Introduction to HPE XP7 Performance Advisor
Overview
HPE XP7 Performance Advisor software (PA) collects, monitors, and displays the performance of XP and
XP7 disk arrays. The software enables you to identify performance bottlenecks by collecting historical
data and presenting this for immediate investigation using charts and reports. It also enables you to
compare the performance data of individual components such as Ports, RAID, Groups, LDEVs, and
Processors.
PA is a web-based application which includes the following resources:
Resource Benefits
Centralized management station A centralized approach to monitoring and managing arrays
enables to reduce the cost of operations and effort.
Distributed host agents Enables sharing of interface with third-party tools for easy
management of your storage and data center.
Browser-based interface Aims for easy user adoption.
Command-line presentation client Easy to manage and use for advance-level users.
Data communication between the above-mentioned resources is achieved through Internet-based
protocols that eliminate geographical limitations to software resource distribution.
HPE XP7 PA software: Major features
• Monitor the health status of managed arrays consolidated at SAN level.
• Collect and compare data about physical components of disk arrays, and flag the critical array
components.
• Monitor large array configuration (PA can monitor up to 64k or 65536 LDEVs).
• Create custom groups to monitor specific LDEVs, and view a graphical representation of its
performance.
• Dispatch email notifications, SNMP traps, and run scripts for batch files when metrics cross defined
thresholds.
• Generate reports and event logs on the overall performance of an XP or an XP7 disk array or on
individual components in these arrays.
• Review a log of events that are triggered within PA.
HPE XP7 PA software: Key benefits
• Easy visualization of configuration and performance data via charts and graphs.
• Quick access to associated components for effective and thorough troubleshooting for performance
bottlenecks.
• Configure and manage the extensive historical database.
• Displays details on pool savings in terms of compression, dedupe, FMD Gen2 compression.

• Coexist with other products such as HPE XP7 Command View AE and HPE XP7 TSM by sharing the
PA management station, and save on floor space.
• PA also provides XPWatch, a troubleshooting tool that helps you to troubleshoot performance issues
of XP and XP7 Storage systems.
• Launch PA from other products.
P9000 disk arrays are also included as part of XP disk arrays

About launching PA from HPE XP7 Tiered Storage Manager
HPE XP7 Tiered Storage Manager is used to perform migration, where the data stored on predefined set
of volumes is moved to another set of volumes with the same characteristics. Thus, archiving data and
freeing up the current volume for use by other applications.
There can be situations where data residing on LDEVs in the XP disk arrays is not frequently accessed.
Such data can be moved to a lower performing tier. The LDEVs that are experiencing high I/Os should be
moved to a higher performing tier, or to a lower utilized RAID Group within the same tier to balance
performance. To identify the set of LDEVs for data migration, use PA where you can view the usage data
for the LDEVs and the related RAID Groups in the form of charts. PA displays charts for the selected
LDEVs, for the specified metric category, metric, and duration. You can analyze the charts to know the
Getting started with PA 13

LDEVs and the related RAID Groups that have less frequently used data. The charts displayed show the
read/write and the I/Os for the selected LDEVs and their associated RAID Groups. Further, based on the
data projected, you can decide on the data that needs to be migrated to lesser used volumes. Use HPE
XP7 Tiered Storage Manager to move data from the source volumes to other target volumes that satisfy
the performance (Service Level Objectives) for that data. This is especially useful in cases where the
performance required for the volumes changes with the passage of time.
IMPORTANT:
Launch PA from HPE XP7 Tiered Storage Manager to view the usage data of the LDEVs and the
related RAID Groups only for the XP, P9500, and XP7 disk arrays.
You can launch PA from HPE XP7 Tiered Storage Manager v7.6.1-00 onwards. Once launched, the
charts for the LDEVs are displayed in the PA GUI for all the XP disk arrays that PA supports. For more
information, see the manuals set provided for the HPE XP7 Tiered Storage Manager Software the HPE
Manuals page. You can launch PA for the Migration Group volumes and the Storage Tier volumes, and
also in the Create Migration Task operation to facilitate selection of source and target volumes.
IMPORTANT:
• The locations of the PA management station and other parameters are defined in the HPE XP7
Tiered Storage Manager hppa.properties file. For more information, see the HPE XP7
Tiered Storage Manager Software Administrator Guide.
• If you have already logged in to PA using the specified management station address, the PA
login screen is not displayed. Instead, the PA screen is displayed, where you can select the
metric and the duration to view the graphs.
View performance graphs for LDEVs
Procedure
1. To access PA from HPE XP7 Tiered Storage Manager and view the charts for the LDEVs that belong
to a storage domain: On HPE XP7 Command View Advanced Edition Suite, click the Mobility tab to
view the list of the logical groups created. The logical groups contain the list of volumes which are
grouped logically to migrate.
2. From the list of logical groups, select the group for which you want view the performance graphs of the
associated LDEVs.
The logical groups and the volumes in the groups are displayed.
3. Click Logical Groups.
4. Click the logical group for which you want to analyze performance.
All the LDEVs that belong to the selected migration group are displayed under the Volumes tab.
5. Under the Volume tab, select the LDEV records for which you want to view their usage and I/O details.
6. Click Analyze Performance.
The PA login page is displayed.
7. Enter your user name, password, and click Login.
By default, the LDEVs component screen displays, and you can plot the performance graphs for the
selected LDEVs, monitor the associated components .

About the graphical user interface
The graphical user interface for PA comprises of various levels of screens. This multilevel approach
enables you to easily identify the performance bottlenecks and start drilling into the resource instances
that might need your prompt attention. The Overview dashboard shows the consolidated performance
data at overall storage level for arrays being managed by PA. From the Overview dashboard, you can
navigate to the other levels of dashboards. Using the dashboard levels of views, you can further drill
down to the respective component screens and associated screens, and identify and troubleshoot
performances issues.
The PA features are broadly grouped under the main menu bar. At any point of time, you can navigate
from one screen to any other screen using the main menu.
Main menu and Banner
The main menu and banner area include the main menu for selecting screens, a search box, sidebars for
activities and help, and a session menu.
Main menu
The main menu is the primary method for navigating to resources and performing actions. The main
menu is categorized as follows:
•Dashboards–Provides a quick view of the key performance status and general health of the arrays
that PA monitors.
•Components–Provides a detailed view of the configuration and performance details of all the physical
components on an array.
•Features– Provides a detailed view of the configuration and performance details of all the features
displayed in the figure below.
•Configurations–Enables to issue configuration and performance collection, set threshold values for
components and features, configure alarms, manage license and common PA settings.
•Reports–Enables you to manage reports and PA database.

•General–Enables you to manage Event Log, purge and archive data, alarm history, view custom
groups and templates.
•Security–Enables to manage PA users.

VSM/Resource
Group
Displays all the discovered resources in the array and provides
a framework that manages the virtual IDs. Resource groups
helps in preventing the risk of data leakage or data destruction
by another storage administrator in another resource group.
PA monitors the resources such as LDEVs, RGs, ports and host
groups that are assigned to a resource group in an XP7 array.
