`^rqflk
Risk of damage through unauthorized service
The JUPITER magnetic compass is not serviceable in the field.
Defective units must be returned to Sperry Marine for exchange.
kçíÉ
For details of returning a defective compass
see “Compass Return Information” on page 5-2.
kçíÉ
All service work is restricted to authorized service personnel only.
The operator is not allowed to undertake drain-off and refill procedures
of the compass liquid.
kçíÉ
The exchange of an installed JUPITER magnetic compass against a
JUPITER spare magnetic compass is the only maintenance work allowed
for the operator.
The operator is not allowed to undertake drain-off and refill procedures
of the compass liquid.
`^rqflk
Risk of harming classification requirements
The JUPITER magnetic compass is completely equipped with its belong-
ing gimbal ring.
Following classification requirements, compass, gimbal ring and com-
pass card show the same serial no. and must only be operated as an
entity. It is not allowed to operate equipment with different serial no.
`^rqflk
Risk of damage through wrong storage
The UPSIDE DOWN storage position of the JUPITER magnetic compass
in its transport box (storage case) must be kept for damage free storage.
Never place the transport box with the magnetic compass onto its cover
plate, as this will reverse the recommended storage position and damage
the magnetic compass.

The JUPITER is a flat glass “class A” magnetic compass for large
vessels with a card diameter of 180 mm.
The JUPITER has been type approved by Germanischer Lloyd (GL),
in accordance with the Marine Equipment Directive (MED) 6/ 8/EC, as
amended, as magnetic compass class A (certificate no. 4 442-10 HH).
The JUPITER T complies with the following specified standards as
magnetic compass:
IMO resolutions A.382 (X), A.6 4 (17),
ISO 106 (1 73), 25862 (200 ),
IEC 60 45 (2002)+ Corr.1.
The Jupiter has also been type approved by the Russian River Register
(RRR) for the purpose of measurement of magnetic course as well as
determination of magnetic bearings and course angles and has been
assigned certificate 06-05-17 4.
Further type approvals for many other countries are available upon
request.
The JUPITER magnetic compass is available in different types as bear-
ing compass, steering compass, reflector compass and overhead com-
pass and may be installed in all Sperry Marine NAVIPOL binnacles.

The JUPITER magnetic compass displays the magnetic direction and
provides heading information for the maritime navigation of vessels.
Only appropriately trained and educated personnel, familiar with all
mandatory safety and operating procedures, is allowed to operate it.
The direction can be read from the lubber line and floating compass
card.
With his fluxgate (sine/cosine) interface, the JUPITER magnetic compass
also provides direction data which can be addressed via the TMC func-
tion (Transmitting Magnetic Compass) to a Heading Management Sys-
tem (HMS).
kçí=fåíÉåÇÉÇ=rëÉ
Although the JUPITER is a highly accurate magnetic compass for pro-
viding heading information, the operator must not rely on it solely as
the only heading information source. The plausibility of the JUPITER
heading information must always be confirmed against all other availa-
ble aids to navigation.

2-2 Exchange of Compass
mêçÅÉÇìêÉ
1. Loosen the lock-nuts (16) and remove the trunnion journals (17, 21)
by turning counterclockwise with a screwdriver.
2. Remove the JUPITER magnetic compass.
3. Install JUPITER spare magnetic compass.
4. Screw in the trunnion journals (17, 21) into the gimbal ring (13) so
that no play exists between compass and gimbal ring and secure
with lock-nuts (16).
5. Use the storage box of the JUPITER spare magnetic compass to pack
and return the exchanged compass to Sperry Marine, see “Compass
Return Information” on page 5-2 for details.
kçíÉ
Trunnion journals for bearing the gimbal ring are to be removed carefully
with a pair of pliers.

On delivery, the JUPITER magnetic compass and a JUPITER spare
magnetic compass come in a wooden transport box (storage case)
protecting the compass against damage during transport or storage.
Inside the transport box, the JUPITER magnetic compass is positioned
upside down for damage free storage. It is mandatory to never place the
transport box with the magnetic compass onto its cover plate as this will
reverse the recommended storage position and damage the magnetic
compass, especially during long-lasting storage of a spare magnetic
compass.
