Precautions
This document uses the following warning and caution conventions:
Cautions remind the reader to be careful. They alert readers to situations where
there is a chance that the reader might perform an action that cannot be undone,
might receive unexpected results, or might lose data. Cautions contain an
explanation of why the action is potentially problematic.
Warnings alert the reader to proceed with extreme care. They alert readers to
situations where there is a chance that the reader might do something that
can result in personal injury or equipment damage. Warnings contain an
explanation of why the action is potentially dangerous.
Safety Precautions
The following items are warnings of a general nature relating to the installation and
start-up of the JENE controller. Be sure to heed these warnings to prevent personal
injury or equipment damage.
•
Depending on power module used, the circuit powering the JENE is 24Vac
at 50/60 Hz (if using JENE-PC-PWR-UN), 120 Vac at 50/60 Hz (if using
JENE-PC-WWPM-120). Disconnect power before installation or servicing
to prevent electrical shock or equipment damage.
• Make all connections in accordance with national and local
electrical codes. Use copper conductors only.
•To reduce the risk of fire or electrical shock, install in a controlled
environment relatively free of contaminants.
•This device is only intended for use as a monitoring and control device.
To prevent data loss or equipment damage, do not use it for any other
purpose.
Static Discharge Precautions
Static charges produce voltages high enough to damage electronic components. The
microprocessors and associated circuitry within a JENE controller are sensitive to static
discharge. Follow these precautions when installing, servicing, or operating the system:
•Work in a static-free area.
•Discharge any static electricity you may have accumulated. Discharge
static electricity by touching a known, securely grounded object.
•
Do not handle the printed circuit board (PCB) without proper protection
against static discharge. Use a wrist strap when handling PCBs. The wrist
strap clamp must be secured to earth ground.

Communication Ports
JENE bottom side (cover removed)
Figure 1
Serial Ports
There are two serial ports on the JENE base unit. Each has a UART capable of operation up to
115,200 Baud. At the bottom of the board (see Figure 1), the left port is an RS-232 port using a DB-
9 plug (male) connector. To the right of this is a two-wire with shield, isolated RS-485 port, using a
screw-terminal connector plug.
A green “rece
ive” LED and yellow “transmit” LED are provided for each serial port. These
LEDs are located on the bottom board, on the opposite side of the serial connectors.
These LEDs are labeled on the board (COM 1, COM2) and are not visible with the cover
on.
RS-232—An RS-232 serial port using a male DB-9 connector always operates as COM1. You
can use standard DB-9 serial cables with this port. The JENE is a serial DTE device; such another
DTE device (PC, for example) requires a “null modem” cable. If connecting the JENE to a DCE
device (modem, for example), a reverse cable is used. Table 1 provides standard serial DB-9
pinouts.
If a modem option card (JENE-PC-MODEMCARD) is installed, this port becomes
disabled—except if rebooted with the mode jumper in the “Serial Shell” position.

Table 1 Serial port (RS-232 and RS-485) pinouts.
RS-485— An RS-485, optically isolated port uses a 3-position, screw terminal connector and
always operates as COM2. Wire to this connector with shielded 18-22AWG wiring (refer to the
TIA/EIA-485 standard). The screw terminals (from left-to-right) are shield, plus (+), and minus (–).
LEDs
LEDs for the two serial ports are located on the JENE’s bottom board, on the opposite
side of the RS-232 and RS-485 ports (see figure 2 on page 8). Labels “COM1” and
“COM2” correspond to the software configuration of the COM ports. LEDs show the
transmit and receive information for the serial ports and optional modem.
Note: You must remove the cover to the serial port LEDs.
•The yellow transmit LED indicates that the JENE is sending data out
the serial port over a communications line to a connected device.
•The green receive LED indicates that the JENE is receiving data from a connected
device.
These LEDs provide a fixed on-time when data is detected on the port. If the receive LED
is on constantly, this indicates a problem with the communications channel, such as a
shorted wire or reversed wiring.

2. Installing the Communication Option Card
A 30 pin serial communication option card (part # JENE-PC-LCDCARD, includes a data cable to
the LCD), provides communication and power from the JENE/JACE controller to the LCD. The
maximum distance allowed to power the LCD using the communication option card is limited to
50ft.
Typical applications that use this card include;
Controller Mounted (kit part no. JENE-
PCLCD-R-Unit), locally Mounted up to 50ft from the controller (kit part no. JENE-
PCLCD-R-Local) and the Hand Held or Service Tool (kit part no. JENE-PCLCD-R-
Service)
Installation Instructions
Step 1 Remove power from the JENE/JACE controller. Power to the JENE/JACE controller
must be OFF when installing or removing the JENE-PC-LCDCARD cards or damage
may occur. Also, you must be very careful to plug any JENE-PC-LCDCARD card into
its connector properly (pins aligned).
Step 2 Remove the JENE/JACE controller cover. To do this, select and press in the four tabs
on both ends of the unit and lift the cover off. Retain the cover in case the JENE-PC-
LCDCARD Housing Cover must be removed at a later date.
Step 3 Remove the battery and bracket assembly by taking out the four screws holding it in
place, setting the screws aside for later. Unplug the battery from the connector on the
JENE/JACE controller. See Figure 1 below.
Figure 1
Step 4 Remove the blanking end plate for the slot into which you are installing the JENE-PC-
LCDCARD card. Retain the blanking end plate in case the JENE-PC-LCDCARD card
must be removed at a later date.
Note:
No longer does the optional communication card block one of the serial ports (RS-232
or RS-485) on the controller.
Step 5 Carefully insert the pins of the JENE-PC-LCDCARD card into the socket of the
appropriate option slot. The mounting holes on the option board should line up with the
standoffs on the base board. If they do not, the connector is not properly aligned.
Press until the JENE-PC-LCDCARD card is completely seated. If you encounter any
resistance, check that the pins are aligned properly.

4. Mounting the Trim Ring
The trim ring (kit part no. LCD-R-TR) has multiple installation methods:
1. Secure onto a panel, wall or subpanel using bolts or screws.
2. Create pressure between a DIN rail to the back side of a panel using bolts.
Step 1 Cut a hole to the size of the trim ring
5.9” wide 3.6” tall
in the panel intended for
mounting.
Step 2 Drill four holes (max ¼”) in the panel per the figure below.
Figure 5
Step 3 Secure the trim ring to the panel using four #10 bolts. If holes are not drilled into the
panel then use four self-tapping sheet metal screws. Similarly, the trim ring may be
mounted to a wall using x/x” sheet rock screws or x/x” toggle bolts.
OR
Secure the trim ring to the panel using two 1/4” bolts, four 1/4” nuts and min 8” of
NS35/7.5 (35mm x 7.5mm) slotted DIN rail. Place the bolts through each end of a DIN
rail slot that is extending beyond the LCD. Thread a nut on each bolt and tighten the
bolt against the panel while tightening the nut against the DIN rail. This provides a
secure method of mounting the LCD by creating pressure between the back of the trim
ring and the back side of the panel.
Step 4 Make the necessary communication and power connections.
1. If the LCD is mounted less than 50 feet from the controller then connect a
reverse cable with RJ11 connectors and plug an end at the communication
option card and the other connected to the back side of the LCD.
2. If mounting distance is greater than 50 feet from the controller; you will be using
the LCD-R-RS485 component which requires 2 wires and the shield connected

from the controller’s RS-485 port to the + positive, - negative, and shield
terminals on the LCD-R-RS485 component(These are currently not labeled). To
power the LCD and LCD-R-RS485 component use a wall-wart and connect the
barrel plug to the LCD-R-RS485 component and then plug the wal-wart to a
power supply.
Figure 6
Step 5 Finally connect the RJ11 cable to the LCD, press and hold the power button to turn it
on. Then place the LCD into the trim ring by simply snapping it into the trim ring using
the four taps.

5. Mounting the LCD on DIN Rail
The LCD can be mounted on a
NS35/7.5 (35mm x 7.5mm)
DIN rail. The JENE unit base
has a molded DIN rail slot and clips. To avoid dislocation of the LCD it is recommended
the installer provide separate DIN rail locking clips to prevent the LCD from sliding off the
DIN rail if pre-mounted and then shipped.
Step 1 Securely install the DIN rail using at least two screws, near both ends of the rail.
Step 2 Push down the plastic locking clips
Step 3 Position the LCD on the rail, tilting to hook DIN rail tabs over one edge of the DIN rail.
Figure 8
Step 4 Push down and in on the LCD, to place the other edge of the LCD onto the DIN rail.
Step 5 Push the plastic locking clips back to the up position.
Step 6 To keep this final assembly together, secure at both ends with DIN rail end-
clips provided by the DIN rail vendor. This also prevents the assembly from
sliding on the DIN rail.

7. Power Options
The JENE-PCLCD-R interface device can be powered by four different and separate methods
1. Direct connection from the communication option card (part no. JENE-PC-LCDCARD)
cannot be powered via the RS-232 port on the controller.
2. A 15Vdc universal power adapter (wal-wart part no. JENE-PC-WWPM-120) with 2.1mm
barrel connection
3. Four AA batteries
4. Through LCD-R-RS485 connector by a 15Vdc universal power adapter (wal-wart part no.
JENE-PC-WWPM-120)
Each power option is related to a specific installation method.
Unit Mounting
This installation method requires the communication option card; which provides power
from the controller directly to the LCD.
Local Mounting
The installation method also requires the communication option card; which provides
power from the controller directly to the LCD.
Remote Mounting
The method of installation assumes the LCD is greater than 50ft from the controller thus
the RS232 communication and power from the communication option card is not
available. Rather communication is provided by the controllers on-board RS-485 port
and power is delivered by the wal-wart installed near the LCD and connected to the
LCD-R-485 component.
Service Tool
When using the LCD as a service tool; it is assumed the controller is preprogrammed
and has installed the Lynxspring LCD module. If a communication option card is
installed on the controller the LCD may be directly connected to it using one of the
available coiled cables (part nos. TEL-6000-06K-RJ11 (6ft) & TEL-6000-25K-RJ11
(25ft)).
When a communication option card is not installed, communications should be
programmed to the RS-232 port of the controller. Simply use the 9 pin RS-232 adaptor
(part no. 9-MA09F11), connect it to the RS-232 port and plug the LCD to it using one of
the previously mentioned coiled cables. Power to the LCD is provided by either four AA
batteries or via a universal power supply (wal-wart).
15Vdc Universal Power Adaptor (part no. JENE-PC-WWPM-120)
Both the U.S. and International models of wall power modules are self-contained
switching power supplies designed to plug into a standard building power receptacle of
appropriate voltage.
Do not plug the barrel connector from the JENE-PC-WWPM-120 into the LCD
until all other mounting and wiring is completed.

Power Button
The power button is located on the top recessed area of the LCD. To power on the LCD
simply press the power button. When the LCD is powered either by the communication
option card or the universal power supply (wal-wart) the LCD will not turn off. The LCD
may go to a standby or sleep mode but can be returned active by simply activating a
button on the face of the LCD.
When using batteries the LCD will turn itself off after 10 minutes of inactivity. Then turn
the LCD on by pressing the power button.
