Introducing
simFUSION
In this Chapter
This chapter contains a brief description of the capabilities of the Evans &
Sutherland Computer Corporation simFUSION visual system. Topics include:
•About simFUSION
•Technology
•Acceleration of OpenGL
•Key simulation features
•simFUSION hardware
1.1 About simFUSION
The E&S simFUSION visual system is a rack-mountable PC designed for
simulation developers who require the highest image quality at the highest
performance levels. simFUSION provides the features needed for realistic,
effective training experiences.
1.1.1 Technology
The E&S simFUSION visual system is based on the E&S OPENsim graphics
accelerator subsystem. Several choices of accelerators provide a wide variety
of options and performance. The graphics subsystem is based on an ATI

Introducing simFUSION

chipset that provides the highest performance and most cost-effective
acceleration of both 2D and 3D graphics.
1.1.2 Acceleration of OpenGL
The E&S simFUSION visual system is compliant with OpenGL. Because it is
based on an industry-standard API, most 3D applications can be accelerated
with simFUSION. The amount of acceleration may vary, depending upon the
specific application configuration.
1.1.3 Key Features
The E&S simFUSION excels as a platform for simulation applications, both
in single system and in multiple system deployments. Each simFUSION
platform combines the power of two to four industry leading ATI Radeon
processors to provide unparalleled image quality and performance. Key
features include:
•Single-pass, subpixel accurate antialiasing that provides the clear, realistic
images required in simulation training environments—up to 24 samples
per pixel or four external samples per pixel (with independent texture look
ups).
•Up to four times the pixel fill rate of a consumer graphics board.
•ChanLock™ for multiple display environments. ChanLock synchronizes
the video images of multiple projectors and coordinates the image updates
in multiple systems, including during overload conditions. Video
synchronization includes the ability to synchronize to external masters.
Channel synchronization includes the ability to control swaps from an
external master. These mechanisms function in hardware, making it easy
to distribute applications across multiple systems.
•Multichannel swap rate control to preserve constant updates even when
scene complexity dramatically decreases.
•simFUSION Control – configuration and control tool for clusters of
simFUSIONs.
•Order-independent screen-door transparency to provide accurate images
without having to sort the database.
•Fade level-of-detail (FLOD) support for smooth transitions of object
representations at different levels of detail.
•Custom video mode support allowing users to define video modes for use
with a wide range of projectors.
•High-precision monochrome output with up to 16 bits precision for sensor
simulation.

•Stereo support by a variety of mechanisms for both passive and active
stereo systems, including simultaneous computation of left and right
images and automatic stereo computation for non-stereo applications.
Further, the simFUSION video combining capability provides even higher
image quality or performance by blending images from multiple
simFUSIONs. Mechanisms available include (some options priced):
•Temporal interleaving – supporting higher refresh rates by alternating
images from up to 16 systems.
•Spatial tiling – improving fill rate by subdividing the image into smaller
pieces.
•Multiple samples – antialiasing improvement by adding more samples per
pixel.
1.2 simFUSION Hardware
The E&S simFUSION visual system consists of a standard 4U rack-
mountable enclosure configured with a high-performance power supply
selected to meet the specific voltage and current demands of the configured
system. The motherboard and processors are chosen to maintain optimum
performance characteristics. Installed in the system is an E&S OPENsim 3D
graphics accelerator subsystem. Standard configurations also include an IDE
hard drive, CD-ROM, and floppy drive.

WARNING: The simFUSION chassis is specially designed to provide the power
and cooling needed by the OPENsim graphics accelerator. The
accelerator cannot be installed in another PC chassis.
1.2.1 Motherboard Identification
To keep the simFUSION PC at the leading edge of technology, E&S supports
several motherboards. Active motherboards are described in Appendix B.
1.2.2 Keyboard, Mouse, and Displays
The simFUSION supports most keyboards, mice, and displays.

1.3 simFUSION Software
1.3.1 Software Driver Distribution
A software driver for simFUSION is distributed with the system on CD-
ROM. Driver updates are available on the E&S ftp site. Contact E&S Support
for information and assistance. The information contained in this user’s guide
covers a typical driver installation. Refer to the specific driver installation
notes for any changes. If you have problems, contact E&S support.

Installing simFUSION
In This Chapter
This chapter contains information about the following:
•Before installing simFUSION
•Installing the system
•Upgrading the driver software
2.1 Before Installing simFUSION
Installing simFUSION is usually simple and fast. The system is completely
set up at the factory and normally does not need changing. However, there are
a few things you should know before installing the system.
2.1.1 Power Requirements
The simFUSION contains an auto-sensing power supply that operates on the
voltage, power and current requirements listed in Appendix C. Actual power
used can vary depending on the OPENsim card and other components
installed in your system. Refer to Appendix C for more information.
2.1.2 Environmental Requirements
The chassis must be mounted so that there is sufficient space for air intake,
which is located at the air filter and exhaust, and is then vented out the rear of
the chassis. If mounted in an enclosed rack, the rack cabinet must be
ventilated and capable of removing at least 1200 BTUs per chassis on 6000
based systems and 1400 BTUs per chassis on 6500-based systems. The
chassis air inlet temperature, located at the air filter, cannot exceed 35 ˚C.
Airflow is from the front of the chassis to the back of the chassis.

Additional fans have been installed within the simFUSION chassis to help
facilitate air flow. There are two on the back panel of the PC, card cage fans
and a drive bay fan (for SE7505VB2 motherboard). All of these fans must be
operational at all times to make sure that the CPU and OPENsim card
temperatures are kept within the recommended range. The drive bay fan
cannot be un-installed at any time from your system.
2.2 Installing the System
2.2.1 Installation Tasks
The following table lists the tasks you must complete to install the simFUSION
system.
Table 1. Overview of Installation Tasks
Task Detailed
Information
Unpack the system, cables, and documentation. Save the packing materials
in case you need to return the system to the factory. See Figure 2
Install the chassis in a 19-inch rack if required.
Connect monitor, keyboard, mouse, and Ethernet cables. Then connect the
power cable. See Figure 2
2.2.2 Unpack the System
Before opening the shipping container, inspect it for damage. The system was
carefully packed at the factory and, although the container was designed to
protect the system from damage under most conditions, external damage to
the container may indicate possible damage to the system.
NOTE: Shipping damage is NOT covered under the E&S warranty. Report
any damage incurred during shipment to the carrier. Please report
the damage to E&S as well.
Carefully open the shipping container and remove the system, cables,
documentation, and the software CD-ROM.
Important! Save the box and packing materials should further shipment
become necessary.
2.2.3 Make Sure You Have Everything
The simFUSION package should contain the items listed as standard
simFUSION listed in Table 2. The optional items may be included if required
