To download SANtricity® ES Storage Manager and related product documentation, go to the NetApp®
Support Site at support.netapp.com.
This procedure describes how to replace a drive drawer in the 60-drive tray. This kit instruction applies to
the following 60-drive trays:
•E2660 controller-drive tray
•E5460 controller-drive tray
•E5560 controller-drive tray
•DE6600 drive tray
You need these items for this procedure:
•Antistatic protection
•A flashlight (or equivalent)
•A replacement drive drawer
NOTE Drives do not come installed in the replacement drive drawer.

ATTENTION Possible loss of data access – Magnetic fields can destroy all data on the drive and
cause irreparable damage to the drive circuitry. To avoid loss of data access and
damage to the drives, always keep drives away from magnetic devices.

ATTENTION Possible hardware damage – To prevent electrostatic discharge damage to the drive
tray, use proper antistatic protection when handling drive tray components.
Preparing the Drive Drawer for Removal
1Stop the I/O activity to the drive tray.
2Do you have power applied?
■No – Go to “Removing the Drive Drawer.”
Yes – Go to step 3.
3Type this command on the command line, and press Enter:
SMcli <ctlr_IP1> -c ”set tray [trayID] drawer [drawerID]
serviceAllowedIndicator=on;”
In this command:
-<ctlr_IP1> is the identifier of the controller to which the drive tray is assigned.
-[trayID] is the identifier of the drive tray that contains the drive drawer that you want to
replace. Drive tray ID values are 0 to 99. You must enclose the value for the trayID in square
brackets.
-[drawerID] is the identifier of the drive drawer that you want to replace. Drawer ID values are
1 (top drawer) to 5 (bottom drawer). You must enclose the value for the drawerID in square
brackets.
This command turns on the blue Service Action Allowed LED that is located on the drive drawer
and prevents the controller from accessing the drive tray.
ATTENTION Possible damage to drives – Wait 30 seconds after the blue Service Action Allowed
LED comes on before you open the drive drawer. Waiting 30 seconds allows the drives
to spin down, which prevents possible damage to the hardware.

Removing the Drive Drawer
In this procedure, you disconnect the drive drawer cables from the rear of the drive tray, and you remove
the drive drawer from the front of the drive tray.
NOTE The power canister and the fan canister are two separate canisters.
1Put on antistatic protection.
2At the rear of the drive tray, remove the right fan canister (Figure 2) by pressing on the tab holding
the fan canister handle in place, and then pulling the fan canister handle toward you.

NOTE If power is applied, a blue LED highlights the cable chain that you need to disconnect. If
power is not applied, you must manually determine which cable chain of the five cable
chains you must disconnect.
The top cable chain is attached to the drive drawer 1. The bottom cable chain is attached to the drive
drawer 5.

4Disconnect the right cable chain mounting bracket from the midplane. Insert your finger into the
orange circle (Figure 4), and pull the mounting bracket completely out of the drive tray. If necessary,
use a flashlight to see the orange circle.

6Reinstall the right fan canister.
7Remove the left fan canister by pressing on the tab holding the fan canister handle in place, and then
pulling the handle toward you.
8Use the handle to pull the left fan canister out of the drive tray.
9Disconnect the left cable chain mounting bracket from the midplane. Insert your finger into the
orange circle, and pull the mounting bracket completely out of the drive tray.
NOTE If you are performing this procedure with the power turned on, when you disconnect the
last cable chain, all of the LEDs, including the Service Action Allowed LED, go off.
10 Disconnect the left cable chain mounting bracket from the drive drawer. Insert your finger into the
orange circle, and pull the mounting bracket completely out of the drive tray. Remove the left cable
chain.
11 Reinstall the left fan canister.
ATTENTION Possible hardware damage – If you are performing this procedure with the power
turned on, you must reinstall the fan canisters before you remove the drive drawer.
Otherwise, the equipment could overheat.
12 At the front of the drive tray, remove the bezel from the front of the drive tray.
13 Release the levers on each side of the drive drawer by pulling both towards the center (Figure 6).
Figure 6 Levers on the Drive Drawer
14 Carefully pull on the extended levers to pull out the drive drawer until the drive drawer stops. The
drive drawer should not come completely out of the drive tray at this time.
IMPORTANT If the logical unit numbers (LUNs) have already been assigned and created, the
location of the drives in the drive drawer is critical. Record the location of the drives
before removing the drives in the next step.

7
15 Remove all of the drives from the drive drawer. To remove a drive:
aRaise the drive handle to the vertical position (Figure 7).
Figure 7 Raised Drive Handle
bLift the drive from the drive drawer using the handle, and put the drive on a flat, static-free
surface.
16 Slide the drive drawer release lever (Figure 8) on both sides of the drive drawer toward you, and
remove the drive drawer from the chassis.

Installing the Drive Drawer
ATTENTION Risk of equipment damage – Damage occurs if the lock-out tumbler is in the middle
of the drawer guide.
1At the front of the drive tray, install the new drive drawer into the slot, making sure the
lock-out tumbler is located on the top of the drawer guide.
The lock-out tumbler is a small alignment piece that is attached to the frame. Figure 9 shows the
location of the lock-out tumbler as shown from the front of the drive tray.

3Pull the levers on the side of the drive drawer until the drive drawer stops.
IMPORTANT You must add the drives to the same location in the drive drawer that they were in
before the drive drawer was removed.
4Install all of the drives into the drive drawer. To install a drive:
aRaise the handle on the drive to the vertical position.
bAlign the two raised buttons on each side over the matching gap in the drive channel on the
drive drawer (Figure 10).

5Push the drive drawer all the way back into the drive tray, closing the levers on each side of the drive
drawer.
ATTENTION Risk of equipment malfunction – Make sure that you push both levers to each side
so that the drive drawer is completely closed. The drive drawer must be completely
closed to allow proper airflow and prevent overheating.
6Install the bezel on the front of the drive tray.
7At the rear of the drive tray, check to see if the left fan canister is installed. Is the left fan canister
installed?
Yes – Go to step 8.
No – Go to step 9.
8Perform these steps:
aRemove the left fan canister by pressing on the tab holding the handle in place, and then pulling
the handle toward you.
bUse the handle to pull the left fan canister out of the drive tray.
cGo to step 9.
9Connect the left cable chain mounting bracket to the drive drawer.
10 Connect the left cable chain mounting bracket to the midplane. Use a flashlight, if necessary, so that
you can see the connector on the mounting bracket connect to the midplane connector.
11 Reinstall the left fan canister.
12 Remove the right fan canister by pressing on the tab holding the handle in place, and then pulling the
handle toward you.
13 Use the handle to pull the right fan canister out of the drive tray.
14 Connect the right cable chain mounting bracket to the drive drawer.
15 Connect the right cable chain mounting bracket to the midplane. Use a flashlight, if necessary, so that
you can see the connector on the mounting bracket connect to the midplane connector.
16 Reinstall the right fan canister.
17 Remove the antistatic protection.
18 Do you have power applied?
Yes – The drives will automatically spin up and, if necessary, start to rebuild the volumes.
