SAFETY WARNINGS
This mat must be installed per HeatTrak® instructions. Follow these important warnings to avoid
the risk of re or shock.
• Haveaqualiedelectricianinstallaproperlygroundedoutlet,ratedforthevoltageandcurrent
required,andacceptableforoutdooruse(protectedfromsnowandrain),immediatelyadjacentto
thelocationwheretheheaterwillbeused.
• Donotwalkonthematbeforeitiscompletelyinstalled.
• Inspecttheentirematandsupplycordfordefectsordamagebeforeusing.
NOTE: Thepowersupplycordisnotreplaceable.
• Donotmodifyanypartofthemat.Inparticular,donotattempttocut,slice,ortrimthemat.
• Routethesupplycordandlocatetheheatertobeprotectedfromdamage.
• Donotuseextensioncords.
• Donotplugthematintoanimproperlywiredorratedoutlet.
• Donotpowerthematswhilerolleduporstackedoneachother.

• Unplugmatatreceptacleoutletwhennotinuseorbeforemoving.
• Periodicallyexaminethematforanysignsofdamageorexcessivewear.Iffound,unplugandremove
thematfromservice.Immediatelyandcallcustomerserviceforassistance.
UNPACKING THE BOX & PREPARING THE AREA
Afterreviewingthesafetywarningsabove,taketheHeatTrakMattothespotwhereitisgoingtobeused
andunpackitthere.Savethepackagingmaterialsforstoringthemato-season.Savetheseinstructions
incaseyouneedtolookatthemagain.
It is best to clear all pre-existing ice and snow from the area you will be using
the HeatTrak Mat. But if this is too dicult, you can use the HeatTrak Mat to
melt it. Simply roll out the mat over the snow and/or ice and plug it in.
Dependingonhowmuchsnoworpackediceyoualreadyhave,itcouldtakeuptoawholedaytomeltit.
(Undernormalconditions(i.e.whenthematisalreadydownandsetup),thematwillmeltthesnowas
itfalls,leavingyouwithaninstantlyclearedwalkway).Afterclearingthepre-existingsnowandice,make
surethebottomsurfaceisfreeofanysharpobjectssuchasrocks,glassorloosenails,whichcouldcause
damagetothebottomofthemat.

INSTALLING THE HEATTRAK WALKWAY MAT
• Donotinstallthematonaroughdirtorgravelsurface.TheHeatTrakMatshouldbeinstalledonat
orinclinedsurfacesonly.Alignthematsothepowercordisclosetotheelectricaloutlet.
• Ifinstallingmorethanonemat,DONOTOVERLAPMORETHAN1INCHOFANYPARTOFTHEMATS.
(Overlappingmorethan1inchmaycauseoverheatingandcouldcausethematstomelt).
• Thetopandbottomsurfacesofthematareexactlythesameandwillheatthesame.Sofeelfreeto
ipthemataroundorupsidedowninordertogetthepowercordclosetotheelectricaloutlet.
• Rollthematoutandadjustittotexactlyasyouwantit.
• TheHeatTrakWalkwaymatshouldnotbeusedonstairs.Forsnowandiceremovalonstairs,usethe
HeatTrakStairMats.Formoreinformationonthestairmats,visitourwebsiteatwww.HeatTrak.com.
• Useonlythe3/8”innerdiametergrommetsforattachment.Donotdriveanyformofnails,screws,
fasteners,orotherobjectsthroughtherubbersurfaceofthemat.
• Thematcanbeinstalledatairtemperaturesdownto–20°F.
NOTE:Atcoldtemperatures,thematislessexibleandmaynotlayperfectlyat.
Laythematoutasataspossibleandturniton.Asitheatsup,thematwillatten.
Forbestperformance,makesuretoturnthematsonatleast30minutesbefore
thesnowstartstofall.Thiswaythematswillbeniceandwarmandreadytostart
meltingassoonastherstakesfall.However,ifyouturnthematsonafterthe
snowhasfallen,itcouldtakeuptoafewhoursforthemattomeltthroughallthe
accumulatedsnow.

DONOTCONNECTTHEPOWERUNITTOTHEOUTLETUNTILALLTHEMATSAREPROPERLYCONNECTED
TOEACHOTHERANDNOTSTACKEDONTOPOFEACHOTHER.
First,laytheHeatTrakStairMatsonconsecutivesteps,orientingthematssothecableconnectorsareon
thesideclosesttotheoutlet.Justlikethewalkwaymats,thetopandbottomsurfacesofthestairmats
areexactlythesameandwillheatthesame.So,feelfreetoipthematsaroundorupsidedowninorder
togetthecableconnectorsonthesideyouwantthem.
Next,connectmultiplematstogetherbyconnectingthemaleconnectorofmat“A”tothefemale
connectorofmat“B”.Todothis,alignthemaleandfemaleconnectorsandrmlypushthecables
togethersotheyareushwitheachother.Ifthemaleandfemaleendsfeelliketheydonotconnect
together,ipthefemaleendofthecordoverandtheplugsshouldgotogether.
EveryseriesofstairmatsrequiresaPowerUnittobringelectricitytothemats(PartNo.HR-PAfor120V
orHR-PBfor240V).Removethelighttester(transparentcork)fromtheendofthePowerUnitandinsert
intothefemaleconnectorofyourlaststairmattosealtheconnectorfrommoisture.Afterallthemats
areconnectedproperly,andthelighttesterissecurelyinsertedintothelaststairmat,connectthePower
Unittotherstmatusingthesamemethodusedforconnectingtheconnectorcables.Besureallcables
areasfartothesideofthestepsaspossiblesotheydonotpresentatrippinghazard.
PlugthePowerUnitintoaproperlygroundedoutlet.You’llseethematsareonwhenboththePower
Unitandthelighttesterareilluminated.IfthePowerUnitdoesnotilluminate,refertothesectionbelow
abouttestingthePowerUnit.Ifthelighttesterdoesnotilluminate,checkalltheconnectionsofthestair
matstomakesuretheconnectorsareushwitheachother.
SECURING THE MAT
Thematwasdesignedwithaseriesof3/8”innerdiametergrommetsalongeachedgetomakesecuring
thematbothsimpleandeective.Securingthematminimizestrippingandkeepsitfrommoving.To
securethematyoumustusethesegrommets.Useascrewthatissuitableforthegrommetopeningand
surfaceunderthemat(i.e.cementscrewsforcement,woodscrewsforwood,etc.)

INSTALLING ELECTRICAL OUTLETS
Makesuretheelectricaloutletsyouareusingareproperlygroundedandsuitablefortheloadtheywillbe
handling.Fortheelectricalratingsofeachofourmats,pleaseseethechartattheendofthisbooklet.
TESTING THE POWER UNIT
Forgeneralsafety,theHeatTrakMatissuppliedwithaPowerUnit.ThePowerUnitturnsothepowerif
anyoftheelectriccurrentbeginsleakingtoground.ItisimportanttotestthePowerUniteachtimethe
matisinstalledandbeforeuse.Hereisallyouneedtodo:
1. LocatethetestandresetbuttonsonthePowerUnit.
2. Plugthepowercordintotheoutlet.
3. AlternatelypresstheRESETandTESTbuttons.
4. EachtimeyoupresstheRESETbutton,thepowerlightshouldturnon.
Ifthelightdoesnotcomeon,makesurethereisvoltageattheoutlet.
5. EachtimeyoupresstheTESTbutton,thepowerlightshouldturno.
6. LeavethePowerUnitwiththelightturnedon.IfthePowerUnitdoes
notoperateasdescribedabove,donotusethemat.

DRIVING ON THE MATS
TheHeatTrakMatsareverydurableandwillhandlenormalvehiculartracinstandardwintery
environments.However,itisimportanttomakesurethegroundsurfacesunderthematsareclearof
anysharpobjectsthatcouldpuncturethemat.Ifyouhavequestionsaboutthedurabilityofourmatsin
yourspecicvehicularsituation(i.e.,manylargetrucksonaregularbasis),pleasecallHeatTraktechnical
supportteamat(888)586-4904.
OPERATION & STORAGE
PowertheHeatTrakMatwheneverthereisathreatofsnoworice.Itisagoodideatounplugitwhen
thereisnosnoworice.Beforestoringthemat,cleanitwithmildsoapandwater,andplaceitinthe
originalpackaging.RollthematbackupandplacethepowercordandPowerUnitinsidetherolledmat
toprotectthemfromdamage.Store mat indoors after winter season.Itisimportanttostorethe
matsimmediatelyafterthewinterends.FailingtodosomayexposethematstoexcessivesummerUV
sunlight,harmingthematsovertime.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why don’t the mats feel warm when I touch them? Whenyouturnonthemats,theymaynotfeel
warmtothetouch,butthat’sok.Thisisespeciallytruewhentheairtemperatureoutsideisverycold.
Thisisbecausethetemperatureofyourhandisgreaterthanthetemperatureofthemat.Butifyouare
concerned,checktoseethatthelightonthemat’splugisilluminated.Ifitis,thesematsareonandthey’ll
meltsnow.Ifaftertherstsnowfallitappearsthematsarenotmeltingsnow,callourtroubleshooting
teamat(888)586-4904.
Are the power units waterproof? Thepowerunitonthematiscertiedas“rainproof,”butitisnot
submersible.Therefore,pleasebecarefulnottolaythemat’spowerunitinanareathatwillcollectalot
ofwater,suchasasmallditch.Whilethematsthemselvesareverywaterproof,thepowerunit,however,
cannotbeexposedtoexcessiveamountsofwater.Itisbesttomakesurethepowerunithangsfrom
theoutletinaverticalmanneratleast18”fromtheground.However,ifthepowerunitwillbelayingin
ahorizontalmanneronasidewalkorground,itisbesttowrapthepowerunitinaplasticbagtokeep
asmuchwaterawayaspossible.Donotmaketheplasticbagairtight,becauseitisimportanttomake
sureanywaterthatmaygetinsidethebaghasawaytoexit.Thepurposeofthebagistokeepexcessive
amountsofwaterawayfromthepowerunit.

Can I leave the mats on all the time? Yes,youcanrunthesematsallwinterlongwithoutdamaging
themat,butyourelectricitybillwillbehigherthannormal.Itisbesttoonlyusethematswhenyouare
expectingsnow.Alternatively,youcanuseanyofourthermostataccessoriestoautomatetheoperation
ofthemats.Thiswillsaveyoutimeandmoneyandensurethatthematsturnonevenifnobodyisthere

Can I place the mat on any surface? Somesurfaces(e.g.,stampedconcrete)havespecialcoatingsor
sealersthatmaygetharmedifexposedtoheat.Ifyouhaveasurfacethatyouthinkmayhaveaspecial
coatingonit,youshouldputathinheatblockerunderthemats.Thisblockercanbeintheformof
plywood,outdoorcarpetorturf,thininsulation,etc.Puttingaheatblockerunderneaththematswill
forcetheheatupwardsawayfromthesidewalk,preservingthespecialcoatingonthesidewalk.
