operationinstructionsshouldbereadbeforeanyoperationofthecomponent(s)begin.Aftersuccessfulinstallationand
configurationoftheSubwoofer,besuretoretainthismanualinasafeplaceforfuturereference.
Thefollowingsituatio
AllwarningsontheSubwooferandinthisOperationManualshouldbefollowed.Safetyisakey
componenttoalonglasting,troublefreeinstallation.Thevastmajorityofthesafetyprecautionsare
simplycommonsense.Ifyoudon'tfeelcomfortableperformingtheinstallationofaudio/video
entertainmentequipment,itisadvisedthatyouseektheservicesofaqualifiedinstallationprofessional.
NEVERuseUltraSubwoofersnearwater,suchasabathtub,washbowl,kitchensink,laundrytub,inawet
basement,ornearaswimmingpool,etc.Thereisariskofelectricshocktoyourbodyandpermanentdamagetothe
equipment.Electricshockmayresultinpermanentbodilyinjuryordeath.
ThisSubwoofershouldbeinstalledinalocationwhichprovidesadequateventilation.TheSubwoofershouldbesituated
awayfromheatsourcessuchasradiatorsorotherheatproducingdevices.
UltraSubwoofersshouldbeconnectedonlytoapowersupplyasdescribedinthisOperationManualorshownonthelabel
locatedonthebackofthesubwoofer.Thepowercordshouldberoutedsothatitavoidshighfoottrafficareas;and,
placementofthepowercordshouldavoidlocationswhereheavyitemsmaybeplaceduponoragainstit.Specialattention
shouldbegivenwherethepowercordwillplugintothewalloutlet,conveniencereceptacles,andthepointwherethepower
cordattachestothesubwoofer.
Thepowercordofthesubwoofershouldbeunpluggedfromtheoutletwhenunusedforalongperiodoftime.Neverspray
liquidsdirectlyontothecomponent.CareshouldbetakensothatsmallobjectsdonotfallintotheinsideoftheSubwoofer.

• Thepower‐supplycordortheplughasbeendamaged;or

groundingandinparticular,specifiesthatthecablegroundshallbeconnectedtothegroundingsystemofthebuildingas
closetothepointofcableentryaspractical.
AntennaGroundingOutsidetheHouse
Ifanoutsideantennaisconnectedtothereceiver,besuretheantennasystemisgroundedsoastoprovidesomeprotection
againstvoltagesurgesandbuilt‐upstaticcharges.Article810oftheNationalElectricalCode,ANSI/NFPA70,provides
informationwithregardtopropergroundingofthelead‐inwiretoanantenna‐dischargeunit,connectiontogrounding
electrodes,andrequirementsforthegroundingelectrode.
Alwaysobserveproperantennaorsatellitedishgroundingtechniques.Whenlightningstrikesthereisalwaysthepossibility
thatyourantennaordish(mountedhighontheroof)canbecomeaconduitforlightningandelectricallydamageany
equipmenttowhichit’sconnected.Additionally,propergroundingofferssafetytothepeopleusingtheaudio/videosystem
intheeventofanelectricalproblem.

Theouterboxmayshowwearandtear,butthisisnocauseforalarm.Theouterbox’spurposeistoprotecttheinnerbox.If
theinnerboxlooksheavilydamagedorpenetrated,andyouareconcernedaboutdamagetotheSubwoofer,pleasecall

Insidethelaminatedinnerbox,theSubwooferissecurelyseatedbetweentotworeinforcedpiecesofhigh‐densityimpact
foam.Atfirstglance,thecardboardbackingonthefoammaygivetheappearanceofathirdbox,butitiseasilyliftedto
revealtheSubwoofer,whichiswrappedinstaticfreeplastic.Itisrecommendedthattheplasticsheetingberemovedafter
thesubwooferisliftedoutofthebox.

InputforanXLR/Balancedconnection.ConnectstoyourpreamplifierorprocessorsubwooferoutputwithanXLR/Balanced
cable.
2.RCA/UnbalancedInputs
InputforanRCA/Unbalancedconnections.Connectstoyourpreamplifierorprocessorsubwooferoutputwithan

3.LowPassFilter
TheLowPassFilterdirectsthefrequenciesthatarepassedthroughthesubwoofer.Forexample,acrossoverpointsetto
50Hzonlyallowsfrequenciesof50Hzorlowertopassthroughthesubwoofer.Acrossoverpointof100Hzonlyallows
frequenciesbelow100Hz,andsoon.ThehighertheLowPassFilterfrequencyisset,thewidertherangeoflowfrequencies
thatareallowedtopassthroughthesubwoofer.ThereisnorightorwrongadjustmentfortheLowPassFilter.Yourmain
speakers,room,orpersonaltastemaydictatealowerorhigherLowPasssetting.
Ifyouareusingapreamplifier/processorthatemploysitsownlowpasscontrols,disengagetheLowPassFilteronthe
subwooferbysettingtheswitchto‘BYPASS’,allowingthepreamplifier/processortocontroltheLowPasscrossoverpoint.
NOTE:UsingmorethanoneLowPassFilteratatimeisnotrecommendedasitcancauseinaccuratephaseresponseor
unpredictablephaseshiftinginthepassband.
4.CrossoverFrequencySelector
SelectsthecrossoverfrequencyfortheLowPassFilter,from50Hzto150Hz.Whenusingapreamplifier/processorwithaLow
PassFilter,itisrecommendedthatyousetthesubwooferLowPassFilterto‘BYPASS’andusethefilteronthe
preamplifier/processor.Beginwithacrossoverfrequencyof80Hz,whichisastandardsetting,andmakeadjustmentsas
neededtosuityoursystem,room,responseorpersonaltaste.
WhenusingtheLowPassFilterontheUltraSub,adjusttheCrossoverFrequencycontroluntilthesubwooferbecomeswell
integratedwithyourspeakers.(moreoncrossoveradjustmentsonpage18)
Note:Thiscontrolislogarithmic,meaningasitisturnedtowardhigherfrequencies,thefrequencieschangebyratio,nota
fixedmeasurementorspacingonthedial.
5.VolumeControl
Controlsthesubwoofermainvolume.Ifusingapreamplifier/processortocontrolthemainsubwoofervolume,startwith
settingthesubwoofervolumecontrolatthehalfwaypositionandthenadjustthelevelupordownfromthere.

6.PhaseAdjustmentControl
Adjuststhephaseofthesubwooferfrom0to180degrees,relativetothemainspeakers.Asubwooferinproperphasewith
therestofthespeakersinasystemiswellintegratedwiththeoverallsoundstage,addingbassfrequencieswhichseamlessly
blendwiththeotherspeakers.Anoutofphasesubwooferwilldrawattentiontoitselfbyseemingtobedisconnectedfrom
theoverallsoundstage,sometimessoundingdetachedordisconnectedtotheothersystemspeakers.Itwillalsoaffectthe
soundofthesysteminthemidbass;sometimesthisappearstobeasenseofphysicaldistancefromtheotherspeakers.
Toadjustthephaseandproperlyintegratethesubwooferintoyoursystem,startwiththePhaseAdjustmentControlon0,
andgraduallyturntowardsahighernumber,takingtimetostepbackandlisten,untiltheimagingandintegrationseems
correcttoyou.Thispartoftheprocessmaytaketime,justrelaxandenjoytheprocess.
7.StandbyPowerSwitch
Bringsthesubwoofertofullpowerfromstandbymode.YoumayusetheStandbyPowerSwitchintwodifferentways:
1.Whilethesubwooferisinstandbymode,fliptheswitchto‘ON’tobringthesubwoofertofullpower,and‘OFF”toreturnit
tostandbymode.
2.Withthesubwooferinstandbymode,settheswitchto‘AUTO’.Whenthesubwoofersensesanaudiosignalfromthe
preamplifier/processor,itwillautomaticallygotofullpower(modethismaytaketwoorthreeseconds).Aftertenminutes
withnoaudiosignal,thesubwooferwillreturntostandbymode.ThetenminutedelayallowsforyoutochangeCD’s,pause
amovie,etc.,withoutshuttingthesubwooferoffandonrepeatedly.
8.IECPowerCableConnection
9.MainPowerSwitch
TheMainPowerSwitchislocatedtowardsthebottomoftherear
panelofthesubwoofer,towardstheleft.Thisswitchhastwo
positions,markedas‘O’(off)and‘1’(On).Turningtheswitchto‘1’
putsthesubwooferinstandbymode.Tobringthesubwoofertofull
power,turntheStandbyPowerSwitchto‘ON’.
Note:‘Standby’Powerconsumesabout2wattsorlessofpower,
abouthalfofwhataconventionalnightlightconsumes.YourUltra
SubwooferwasdesignedtostayinStandbymodeindefinitelyif
needed.Ifyouareawayfromhomeforanextendedperiodoftime,
youmayconsidersettingthemainpowerswitchto‘0’(Offposition).

ConnectionConsiderations
UltraSeriesSubwoofersfeaturebothbalancedandunbalancedconnections(page10,points1&2).XLRconnectionsare
balancedlines,andaredesignedtorejectexternalnoise(frompowercables,EMIandRFIemissions,etc.)toagreaterdegree
thanstandardRCAconnections.Ifyourpreamplifier/processorisequippedwithabalancedsubwooferoutput,itis
recommendedthatyouuseanXLR/Balancedinterconnecttoassurethehighestdegreeofnoiseimmunity.
Beforesettingupyournewsystem,pleaseconsiderthefollowing:
• AlwaysmakesurethesubwooferisturnedoffbeforemakingorchangingANYconnections.
• Wheneverpossible,routethepowercordsawayfromthesignalcablesorspeakerwirestopreventhumor
interference.
• Alwaysusewellconstructed,100%shielded,oxygenfreecoppercables.

PlacementTips
Whereyouplaceyoursubwooferisasimportantasanyofthevolumeorlowpasssettings.Thisisbecausetheroomitself,
othergear,andevenfurniturecangreatlychangethewaysoundwavespropagateinyourlisteningarea.Certainareasin
yourroommaymagnifytheresonantlowfrequencies,andcertainareasmayminimizethem.Walls,cabinets,shelves,and
otherfurnituremayproduceunwanted‘booming’frequencies.Proximityisusuallytheissueinthiscase.Simplymovingthe
subwooferafewinchesorafewfeetmaycausedramaticchange.
Experimentationisusuallythekeytofindingtherightplacetosetupyoursubwoofer.Don’tbeinarushtogetyoursetup
doneasquicklyaspossible.Takeyourtime,andtryseverallocationsuntilyoufindonethatworksbestforyourroomand
system.AdjustingtheLowPassandPhasingofthesubwooferwillfinetunethesoundonceyouhavedecidedonalocation.
Ifyouhavealisteningareaorsystemsetupthatlimitsyouroptions,andthesubwooferisnotrespondingfavorablyinits
currentlocation,goingthroughtheLowPass/Phase(inthenextsection)adjustmentsarecrucialinachievingawell
integratedsound.
Thediagrambelowshowsaroomwithasevenchannelsystem,andnotesseveralcommonlocationsforsubwoofer
placement.Itisrecommendedthatyoutrythesefirst,butanotherlocationinyourroommayprovetobemoresuitable.

UsingLowPassFiltersandSettingtheCrossoverFrequency
Note:Ifyourpreamp/processorhasitsownLowPassFilter/Crossoversettings,itisrecommendedthatyouusethemto
controlthecrossoverfrequencyonyoursubwoofer.TurntheLowPassFilterswitchto‘BYPASS’(page10,point3).This
disengagesalllowpass/crossovercontrolsonthesubwoofer.Ifyourpreamplifier/processordoesnothaveLowPass
Filter/Crossovercontrols,usethecontrolsonthesubwoofer.
TousetheUltraSubwooferLowPassFilterandCrossoverControls,connectthesubwoofertoyourmulti‐channelorstereo
system(withallotherspeakersconnectedtotheirrespectiveamplifiersandinworkingorder).TurnthesubwooferVolume
control(page10,point5)onthe‘MIN’(minimum)setting,thenbringthesubwoofertofullpower,andobservethefollowing
steps:
1.TurntheLowPassFilterswitchto‘ON’
2.SettheCrossoverFrequencyto150Hz,thehighestpoint.
3.Withyourpreamplifier,processor,CDplayer,orothermediasource,selectandplayafamiliarpieceofmusic.
4.Keepingthesubwoofervolumedown,raisethevolumeoftherestofthesystemspeakerstoalevelthatisrepresentative
ofyourusuallisteninghabits.
5.UsingthesubwooferVolumecontrol,raisethelevelofthesubwooferuntilitsoundscorrecttoyou(‘correct’inthiscase
referstoyourpersonalpreference).
6.BegintoslowlyadjusttheCrossovercontroltolowernumbers,takingtimetostepbackandlisten.
Rememberthatthecrossoverfrequencydefineswhichfrequenciesarepassedthroughthesubwoofer,andwhicharenot.A
crossoversetto50Hzonlyallowsfrequenciesof50Hzorlowertopassthroughthesubwoofer.Thehigherthesetting,the
morefrequenciesareallowedtopassthrough.ThehighestsettingontheUltraSubwooferis150Hz,whichallowsall
frequenciesbeneath150Hztopassthrough.
Asyoulisten,youarelookingforthemomentwhenthesubwooferseamlesslyintegrateswiththerestofyourspeaker
system.Thesubwoofershouldnotdrawattentiontoitself,butratherseemlikeanextensionofthespeakers,perfectly
blended.Smallersystemspeakerswhichproducearelativelysmallamountofbassfrequenciesmaybenefitfromahigher
crossoverfrequency,whilesystemspeakersthatproducemorebassfrequenciesmaypromptyoutochoosealower
crossoversetting.
YouwillprobablymakeseveraladjustmentstoboththeCrossoverandVolumecontrolsbeforethesubwoofersounds
properlyintegratedwithyoursystem.Besuretotakeafewbreakstorestyourears,andtryseveralpiecesoffamiliarmusic.
Remember,therearenorules.Youmayfavormoreorlessbassthansomeoneelse,andwhatsoundscorrecttoyoumaynot
soundcorrecttoothers.
AdjustingthePhasecontrolmayrequirethatyougothroughthisprocessagainaftertheadjustment.Justbepatientand
you’llgetitright!
SettingthePhaseControl
Beginbysettingthecontrolto0,andstepbacktolisten.Doesthesubwooferdrawattentiontoitslocation,ratherthan
seemlikeanextensionoftheoverallsoundstage?Doesitseemsomewhatdisconnectedfromtherestofthespeakers?Ifso,

UsingMultipleSubwoofersinaMulti‐ChannelSystem
ThecompactsizeofUltraSubwoofersmakethemidealforbeingusedinsystemsthatemploymultiplesubwoofers.Thisis
becomingmorecommoninhometheaterenvironments.Actionfilmsandconcerts,especially,cangreatlybenefitfroma
substantialsubwoofersetupthateasilyandcomfortablyfillstheroomduringdemandinglowendsequences.Themost
commonmultiplesubwoofersetupistheuseoftwosubwoofers,aleftsideandarightside,butmanycombinationsare
possible.Ifyouwouldliketouseamultiplesubwoofersetup,checkyouraudio‐videoprocessororreceiverandmakesureit
hasmultiplesubwooferoutputs.
Werecommendthatyouinitiallytryaleftside/rightsidesetup.Althoughlowfrequencysoundwavesarenon‐directionalin
nature,aleftside/rightsidesetupcangiveyouatrulycohesive,powerful,smooth,andbalancedsoundstage.
Setthecrossover,phaseadjustment,andvolumecontrolsidentically,thenmakeadjustmentsuntilthesubwoofersproperly
integratetoyoursystem.Ifyouareplacingthesecondsubwoofersomewhereelseintheroom(otherthanamirror
placementinrelationtothefirstsubwoofer),orusingmorethantwosubwoofers,experimentingwithvolume,crossoverand
phasecontrolsbecomescrucialinachievingabalanced,well‐integratedsoundforyoursystem.
Again,practicepatience!Itmaytakealittletime,butyou’llendupwithanamazingsoundinghometheaterandmusic
listeningenvironment.
NOTE:Whenusingamultiplesubwoofersetupthatrequiresdifferentvolume,crossoverandphasesettingsbetweenthe
subs,remembertousetheadjustmentcontrolsonthesubwoofersthemselves,insteadofsettingthemtobypassandusing
thecontrolsonyourprocessororpreamplifier.

UltraSubwoofersareexpertlydesignedandbuilttoprovideyearsoftrouble‐freeperformance.Mostproblemsthatoccur
canusuallybesolvedbycheckingyoursetupormakingsurethattheaudioandvideocomponentsconnectedtotheamplifier
areonandfullyoperational.
Thefollowinginformationwillhelpyoudealwithothercommonsetupproblemsyoumayexperienceduringnormaluseof

NoSound(fromoneormorespeakersconnectedtotheamplifier)
• Theconnectionbetweenthesubwooferandpreamplifier/processormayhavecomeundone.Turnoffyoursystem
andcheckthecables.
• Damagedaudiocable.
• ApreamplifierMuteswitchmaybeon,anexternalprocessorlooporatapemonitorloopisengaged.
• Checkmainpowerswitchtomakesurethatitisinonposition(1).

Turn‐onandTurn‐offThumps
• PlugtheUltraSubwooferintoadifferent115VACoutletthantheamplifierpoweringyoursystemspeakerssothere
isnopowerturnonconflicts.
• Installaline‐conditioningdevice.
“Hum”Noises
• Thisproblemismorethanlikelycausedbya“groundloop”inyoursystem,ratherthanafaultinthesubwoofer.
Followthesestepstoisolatethemaincauseofthehum;theremayevenbemorethanone.Remembertoturnoff
allcomponentsinyoursystembeforedisconnectingorconnectinganycablesduringtroubleshooting.
• Trytohaveallofyourequipmentonthesameelectricaloutletorcircuit.Groupallthelowpowercomponents
(preamp,CDplayer,DVDetc.)onasingleoutletorpowerstrip.Thisisprovidedthattheoverallcurrentdrawfrom
yourequipmentdoesnotexceedtheratingoftheoutletorbreaker.
• Disconnectallcables,whichcomefromoutsidetheroom,andcheckifthehumgoesaway.Thisincludessuch
connectionsascableTV,satelliteTV,orrooftopantennas.Makesurethattheyaredisconnectedwheretheyfirst
entertheroom,sotheyaremakingnoconnectiontothepreamplifierortheTV,oranyothercomponent.Ifthehum
iscausedbythecableTVline,thenyouwillneeda“groundloopisolator.”Thisisaninexpensivedeviceplacedin
linewiththecoaxialcablefeed.ContactyourCableCompanyorEmotivaforassistance.
• DisconnectallconnectionsfromthepreamplifiertoyourTV,VCRorDVD.
• Asatest,disconnectanyothercomponent,whichhasagroundedpowercord.
NOTE:Neverremovethegroundpinfromanypowercords(ifpresent).Thisisverydangerous.
Ifthehumpersists,disconnectallthesourcecomponentsoneatatimefromthebackofthepreamplifier,untilyouidentify
theproblem.

Groundloopisolatorsareavailableforaudiolinesandvideodevices.Ifyouneedassistance,contactEmotiva.Althoughthisis
notalwaysanidealsolution,thegroundingdifferencesbetweencertainhomeentertainmentcomponentssometimesrequire
groundloopisolators.Thisistheexceptionratherthantherule.
OtherProbableCausesofNoise
• SpeakernoisemayalsobecausedbyinterferenceornoiseonyourACline.Makesuretherearenolargeappliances
sharingtheline,orhalogenlampsorlight‐dimmingdevices.
• TryconnectingyoursystemtoanotherACsocketonaseparateline.
• Ifthehumisheardfromwithintheamplifier,andnotthroughthespeakers,thismayalsobecausedbyinterference
ontheACorDClines.Thepowertransformersmayturnthisinterferenceintoanaudiblenoise.Internalhumcanbe
madeworsebyashelforcabinetresonating,sotrymovingthesubwoofertoanotherlocation.
• TrymovingyourcomponentsfurtherawayfromtheTV,especiallyifyounoticethescreenhaschangedcolorinthe
areaclosesttothecomponent.
• Ifyouhaveveryhighefficiencyspeakers,thesemaytendtorevealnoises,whichotherspeakersdonot.
