Typically1 shoot-thru-hull installationsgive excellent highspeed opera-
tion and good to excellent depth capability. Thereis no possibility of
damage
fromfloatingobjects. Itcan'tbeknockedoffwhendocking or
loading
onthe
trailer.
However,
theshoot-thru-hull installationdoes haveitsdrawbacks. One,
somelossofsensitivity does occur, even onthebesthulls. Thisvaries
from hulltohull, evenfromdifferentinstallations onthe
samehull. This
iscaused
by differences in hull layup and construction. Two,theangle
ofthetransducercannotbeadjusted forthebestfisharches. Thiscan
bea
problem
onsomehullsthatsitwiththebowhighwhenatrestorat
slowtrollingspeeds. Follow theprocedure listed in theshoot-thru-hull
installation sectionin thismanual to determine ifyou can satisfactorily
shootthrough thehull.
TRANSOM MOUNT
-Assembly
1. Firstattach themounting bracket's halves together
as shown below.
Next, slidetherubberpad intothespace between thetwoslots. This
padkeeps
tensiononthebracket's latch,preventing itfromopening ata
lowspeed. Don'tclosethebracket atthistimel.

INSTALLATION

1. Thetransducer must beplaced inalocationthathasasmooth flow

random marks to appear on the sonar's display. You may need to
carefully
viewthewater's
pathatthetransom
whiletheboat ismoving

determine thebestlocationforthetransducer.
2. Makecertain thechosen location doesn'tinterfere with theboat's
trailer. Mountthetransducer at leastonefoot fromthe engine's lower
unit. This

the transducerbracket. Nowdrill twoholesin the centerof theslots.
Usethe#10stainless steelsheet metal screws supplied withthetrans-
ducertoloosely attach the
bracket tothetransom.

4.Theboatmustbemovingataslow
trollingspeed
toseefisharches. If
theboat ismotionless,fish stayinthe
cone,showing onthe
displayas
straight horizontal lines.
NOISE
Amajor
causeofsonar
problemsiselectricalnoise.Thisusuallyappears
on
thesonar's
display
as
random
patternsofdotsorlines.Insevere
cases,
it cancompletely
cover thescreen with black dots, orcause
the unit
operate erraticly, ornotatall.
To
eliminateorminimizetheeffectsof
electricalnoise,
firsttrytodetermine
thecause.Withtheboat atrest inthe
water, thefirst
thingyou
shoulddo
isturnallelectrical equipment ontheboatoff.Makecertaintheengineis
off, also. Turn your X-70A on, then turn off ASP (Advanced Signal
Processing).Thereshouldbea steadybottomsignalonthe
display.Now
turnoneach
piece
ofelectrical
equipmentontheboatandviewthe effect
onthe
sonar's
display.For example,turnonthe
bilgepumpandviewthe
sonar
displayfornoise. Ifnonoiseispresent,turnthe
pumpoff,
thenturn
onthe
VHFradioandtransmit.
Keepdoing
thisuntilallelectrical
equipment
hasbeenturnedon,theireffect
onthesonardisplaynoted, thenturnedoff.
Ifyou
findnoiseinterferencefrom
anelectricalinstrument, trollingmotor,
pump,
orradio,trytoisolatetheproblem.Youcan usually re-route the
sonarunit's
power
cableandtransducercable
away
fromthe
wiringthat
iscausing
theinterference.VHF
radioantennacables radiatenoise
when
transmitting,
sobecertainto
keep
thesonar'swires
awayfrom
it.You
may
needtoroutethesonarunit's

4.Checkthebattery voltage. Ifthevoltage drops,
the unit'stransmitter
power
also drops, reducingitsability
tofindthebottom
or
targets.
Bottom echodisappears
athighspeeds
orerratic digital
readingor
weakbottom
echowhileboat is
moving:
1.Thetransducer maybe in turbulentwater. Itmustbe mounted ina
smooth flowofwater
inorderforthe
sonartoworkatallboat
speeds.Air
bubblesinthe
water
disruptthesonarsignals, interferingwithitsability
to find thebottom or othertargets. The technical term for this is
Cavitation.
2.Electrical noisefrom
theboat'smotorcaninterferewiththe
sonar.This
causes
thesonartoautomaticallyincrease itsDiscrimination or noise
rejection feature. Thiscancausetheunittoeliminateweaker
signals
such
asfishorevenstructurefromthe
display.Tryusingresistorspark
plugs
or
routing
the
sonarunit's
powerandtransducercables awayfrom
otherelectricalwiring ontheboat.
NofisharcheswhentheFishIDfeature isoff:
1.Makecertain transducer is pointing straight down. Thisisthemost

5. Adjust
thetransducer andbracket sothatthe
frontofthetransducer
is slightlylowerthanthe back. See the section on fish arches inthis
manual for propertransducer angles. Tighten
all screws. (CAUTION;
Don't overtighten the bolt that holds the transducerto the bracket.
Overtightening theboltmay
result in adistortedbracket
whichwillallow
thetransducer
to"kick-up" athigh speed.) Snapthe
transducerbracket
togetherby pressing the outerbracket(the one with thetransducer
attached) against
theone screwedtothetransom.
NOTE:Somealuminumboats withstrakes or ribsontheoutside ofthe
hull create large amounts ofturbulence at high speed. These boats
typicallyhavelarge outboard motors
capable of propelling the boatat
speeds
over35 mph. Thetransducer should
be mounted asfarbelow
thehullaspossible pntheseboats. (See below) Thiswillplace

below theturbulent water,allowing

6. Routethetransducer cabletothesonarunit. Keep thetransducer
cableawayfromotherwiring on theboat, if possible. Electrical noise
fromenginewiringorbilgepumpscanbepicked
uponthetransducercable. Thiscanshow upas
unwanted interference onthesonardisplay.
7. Make atest run to determine the results. If
thereisinterference onthe displaywhen running
the boat at high speed, try lowering the
transducer'sbracket asshown atright.

SHOOT-THRU-HULL INSTALLATION
The transducerinstallation inside afiberglass hull must be in an area
that does not have air bubbles in the resin or separated fiberglass
layers. Thesonar
signal mustpass
throughsolid
fiberglass. Asuccess-
ful transducerinstallation canbemade onhullswithflotation materials
(such as plywood, balsa
wood, orfoam) between layers offiberglass if
thematerialis removed fromthe chosen area. For example, some
manufacturers use a layerof fiberglass, then a core of balsawood,
finishing withan outerlayeroffiberglass. Removing the inner
layerof
fiberglass
and thebalsa
woodcore exposestheouterlayer
offiberglass.
Thetransducercanthenbeepoxied directly
tothe outerlayeroffiber-
glass.Aftertheepoxycures,thehull iswatertight and structurallysound.
Remember, thesonarsignal mustpassthrough solid
fiberglass. Anyair
bubbles inthe
fiberglass
ortheepoxywill reduce or eliminatethesonar
signals.

fishsymbolswhentheFish I.D.
featureis
on,
tryincreasingthe
sensitivity.
TROUBLESHOOTING
Ifyourunitisnotworking,orifyouneed technical help, please
usethe
following
troubleshootingsectionbeforecontacting the
factory
customer
service
department. It
maysaveyouthetroubleofreturning your
unit.
Unitwon'tturnon:
1. Checkthe
power
cable's connectionattheunit.Alsocheckthe
wiring.
2.Makecertainthe
powercableiswired
properly.Theredwireconnects
tothepositive batteryterminal,blacktonegative orground.
3.Checkthefuse.
4.Measurethe
battery
voltageattheunit's power
connector. Itshouldbe
atleast11volts.Ifitisn't,the
wiringtotheunitisdefective, the
battery
terminals orwiring onthe
terminals arecorroded, orthe
battery
needs
charging.
Unitfreezes,locks
up,oroperateserratically:
1. Electrical noisefromtheboat's motor,trolling motor, oranaccessory
may be interfering with the sonar unit. Re-routing the power and
transducercables away fromotherelectricalwiringon theboatmay
