Empatica has currently four products.
•Empatica E3: wrist bracelet that measures physiological data
•Empatica Connect: cloud platform for getting and reviewing the data.
•Empatica Realtime: Iphone application that visualize data in realtime.
•Empatica Manager: Desktop software that facilitates the transfer of data between the device and the cloud
When using the E3 you can collect data in two ways by combining the products above.
•With a mobile phone: you will use the realtime application to collect the data on the phone that then transfer
the data to the cloud.
•Without a mobile phone: you will use the Empatica manager to transfer the data recorded in the E3’s internal
memory to the cloud.
In both the two situations the data are transferred to the cloud platform called Connect that will be the final tool for
visualizing or getting the recorded data.

Getting the software

Before you can start using the E3 please download and install all the software
First of all create an account at the Empatica Connect platform www.empatica.com/connect
You will have a user name and password that is useful to log in into all our products.
Click in the Create Account tab to enter your details

You will receive a confirmation mail at the address provided during registration. Please click in the link
contained in the mail to activate your account

Download the Empatica Realtime application from the App store if your have an iphone 4s or above
and you want to record your data with it. First search for Empatica Realtime and then install the app

Getting started

Wear the E3 on the non dominant hand having the case on the top of the wrist and the closing the strap from
side of your thumb.
Be sure that the E3 is charged. If it is not charged, it will not turn on.
Be sure that the E3 is in an OFF state distinguished by the fact that the status led is off and Sensors leds are off
(the ones below the case).
See Getting around to learn how to charge the E3. Wear the E3 tight to your wrist till you feel confortable with it.

Push the button to switch the E3 on and bring it in the standby state. In the standby state the E3 is ready to
acquire data.
There are three types of actions you can do with the button: short, normal and long.
The short pressure is a quick click on the button. The long pressure lasts more than 4 seconds, while the normal
pressure is in between the two.
In order to learn the different types of pressures try the following steps.
•From the OFF state a short pressure will not result in any output from the E3.
•From the OFF state a normal pressure switches the E3 on, please press the button till you see the status led that switches on. As
soon as you see the light you can release the button and the normal pressure is completed.
•You can try to turn the E3 off with the same normal pressure. When you start to turn it off, as soon as you click the button the led
turns on and then off after a second. As soon as the led is off you can release the button. The E3 now turned off.
•Finally you can try a long pressure by continuously pressing the button for many seconds that allows you to reset the E3. The
Reset happened when a white solid light. You can then release the button. After few seconds the E3 will starts from the stand by
state.

Be sure that the E3 is flashing green, which means that E3 is in standby.
In the stand by state the status led produces different color combinations. The most relevant are:
•Flashing Green and Red do not allows you to save the data in the internal memory but allows you to use the smartphone. If you
want to use the memory see Recording data without a smartphone section or Getting synchronized with your computer.
•Green and yellow means that the E3 is getting discharged. If you see this combination and any other color please see the Getting
around section.

Getting connected to a smartphone

Open the Empatica Realtime Application, log in with your user name and password then click on start new
session. After few seconds a list of discovered devices appears. Then click in on the device to which you
want to connect
The E3 must be in the stand by state to be discoverable by your iphone.
The E3 goes automatically in recording mode after 40 seconds of stand by as described in Recording data without a smartphone. If
the E3 is not listed please start again from the Wear the E3

Have a look at the recorded data and then you can now lock your phone. The data will be streamed and
recorded in your phone.
Please DO NOT go RUNNING with the E3, it is not water resistant.
Remember to not leave the phone too far (10 mt) from your, otherwise the connection will be lost. But you can do all your usual
activities
Use the button on the left corner to go back to the initial screen

When you are done with the recording, go back to the initial screen, press the X to stop the acquisition
and then press OK. After disconnection the recorded data are transfered to the cloud. Be sure you have an
active internet connection.

Recording the data without a smartphone

After 30 seconds of standby state the E3 goes automatically in recording mode. You see a red solid
light, which means that the recording is started. Data are stored in the internal memory of the E3
and can be synchronized later to your computer.
The Red light goes off after few second but the E3 is still recording. You know this by looking at the
Sensors led below the case that are on.
If the recording does not start, the E3 might be flashing green and red so please see Getting synchronized with your computer.
If this does not solve the issue please reset the E3

Use the E3 during your normal activity and remember, the E3 is NOT water proof, so please do not
use it for RUNNING.

When your are done with the recording do a normal pressure on the button to stop the recording. The
E3 will go automatically in a off state.

Getting syncronized with your computer

Run the Empatica Manager application in your computer
In a Mac Os X computer it is located in your Application folder while in a Windows computer use
the desktop link created by the installer
If the application is already running, please close it

Log in with your user name and password

Plug the USB cable to your E3, be sure that the E3 is in a OFF state. The status led is off and the
sensors led in the bottom part of the case are off. This is important for the correct functioning
of the Empatica Manager.
Connect the E3 to the computer.

As soon as you connect the E3 to the computer, the E3 switches on producing different colors.
The computer will detect it and it will start to synchronize the data stored in the E3 to your
computer and finally to our cloud platform called Connect.
It may happen that the Manager does not recognize the E3 properly. If this happens you can switch the E3 off with a
normal pressure keeping it plugged. Close the Empatica Manager application. Open the Empatica Manager again and
switch on the E3 manually with a normal pressure.
Synchronize the E3 with you computer is also useful to stop the E3 from flashing green and red.

When the synchronization process is completed you can
Close the Manager application
Unplug the E3 from the USB port, be sure that after the unplug the E3 is in a OFF state
otherwise another recording session may start.
You can also decide to leave the E3 plugged in order to allow the charging process to complete.

Review your data

Go to the connect platform at www.empatica.com/connect and login

Click Session list button to display all your data. The firs in the list is your latest recording

Getting around

Charge the E3 by plugging it into the USB port of your computer. Be sure that the Empatica Manager is
not running otherwise the synchronization process will start.
You can also use an external usb charger that can provide at least 200 mAh of current.
