basicsafetyprecautionsshouldalwaysbeusedwhenusing
powertools,includingwearingsafetyglassesorothersuitable
eyeprotection.Ensurethattheworkareaisclearofallelectri-
calwires,gaslines,waterpipesandotherobstacles.

LOCATION
For shingled pitched roof installation only. Check with local
building code to determine correct use and ventilation
required for your attic.
Solaratticfansget100%oftheiroperationalpowerfromthe
sun,thereforethesolarpanelneedstobeexposedtoasmuch
sunlightaspossible.Southexposureisbest.Ifasouthern
exposureisnotpossible,lookforanothersunnyexposurefor
yourinstallation.Thesolarpanelcanalsobeadjustedto
capturemaximumavailablesunlight.
Avoidpotentialproblemssuchastreesandotherbuildings
shadingtheunitduringcertaintimesoftheday.Avoidinstalling
nearawall,chimneyoranybuildingsectionthatispositioned
higherthanthesolarfan.Thereshouldbeaminimumof
48in(121.9cm)betweenthesolaratticfanandanypossible
obstruction.
INSTALLATION
1. Frominsidetheattic,measuredownfromtheroofpeak
24in(60.96cm)andmarkaspotcenteredbetweentwo
rafters(Fig1).Drillascrewatthispointthroughtheplywood
androofshinglesoitwillbevisiblewhenyouareonthe
roof.
2. Onceontheroof,locatethescrewandattachastringtoit.
Attachapentotheotherendofthestringandadjustthe
stringlengthto6.5in(16.5cm).Marka13in(33cm)
diametercircleontotheroofshingles(Fig2).
IMPORTANT: THE SOLAR ATTIC FAN MUST BE
INSTALLED BETWEEN THE ROOF RAFTERS.
DO NOT CUT THROUGH ANY ROOF RAFTERS.

3. Usingapowerdrillequippedwitha1/2in(1.27cm)drillbit,
makeapilotholeonthecircle.Thenusingareciprocating
saw,cutthehole(Fig.3).Useahammertoclearawayany
remainingpiecesofwoodandshinglefromtheholeafter
cutting.
NEVER CUT THROUGH ANY ROOF RAFTERS.
REMOVE ONLY ROOF SHEATHING.
4. Withautilityknife,cuta5in(12.7cm)slitthroughthe
shinglesattheleftandrightsidesofthemiddleofthehole
(Fig.4).Thisallowsforthefootprintoftheashingtobe
insertedupandundertheshingles.

5. Youwillneedtocutorremovetheroongnailslocated
5in(12.7cm)aboveandtoeachsideoftheholetomake
roomfortheashingtoslidebetweenthefeltpaperandthe
shingles.Insertthereciprocatingsawbladesidewaysinto
oneoftheslitscutpreviously(Fig.5).Cutupandaroundthe
entireareathatwillbecoveredbythefootprintoftheupper
halfoftheashing.
6. Applyacontinuousbeadofroofsealanttotheunderside
perimeterofthesolaratticfan(Fig.6).

7. Turntheatticfanrightsideupandslidetheashingmarked
“UP”throughtheslitsyoucutpreviously.Pushtheashing
undertheshingles(butoverthefeltpaper)untilthefanis
centeredoverthehole(Fig.7).Donotsmearcaulkingonthe
exposedshingles.Thelowerpartoftheashingshouldsit
ontopoftheroofshingles.

8. Usingfour(4)roongnails,securethesolarfantotheroof.
Thesolarfanshouldbesecuredacrossthebottomofthe
ashing.
9. Applywaterproofroongsealanttothenailheads.Use
moreroongnailsasneededtosecureanylooseshingles.
Alwaysapplywaterproofroongsealanttothebackside
ofanylooseshinglesornailsheadsthathavebeenadded
(Fig.8).

10.Loosenthescrewontheclip/screwassemblylocatedon
eachsideofthesolarpanelbracket(Fig.9).Adjustthe
solarpaneltoapositionthatwillcollectthemostsunlight
throughouttheday.Tightenscrewsatthedesiredposition.
11.Toensurewatertightness,roongcaulkingmustbeused
tosealbetweenalltheedgesofthebaseandtheroof,
especiallybottomandsideareasofbasenotcoveredby
shingles(Fig.10).

REPLACE AN EXISTING VENT
Thissolaratticfanisidealforreplacementofanexisting
staticventprovidedtheoriginalatticventhasasimilarlysized
footprint.Thisproductrequiresaroofopeningof12in
(30.48cm)to14in(35.56cm)diameter.Thepositionofthe
existingventalsoneedstobeinasuitablelocation.Conrmthe
correctlocationwiththespecicationsonpage2oftheoriginal
installationinstructions.
1. Beginbyremovingtheexistingatticvent.Pullbackany
shinglessurroundingthebase.Saveshinglesforreuse.Re-
moveanyscrewsornailsthathavebeenusedtofastenthe
atticventtotheroongsubstrate.Cleanthesubstratearea
ofanyoldcement,caulkingorglueorotherdebristoensure
atightsealforthenewsolaratticfanbase.
2. Afterremovalasdescribedabove,followtheinstallation
instructionsinsection6.

Thisproductisguaranteedforve(5)yearsagainstcorrosion
anddefectsinmaterialorworkmanshipwhenusedfornormal
residentialpurposes.Iftheunitshouldfailtooperatecorrectly
within5yearsfromthedateofpurchase,pleasegotoour

obligationistorepairorreplacetheunit.
