INTRODUCTION
Congratulations on the purchase of your new Memorex
CPS
Turbo Universal Remote Control (URC). The
CPS
Turbo learnsthe remote control commandsfor up to eight
audio/video components.
In
today's complex AIV sys-
tems, this eliminates confusion ofwhich remote control to
use and does away with the pile of remote controls on
your end tables or night stand.
This simplifies your life because one URC does the work
of eight remote controls.
But simply replacing existing remote controls is not
enough. Your
CPS
Turbo can be programmed to perform
sequences ofupto
4S
differentcommands
th
at involveup
to eight separate remote controlled components. The
multiple steps usually needed for equipment switching
and mode selection can be presetto operatewith justone
press ofthe sequence numberor even totally unattended
if needed.
With the large, easy-to-read LCD display and real-time
c
lo
ck,the
CPS
Turboprovides the ability
to
easily operate
your
AJV
equipment
at
any time or day you want.
Your
CPS
Turbo also has a special feature ca
ll
ed
SCHEDULING which can automatically activate up to 16
separate sequences and start/stop events. Additionally,
each sequence can be performed daily, weekly, or on a
one-time-only basis.
AFAVORITE CHANNELfeature allows you to enterup
to
32 active or favorite channels into its memoryto allowyou
to scroll only through those preferred channels.
The built-
in
QUICK TIMER RECORDING (QTR) allows
you to enter one-key timed recordings for instant, auto-
matic operation of your video recording equipment.
Non-volatile memory allows the batteries to be changed
without losing any codes, sequences or settings.
Du
aldisplay light provides easy viewing
in
low-light con-
ditions.
For your protection, we urge you to record the serial
number (found on the back of the turbo) in the space
provided.

INSTALLING THE BATTERIES
The
CPS
Turbo uses four AA alkaline batteries. The
CPS
Turbo requires the extra powerof alkalines and might not
perform properlywith standard or rechargeable batteries.
1.Movethe battery compart-
ment cover by pressing it
in the direction of the ar-
row.
2. Install four new AA batter-
ies, observing the polarity
(+and-)
symbols marked
inside the battery com-
partment.
3.
If you are installing batter-
ies for the first time,press
and hold the [CANCEL]
key. Then, use a pen or
pencil to press the [RE-
SET] button inside the
battery compartment. The
re-set feature is atwo step
process to prevent acci-
dental use.
RESET
Caution: Press [CANCEL] and [RESET] only when you
are installing batteries for the first time. Press-
ing [CANCEL] and [RESET] erases all learned
commands
in
the
CPS
Turbo's memory. See
"Troubleshooting."
4. Replace the compartment cover.
Notes:
A set of batteries provides power for up to six months
of normal use. However, to avoid loss of the learned
commandsandcommand sequences,replace the bat-
teries
as
soon as you see the BATTERY LOW symbol
appear on the display.
,-,.,-,,-,
LI·LILI
The
CPS
Turbo retains learned commands and com-
mand sequences in memory for 2 1/2 minutes without
batteries. Be sure you have new batteries ready to
install before you remove the old batteries.
The clock stops running when you remove the batter-
ies. You mustresettheclock each timeyou replace the
batteries.
Never leave weak batteries in the
CPS
Turbo. They
can leak damaging chemicals.
Do not mix old and new batteries. 5

UNDERSTANDING THE CP8TURBO
Before you use the CP8 Turbo, it will help to understand a
little about how it works.
USING
SOME
KEYS
SEVERAL
TIMES
The
CPS
Turbo has 35 programmable keys. You can
teach each command key up to eight different remote
control commands-one command for each of the eight
device indicators (TV,
VCR1
,VCR2,CABLE, RCVR, CD,
TAPE, and AUX) up to the available memory space. Be-
fore you teach or use a command, press the SELECT
[<Ill]
or [
.,..]
to select the desired device.
Each time you press a SELECT key, the next device
indicator appears on the display. After you reach the last
deviceindicator
at
theend ofthedisplay,the displaywraps
to the indicator at the opposite end of the display.
Although some device indicators have specific names
(TV, VCR, TAPE, CABLE, and so on), you can teach
re
-
mote contr
ol
commands for any remote control compo-
nent using any device indicator setting. The display
names are only for reference.
The names on the command keys are also only for refer-
ence. Although it
is
best to use a CP8 Turbo key that has
the same name (or a similar name) as the remote control
key whose command
it
is being taught, you can teach any
remote control command to any
CPS
Turbo key.
Forexample, you can teach the fast-forward command for
your VCR to FF [
........
] on the CP8 Turbo.
Note: The
CPS
Turbo can only learn infrared com-
mands. Old-fashioned, ultrasonic controls are
not compatible with the CP8 Turbo.
SETTING
THE
TIME
After you have installed your batteries, the CP8 Turbo will
automatically enterthe run mode. Atime will appear in the
display (12:00 AM) and the daywill show as MON. TV will
also appear in the upper left hand portion of the display.
The LEARN key and other special function editing keys
are located underneath a sliding door at the base of your
Turbo.

Be
sure
to
have the remote control key held down
in

in
step 2.
Do
step2within asecond of doing step 3. The split second
delay
in
URC learning may enable learning a more
effective part of the remote control code. Try using
different amounts of delay if necessary. 9

C. Change the distance between the remote control and
the URC.
It
may take a different distance
to
effectively
focus the
IR
beam at the URC window, since some
remote controls are very powerful. Increase the dis-
tance until the send/ receiver indicatorno longer lights,
then decrease the distance until the indicator just
comes
on
. This distance may
be
as much as 12
inches.
D.
In
order for the URC
to
operate some devices,
it
may
be
necessary
to
use a different DISTANCE (See C
above)
in
combination with the normal method
in
steps
2 & 3 or
in
combination with either the TAPPING
method or REVERSE method.
E.
With some cable TV devices it may be necessary
to
use the procedure
in
steps 2 & 3
in
the following
manner: With the two remotesatleast48" apart, select
the URC key you wantto teach. We will use "CHN UP"
as
an
example. When CHNUPappears
on
the display.
press the remote control key you want the URC
to
learn. Keep the key held down while steadily moving
the otherremote toward the URC at about2
to
3inches/
second. Alignment aiming
is
very important with this
method.
It
may help
to
use a straight edge for refer-
ence. The URC may indicateSTORED withoutthe red
send/receive indicator being illuminated.
4.Repeat Steps 2 and 3
to
teach the Turbo
more commands from
the same remote con-
trol. Return
to
"Aligning
the Turbo"
to
teach the
URC commands from
a different remote con-
trol.
5.
To
exit the learn mode,
press [CANCEL]. (The
Turbo automatically
exits the learn mode if
you
don'tpress any key
for
60
seconds.)
Notes:
10
To change the command learned by a particular com-
mand key with a particular device indicator setting,
simply repeat the teachi
ng
procedure. The Turbo
erases the old command when it learns the new one.
If
FULL appears
on
the display,the Turbo's memory is
full. When the memory is full, the Turbo stays
in
the
learn mode until you delete some commands or com-
mand sequences. See "Deleting a Command or a
Command Sequence."
Afterteaching the commands
to
theTurbo,remove the
batteries from the old remote controls and store the
remote controls. You might need to reteach the codes
to
the Turbo.

If
the Turbo has difficulty learning a particular key, try
tapping the key during the teaching process.
USING
THE
LEARNED
COMMANDS
Follow this procedure to use the learned commands.
If
you have taught a group of commands to the Turbo, use
this procedure to test each command key.
If
you find a
key that does not have the desired effect, teach the
command again.

USING SEQUENCES
PROGRAMMING A COMMAND SEQUENCE
When you use standard remote controls, it often takes a
sequence of several commands using several remote
controls to accomplish your task. The Turbo allows you
to program these sequences and recall them by pressing
only two keys.
For example, you can program a command sequence to
turn on yourcable box, selectyour favorite cable channel,
turn on your VCR, and begin recording on your VCR. Of
course, you must load a tape into the VCR first.
You can program a command sequence of up to 48 steps
for each of the 35 command keys,
as
long as memory
space
is
available. Use this feature to remember and
send any often used sequences of commands.
Notes:
In
a sequence, you can only use command keys that
you have already taught aremote control command.
If
you deletea command from aTurbo keythat is used
in
a command sequence, the sequence aborts when the
Turbo reaches that key
in
the sequence.

If
you changethe command for akey the Turbo uses
