1 Description
This evaluation kit (Order No. KI-1210003) is designed to provide you the most quick and easy approach to the HALIOS® tech-
nology based on Elmos IC E909.06.
A typical HALIOS® application consists of optics, electronics and software. While the majority of electronics and software are
covered by the IC and its firmware, the evaluation kit supports you with examples for optic design and a ready-to-use devel-
opment environment. Power supply of the hardware is established via USB or with an alternative external power supply (not
included with the evaluation kit). Use this kit for an easy analysis of gestures and the positioning of the sensors.
1x baseboard containing IC E909.06
2x gesture head
1x dual head adapter, sender PCB
1x dual head adapter, receiver PCB
1x USB cable
1x USB stick, containing the HACo development tool, software, documentation etc.

3 Sensor heads
Two sensor heads will be delivered with the evaluation kit. Dependent on your evaluation purpose you can choose whether to
use only one gesture head or to use the dual head adapter and connect both heads to the baseboard.
In the beginning of 2013, a new gesture head was launched to realize simple and easy proximity- and swipe-gestures. The new
HALIOS® gesture head consists of two sender LEDs (incl. a current driver for each sender LED), one photodiode as a receiver and
one compensator LED.
This HALIOS® gesture sensor is intended for close to mid-range motion detection like proximity and swipe gestures. For human
machine interfaces it is in a class of its own at realizing relative x- and z-position of an object within the sensor area. By using
two gesture heads you get additional information about the relative y-position.
Proximity range (awareness) up to approximately 40 cm in z-axis, swipe gestures up to approximately 25 cm in x- or y-axis
(proximity and swipe range depends on the tilt angle and on the reflectivity of the object, e.g. human skin).
The default software supports connection of one or two gesture heads to the baseboard. In case of using two gesture heads
you have to use the dual head adapters as it is shown in Figure 4.
You are free to connect any other kind of a HALIOS® sensor head. If you do so you may have to alter the hardware and software
settings.

The software on the baseboard is already pre-configured. The setup supports one and two connected gesture heads.
Included with the evaluation board is the Microsoft Windows™ based graphical HALIOS® Configuration tool (HACo). You will
find it on the enclosed USB stick. Just connect the optical head(s) to the baseboard, establish USB communication between PC
and the baseboard and run the HACo.exe file.

This PC-based development tool gives you full control over every aspect of the connected HALIOS® IC E909.06. By using the
HACo tool you can configure every relevant parameter of the IC, whether it is based on hardware (analog frontend) or it is based
on its firmware (software), e.g. sequence and timing of the measurements. In addition, the data generated by the sensor can
be transmitted to HACo and then be visualized on your PC. In the beginning, HACo’s intuitive user configuration interface along
with its data visualization will make your first HALIOS® experiences effortless. The tool will support your development in a fast
and reliable way. In order to support the development of embedded software for the internal Elmos 16bit-micro-processor (EL
16), the USB stick contains some software project files with complete code examples for the HALIOS® IC firmware as well as
additional functions such as filter, self-calibration etc. These code examples are called software application notes.
Please read also the document getting started with e90906.pdf which can be found on the USB stick delivered with the kit or
on our web site in the download section.
