TheIlfordSportsmanisa soundlymadeandattractivelystyled35mm.
miniaturecamerawhichhasbeendesignedforquick,easyoperation.It
willtakefirst-classpicturesinbothcolourandblack-and-white.
BeforetakinganypictureswithyourIlfordSportsman,besuretoread
thisinstructionbookcarefullyandtopractiseusingthecamerawithout
film.Inthisway,youwillquicklylearntousetheSportsmanconfidently
sothatwhenyoueventuallyloaditwithfilmyouwillbequitecertainof
gettinggoodpicturesrightfromthestars.
EveryIlfordSportsmaniscarefullyconstructedandthoroughlytested,
andisguaranteedforoneyearfromthedateofpurchase.Sodon'tforget
tocompletetheguaranteeformandpostittoIlfordLimited,Ilford,
Essex,withoutdelay.
TheIlfordSportsman,whichtakes35mm.filminstandardcassettesand
givesa picturesizeof24x 36mm.,isfittedwitha rapidfilmwindlever(5).
Thecameraisequippedwitha three-elementanastigmatlens,havinga
focallengthof45mm.anda maximumapertureoff/3.5.Thelensiscoated
andgivesexcellentresultsonbothcolourfilmandblack-and-whitefilm.
Asinglemovementoftherapidfilmwindlever(5)performsthree
operations;thefilmisadvanced,theshutterissetandtheexposure
counterisadjustedtoshowthenumberofexposuresstillavailable.The
filmwindandtheshutterreleaseareinterlockedsothatdoubleexposures

arenotnormallypossibleandthefilmcannotbewoundonwithoutan
exposurehavingbeenmade.
Thelargeshutterreleasebutton(11)isconvenientlyplacedonthefront
ofthecamerasothatwhenitisgentlypressedthereisnoriskofcamera
shake.Thecentreofthisbuttonwillaccepta cablerelease.TheVario
shutterhasthreespeeds,1/25,1/50and1/200sec,andalsoa "B"setting
forbrieftimeexposures.Theshutterissynchronisedforflash(14)and
has"X"typesynchronisation.Thismeansthatelectronicflashunitsmay
beusedatallshutterspeedsandclassM flashbulbsmaybeusedata
shutterspeedof1/25sec.
Theviewfinder(10)isoftheopticaleye-leveltypeandgivesa brilliant
image.
OPENINGTHECAMERA
Thebackofthecameraisopenedbypressingonthebuttonofthelocking
catch(2).Thisisthesmallbuttonontheleft-handendofthecameraas
itisheldintheoperatingposition.
LOADINGTHECAMERA
Thecamerashouldalwaysbeloadedandunloadedintheshade,out of
directsunshine.Afterthecamerabackhasbeenopened,therewind
knob(3)shouldbepulledout tothemaximumextentandthecassetteof
filmplacedinthecamera.Thefreeendofthefilmwhichprojectsfrom
thecassetteshouldextendacrossthefilmtrackinthedirectionofthe
take-upspool.Pushbacktherewindknobgentlyandturnuntilitengages
withthecoreofthecassette.
Theleadingendofthefilmcanthenbetakenacrossthefilmtrackand
slippedintotheslitofthetake-upspool.Ifthetake-upspoolisnot in
thecorrectpositionandtheslitcannotbeseen,thespoolcanberotated

withthethumbonthelowermilled-edgeflange.Makesurethatthesmall
projectionatthelowerendoftheslitinthetake-upspoolisengaginga
perforationinthefilmandthatthelowersprocketisalsoengagingthe
perforations.
Thecamerabackcanthenbeclosed,theexposurecounter(4)settoA
andthefilm-speedreminderdisc(1)settoindicatethetypeoffilmin
thecamera.For20-exposurecassettes(e.g.,IlfordColourFilm)the
exposurecountershouldbesetto23beforetheleadingendofthefilmis
woundthroughthecamera.
Turntherewindknob(3)gentlyclockwiseuntilsomeslightresistanceis
felt,indicatingthatthefilmistaut;thenoperatetherapidwindlever(5)once,
releasingtheshutter(11)first,ifnecessary.Therewindknobshouldturn
anti-clockwisewhenthefilmwindisoperatedandthisindicatesthatfilm
ispassingthroughthecameraintheproperway.Therapidwinder
shouldthenbeoperatedtwicemore,releasingtheshutterbetweeneach
operation;thiswillbringthefirstframeofthefilmintopositionandbring
theexposurecounter(4)to36(orto20inthecaseofcolourfilm).The
exposurecountercountsbackwards andindicatesthenumberofexposures
remaininginthecassette.
EXPOSUREANDFOCUSINGCONTROLS
Thelensisfocusedbyrotatingthefocusingring(8)untilthedistanceof
theprincipalsubject,measuredinfeet,liesagainstthewhitediamond-
shapedindexmarkonthefrontplateoftheshutter.Theaperturemarkings
inredoneithersideofthiswhiteindexshowthezoneofsharpnesswhich
extendsoneithersideofthefocuseddistance,atdifferentlensapertures.
Theshutterspeedissetbyrotatingthemilledouterring(6)onthelens
panelsothatthedesiredshutterspeed,either1/25,1/50or1/200sec,lies
againstthesamewhiteindexmarkasisusedforthefocusingscale.The
"B"settingoftheshutterisusedforbrieftimeexposuresandtheshutter

willremainopensolongastheshutterreleasebuttonishelddepressed
orpressureismaintainedonthecablerelease.Thecameramustbe
mountedona tripodorotherfirmsupportwhenthe"B"settingisused.
Theaperturesettingiscontrolledbythesmalllever(7)whichisvisible
onthetopofthelensmounting;theknifeedgeoftheleverissetagainst
thedesiredlensaperturemarking.
TAKINGTHEPICTURE
Afterthelenshasbeenfocused,theshutterspeedsetandthecorrect
aperturechosen,thesubjectisviewedthroughtheopticalviewfinder.
Holdthecamerafirmlywithbothhandsandthengentlysqueezethe
shutterreleasewiththeforefingeroftherighthand.Whenusinga shutter
speedof1/25sec,takeupasfirma stanceaspossible,leaningagainsta
solidobjectsuchasa wall,orsomesimilarsupport.
Insettingthefocusingscale,distancesupto12feetshouldbeestimated
ormeasuredaccurately,butgreaterdistancescanbeestimatedapproxi-
mately.
Thecorrectapertureandshutterspeedscanbeestimatedfromthe
exposuretablesprovidedonpage11ofthisinstructionbooklet,ora
photo-electricorotherexposuremetermaybeused.
Aftertheexposurehasbeenmade,therapidwindlevershouldbe
operatedimmediatelysothatthecameraisatoncereadyfora further
exposure.Thelevershouldalwaysbemovedfirmlyandsmoothlytothe
endofitstravel.Thisisimportantbecauseifthefullmovementisnot
made,theshutterwillnot besetandnoexposurewillbemadewhenthe
shutterreleaseispressed.Thewindlevershouldnot beallowedtoreturn
freelyunderthepressureofitsspringbutshouldbecontrolledbythe
thumb,sothatitmovesbacksmoothlyandgentlytoitspositionready
forthenextoperation.

Whenyouhaveexposedallthe20or36exposuresonthefilm,itmustbe
completelyrewoundintothecassettebeforethecamerabackisopened.
Thefilmisrewoundbydepressingtherewindreleasebuttoninthebase-
plateofthecameraandbyturningtherewindknobina clockwisedirection
asshownbythearrow.Rewindingshouldbecontinued untilthefilm
pullsawayfromthetake-upspool.Ifthefilmwasproperlyattachedto
thetake-upspoolwhenthecamerawasloadedsomeresistancewillbefelt
atthispoint.Whenthefilmhasbeencompletelyrewoundthecamera
backcanbeopenedandthecassetteremovedfromthecamera.
SNAPSHOTSETTINGS
Onanaveragesunnydayinsummerandwitha medium-speedfilmsuch
asIlfordFP3,thecameracanbesetsothatitisreadyforuseatalltimes
withoutfurtheradjustment.Theapertureshouldbesettof/11andthe
shutterspeedto1/50sec.;thefocusingscaleshouldthenbesetto14feet.
Itwillthenbeseenthatthedepthoffieldextendsfromabout7 feetto
infinityandtheSportsmancanbeusedsimplyasa snapshotcamera.
FLASHSYNCHRONISATION
Asmallflashgun,suchastheEnvoyBriton,canbefittedintothe
accessoryshoe(13)onthetopofthecameraabovetheviewfinder.
Thesynchronisingleadoftheflashgunisconnectedtothecamerabythe
standard3 mm.contactatthebaseofthelenspanel.Makesurethat
theconnecterispushedfirmlyhomebeforeusingthecamera.
TheVarioshutterhas"X"synchronisationsothateitherelectronic
flashunitsorexpendableflashbulbsmaybeused.Electronicflashunitsmay
beusedatanyshutterspeedfrom1/25sec.to1/200sec.andexpendable
flashbulbsata shutterspeedof1/25sec.

CHOOSINGTHERIGHTEXPOSURE
Theexposuretimesandlensaperturesgiveninthesetablesmaybeused
fromthreehoursaftersunrisetothreehoursbeforesunset,alltheyear
round.Withshutterspeedsotherthanthosequoted,thelensaperture
shouldbealteredaccordingly.
