The Chimney System
Soot and Creosote - Formation and Need for Removal
Whenwoodisburnedslowly,itproducestarandotherorganic
vapors,whichcombinewithexpelledmoisturetoformsoot
orcreosote.Thesootandcreosotevaporscondensein
therelativelycoolchimneyueofaslowburningre.As
aresult,sootorcreosoteresidueaccumulatesontheue
lining.Whenignited,thissootorcreosotecanresultinan
extremelyhotre.
Thechimneyconnectorandchimneyshouldbeinspected
atleastonceeverytwomonthsduringtheheatingseason
todetermineifasootorcreosotebuild-uphasoccurred.If
sootorcreosotehasaccumulated(3mmormore)itshould
beremovedtoreducetheriskofachimneyre.
Checkingyourchimneyandchimneyconnectormore
frequently,especiallywhileyouaregettingusedtoyour
stove,isrecommended.Toinspectthissystem,letthestove
cool.Usingaashlightandmirror,checktheinteriorofthe
chimneyconnector,andthechimneyitself.
Tocleandepositsfromthesurfaceoftheconnector,usea
stiffwirebrushafterdismantlingtheconnectorassembly.To
cleanthechimney,useaspeciallydesignedbrushsizedto
tyourparticularueopening,orcallanestablishedchimney
cleaningservice.
Attheendoftheheatingseason,performathorough
examinationofyourchimneysystem,andhaveitrepaired
ifnecessary.
Draft
Draftiswidelymisunderstood.Itisimportantthatyou,the
stoveoperator,realizethatdraftisavariableeffect,nota
givenquantity.Stovesandchimneysdonothavedraft,yet
draftisthekeytoyourstove’sperformance.
Draftisaforce,producedbyanoperating stove and the
chimneytowhichitisattached.Itiscreatedbyhotgases
risingupthechimney,creatingapressuredifferencebetween
theinsideofyourhomeandtheoutsideair.Itcontinually
movesfreshcombustionairintothestove,andhotexhaust
gasesoutofthestove;withoutthisconstantow,there
willgoout.
Otherfactors,suchasbarometricpressure,winds,the
airtightnessofthehome,thetotalinsidechimneyvolume,
chimneyheightandthepresenceofventingdevicessuch
asexhaustfansalsoplayaroleinmaintaininganadequate
draft.Insomecases,awindowmayneedtobeleftopen,or
someothersourceoffreshairprovided,tokeeptheappliance
operatingproperly.Lowbarometricpressures,superinsulated
homesandexhaustfanscanreducedraft;windscanplay
havocwithdraft;andtoolargeortoosmallachimneyvolume
cancausereduceddraftduetotheexcessivecoolingornot
enoughroomtoventexhaustgasesquickly.
Somesignsofinadequatedraftaresmoking,odor,difculty
inmaintainingthere,andlowheatoutput.Overdraftcanbe
causedbyaverytallchimneyevenifitistherecommended
size,andcancauseoverringofyourstove.Signsofan
overdraftincluderapidfuelconsumption,inabilitytoslow
there,andpartsofthestoveorchimneyconnectorglowing
red.Itisimportantthatyoufollowthechimneyguidelinesin
thismanual,includingsize,type,andheighttoavoiddraft
problems.
Chimney System
Wheninstalledandoperatedaccordingtothismanual,the
TLC2000willproduceenoughhotgasestokeepthechimney
warmsothatadequatedraftismaintainedthroughoutthe
burncycle.
Chimney Connectors
Ingeneral,followingtheseguidelineswillensurecompliance
withallnationalandprovincialcodes;priortobeginningyour
installation,checkwithyourlocalbuildingcodeofcialto
checkonadditionallocalregulationswhichmayinuence
thedesignandplacementofyourventingsystem.
TheLegacyTLC2000maybeinstalledwith24(150mm)
gaugechimneyconnectorpipe.Sizeoftheconnectorshould
correspondtothesizeoftheuecollaropening.Donotuse
makeshiftcompromises.No part of the chimney connector
may pass through an attic or roof space, closet or other
concealed space, or through a oor or ceiling.Whenever
possible,avoidpassingtheconnectorthroughacombustible
wall;ifyoumust,useanapprovedwallpass-through,
describedlaterinthissection.
Assembletheconnectorbeginningattheuecollar,withthe
crimpedendspointingtowardsthestove(tokeepdebrisand
creosoteakesinsidethesystem).Eachjoint,includingthe
onetothestove’suecollarandtheonetothechimneyitself
shouldbesecuredwithatleastthreesheetmetalscrews.
Screwsmaybeamaximumof3inchesapart.A1-1/4"(30
mm)overlapisrequiredateachjoint,includingtheuecollar
attachment.Nomorethantwo90degreeelbowsshouldbe
used,andthetotallengthofconnectorshouldnotexceed
10feet(3m).Allhorizontalrunsofconnectormusthavea
minimumupwardslopeof1/4"(6mm)perfoot(20mmper
meter).
Wall Pass-throughs
Occasionallyitisnecessarytopassthechimneyconnector
throughacombustiblewalltoreachthechimney.Depending
onyourlocalbuildingcodes,andthepertinentprovincialor
nationalcodes,thereareseveralchoicesforaccomplishing
thissafely.Beforebeginningyourinstallation,contactlocal
officials,andalsothechimneyconnectorandchimney
manufacturerforspecicrequirements.
Canada: ThreemethodsareapprovedbytheCanadian
StandardsAssociation.Thediagramshowsonemethod
requiringan18"(450mm)airspacebetweentheconnector
andthewall.Itallowsuseofoneortwocoversasdescribed
inthediagram.Thetwoothermethodsaredescribedindetail
inthecurrentissueofCAN/CSAB365,thenationalstandard.
