Do not switch the P-SCAN to ‘ON’ position, unless you have
connected the DVD system to a Progressive Scan TV using the
Component (Pr Pb Y) video jacks.
When listening toTV programs, press TV/AV button on the remote to
set the DVD system to TV/AV mode in order for the sound to be heard.
For connecting to a VCR, see page 9 in the owner’s manual for more
details.
P-SCAN

modulator. The RF modulator
converts the video from the
DVD system so it can play
through the TV’s Antenna
connector. Refer to your

Make sure your DVD system and
TV are connected and turned on!
Playing a disc
1Press DISC on the remote control.
You can also press the SOURCE button on the front panel until “DISC” appears on the display panel.
2Turn on the TV and select the correctVideo In mode.
You should see the blue Philips DVD background screen on the TV (if no disc in the DVD system).
3Press OPEN•CLOSE 0on the front of the DVD system and load a disc, then
press the OPEN•CLOSE 0again to close the disc tray.
Make sure the disc label is facing up. For double-sided discs, load the side you want to play face up.
4Playback will start automatically. If not, press ÉÅ button.
If a disc menu appears, use 3412buttons on the remote to make the necessary selection, then press
OK to confirm. Or, use the numeric keypad on the remote to select features. Follow the instructions
given in the disc menu.
5To stop playback, press STOPÇ.
Region Codes
DVDs must be labeled for ALL regions or Region 1, in order
to play on this DVD system. ALL 1
1) Press SYSTEM MENU button.
The icon will be highlighted in the
menu bar on the TV screen.
2) Press 4button to select the Picture Setup
Menu item .
3) Press 2button to enter the Menu.
4) Press 4button to select ‘VIDEO OUT’
and 2button to enter the Menu.
5) Press 34 to select and highlight :
S-VIDEO - if you use the S-Video connection.

6) Press OK button to confirm.

Cinema System creates the same dynamic sound qualities
that you find in full-fledged cinemas and incorporates some
of the best features in home theater technology.
Other features include:
Built-in DolbyRDigital decoder, supporting DolbyR
ProLogic and virtual surround
Use the Home Cinema Audio System for a movie-theater
surround sound experience.
Additional Component Connections
Connect other audio and audio/visual equipments to the
DVD system so you can use the system’s surround sound
speakers.
Night Mode
Compress the dynamic range, reduce the differences in the
loudness of sound outputs. You are able to play the disc at
the same volume level without disturbing others.
Parental Control (Rating Level)
Set a ratings level so your children cannot watch a DVD
that has a rating higher than you set.
SleepTimer
Enable the system to switch to standby mode automatically
at a preset time.
Progressive Scan
Provides a flicker free image with the highest effect on film
based sources. It can double the vertical resolution of the
picture to 525 lines every time the picture is refreshed. To
enjoy the full quality potential offered by
progressive scan feature, a progressive scanTV is
required.

Environmental information
All unnecessary packaging has been omitted. We have tried
to make the packaging easy to separate into three materials:
cardboard (box), polystyrene foam (buffer) and
polyethylene (bags, protective foam sheet.)
Your system consists of materials which can be recycled
and reused if disassembled by a specialized company. Please
observe the local regulations regarding the disposal of
packaging materials, exhausted batteries and old equipment.
Installation
●Place the player on a flat, hard, stable surface.
●There must be sufficient room in front of the player for the
drawer to open.
●In a cabinet, allows about 10cm (4 inches) of free space all
around the player for adequate ventilation.
●Do not expose your player to extreme temperatures or
humidity.
Maintenance
●When a disc becomes dirty, clean it
with a cleaning cloth.Wipe the disc
from the center out, in a straight
line.
●Do not expose the player, batteries
or discs to humidity, rain, sand or
excessive heat (caused by heating
equipment or direct sunlight.)
Always keep the disc tray closed to avoid getting dust on
the lens.
●Do not use solvents such as benzene, thinner, commercially
available cleaners, or anti-static spray intended for analog
discs.
●The lens may cloud over when the player is suddenly
moved from cold to warm surroundings, making it
impossible to play a disc. Leave the player in the warm
environment until the moisture evaporates.

IMPORTANT!
–Before connecting the AC power cord to the
wall outlet, ensure that all other connections have
been made.
–Never make or change any connections with
the power switched on.
–The type plate is located at the rear or bottom
of the system.
Step 1: Connecting antennas
AM Indoor Loop Antenna
Connect the supplied AM loop antenna to the AM
jack. Place the antenna on a shelf or attach it to a
stand or wall.
FM Indoor Antenna
Connect the supplied FM antenna
to the FM (75Ω)jack. Extend the
FM antenna and fix its ends to the
wall.
For better FM stereo reception, connect an external FM
antenna using an 75 ohm coaxial cable (not supplied.)
Helpful Hints:
–Adjust the position of the antennas for optimal reception.
–Position the antennas as far as possible from your TV,VCR
or other radiation source to prevent unwanted interference.
Step 2: Connecting the
speakers and passive subwoofer
Connect the supplied speaker systems and passive
subwoofer using the supplied speaker cables by matching
the colors of the jacks and speaker cables.
●Press up (or down) the speaker’s jack and fully insert the
stripped portion of the speaker cable into the jack, then
release.

Helpful Hints:
–Ensure that the speaker cables are correctly connected.
Improper connections may damage the system due to short-
circuit.
–For optimal sound performance, use the supplied speakers.
–Do not connect more than one speaker to any one pair of
+/-speaker jacks.
–Do not connect speakers with an impedance lower than
the speakers supplied. Please refer to the SPECIFICATIONS
section of this manual.

Step 3: Connecting a TV
IMPORTANT!
–There are various ways to connect the system
to aTV (as shown in the illustration), it depends
on the capabilities of your TV system.
–The progressive scan video quality is only
possible through Pr/Cr Pb/CbY output and a
progressive scan TV is required.
●To view the DVD playback
Use the video cable (yellow) to connect the system’s
VIDEO OUT jack to the video input jack on the TV.
●You can make an extra video connection with
one of the following options if yourTV has the
same input connector
Option 1
1Use the component video cables (red/blue/green) to
connect the system’s Pr/Cr Pb/CbY jacks to the
corresponding Pr/Cr Pb/Cb Y input jacks on the TV.
2If you are using a Progressive Scan TV (TV must
indicate Progressive Scan or ProScan capability), set the
P-SCAN switch (located at rear panel) to “ON.”
Otherwise, set it to “OFF.“
OR
Option 2
Use the S-video cable (not supplied) to connect the
system’s S-VIDEO OUT jack to the S-Video input jack on
the TV.
IMPORTANT!
If S-VIDEO or Component video Pr/Cr Pb/CbY is
used for DVD playback connection, the system’s
VIDEO OUT setting will need to be set
accordingly. Details are on page 14.
●If yourTV only has an RF-style jack (Antenna In or
75 ohm)
You will need an RF modulator in order to view the
playback of DVD dics on your TV. Ask your dealer for
details on RF modulator availability and compatibility.
Follow the instructions provided with the RF modulator to
connect the DVD system to your TV.

1) Listening to the playback of other equipment
Connect the system’s AUDIO IN (TV or AUX) jacks to
the AUDIO OUT jacks on the other audio/visual device
(such as a TV, VCR, Laser Disc player or cassette deck.)
Before starting operation, press TV/AV or AUX on the
remote control to activate the corresponding input source.
2) Using theVCR for recording DVDs
Connect the system’s VIDEO OUT jacks to the
VIDEO IN jacks and AUDIO OUT jacks to the AUDIO
IN jacks on the VCR. This will allow you to make analog
stereo (two channel, right and left) recordings.
3) Digital Recording (Coaxial or Optical)
Connect the system’s DIGITAL OUT-COAXIAL jack
to the DIGITAL COAXIAL IN jack (or DIGITAL OUT-
OPTICAL to DIGITAL OPTICAL IN) on a digital
recording device (such as Dolby Digital decoder, CD
recorder).
Before starting operation, set the DIGITAL OUTPUT
according to the audio connection. (See page 14.)

Inserting batteries into the
remote control
1Open the battery compartment.
2Place the batteries in the
compartment with the correct
polarity as indicated by “+“ and “-“
symbols.
3Close the cover.
CAUTION!
–Remove batteries if they are exhausted or if the
remote is not to be used for a long time.
–Do not use old and new or different types of
batteries in combination.
–Batteries contain chemical substances, so they
should be disposed off properly.
Switching on the system
1After completing all the connections, connect the AC
power cord of the player to the power outlet.
2Press STANDBY ON to switch on the last selected
source.
3Press the SOURCE button (or TV/AV, DISC,TUNER
or AUX on the remote) to select the input source.
➜The selected source is displayed.
●For viewing a DVD or VCD disc, you have to connect
a TV (refer to “Connections - Connecting a TV”.)
Switch on the TV and set to the correct video in channel
(for example, EXT1, EXT2, AV1, AV2.) Refer to your TV
instruction manual for details.
➜The default screen appears on the TV.
Setting up the surround sound
system
You must connect all the speakers and set up the system
properly in order to enjoy the Digital Cinema experience at
home (refer to “Connections - Connecting the speakers
and passive subwoofer”.) You will have the feeling of being
in the middle of the action because sound is coming from
everywhere around you. The subwoofer can enhance the
bass performance of your system dramatically.
IMPORTANT!
Please sit at your usual listening position in order
to set up the speaker balance correctly.
Placing the speakers
To obtain the best surround effect, place the speakers as
follows.
1Place the front left and right speakers at equal distances
from the TV and at an angle of approximately 45 degrees
from the listening position.
2Place the center speaker above or below the TV so the
center channel’s sound is localized.
3Place the surround speakers at normal listening ear level
facing each other or mounted on the wall.
4Place the subwoofer on the floor near theTV.
Notes:
–To avoid magnetic interference, do not position the front
speakers too close to your TV.
–If the rear surround speakers are installed farther away
from the listening position than the front and center speakers,
it will weaken the surround effect.
–All speakers should be securely installed to prevent
accidents and improve sound quality.

Changing the volume level
You can change the speakers’ sound distribution to suit
your surround sound needs.
●Press CENTER +/-to adjust the volume level of the
center speaker.
➜“CNT +XX DB”appears.
●Press REAR +/-to adjust the volume level of the rear
surround speakers.
➜“RE +XX DB”appears.
●Press SUBW +/-to adjust the volume level of the
passive subwoofer.
➜“SUB +XX DB”appears.
Helpful Hint:
–“XX”denotes the volume level between -15db to 10db.
Activating progressive scan
mode
The progressive-scan display presents 60 complete frames
per second, rather than the 30 frames per second of
interlaced scanning (ordinary normal TV system.) With
nearly double the numbers of line, progressive scan offers
higher picture resolution and eliminates bothersome
motion artifacts those jagged edges on moving objects.
To enjoy the full quality potential offered by
progressive scan feature, a progressive scanTV is
required.
1Press STANDBY ON to switch the system off.
2Slip the P-SCAN switch (located at back panel) to “ON”
position.
3Press STANDBY ON again to switch the system on.
Helpful Hints:
–The progressive scan video quality is only possible through
Pr/Cr Pb/CbY video output connection.
–You need to switch the system off before changing the
progressive scan mode.
System Setup (DVD)
The system setup is carried out via the TV, enabling you to
customize the DVD system to suit your particular
requirements. If the preferred options selected are not
available on a disc, then the disc’s own preference will be
used.

To access the System Setup menu, playback must
be stopped.

TV SHAPE
Select the aspect ratio of the TV to be connected. If your
DVD is not encoded to allow you to change the aspect
ratio,TV shape cannot be changed.
4:3 PS (panscan)
Select this if you have a
conventional TV set and your
DVD is not formatted for
widescreen viewing. A wide
picture is displayed on the
whole TV screen with a portion automatically cut off.
4:3 LB (letterbox)
Select this if you have a
conventional TV set and your DVD
is formatted for widescreen
viewing. Wide bands is displayed
on the upper and lower portions
of the TV screen.
16:9 (widescreen)
Select this if you have a
widescreen TV set (you must
also set your widescreen TV
to “full size”.)
TV SYSTEM
Allows you to select the color system that corresponds to
your TV.
AUTO
Select this if the connected TV is multi system. The
output format will be in accordance with the video signal
of the disc.
NTSC
Select this if the connected TV is NTSC system. It will
change the video signal of a PAL disc and output to
NTSC format.
PAL
Select this if the connected TV is PAL system. It will
change the video signal of an NTSC disc and output to
PAL format.
VIDEO OUT
Set the Video Output according to your video connection.
This setting is not required if you are using the VIDEO OUT
jack (yellow) to connect the DVD system to your TV.
PR PBY / SCART
Select this if you have connected the DVD system to
your TV using the Component Video Out
(Pr/Cr Pb/Cb Y) jacks.
(SCART - not available for this version)
S-VIDEO
Select this if you have connected the DVD system to
your TV using S-Video jack.
SCR SAVER (Screen Saver)
OFF
Select this to disable the screen saver function.
ON
Select this if you wish to dim the TV screen when the
disc playback is stopped or paused for more than five
minutes. This will prevent your display device from
becoming damaged.
Sound Setup
DIGITAL OUTPUT
Allows you to specify the type of digital output suitable for
the optional audio equipment that connected through the
DIGITAL OUT at the rear of your DVD system.
ALL
Select this if you have connected the digital output
(COAXIAL or OPTICAL) to a multichannel decoder
receiver.
PCM 96K
Select this if the optional audio equipment is capable of
processing digital signal input with sampling rates of 96 kHz.
PCM 48K
Select this if the optional audio equipment is incapable of
processing 96 kHz digital signal input. The signal will then
be converted to a standard signal with sampling rates of
48 kHz.
OFF
Select this to deactivate the digital output (COAXIAL or
OPTICAL.)

NIGHT MODE
Night function can also be accessed via the remote control.
OFF
Select this when you want to enjoy the surround sound
with its full dynamic range.
ON
Select this to level out the volume. High volume outputs
will be softened and low volume outputs are brought
upward to an audible level. This feature is only available
for movies with Dolby Digital mode.
CENTER DELAY
If the listening position is closer to the center speaker than
the front speakers, you can set the center delay time to
improve the surround sound effect.
Options : 5ms, 3ms, 2ms, 1ms or OFF (default setting.)
REAR DELAY
If the listening position is closer to the rear surround
speakers than the front speakers, you can set the rear delay
time to improve the surround sound effect.
Options : 15ms, 12ms, 9ms, 6ms (default setting,) 3ms
or OFF.
TESTTONE (disc mode only)
OFF
Select this to deactivate the test tone.
ON
Select this to activate the test tone.The test signal is
generated through the left, center, right, and surround
speakers.
Language Setup
AUDIO / SUBTITLE / DISC MENU
Select your preferred language settings for your DVD
(audio language, subtitle language and disc menus) so
that the system will automatically switch to the selected
language whenever you load a DVD. If the language
selected is not available on the disc, the original language
designated by each disc will be selected.
Features Setup
PARENTAL
Enables setting of playback limitation level. Some DVDs may
have a parental level assigned to the complete disc or to
certain scenes on the disc. The rating levels are from 1 to 8
and are country dependent. You can prevent the playing of
certain discs that are not suitable for your children or have
certain discs played with alternative scenes.
1Use the numeric keypad (0-9) to enter ‘1234’ (default
password) when you are asked to enter the four-digit
password. You will have to enter the same code exactly
twice.
2Use 34 keys to select a rating level.
3Press OK to confirm.
Rating explanations
NO PARENTAL – It will play all discs.
8 ADULT – Mature material; should be viewed only by
adults due to graphic sexual material, violence,
or language.
7 NC-17 – No children under age 17; not
recommended viewing for children under
age 17.
6 PG-R – Parental Guidance - Restricted;
recommended that parents restrict children
under 17 from viewing or allow to view only
when supervized by a parent or adult
guardian.
4 PG13 – Material is unsuitable for children under age
13.
3 PG – Parental Guidance suggested.
1 G – General Audience; recommended as
acceptable for viewers of all ages.

Helpful Hints:
–Some DVDs are not encoded with a rating though the
movie rating may be printed on the disc jacket. The rating
level feature does not work for such discs.
–If the player’s parental level is set below 8, only discs with a
lower or equal level will play. For example, if the player is set to
6, only discs with ratings of 6, 4, 3 and 1 will be played.
Higher rated scenes will not be played unless an alternative
that has the same rating or lower is available on the disc. For
example, consider a disc that generally is suitable for most
audiences, and it is rated at level 1 for the most part. However,
in the middle, there are also scenes rated at 6 (not suitable for
children.)
To enable playback of a higher rated disc or scene
than the level set
Go to ‘PARENTAL’ and enter the four-digit code before
resetting the rating level to a higher number.
If you forget the 4-digit code
Press Çfour times when prompted for the password
code and the system will change back to the default
password (1234.)
PASSWORD
To set a new password for the parental control or to
change the password.
CHANGE
If you are asked to enter the code for the first time, key
in ‘1234’ (default password.) Then enter your new four-
digit password code, twice.
MENU LANG (Menu language)
Select the language for on screen display.
DEFAULTS
RESET
Pressing 2on the remote will restore all the items in
the setup menu to the original factory setting except for
your Parental Control password.

IMPORTANT!
–DVD discs and players are designed with
regional restrictions. Before playing a disc, make
sure the disc is for the same zone as your player.
–Depending on the DVD or VIDEO CD, some
operations may be different or restricted.
–Do not push on the disc tray or put any objects
other than discs on the disc tray. Doing so may
cause the disc player to malfunction.
–Do not move the disc player during playback,
as doing so may damage the DVD system.
Playable discs
Your DVD player is able to play :
– Digital Video Discs (DVDs)
– Video CDs (VCDs)
– Super Video CDs (SVCDs)
– Compact Discs (CDs)
– MP3 discs, Picture (Kodak, JPEG) files on CD-R(W).
– ISO 9660 format, UDF format
– Maximum 12 characters display
– Maximum nested directory is 8 levels
– The maximum album number is 32
– The maximum title number is 999
– Supported sampling frequencies for MP3 disc are :
32 kHz, 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz
– Supported Bit-rates : 32~256 (kbps) and variable bit-
rates
– MPEG-1 layer 2 and 3 Audio (MP3)
Region Codes
DVDs must be labeled for ALL regions or for
Region 1 in order to play on this DVD system.
You cannot play discs that are labeled for other
regions.
Helpful Hint:
–If you are having trouble playing a certain disc, remove the
disc and try a different one. Improperly formatted discs will
not play on this DVD system.
Basic playback
1Press SOURCE until “DISC” appears on the display panel
(or DISC on the remote.)
2Press OPEN•CLOSE 0button to open the disc tray and
load a disc, then press OPEN•CLOSE 0again to close
the tray.
➜Make sure the label side is facing up. For double-sided
discs, load the side you want to play face up.
➜There will be a short delay while the player identifies the
disc and reads the menu from the disc.
●Some discs will start playing automatically, and others will
display the Disc Contents Menu on the TV screen. If the
menu is presented, use 3412keys to highlight your
selection and press OK to confirm. To select a play option,
press numeric keypad (0-9.)
3PressÉÅ to start playback.
Helpful Hint:
–If the inhibit icon appears on the TV screen when a
button is pressed, it means the function is not available
on the disc you are playing.
–You are not able to operate the system using

keys on the remote when playing an VCD with PBC mode on.
To interrupt playback
●PressÉÅ.
➜The picture freezes and the sound will mute.
●To resume playback, pressÉÅ again.
To stop playback
●Press Ç.
Skipping to another track/chapter
●Press Sor T repeatedly during playback to skip
backward or forward. Each press will take the disc to the
beginning of the current or next track/chapter.
Helpful Hint:
–If the REPEAT TRACK mode is active, pressing
S

will replay the same track/chapter.
To skip to the beginning of the current track/
chapter during playback

To go directly to any track/chapter
●Use the numeric keypad (0-9) to enter the number of
the desired track/chapter.
Fast Search within a track/chapter

Continue playback from the last stop point
●In stop mode and when a disc has not been removed, press
RESUME on the remote to resume playback from the
point at which it stopped.
To cancel the resume mode
●Press Çagain.
Helpful Hints:
–Open the disc tray or disconnect the system from the
power supply will cancel the resume option.
–ForVCD, the resume option is only possible if the PBC mode
is turned on.
–The resume option may not be available on some discs.
Repeat play
You can only select the repeat play mode during playback.
For DVD - Repeat chapter/title/disc
●Press REPEAT repeatedly to select the following :
➜“R-1” – repeat chapter.
➜“R-A” – repeat title/disc.
For VCD/CD/MP3-CD - Repeat track/disc
●Press REPEAT repeatedly to select the following :
➜“R-1” – repeat the current track.
➜“R-A” – repeat the entire disc.
Helpful Hints:
–Repeat play might not work correctly with some DVDs.
–ForVCD, repeat play is not possible during PBC playback.
Repeat A-B
You can play a specific section in a track/chapter repeatedly.
1Press REPEAT A-B on the remote at your chosen
starting point.
2Press REPEAT A-B again at your chosen end point.
➜The passage will now repeat continuously.
3To resume normal play, press REPEAT A-B again.
Helpful Hint:
–The section A and B can be set only within the same
chapter/track.
Program favorite tracks
You can play the contents of the disc in the order you want
by programming the order of the tracks to be played. Up to
99 tracks can be stored.
Helpful Hint:
–Program DVD and MP3-CD is not possible.
Using the display screen
1While playback is stopped, press PROGRAM to enter
program mode.
➜“P 00::

:00” appears.
2Use the numeric keypad (0-9) to input the track
number in the order you want.
➜"FULL" will appear if 99 tracks have been programmed.
3Press OK to store the track.
●Repeat steps 2-3 to store other tracks.
4To start program play, pressÉÅ.
5To stop playback, press Çonce.
6To cancel the program, press Çagain in stop mode.
Using the menu bar
