
icons on the camera LCD screen.
5. For instance, when p aying back a video, rather than it appearing on the bui t-in
LCD screen, you wi see it on the TV screen.

Looking after your camera
The camera is specifica y designed for extreme sports. Whatever your vice, the X170 shou d
a ow you to capture some great video footage.
Inevitab y, the camera wi get dirty or wet. A though this is not an issue, it is recommended
that you c ean the X170 whenever it gets dirty or wet.
Be ow are some out ine detai s on how to do this:
Cleaning the lens and LCD screen
•Be carefu not to scratch the camera ens whi st c eaning it.
•Wipe off any surface mud or water from the ens with a damp c oth
•Then use a dry scratch-proof c oth to po ish the ens
Cleaning the seals
•To ensure that the camera remains waterproof to 1m, it may be necessary from
time to time to c ean the contact surfaces around the rear camera hatch sea .
•This can be done by wiping a damp c oth around the sea . Ensure that this does
not eave excessive water on the sea . Let it air dry.
•To add extra sea , run a bit of vase ine around the sea from time to time.

What ty e of SD Card does the camera su ort?
The X170 supports SD cards from a eading brands, but we recommend c ass 6 cards for
video. The unit is a so compatib e with SDHC cards by eading brands
How does the remote control work?
The remote contro works using radio frequency (RF) to communicate direct y with the
camera unit.
The remote is RF based, rather than infrared or IR (such as other he met cameras).
You do not need to point the remote at the camera. As ong as the remote is within a 5m
radius of the camera, the camera wi pick up the remote contro signa
How long will the batteries last?
We advise using either Energizer Lithium AA batteries or 1800mAh NiMH rechargeab e AA
batteries. Using brand new Energizer Lithium batteries you wi get 4 and a ha f hours worth
of battery ife. The "try-me" batteries inc uded in the camera kit as purchased wi give you
30 minutes of battery ife. Using Durace AA batteries, you wou d get approximate y 60
minutes of battery ife. U timate y battery ife is dependent upon operating temperature. In
co d environments (e.g. skiing / snowboarding), Lithium batteries are ess affected and
remain most of their battery ife.
How do I get more battery life out of my camera?
The bui t-in LCD screen consumers power so one of the best ways to save battery ife is to
use the menu settings and go into the Power Options section. You wi have the abi ity to
change the LCD screen settings such that the LCD screen switches off, whi st recording. This
wi ensure that whi st the camera sti is ready to start recording or is recording, the LCD
screen wi not be drawing power. For users with cigarette ighter adaptors (motorsports /
motorbikes), it is possib e to power the camera direct y from the cigarette ighter without
using any batteries. You wi need a USB cigarette ighter adaptor for this. Note that we
recommend Energizer Lithium or rechargeab e 1888mAh NiMh batteries for best battery ife.
The batteries provided in the box are "Try Out" batteries which on y ho d approx 30mins of
ife to get you going with the camera.

The videos and hotos give me a slight fisheye effect. Is this right?
Yes it is. We specia y se ected a 170 degree ens to provide users with the rea y quirky wide
ang e that was rea y prominent in the ear y days of he met cameras (especia y in
skateboarding). The effect wi be ess pronounced on objects in the distance and more
pronounced on objects c oser to the camera ens.
If you want a narrower ang e of view or ess funky image, then this may not be the product
for you.
What are the dimensions of the video camera?
The dimensions of the camera are 133 (L) x 50 (D) x 33 (W) mm and those of the remote
contro are 52 (L) x 40 (W) x 13 (D) mm.
How far will the remote control work?
The wire ess remote contro uses radio frequency signa to transmit the 'START' / 'STOP'
messages to the camera. The range is 5m.
What is the biggest SD card I can use?
We specify that the argest SD card size is 16Gb. However we have conducted successfu
tests with eading brands using 32GB cards too. Note that fi e sizes can quick y become very
arge as the unit uses approx 1Gb for 30 minutes of high reso ution video.
Can I connect my camera to a tri od or suction cu ?
Yes. The X170 is the on y camera on the market that comes with a bui t-in 8mm / 1/4"
fema e camera thread. You can therefore fix the camera to any tripod, suction mount (eg
Panavise 809) or other camera mount with the 8mm / 1/4" camera thread. These mounts
can be purchased from a our eading dea ers or camera stores.
Can I ower my camera from a cigarette lighter ada tor?
Yes. In order to do this connect the USB cab e into the camera and into a USB cigarette
ighter adaptor. The unit wi then take its power from your bike or car battery. Note that
a though this a ows you to power the camera unit, it does not recharge rechargeab e
batteries if you are using them. You can buy the USB cigarette ighter adaptor from a of our
eading dea ers or from e ectrica stores.

X. Troubleshooting
There's no dis lay
•Are the batteries proper y insta ed?
•Do the batteries need rep acing?
After the camera is connected to my PC, it cannot find the new drive in
the 'My Com uter' folder
•Ensure each end of the camera USB cab e is proper y and firm y connected.
•Ensure your USB port is working proper y. Try connecting another USB device into
the port. If the other device does not work, the USB port may have a ma function.
In this case, contact your system manufacturer or the manufacturer of your USB
card.
I can't ca ture video footage
•Ensure there is enough space on the interna memory of camera or the SD card;
the disp ay wi te you how much time there is eft for video recording.
•Ensure the SD card is not ocked. The LCD wi disp ay a message if the SD card is
ocked.
The remaining time is not accurate
•The remaining time is an estimate.
•The remaining time depends not on y on the time recorded, but on the co our
density of the video footage. Under conditions with high contrast, such as
outdoors, the actua time avai ab e wi be ess than under ow-contrast conditions.
I can't lay the video footage on my television
•Ensure each end of the AV cab e is proper y and firm y connected to the camera
and to your te evision.
•Ensure the camera and te evision are both turned on.
•Ensure you have set the te evision to the AV-mode.
Some ca tured video footage cannot be found when SD card is inserted
•The video footage may be stored on the interna memory. Connect the camera to
your PC without an SD card, and it wi show the fi es in the interna memory.
The sound is very low or there is no sound
•Ensure the audio is on by fo owing the instructions in the Sound Recording
section.
•The camera is specifica y designed for extreme sports and is waterproof, it is for
this reason that we have made the microphone ess sensitive.
I can’t few cli s on my com uter, or I get an error message
•You may have outdated codecs. P ease use VLC p ayer avai ab e from
www.video an.org
•If you sti wish to use WMP or other editing software you need to upgrade your
codec pack. Down oad ffdshow from http://www.free-
codecs.com/FFDshow_down oad.htm and insta the fi e.
I switched my camera off during recording, and the cli recorded is damaged.
•P ease ensure that you stop recording before switching off your camera, as this
can damage the video c ip you are current y recording.
