SET UP TRANSDUCERS AND SELECT SONAR SOURCES (OPTIONAL)

Transducers w th ID or XID (A rmar transducers) are conﬁgured automat cally n the system, and the

control head w ll automat cally select the best sonar source based on transducer capab l t es. Sonar

source nformat on s ava lable n your control head operat ons manual.

NOTE: To set up a transducer manually (Initial Setup), change sonar sources, or troubleshoot

sonar sources, download the Transducer Setup Guide from our Web site at humm nb rd.com.

Open the S nar S urce Menu

Use the follow ng nstruct ons to open the Sonar Source Menu, where you can select sonar sources,

set the max depth and depth oﬀset, and select other sonar sett ngs for your connected transducers.

1. Press the HOME key.

2. Select Sett ngs.

3. Select Sonar to access No se F lter and nd v dual Beam Select.

4. Select Sonar Source to set up transducers and choose sonar sources.

SET AIRMAR CHIRP SETTINGS (OPTIONAL)

Use the follow ng nstruct ons to set up transm t mode, sweep, frequency range, and other operat on

preferences. The menus n th s sect on are determ ned by the type of CHIRP transducer nstalled.

1. Press the HOME key.

2. Select Sett ngs.

3. Select Sonar.

4. Scroll to the CHIRP SONAR sect on to adjust the follow ng menu sett ngs:

Transm t Mode

Select Spectrum Sweep to transm t the transducer beams n a

sweep ng range. To set the sweep range see Low Medium High

Frequency Spectrum.

Select Single Frequency to transm t the transducer beams at a

frequency set to your preference. To change the frequency, see

Low Medium High Frequency.

Beam Select If the selected sonar source ncludes more than one beam, you can

select wh ch beams w ll be d splayed n the sonar v ew.

Low/Med um/H gh

Frequency

The control head w ll automat cally select a frequency for each

transducer beam. Use the Frequency Menus to adjust each frequency

h gher or lower. Transm t Mode must be set to S ngle Frequency to

access these menus.

Low/Med um/H gh

Frequency Spectrum

For each sweep range, set the start frequency and the end frequency.

Transm t Mode must be set to Spectrum Sweep to access these

menus.

No se F lter Use No se F lter to l m t nterference on the sonar v ew from sources

such as your boat eng ne, turbulence, or other sonar dev ces.

OVERVIEW

The Ethernet Black Box Sonar allows you to connect select transducers and accessor es to your

SOLIX®, ONIX®, or ION® control head. Connect up to two Black Box Sonars on your Ethernet network.

PREPARATION

Follow ng are nstruct ons for the nstallat on of th s accessory. Before you start the nstallat on, we

encourage you to read these nstruct ons carefully n order to get the full beneﬁt from your

Humm nb rd® accessory.

a Ph ll ps screwdr ver, a level, a penc l, tape or heat-shr nk nsulat on, and a

Humm nb rd Ethernet cable (separate purchase requ red). You may also need an adapter cable

(separate purchase requ red) f you plan to connect a prev ously nstalled transducer.

INSTALLATION

Perform the procedures n the follow ng sect ons to nstall the Black Box Sonar on your boat.

1|Determine the M unting L cati n

The Black Box Sonar s des gned to mount on any ﬂat, level surface of your boat. Pr or to nstallat on,

you must ﬁrst determ ne where to mount the Black Box Sonar.

1. Use a level to locate a su table, ﬂat area to mount the Black Box Sonar.

2. Place the Black Box Sonar n the chosen mount ng locat on and test the length of the cables

(transducer, temp/speed, and power) to conﬁrm that each cable w ll reach the Black Box Sonar.

3. Test the length of the Ethernet cable (separate purchase requ red) from the Black Box Sonar

to conﬁrm t w ll reach the control head.

CAUTION! Do NOT mount the cables where the connectors could be submerged in water or

flooded. If cables are installed in a splash-prone area, it may be helpful to apply dielectric

grease to the inside of the connectors to prevent corrosion. Dielectric grease can be

purchased separately from a general hardware or automotive store.

NOTE: Items labeled as High Frequency Pair refer to the higher of two given frequencies.

Items labeled as Low Frequency Pair refer to the lower of two given frequencies. For

example, a Low & Medium Frequency CHIRP transducer would use the medium frequencies

as the High Frequency Pair and the low frequencies as the Low Frequency Pair.

4. Unscrew the Broadband port cover on the Black Box Sonar.

5. Connect the adapter cable connector to the port. Hand-t ghten the screw nut to secure the

cable connect on.

7|C nnect the P wer Cable

The Black Box Sonar power cable ( ncluded) can be connected to the electr cal system of the boat at

two locat ons: a fuse panel (usually located near the console) or d rectly to the battery.

CAUTION! Make sure that the power cable is disconnected from the Black Box Sonar at the

beginning of this procedure.

NOTE: Humminbird is not responsible for over-voltage or over-current failures. The Black

Box Sonar must have adequate protection through the proper selection and installation of

a 5 amp fuse (separate purchase required).

1. Refer to the table, Determine Your Voltage Requirement, to conﬁrm the voltage requ rement

for your F sh ng System.

2a. If a fuse term nal s ava lable, use cr mp-on type electr cal connectors (not ncluded) that match

the term nal on the fuse panel. Depend ng on your control head model, attach the black w re to

ground (-) and the red w re to pos t ve (+) 12 VDC or 24 VDC power (see Determine Your Voltage

Requirement). Install a 5 amp fuse (not ncluded) for the protect on of the accessory.

2b. If you need to w re the power cable d rectly to a battery, obta n and nstall an nl ne fuse holder

and a 5 amp fuse (not ncluded) for the protect on of the accessory. Attach the black w re to

ground (-) and the red w re to pos t ve (+). Humm nb rd s not respons ble for over-voltage or

over-current fa lures.

3. Connect the power cable connector to the port labeled POWER on the Black Box Sonar. The ports

are keyed to prevent reversed nstallat on, so be careful not to force the connector nto the

connector port. Hand-t ghten the screw nut to secure the cable connect on.

4. Install cable t es (separate purchase requ red) to prevent the cables from mov ng and pull ng,

wh ch could stress and potent ally damage the cable connectors.

Proceed to the Set up Transducers and Select Sonar Sources sect on to set up your transducer source

on the control head.

5|C nnect Transducer Cables

NOTE: Some Airmar and previously installed Humminbird transducers may require an

adapter cable to connect to the Black Box Sonar. For more information, visit our Web site

at humm nb rd.com or Airmar’s Web site at a rmartechnology.com.

1. See the table below to determ ne the port connect on(s) for your transducer type(s) and Black

Box Sonar model.

*The Airmar CHIRP transducer requires an adapter cable to connect to the Black Box Sonar. See the

instructions in the next section to connect the adapter cable and CHIRP transducer cable to the Black

Box Sonar.

**MEGA Imaging™ transducers can be connected to the Black Box Sonar, but MEGA Imaging frequencies

are not supported.

2. Unscrew the port cover on the Black Box Sonar.

3. Connect the transducer cable connector to the port.

4. Hand-t ghten the screw nut to secure the cable connect on.

6|C nnect the CHIRP Transducer Adapter Cable (SM 3000 nly)

If you plan to connect an A rmar CHIRP transducer, use the follow ng nstruct ons to connect t to the

CHIRP adapter cable ( ncluded w th the SM 3000). Also, see the nstallat on gu de ncluded w th the

A rmar CHIRP transducer.

WARNING! Turn off power for all related equipment before you start the installation.

1. Turn oﬀ the power for the Humm nb rd control head and each connected accessory.

2. See the nstallat on gu de ncluded w th the A rmar CHIRP transducer to conﬁrm the w r ng and

that the bare w re colors match those shown n the follow ng table.

WARNING! Your CHIRP transducer may have different wiring. It is important to refer to the

guide included with your transducer to confirm the wiring and cable connections.

3. Connect the adapter cable w res to the CHIRP transducer cable w res as shown n the follow ng

table. Tape or apply heat-shr nk nsulat on to each connect on to prevent short ng the w r ng.

NOTE: To protect the wire connections, use a unction or break-out box (separate purchase

required).

2|Install the Black B x S nar

Once you have determ ned the mount ng locat on, perform the follow ng procedures to nstall the

Black Box Sonar on your boat.

1. Set the Black Box Sonar n place on the mount ng surface. Mark the four mount ng screw

locat ons w th a penc l.

2. Set the Black Box Sonar as de, and dr ll the four mount ng holes us ng a 1/8" dr ll b t.

NOTE: On fiberglass hulls, it is best to use progressively larger drill bits to reduce the

chance of chipping or flaking the outer coating.

NOTE: If the mounting surface is thin or made of a lightweight material, you may need to add

reinforcing material below the mounting surface in order to support the Black Box Sonar.

3. Insert the rubber feet ( ncluded), w th the adhes ve s de fac ng down, nto the four c rcular

recesses on the bottom of the Black Box Sonar. See the llustrat on Inserting the Rubber Feet.

4. Place the Black Box Sonar on the mount ng surface and al gn the screw holes w th the dr lled

mount ng holes. Insert the four #10 screws ( ncluded) through the screw holes and nto the

dr lled mount ng holes, and hand-t ghten us ng a Ph ll ps screwdr ver. Hand-tighten only!

NOTE: Apply marine-grade silicone caulk or sealant (separate purchase required) to both

screws and drilled holes as needed to protect your boat from water damage.

3|C nnect the Ethernet Cable

The Ethernet cable can be connected d rectly to the control head or to an add t onal Black Box Sonar

or Ethernet Sw tch on your network. Refer to your Ethernet Network ng manual and the control head

nstallat on gu de for more nformat on.

1. Unscrew the Ethernet port cover on the Black Box Sonar. Connect the Ethernet cable connector

to the port. Hand-t ghten the screw nut to secure the cable connect on.

2. Control Head: Connect the Ethernet cable connector to the Ethernet port on the back of the

control head.

Black Box Sonar: Connect the Ethernet cable connector to the Ethernet port.

Ethernet Switch: Connect the Ethernet cable connector to an Ethernet port.

NOTE: See the Ethernet Switch installation guide for more details.

3. Hand-t ghten the screw nut to secure the cable connect on.

NOTE: Make sure the port covers are tightly fastened over any unused connector ports.

Connectors that are left exposed may corrode.

4|C nnect the Airmar® Temp/Speed Cable

If you have the A rmar Speed and Temperature Paddlewheel Accessory, see the nstruct ons below to

connect the cable to the Black Box Sonar. Also, see the nstallat on gu de ncluded w th the accessory.

1. Unscrew the Speed/Temp port cover on the Black Box Sonar.

2. Connect the Speed/Temp cable connector to the Speed/Temp port. Hand-t ghten the screw nut

to secure the cable connect on.
