1.GENERAL
1.1. PURPOSEOFCAMERA AND ITS FEATURES
Camera KIEV-19is aminiature reflex cameraof systemTTLwithsemiautomatic setting of exposure. It is intendedfor
amateurphotographing.
Thecamerais designed for using the photographic film 35mm wide inthe standard magazines(36pictures sizing 24x36
mm inloading of 1.65mof film).
CameraKIEV-19is released withlens MCHELIOS-81H (diaphragm setting range 2...16,focal length 50 mm, relative
aperture 1:2). The lensis provided with special multilayeranti-reflection coating of whichthe marking (MC) is indicative. The
multilayer anti-reflection coating improves the quality of animage andincreases its contrast grade on account of increasing
the integral transparency anddecreasingthe light dispersion by the lens.
The lens joint is of abayonet type, the threadfor a light filteris 49x0.75.
Thedesignof the camera envisages the use of the change lenses which are specially released for cameras KIEV-17, KIEV-19
and KIEV-20.The change lenses of camera NIKONcan also be used.
The metal curtain shutterensures the speeds in the range from1/500to 1/2 s and "B".
The curtaintravel occurs along the short side of the picturefrom bottomto top.
The view finderisof areflectingbrilliant type.
TheFresnel lens and the condenser lens in thefinder ensure the increased brightness of animageand, thus, theopportunity
ofshootingunder conditions of weak lightening.
The field of visionof the viewfinder occupies 93% of the picture area.
The focusing is carried out withthe aid of a wedge, microscreen ring and groundglass.
The shutter cocking mechanism is interlocked withthe filmtransport mechanism.
Thepicturecountercounts offthenumbers of the pictures takenand is automatically reset to the initialposition when the
back is opened.
Theexposuremeterof thecameraofsystem TTL enables to determinethe exposure by the light passing through the lens at
an actual diaphragm set onthe lens scale.
Note: The Kiev-19Moffers TTL exposure metering at open diaphragm.
Theadvantageandconvenience of measuring system TTLconsists inthe automatic taking intoaccountof all factors which
influence the exposure value.
Theworking range of theexposuremeteris equal to 6.4...13,000cd/m whenthe regularlens(relative aperture 1:2)is
used. While determining the exposure, take into accountthe film sensitivityvaluein the range from 16 to 500 units asper
GOST - State Standard(from 13to 28 units as perDIN).
Note: TheKiev-19M's exposure meterhasaworking rangeof 4.8~13,900cd/m andallowsforfilm speeds inthe range of
25~3200ISO/GOST.
Thebattery cell rated for3V(overall dimension:diameter12mm, 8mm long)serves asapower source for theexposure
meter.
Note: TheKiev-19M usesonePX28lithium type6Vbatteryor four piecesof AG-13/LR-44/SR-44type 1.5 Vbatteriesina
small plastic adapter. Asfaras theKiev-19itself is concerned,I'veheard thattwo pieces ofLR-44/S76/SR43Wtype 1.5 V
batteries fit.

The camera is provided withasynchronizer for combined operation with flash lamps.
The camera back is folding, hinged andcanbe removedfrom the camera, when necessary.
The delivery set of the camera includes a detachableeye-cup which's design envisages the use of a dioptric lens.

4.CAMERA OPERATION PROCEDURE
4.1. INSTALLATION OF POWERSOURCE
To install thepowersource, unscrew cover20arrangedfrombelow the camera.Insertthebatterycell into the power source
recess, observingthe polarityindicated onthe cover(plustowards the cover).
Note: The Kiev-19M doesn'thaveascrew cover for thebattery compartment, butahinged one.Openitand insertthe
battery, observingpolarity (plus towards plus, minus towards minus).
Screw upcover andcheck the operation of thepower source bypressing on lever 3.Inthis casethe lightsignals (one or
two) must light upfromthe left-handside ofthe field ofvisionof the view finder.
Note: For checking the power source on the Kiev-19M, press the shutter release button 5 halfway down. In this caseoneor
two ofthe LEDs onthe left-handedside ofthe viewfinderfield of visionmust light up.
4.2. CAMERA LOADING
The camera is loadedwiththe film in the magazines.
Thecameracanbeloaded inthedaylight(it is advisable toloadat weak lighting, at least intheshadow from yourown
body).
Pull up rewinding knob 9. In this case back 24must get opened.

Insert magazine 26 with filminto the left-handrecess inthe camerabody.
Lower the rewinding knobas far as it will go.
Fix thefilm on reel 27,havingthreaded thefilmend intoone oftheslots in the reel.Inthis case thefilm perforation must
become engaged with teeth 28 ofthe sprocket. Ifnecessary, the filmcan be straightened by rotationof the take-up reel.
Close the camera back.
Set the sensitivity of the film loaded inthecamera by pressing on button7and turning scale 8 until thefilm sensitivity value
coincideswithred index 6on the uppercover.
4.3. PREPARINGOF CAMERA FORSHOOTING
Cock theshuttertwice by lever 4,pressingafter eachcockingon release button5. Atthenext cocking of theshutterthe
digit "1" ofthepicture counter will be setopposite the index. If thecamera hasbeenloadedcorrectly, during the cocking of
the shutterrewindingknob 9rotates.When the film windingis not tight, itmay happen thatduring the first pictures the
rewindingknobwill not rotate.
4.4. SHOOTING
The shooting process consists of thefollowing jobs:
shutter cockingandfilm rewinding;
determining the exposure (shutter speedanddiaphragm);
viewing and framing;
focusing;
releasing the shutter.
T he s h u t t e rc o c k i ng and thef i l m r e w i nd in g arecarried out by turning lever 4 counter-clockwise
as faras itwill go. Inthis case the scale of thepicture counterturns throughone division.
The free travel ofthe cock within35°is envisaged forconvenience in operationandstowingthe camerainthe case.
Whenthe cocking has beenfully completed, the lever is automatically returned to the initial position. When the cockingis
incomplete, the leverremains in theintermediate position (in this case the shuttermustbe additionally cocked).
To de t erminetheexpos ur e, direct the cameraonto the subject sothat its image would bearranged within
the field of vision of the view finder.
Thefield of measurement of theexposuremeter has anoval shape, arrangedinthe middlepart of theviewfinder frame
with the offset to thelower sideof theframe (ref.to the Figure).
Note: Themeasurement zoneof the Kiev-19M is acircle with 12mm in diameterlocated centrally around the microscreen
ring.
Switch onthe exposuremeter by pressingon lever3as far as it will go(inthis case the diaphragm settingmechanism
operates). Keep lever 3 in the depressed position until the end of determining theexposure.
Note: To usetheKiev-19M's exposuremeter, press halfway down the shutterreleasebutton 5 instead of fully pressing down
its depth-of-field preview lever 3. You also need to remain inthis halfwaypressed down positionuntil you'refinished with
metering.
The light indication of the exposure meter is arranged fromthe left-handside ofthefield ofvision of theview finder: upper
signal - MORELIGHT, lower signal - LESSLIGHT. The blinkingoftwosignals inturnis a normal condition for shooting NORM.
Setthe exposurerequired for shootingpreliminary byturninghead 11until the fixing of theselected exposurevalue
oppositeindex 10arrangedover thehead. Then, while keeping lever 3in the depressed position (forKiev-19M: while
keeping shutterrelease button 5in thehalfwaypressed downposition), slowly turnlensdiaphragm setting ring17until the
instant of blinking of two signals. The diaphragm value, whichwill be set automatically upon pressingon the release button,
will be opposite theindex onscale 18.
Note: If using the Kiev-19M, overread thenext twoparagraphsand thefollowingtable, since it hasexposure metering at
opened diaphragm.
Owing to thefact thatdeterminingof the exposureis carried outatan actualdiaphragmas well as taking into account the
technicalparametersof thephotodetector and the operatingrangeofthe exposure meter,in shootingyou areto setthe
shutter speeds not greater thanthose below.
Forexample, when shooting onthe film possessingthe sensitivityof20-18units asper DIN withthe fully opened
diaphragm, set the shutterspeed of notover 1/8swhichis aNORMforthebrightness of asubject to beshotequalto6.4
cd/m .Intheevent of thegreater brightness theNORMis obtained either by slight closingof the diaphragm or by
decreasingthe shutter speed.

26-241/30
23-211/15
20-181/8
17-151/4
14-131/2
Note: Now alsoKiev-19Musers need to readon.

Theexposure meter determines theexposurebythe integrated (total) brightness ofthe subjectswhich arein thefield of
measurement.Thereforein shooting thesubjects whichsharply differ inthe brightness (e. g. aman onthe snow
background),theexposure for themainsubject can be determined incorrectly.Inthis caseyou arerequired to makea
correction (e.g. increase the diaphragm value).
Notes: 1. To prolong the service life of the power source, limit the time of operation of the exposuremeter.5...10sare
sufficientfor determiningthe exposure.
Under such operatingconditions, the exposure of8-10filmsper month within ayearis ensured without replacementof the
power source. 2. In operation under conditionsof weaklighting, switch on the exposure meterin15...20s afteraimingat a
subject to minimizetheeffectofpersistenceof thephotodetector. 3. To excludethe errors indetermining theexposure,
press onlever 3 as far as it will go (forKiev-19M: halfwaypress down shutterreleasebutton 5) and usetheeye-cup without
fail.
Whenthechangelenses withrelative aperturesof1:1.4; 1:2.8;1:3.5; 1:4are used, thelower limit ofoperationofthe
exposure meteris equal to 3.2, 12.8, 17.9and25 cd/m respectively.
Car ry o utthev i e w i ng and f r a m i n gof asubject to be shot by examining its image in eyepiece 23in
the field of vision of the view finder.
Pe r f o r m t he f o c usi ng by turning of lens ring 19until the image on the microscreen and groundglass becomes
sharp. When asubject to be shot has apparently expressed verticallines, thefocusingcan be carriedout with theaid of the
wedges, arranged inthe centre of the ground glass,by matching twohalvesof animage.
Check thefocal depth by an imageof parts of a subject to beshoton the ground glass, having preliminarily pressed on lever
3 so as to set thelens diaphragm.
Thefocusing and framingcanbecarried outbothwiththe exposuremeterswitched on and switched off. Switchonthe
exposure meteronlyfor the time requiredfordetermining theexposure so as to save the enrgy ofthe powersource.
R e l e a s et h e s h u t t e r by smooth pressingon release button5as farasitwill go.Prior to operation of the shutter
the lens diaphragm is automatically set tothe preliminarily set value, determined with the aid of the exposure meter.

4.5. CAMERA UNLOADING
Press on button 22 andreleaseit.Thebuttonmustbefixed inthe depressed position. Throw outhandle 15and rotate it
clockwise until the film hasbeen completely rewoundinto the magazineof which the abruptweakening of the rotation force
is indicative.
4.6. SHOOTINGWITH FLASH LAMP
Different flash lamps canbe used inshooting with cameraKIEV-19.
Forconnection oftheflash lamp to the camera the latter is providedwith acentral contact in clip 14 andplug jack 13.This
provides an opportunity of usingtheflash lamp with acentral contact (cableless connection)orthe flash lamp with aplug
connector (cable connection).
The minimumshutter speedin operationwith the flashlampis equal to 1/60s.
N ot e: Prior to fitting the flash lamp into clip 14, remove the safety insert fromthe clip.
5.LENS REPLACEMENT
To remove thelens, press onlens lock lever 12as far asit will goand disconnect the lens from thecameraby turning it
