Scanning t e avalanc e track for
transmitters and locating eac
signal quickly and exactly are the
decisive advantages f the ORTOVOX
avalanche transceiver S1. An imme-
diate search with an avalanche
transceiver and a rescue using ava-
lanche sh vels and a pr be that is
carried ut by the t ur participants
themselves ffers the best chance
f survival f r an avalanche victim.
When third party help has t be cal-
led t the scene it usually arrives t
late! Pay attenti n t the avalanche
rep rt and select safe r utes.
Always take the avalanche trans-
ceiver S1 with y u t gether with
the necessary ORTOVOX SAFETY
PRODUCTS such as an avalanche
sh vel and a pr be. Read the S1
perating instructi ns carefully and
practice b th the handling f y ur

SIGNAL SEARCH:
Turn the S1 left and right thr ugh an angle f appr x. 30°
during the SIGNAL SEARCH (= search f r the first signal)
and tilt it m derately up and d wn. This c mpensates f r
particularly unfav urable p siti ns f the transmitting
antenna and the signal can be picked up even earlier. If
there is n transmissi n signal being received then the
screen will aut matically display instructi ns t carry ut
a signal search. Search the avalanche track in search
strips f 50 m !
COARSE SEARCH:
Hold the S1 in a horizontal (flat) position during the
search!
At appr ximately 60 m distance fr m the victim the
victim symb l will appear n the display screen (7) with
the digital measurement (i.e 55).
The searcher aims the vertical line t the middle f the
victim symb l and then m ves t wards the victim. The
ac ustic signal fr m the l udspeaker will s und faster
as the distance reduces and thus c nfirm
the measurement result.
If the S1 again has t determine the initial
signal, the instructi n t piv t the S1 appe-
ars n the display.
The distance t the victim is n w 20 m. Tw further vic-
tims are sh wn at distances f 25 m and 30 m by a
small ic n. The nearest victim (large ic n) at a distance
f ab ut 20 m remains targeted. When there are seve-
ral pe ple searching, each f the signals displayed can
be targeted and simultane usly l cated by the ther
searchers.

Hold the S1 steady in front of you. Do not turn the S1
during fine search!
The searcher is appr aching the victim: the distance is

The searcher is m ving away fr m the victim.

If a sec nd (third) victim is within a 3 m radius, the signal first f und
cann t be cancelled. In this case the fine search f ther victims
c ntinues in a c nsecutive manner as circle ic ns appear giving their
specific respective distances, sh uld the situati n arise.

indicat r appears and y u can determine the exact p siti n as usual
by using the grid search.
Marking a transmitter at a depth f m re than appr x. 6 – 7 m is n t
p ssible - in this case the victim's p siti n is f und by determining the

DAILY FUNCTION TEST BEFORE STARTING A TOUR!
C ecking t e receivers:
• All participants set their S1 t ‘RECEIVE’.
• A gr up member (preferably the gr up leader) sets his/her S1
t ‘TRANSMIT’.
• If all gr up members have ac ustic and ptical recepti n then
the gr up members’ receivers are w rking, as is the transmitter f
the gr up leader.
• The gr up leader n w m ves away fr m the gr up until n gr up
member is still receiving a signal.
• The gr up members see the increase in distance f the gr up
leader n their displays and can thus test the recepti n range
f their S1.
C ecking t e transmitters:
• The gr up leader pens his S1 (=recepti n p siti n). The gr up
members cl se their S1 (transmissi n p siti n) and pass the gr up
leader's receiver ONE BY ONE at a distance f 20 m.
At the same time, the fine search is tested appr aching under 3 m !

The t lerance f the sl pe sens rs at 30° (degrees)
can be up t +-5°. The determined measurement can
be kept by pressing the "OK" butt n (2). A new measu-

QUICK TEST
with limited range
(test f the transmitters)
The gr up leader sets his/her S1
t “transmit test” via menu item
(= limited range).
If the S1 receives an audible (via the l udspeaker) and
visible signal (circle with 2 pers ns) fr m each individual
avalanche transceiver then the transmissi n functi n f
the units t be tested and the recepti n functi n f the
gr up leader are in rder.

The S1 separates the signals aut matically.
Once the fine search f the first victim is finished, this
signal can be marked by pressing the “OK-butt n” (2).
Instead f the victim symb l, a flag n w appears where
the victim is buried. At the same time the symb l f r the
next nearest victim is enlarged.
This marking can be cancelled by pressing the "OK" butt n (2) t check
the fine search again if necessary. (This is n t p ssible if several vic-
tims are transmitting within a 3 m radius.)
It is necessary t have a sh rt pause between the signals. It may take
slightly l nger t be able t separate three r m re signals due t
signal verlap. The receiver needs adequate time t differentiate bet-
ween each additi nal transmitted signal. Thus it is practically imp ssi-
ble t separate m re than 3-4 signals within a reas nable time
and t sh w them n the display. The S1 theref re aut matically redu-
ces its range until the number f signals has been reduced t a quan-
tity that can be displayed in a reas nable time.
MPORTANT NOTES REGARD NG S GNAL SEPARAT ON:
Thank you for purchasing the Ortovox S1 employing the most innovative
technology amongst our avalanche beacons. You will find its unique visual
representation and the advanced signal separation technology very helpful
while searching for one or even more buried persons. Nonetheless, we
want to draw your attention to some important aspects of search, espe-
cially in multiple-burial scenarios, and their physical background:
In real avalanche accidents, frequently two or more persons are buried
with their beacons transmitting at the same time. Sometimes, and unpre-
dictably, two or even more beacons are transmitting their impulses exact-

ly simultaneously for a longer period of time. The transmitted signals of two
analog beacons with long pulse durations or digital beacons transmitting
simultaneously overlap and mix up. Frequently they can no longer be sepa-
rated for physical reasons. In such an overlap state, a single transmitter's
signal cannot be measured, neither using analog nor digital technology.
Unfortunately, such an overlap state can continue for 30 or more seconds
in some cases. It is necessary to wait until two overlapping impulses are
drifting apart. Using the Ortovox S1, you can solve this physically determin-
ed problem applying the following three search strategies:
1. Switch to the 4+-Mode and use micro search stripes with
a width of at most 5 m or 16 ft (cf. p.54)
2. Use the Ortovox sector search strategy (cf. p.55).
You can combine this strategy with the 4+-mode.
3. Switch to the acoustic search mode (cf. p.56)
dvice: If the number of buried persons is not known or unsure, for safety
reasons it is required to use one of the before mentioned methods to
detect and locate potential further buried persons.
