There is a serious risk of personal injury if you do
not follow all instructions laid down in this guide.
This equipment has been designed to be used by
an able bodied, competent adult who has read and
understood these instructions. Anyone with either a
temporary or permanent disability, should seek expert
advice before using it.
Keep children, animals and bystanders away from
the work area.
Never use this equipment if you are ill,
feeling tired, or under the influence of
alcohol or drugs.
Safety Goggles MUST be worn by everyone in
the work area.
Some materials being cut or ground by this
process may contain substances which, when
inhaled, can be harmful to health. A suitable mask
must be worn when using this equipment.
This equipment generates potentially harmful
noise levels. To comply with health and safety at
work regulations, ear defenders must be worn by
everyone in the vicinity.
Wear practical, protective clothing and
footwear. Avoid loose garments and
jewellery that could catch in moving parts.
Check the equipment before use. If it shows signs of
damage or excessive wear, return it.
Stop the machine if you experience discomfort or
numbness during use.
Always switch OFF and isolate the grinder from its
air supply before making adjustments to it. Check
that it is switched OFF and that you have removed all
spanners and keys before reconnecting it.
Having switched OFF, always wait for the wheel to
come to rest before putting the grinder down.
Ensure the side handle and guard are correctly
adjusted and secure before starting work.
Ensure the work area is well lit and ventilated, if in
doubt, ask about dust extraction and ventilation
equipment at your local HSS Hire Shop.
Do not work near flammable gases or liquids, petrol
or paint thinner fumes for example. Keep combustible
materials at a safe distance – at least 5m.
Take special care when cutting into anything
containing pipework or electrical cables. If in doubt,
hire a metal detector from your local HSS Hire Shop, to
determine the exact position of such hazards.
GENERAL SAFETY Never allow compressed air to travel down an air
hose which is not connected to the air grinder, this
may cause personal injury.
Most HSS air grinders require a 125 cfm
compressor to run them. The air connections used
are the claw type quick action couplings.
On some models a short air hose adaptor is fitted,
to reduce the operator strain of trying to work with the
heavy conventional hose.
If the grinder fails, or if its hose or coupling gets
damaged, return it. Never try to repair it yourself.
Keep the air hose out of harm’s way, keep it clear of
moving parts. Never run them through water, over sharp
edges or where they could trip someone.
Never carry or pull the equipment by its air hose.
Ensure the air supply is turned OFF before
connecting or disconnecting it from the air hose.
With the compressor warmed up, and the air
supply valve CLOSED, connect the air hose by
pushing it on to the valve and turning clockwise.
Anchor the delivery end of the air hose so that it is
not aimed at any person or property then, taking great
care, slightly open the air supply valve to clear the
hose of any debris. Then fully close the valve
Fit the right wheel for the job. HSS Hire Shops offer
cut-off, grinding and diamond wheels.
Never use a grinding wheel for cut-off work or vice
versa. If in doubt, contact your local HSS Hire Shop.
GETTING STARTED
AIR SAFETY
Regularly check the wheel’s condition and replace
if worn or damaged, using only wheels supplied by
HSS Hire Shops.
Ensure replacement wheels are distortion free and
undamaged and that the paper washers are not
wrinkled or torn. NEVER FIT SUBSTANDARD OR
OLD, USED WHEELS.
To fit a wheel, isolate the grinder from its air supply,
then immobilise the back flange – grip the shaft with
the spanner provided or operate any spindle-lock button.
Remove the front lock flange with the ‘pin’ spanner
and check the condition of both flanges. If either is
damaged, return the grinder to your local HSS Hire Shop.
Now, locate the wheel on the back flange plate,
making sure that both the diameter and the arbor (centre
Hole) are the correct size for the machine.
Finally, secure the wheel in place by screwing on
the front lock flange Either with the boss on the
outside for cutting wheels or the boss on the inside for
grinding wheels.
Take care not to over-tighten then check that the
new wheel rotates freely and does not foul the
guard, before use.
You can now connect the grinder to the air
supply hose, open the air supply valve and start
the compressor.
