PROLOGUE
Thank you very much for your confidence in our product line-up and purchasing professional KS
AUDIO sound reinforcement tools!
Please read this manual carefully and do not hesitate contacting KS AUDIO headquarter having
further questions depending the utilization of your product.
With the CPD 14, KS offers professional users a real full-range active loudspeaker with the highest
audio quality in a compact format. There is hardly any scope in which the CPD 14 cannot be used
successfully: Theatre sound system, live music stage, studio monitoring, or as a compact midrange
system in conjunction with CPD subwoofers.

CPD14|ManualPAGE|5
QUICKSTART
Please inspect the speaker and any accessories while unpacking the CPD 14 for possible defects or
transport damages. Damaged devices could endanger yourself and other equipment. When setting
up the speakers, you should point them to the center of the space you want to cover, and if
necessary, use a stand or flying frame to elevate the speaker to a desired height. Please be sure the
power switch is turned to the off position and the input level is set to minimum in order to avoid
possible problems. After connecting all power and audio cables for the system, turn on the CPD 14
and increase the input volume to the desired level. Now you are ready to start!

COMPONENTS
CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL / CABINET FINISHES
Active audio systems have very high demands placed on them. You cannot allow vibrations of the
material to colour the sound. There are many heavy and sensitive components that must be kept
safe during transport. To ensure a high standard of sound reproduction, safety of the components,
and successful transportation, KS uses only, water resistant, birch plywood at a thickness of 18 mm,
and the front panel is even thicker to support the weight of the drivers mounted on it. CNC
(Computer Numerical Control) milling and drilling technology is used to guarantee the highest
dimensional accuracy. The joints are crafted to be solid: gluing with tongue and groove joints, as
well as bolting or screwing where necessary. The amplifier chassis uses solid steel rails in a separate
section of the cabinet to ensure further reliability. All detachable connections have metric threads.
There are two available surface finishes for the cabinet. A scuff resistant textured polyurethane
surface coating in a black colour is for heavy-duty touring applications whereas, for fixed
installations, and colour conscious environments where design and colour matching are equally
important, the surface finish can be preselected from a palette of 200 available RAL colours to
match.
PHYSICAL HANDLING
For safe handling, the CPD 14 loudspeakers are optionally equipped with solid recessed grips. For
operation on tripods, a high stand flange (36mm) is embedded in the bottom. On request, there
are also four adjustable feet made of particularly abrasion-resistant plastic, so that the surface is not
damaged by rough standing surfaces. Membranes are sensitive to mechanical impact and
moisture. A powder-coated stamped steel grid with particularly fine perforation offers good
mechanical stability and high sound transmission. The CPD 14 has 2x M10 attachment points on
the side, which are located on the right or the left side, depending on the design of the box,
opposite the side-mounted subwoofers.
WOOFER
The DSP controller uses FIR filtering technology for true-to-noise playback. One of the three
integrated amplifiers provides 500W RMS power to the 10 "woofers. The two woofers are housed in
the side of the case. This gives the CPD14 a slim silhouette that resembles a normal line speaker
and can always be easily accommodated.
BASS PORTS
An essential role in the production of low frequencies is the acoustic attenuation of a precisely
tuned bass reflex type loudspeaker enclosure. Below a defined frequency cut-off is a significant
increase in pressure that restricts the available diaphragm movement and similarly increases
distortion and mechanical stresses. Accurate and in-phase low frequency reproductions is achieved
through the special shape of adding the dual bass reflex ports on the front panel, and are a
renowned KS feature of design quality. The two bass reflex ports have a large exponential cross
sectional contour, resulting in high efficiency and low distortion due to minimal losses at the
tunnel openings. Additionally, the interior walls of the enclosure are lined with a layer of acoustic
dampening polyester fibre material.
MID FREQUENCY SPEAKERS AND WAVEGUIDE/HORN
The power electronics include a wide-range power supply with Powerfactor Correction, two "cold"
PWM amplifiers for the low and mid-range chassis and an analogue FET amp with the best audio
properties for the high-frequency driver. The four 5 "midrange drivers feature powerful,
lightweight neodymium magnets. Its transmission range is additionally adapted to the line height
with a passive filter circuit.

CPD14|FULLRANGE
CPD14|ManualPAGE|7
The 1 3/4 "ring diaphragm of the tweeter driver is made of Mylar which produces significantly less
harmonic distortion than comparable metal diaphragms. The remaining two amplifiers provide
RMS power to the 5 "midrange drivers per 250W and the 1 3/4" ring diaphragm driver.
Unique is the construction of the high frequency waveguide/horn and its electronic adaptation to
the four midrange drivers. The result is a vertically narrow beam angle, whereby the vertical
curving of the wavefront also continues in the range of the cut-off frequency and cannot detect
any losses there. With correct positioning of the loudspeaker, all listeners are therefore provided
with the same direct sound and unwanted sound energy in the room is reduced.
POWERAMPLIFIER OUTPUTS
The DSP controller uses FIR filtering technology for true-to-noise playback. Three built-in amplifiers
deliver 100W RMS power to the 10 "500W woofers, the 5" midrange drivers 250W and the 1 3/4
"ring diaphragm driver - peak power is over 1.5kW!
POWERSUPPLY
A modern wide-range switching power supply with power-factor correction is used here. When
mounting the heavy components, the strong vibrations of the bass speaker were taken into
account. Separate control circuits are available for the power supply of the controller electronics.
COOLING
Power amplifiers generate dissipated heat that would destroy the semiconductor devices unless
sufficient heat dissipation is provided. The dissipated amount of heat depends on the generated
NF-power and the used amplifier technology. Since a fan noise would be annoying in a relatively
quiet environment, the CPD 14 has 2 power amplifiers in PWM technology and a large convection
heat sink.
DRIVER PROTECTION
In normal operation state the speakers are limited by the DSP controller to safe levels. Only if the
CPD 14 is switched on the output is briefly undefined, which is why they are switched on delayed
via a mute circuit, in particular for the protection of the sensitive high-frequency drivers. If the DC
current changes by more than 0.5 V, a special detection circuit disconnects the speakers from the
amplifier for their protection. The same protection takes place if electrical shortage or low
impedance occurs. When the cause is remedied, the circuits return to their full operational status. If
the internal heat increases above 85° C (185° F), protection is engaged to deactivate the power
amps for as long as it takes to reduce the temperature to 85° C (185° F) again.
INPUT
The CPD 14 has an electronically balanced input. Relative to membrane movement of the woofer
at 100 Hz, pin 3 is the "positive" and pin 2 is the "negative" contact. To achieve optimum
impedance symmetry and thus maximum interference immunity of the supply line, KS has
developed a special amplifier stage. In case of an asymmetrical feed line, both pin 2 and pin 3 can
be used as a "hot" connection, depending on the desired phase position. The impedance is 10
kOhm, the maximum level is 22dBu. Undesired DC voltages are kept away from bipolar coupling
capacitors. For particularly critical installations, e.g. different power supplies and long signal lines,
the output of the mixer should be carried out symmetrically.
DANTE OPTION
The CPD 14 officially speaks DANTE. The optional DANTE card enables uncompressed transmission
of low-latency digital audio over long distances and to multiple locations. Adding a Dante option
card to your KS product makes your audio routing even easier and more convenient. Perfect for
delivering audio in excellent quality.

CPD14|ManualPAGE|8
KS REMOTE CONTROL
Via an Ethernet 100BaseT connection, user-specific settings can be made from PC and stored in a
preset memory. Three fully parametric band filters, low and high shelving, level, delay, limit and
additional monitoring of signal and temperature are available. The remote control software KS
REMOTE allows the compilation of arbitrary setups from different KS components, even with
different connections to the host computer. A detailed description can be found within the
corresponding manual.
LIMIT/DYNAMICS
One of the most important functions of a controller is monitoring and limiting of power supplied to
the speaker chassis. This is the only way to ensure that they can operate safely up to their
performance limits - one reason why controller PA systems are significantly smaller than
conventional loudspeakers. In the DSP, the power is constantly measured and if an admissible
value is exceeded, the individual samples are recalculated. Depending on the frequency range or
whether the average thermal power or peaks in the signal, which would lead to mechanical
overload, to be limited, this is done with different time constants. The use of the limitation is
signalled by flashing digits. The input stage of CPD 14 owns two circuits with different gain factors.
Depending on the level of the applied low-frequency signal, the channel is selected which enables
optimum modulation of subsequent A/D converter and protects it against overload. This circuit
guarantees maximum dynamic range and overdrive resistance similar to that of analogue devices.

GETTING STARTED
MAINS CONNECTION
The KS CPD 14 is designed for operation on AC networks. The wide-range switching power supply
works with voltages between 100V and 250V. The connection is made via PowerCon supply cable
with protective conductor. The controller / amplifier bays are VDE-compliant with the protective
conductor and you should use only circuits with proper grounding for your safety. The efficiency of
all KS devices is very high; the effective power requirement is therefore low. Nevertheless, the
circuit must be protected so that the sum of the maximum current consumption of all connected
devices does not exceed the fuse value.
AUDIO CONNECTORS – LINE IN/OUT
All line/audio input and output connections are a balanced electronic type conforming to the XLR
international standard, nominal 20 kOhms for matching to a typical 50 ohm impedance line output
(grounding is on pin #1). For very long cable run installations, a transformer-balanced output is
preferable to avoid ground differentials and 60 Hz
hum loops over mixed type cable runs. The
impedance is 2x 10kOhm and is discreet
(independent for pin 2 and 3). Multiple devices can
share the same input signal by using the male-female
sockets as a daisy chained audio link. A total of only 1
dB of signal loss on the input signal is seen when up
to 20 devices are sharing the same input signal. Digital AES/EBU lines should be run with 110 Ohm
cable impedance. You can daisy chain as many products you wish, as the XLR male outputs feature
an active line transmitter.
KS AUDIO recommends employing "balanced input connections”.
DIGITAL AES/EBU INPUT
The CPD 14 amplifiers have a unique feature: the signal inputs detect the presence of a digital AES
/ EBU standard signal. An automatic switchover makes the XLR M socket the active driven output.
Clock rates of 32-96 kHz are adjusted by an SRC for internal processing. The keyboard determines
the channel assignment.
THE CPD 14 AS A SATELLITE
In conjunction with low bass systems such as CPD W1, the CPD 14 is used with the help of the
LowCut function only above its frequency range. The KS subwoofers have a 70 or 120Hz switchable
low pass. The connection is made from the preamplifier / mixer to the subwoofer or the CPD 14 in
any order and from the respective parallel output to the other system. It is important to make sure
that the connection is in correct phase. If the CPD 14 is to be used in conjunction with other
subwoofers or full-range loudspeakers with sufficient low-bass content, the phase must first be
checked.

CONTROLS AND INDICATORS
LEVEL
The nominal level for full scale is 4dBv, which corresponds to the international standard for the
mixer display VU = 0dB. However, it may be useful to adjust the sensitivity, for example if different
systems are operated simultaneously at the same output. The left key pair allows you to increase or
decrease by 9dB in 1dB increments. The input impedance of the CPD 14 remains constant.
DELAY
An important feature in daily public address practice is the ability to electronically adapt a
loudspeaker to the natural sound transit time at its site. The CPD 14 has a digital delay, which you
can set exactly in both, meters and milliseconds. The changeover is carried out by simultaneously
holding down the "up" and "down" buttons and is signalled by the upper LED. This means that you
can easily operate multiple delayed sound systems on just one line. Of course, the setting is
retained in event of power failure.

To change the LowCut frequency (for example, for subwoofer operation), use the Menu button to
select LowCut and then use the up / down buttons to select 70Hz or 120Hz. The horizontal lines in
the display stand for full-range operation.
REMOTE AND DEVICELOCK MODUS
The CPD 14 is optimally adjusted at the factory - the epitome of "Plug and Play". However, it is
possible and sometimes required that you make your own settings using REMOTE software
according to the room acoustics, the program material or your personal taste and load them into
the CPD 14 via the Ethernet connection. Of course, you can save all settings as a preset in the PC
and have the same initial conditions at next start up.
Another way to save your personal presets is to enable „DeviceLock“ mode in the KS REMOTE for
the CPD 14. As a result, the operation is disabled on the amplifier and the display is now much
darker. Your settings will be retained until you deactivate the „DeviceLock“ mode either by PC or by
simultaneously pressing the two "Level" buttons when switching on the CPD 14.
KEYLOCK
You can protect the settings on the CPD 14 from changes by enabling the „KeyLock“. To do this,
press the MENU button for more than 3 seconds - the green indicator LED goes off. The activation
also takes place by holding it down for more than 3 seconds again.
MAINS SWITCH
In the "1" position, a 2-pole rocker switch labeled "mains" (Main Switch) connects the cables from
the PowerCon socket to the power supply. The CPD 14 is ready to operate if, after a few seconds,
the numeric displays "88" change over to the normal state levels.

TRANSPORTATION
KS products are tools for daily professional use and are correspondingly, robustly manufactured.
You however should be aware of these aspects of note:
As with all types of electronic devices, condensation and moisture must be avoided i.e. when the
speaker comes from a cold and humid truck and is brought into a warm venue, give the system as
much time as possible to heat up to venue temperature before powering on.
Of course, direct exposure to liquids is never safe and should be prevented at all times. The
vibrations of a transport vehicle are safe - all components and cabinetry are well assembled,
secured with screwed or bolted parts for extra strength where necessary.
It has however been shown that train or airplane transport without further packaging creates un-
due stress on KS products. We recommend for such situations shock resistant flight cases.
Significant contamination by dust, etc. is dangerous for Electronic assemblies as it may cause a
short circuit. It is therefore advisable, that the devices are periodically opened, and cleaned out
with compressed air.
