Torque Information
Individualtorquechartsappear attheendof each
chapter.Torquevalues are expressed two ways,Set-To
andIn-UseRecheck. The Set-Tovalue is usedwhen
assemblingcomponents. The In-UseRecheckvalue is
used to checkpre-tighteneditems.
Refer tothe StandardTorqueSpecifications andCap-
screwMarkingsChart in thischapter for torques not
listed in individualtorquecharts.Notethattorquespec-
ificationsgiven inthe chart are based onuseof clean
and dry threads.Reducetorque by10 percentwhen
threads are lubricatedwithengine oilandby20 percent
ifnew,platedcapscrews are used.

Ton-leadFasteners
Varioussizes of internal and externalhex-lobular
(Torx)headfasteners are used as attachinghardware on
numerouscomponents and assemblies in 1979Jeep ve-
hicles. Duetothe ever-changingusage and application
ofautomotivefasteners,Torx-headfasteners maynotbe
identified as suchthroughoutthismanual.However,
thesefasteners maybe removed or installedusingTool
Set J-25359-02.

OJModels
Two CJ models are available for1979:the 83.5-inch
wheelbaseCJ-5,model 83,andthe 93.5-inchwheelbase
CJ-7, model93. See figures A-land A-2.Beyond the10-
inchdifference in wheelbase, CJ-5andCJ-7 differpri-
marily in availableoptions. CJ-7 models are available
with an automatictransmission,Quadra-Tracfull-time
4-wheeldrive, anda moldedhardtop.Theseoptions are
notavailable on CJ-5models.
TheRenegadePackagecontinues tobe offered onCJ
models for 1979. It features new 9-inch by 15-inchtires
mounted on 8-inch wide,styled-steelwheelsalongwith
uniqueexterior and interiortrim.
TheGoldenEagletrimpackagecontinues tobe avail-
able on1979CJ models. The packageincludesunique
exteriorpaint and decals,9-inch by 15-inchtires
mounted on 8-inch wide,slotted-steelwheels,rear
mountedsparetire,roll bar,and deluxeinteriorwith a
clock and tachometer.

headed(codeD)keyoperatestheignitionswitch,front
doorlocks,andandCherokee-Wagoneertailgates.The
oval-headed(codeE)keyoperatesthegloveboxlock.
Eachkeyhasa codenumberstampedontheknock-out
plug.Intheeventa keyislost,a newkeycanbemadeby
convertingthekeycodenumbertoa keybittingnumber.
Keybittingnumberscanbeobtainedfroma keycutting
machinemanufacturer'scross-referencelistorbycon-
tactingyourZoneoffice.
Ifa keyislostandthekeycodenumberisun-
known,thecorrectnumbercanbeidentifiedbythe
Zoneofficefromthevehicleidentificationnumber.
Iftheignitionkeyislostandthekeycodenumberis
notavailable,a newkeycanbemadebyremovinga
doorlockandtakingittoa locksmith.Thelocksmithcan
determinethekeybittingbyinsertinga blankkeyinto
thelockcylinderandcuttingtheblanktomatchthe
tumblers.
Iftheignitionswitchlockisdefectiveandthekeyis
available,thecylinderandindividualtumblerscanbe
orderedandmatchedtotheexistingkey.Todetermine
thetumblerarrangement,placethekeyoverthetem-
plate(fig.A-ll).Startingfromtheleft,readacrossthe
horizontallinesandrecordfirstdigit(number1 posi-
tion)ofthekeycode.Continuethisprocessforsub-
sequentnumbers2 through5.
NOTE: The template shown in figure A-ll may be used
to determine the key bitting code of a key for which the
key code number is unknown.
