Einstein THE MONITOR User manual

Dear EINSTEIN customer!
With the EINSTEIN The Monitor/ The Monitor Woofer, you have acquired that rar-
est of loudspeaker systems –one that conforms to the most stringent standards.
To get the most from it, please take a few leisurely moments and peruse the fol-
lowing instructions.
The Monitor /The Monitor Woofer is a loudspeaker system that deliberately es-
chews frilly features to focus instead on the core essentials:
Realistic reproduction with the utmost fidelity
Rock-solid reliability for years of worry-free service
Extended market value to protect your investment
The EINSTEIN The Monitor /The Monitor Woofer does not sound beautiful, soft or
energetic. Our goal is to design devices that integrate into existing systems with
the absolute minimum of signal degradation or “artistic license“. A loud-
speaker’s job is simple (though by no means easy): make the signal from the
source audible. Even the “world’s best“ Hifi system cannot achieve the best mu-
sical performance if the loudspeaker is not capable of delivering all the details
and dynamics from the amplifier. Any fault of a speaker will limit the perform-
ance of the complete system. Hence your decision to incorporate the EINSTEIN
The Monitor / The Monitor Woofer into your system was a truly informed one.
Congratulations.
We extend our regards from Bochum and wish you much musical satisfaction
from your new EINSTEIN The Monitor / TheMonitor Woofer.

Before you start to connect the EINSTEIN The Monitor / The Monitor Woofer louds-
peaker system to your High End system please read the set up instruction carefully
to achieve the best possible sound with your new High End loudspeaker.
If you feel too stressed to do the set up yourself, please ask your dealer for a profes-
sional set up.

2. IMPORTANT! Unpacking your loudspeakers
Please allow your loudspeakers some time (app. 3-4 hours) to achieve room tem-
perature before playing music.
3. Set up and positioning of The Reference Stands speaker stands
The Reference Stand is the ultimate platform to set up the complete Monitor
speaker system. It is optimized in weight, height and time control to match the out-
standing sound performance of the Monitor Sub system.
When you set up The Reference Stand, please take care, that alls screws are tigh-
tened and that the T-section of the stand is angled backwards, when mounted to
the base plate of the stand.
After the T-section and the base plate are mounted together tightly you can set up
the spikes to the base of the stand. We would advise, that the two spikes at the
front of the base plate should come out a little bit longer in length, compare to the
two spikes at the back of the base plate. This will help you to angle the stand even
a little bit more backwards to optimize the time alignment of the speaker system.
Set up the stands at the right position of the room and take care that the spikes are
adjusted perfectly to the ground, so that no movement and rocking of the stands is
possible.
Please take care to mount The Monitor and The Monitor Woofer cabinets carefully
and tight to the Reference stands. Every movement or rocking of the cabinet will
limit the sound.
4. Set up and positioning of the speakers
After you have taken the stands to their estimated position, you should mount the
cabinets to the stands carefully. The spike in the middle of the platform should be
still out of the base platform while fixing the cabinets to the stand. Best is to place
a piece of carton (an old record sleeve will do) on the base plate of the stand
under the woofer cabinet. Move the back panel of the woofer cabinet towards
the T-section of the stand so that the holes in the T-Section and the ones in the
backpanel match. Then insert the four screws into the holes of the stand so that
these get in contact to the four threads in the back panel. If the position is right
you can screw the screws clockwise to the threads of the back panel.

4
Please take care not to damage any terminal, switch or potentiometer on the
backpanel during the mounting process. Please tighten the screws tight and then
get the record out of the gap of speaker cabinet and base of the stand. You will
notice that there is a little gap now between speaker cabinet and base plate of
the stand. Now you should insert the spike at the middle position of the base plate
into its thread, until the spike has a tight contact to the speaker cabinet at the
bottom. Then tighten this spike with its nut. This spike is to control the resonance
energy of the Sub Bass Cabinet of the Monitor system.
Then mount the Monitor cabinet with the four screws to the Reference Stand on
top of The Monitor Woofer in the same way as describe above. The positioning
(mounting height) of the fullrange cabinet is depending on the distance of your
listening position, as well as on the height of your listening chair/couch. With the
Reference Stand you have the possibility to adjust that perfectly. This is very impor-
tant for time alignment as well as to keep the response energy of the speaker.
Before you move the system to its final position, please take care that all screws
and spikes have the right position and are tight. As mentioned previously, any
rocking or movement of the system, stand or cabinet will limit the sound in terms of
energy, control, time alignment and frequency response. This speaker system is
designed to listen to the drive units only and not to the coloration or oscillation of
the standard speaker cabinets. To achieve this purity in sound, you have to set up
the Monitor Sub Bass System in the right way.
Once you have placed the Monitor System in the final position you can start to
find the right listening angle of the speaker. If you are facing the speakers from
you listening position you should see the full inside of both cabinets just slightly. This
is the position we recommend for most listening rooms, but you might like to try to
turn the speaker more to outside, which will give you more interaction with the
room and less energy in terms of the response level. If you turn the speaker more
to the inside, so that you only can see the front of the speaker (no inside and out-
side of the cabinet anymore) you will achieve less interaction with the room
acoustics in the midrange and high frequency band. This will give you more ener-
gy level and focus from the speaker, but it might be a bit uncomfortable if the
room is a live sounding room.

5
We took great care in terms of design to provide an easy handling of the speaker.
The speaker is an easy load (flat 8 Ohm design) for most amplifiers and can be dri-
ven nicely and effortless. A 6 watt single ended tube amplifier is just as suitable as
an 80 watt transistor amplifier.
The Einstein The Monitor loudspeaker system is a monitor design top speaker (The
Monitor fullrange cabinet) plus either one or two The Monitor Woofer (active sub-
woofer system) which delivers breathtaking results. Due to the rigid and sealed cab-
inet construction of 40mm multi layer plywood the cabinet is vibration-free.
The Monitor / The Monitor Woofer has a perfect phase. This is noticeable when listen-
ing to the speaker. The focus and a three-dimensional image are excellent. Bass is
tight, fast and because of the design with a perfect timing to midrange and
heights. You will be surprised how dynamic this little speaker can perform, even in
the lower frequency range.
5. Connection to the system
The Monitor Fullrange Cabinet has two inputs on the backpanel. One speaker ter-
minal for the + positive connection to the amplifier and one speaker terminal for the
–negative connection to the amplifier. If you connect the speaker wires to the
speaker terminals the amplifier has to be switched off.
Beside the speaker terminals you have a toggle switch at the backpanel of the
Monitor switch, which can be switched in two positions. One position is for the linea-
rization of the hornmouth of the tweeter and to increase the damping for the voice
coil of the tweeter. Please notice, that this is not a simple attenuator, but it is also
decreases the level of the tweeter by around 2dB. In some very live environments,
or with amplifiers which intend to sound a bit more to the brilliant side, this toggle
switch can help to smoothen the system.
The Monitor Woofer Sub Bass Cabinet has three inputs on the backpanel. One
speaker terminal for the +positive connection to the amplifier and one speaker
terminal to the–negative connection to the amplifier. These speaker terminals
should be use, if you have no RCA output on your amplifier to drive the internal 300
Watts amplifier and active crossover of the Monitor Sub Bass system. The toggle
switch on the backpanel has to be switched in direction to the speaker terminals, if
you want to use these inputs with your amplifier. Switch the toggle switch in the po-
sition to the speaker terminals and then connect the speaker wires of the amplifier
to the speaker terminals of the Sub Bass cabinet. After that you have to connect
the Bass Sub speaker terminals to the terminals of the Monitor Fullrange Cabinet. It
is very important to connect the positive terminal of the Sub Bass Cabinet to the
positive terminal of the Monitor Fullrange cabinet, as well as negative terminal to
negative terminal. You should use a high quality speaker cable for this.
If your amplifier system has an additional preamp out output, you should this to
connect the Sub Bas Cabinet to your amplifier. You should use the RCA input sock-
et on the backpanel of the cabinet for this type of connection. The toggle switch
has to be moved towards the RCA input, to make it work.
Please notice, that you only can use only one of these connection methods and
the toggle switch has to be switched to the position of the connection method you
intend to use.

6
To match the Monitor Sub Bass to your room acoustics, there are two knobs at the
backpanel, which you can turn either clockwise or anti clockwise.
Knob V = Volume is to adjust the bass in level. If you turn it clockwise you will in-
crease the bass level and anticlockwise you will decrease the bass level. The level
of the bass should match your room acoustics. If the level is too high it will make
your room rocking, because it cannot handle the low frequency energy of the
Monitor Sub Bass. The Monitor Sub Bass System can go as low as 20Hz. This is much
more than most speakers available on the market and only possible because of the
unique active equalization and the 300 Watt built in amplifier. If you set up the Bass
System, please start at the 12 o`clock position of the knob and then turn it clockwise
or anti clockwise depending on your listening experience. Keep your time and listen
to a lot of music first.
In our experience the 1 o`clock position is matching most of the listening rooms.
Knob F = Frequency is to set up the best crossover point of Monitor Sub System and
Monitor Fullrange System in your listening room. This is a much more delicate thing
because you also can add some more lower midrange to your speaker system. This
is very much depending on your room acoustics.
If you turn the knob clockwise in full you extend the frequency response of Sub Bass
System up to lower midrange level which is too much for most environments. If you
turn the knob to the minimum position, it will not support the Monitor Fullrange sys-
tem in terms of bass volume enough. The sound will be a little on the thin side, even
in smaller rooms.
The ideal position of the F knob to start with, is the 11 to 1 o`clock position. This posi-
tion is the ideal support for the Monitor Fullrange system and matches the room
acoustics of most environments nicely.
The speaker should be connected to the amplifier with a high quality cable. We
recommend our Einstein The Thrill or The Thunder speaker cable, but you can use
any high quality speaker cable with banana plugs or high quality speaker spades.
Before switching on the system we recommend to double check that all plugs are
perfectly tight in the sockets.
6. Running In Time
Like any other component The Monitor / The Monitor Woofer will improve during the
first period of use. There is no need for a special running in record or CD. While listen-
ing to music you will realize how your loudspeaker will increase in sound quality.
If you prefer to ‘burn in’ the loudspeakers music with a high dynamic range will
serve best. Run in time for The Monitor / The Monitor Woofer is around 100 hours and
it has got a pre run in by us for 8 hours.
7. Additional recommendations
To achieve a flat frequency response and thus a coherent sound image, turn the
speakers 30 degrees inward. The angle is correct when you see the inner side of the
loudspeakers from your central listening position only as a narrow line, so the front is
aligned almost exactly to you. For a heavier subdued room with smaller reflections,
you can also angle the speakers slightly more so that you cannot see either the
inside or the outside of the loudspeakers, so the front is aligned exactly to you.
If your room is sensitive in terms of acoustic, it makes sense to play around with the
speaker position a little bit for the best results.

7
This can also cause the speakers to be not angled at all. Then you have a slight roll
off in the upper frequency range, which is advantageous in rooms with greater
reverberation. The character and dynamics of the loudspeaker are not affected by
this.
Due to the inert sealed cabinet, it is possible to place the speaker right in front of a
wall or even close to a corner. Please notice that you will achieve a more intense
bass and lower midrange level by doing this.
Referring the positioning of the speaker, please have in mind, that it is best to keep
the distance of the speaker to the side walls similar, as well as the distance to the
back walls of the room. If your room is a big one and the walls are 2 meters away
from the speakers, the distance parameters shouldn`t cause any trouble any more.
The listening distance to both speakers left and right should be the same also. This is
important to get the time alignment to your ears right.
If you set up a speaker in a corner, you will increase the bass level up to 100 Hz by
roughly 6dB, which means double the listening level at this frequency band. If the
other speaker does not have the same position in a corner, the level at the bass will
be less and will limit the balance in sound obviously. But with the Monitor Sub Bass
system you can overcome this problem, because you are able to reduce or to in-
crease the bass level with the V knob.
A big advantage of our speaker design is also, that our speaker system does not
add uncontrolled cabinet resonances to the room which will damage the pure
sound a lot. It`s just physics that a big speaker cabinet transfers uncontrolled energy
into the room, which has nothing to do with the recording itself.
That is the reason, why we kept the cabinets as small as possible and as rigid as
possible. Together with The Reference Stand there is no cabinet coloration limiting
the sound of the recording. Just pure.
8. Basic Technical Information
The Monitor Sub Bass system is a two way monitor system with a Sub Bass extension
in the low frequency range.
The Monitor Fullrange Speaker is a pure two way monitor speaker. To keep phase
and time alignment as perfect as possible, the crossover is a true 6dB design. The
cabinet is made of 40mm massive birch plywood with dimensions as small as possi-
ble to get rid of any resonance and oscillating problem of the cabinet itself, which
will damage the pure sound of the recording because of added cabinet colora-
tion. The design of the Monitor Fullrange speaker allows listening distances down to
1.5 Meter without any compromises. The Monitor Fullrange Speaker is a sealed cab-
inet design.
The Sub Bass extension is done by an 8 inch, aluminium drive unit with a huge
double magnet system. The drive unit is powered by a 300 Watt built in amplifier
with an custom designed active crossover. Due to this design, the Sub goes as low
as 20 Hz.
The cabinet is made of 40mm massive birch plywood with dimensions as small as
possible to get rid of any resonance and oscillating problem of the cabinet itself,
which will damage the pure sound of the recording. Because of the low frequency
energy this sub bass system can achieve, the back panel of the cabinet is made of
12mm massive aluminium and inside heavy duty bracelets to get rid of any colora-
tion of the cabinet itself.
