Supplementary Instructions
This manual contains supplementary instructions regarding the use of the computer.
It explains the cases where the operation of the computer differs from that in the Operating Instructions.
This model is equipped with a CD-R/RW drive and Easy CD Creator™ 4/DirectCD™ 3 CD-ROM. Also featured is a slot for
accommodating a smart card: this feature makes it possible to use the security functions that, for instance, prohibit the unauthorized
use of the computer by anyone who does not have a smart card. (A smart card and software (application software, driver, addi-
tional Microsoft modules, etc.) need to be purchased separately for this.)
Using a smart card
Do not bend the card or force it into the slot.
Do not touch the contact area or press down on it forcefully. Otherwise, the card may no longer work properly.
For other details on how to handle the card, refer to the instructions that accompany the card.
When using a smart card, do not select [Refresh] in [Device Manager] of [Control Panel]-[System]. Doing so will make the
smart card unusable. If you should happen to select [Refresh], the smart card can be used again by entering standby or
hibernation mode and then resuming operation, or alternatively, by restarting the computer.

Installing the smart card
1Press the smart card eject button and confirm that the button is not sticking out.
2Align the smart card so that the location of the contact is as shown in the figure
on the right, and then insert the card all the way into the slot.

Removing the smart card
Press the smart card eject button, and pull out the card.
Remove the smart card only with the eject button. If you pull the smart card
without using the eject button, it may cause damage to the reader contact.
Confirm that [Smart Card] is set to [Auto] or [Enable] in [Advanced] menu of
Setup Utility.

Using the CD-R/RW drive
Refer to the Reference Manual “Multimedia Pocket” included with your computer.
When writing to CD-R/RW discs
When using CD-R or CD-RW discs, read the descriptions on the disc packages.
CD-RW discs cannot be read with other drives*unable to accommodate CD-RW discs.
*Consult with the manufacturer of each drive.
Using the CD-ROM of the CD-R/RW writer software (included), install the application software on your computer.

Be sure to use discs conforming to the proper write speeds.
If the write operation is to involve a long period of time, be sure to connect the AC adaptor. If the battery power runs low and
the power of the computer is cut, the write operation may end in failure.
Depending on the disc, the quality of the write operation may not be so good. We recommend using any of the following discs.

“Easy CD CreatorTM 4”(hereafter, Easy CD Creator) and “DirectCDTM 3”(hereafter, DirectCD) are CD writing software appli-
cations developed by Adaptec, Inc.
Here, explanations are given on general information about Easy CD Creator and DirectCD, the installation procedure, and how
to access the online manual. Refer to the online manual concerning the detailed use of the software applications.

General Information
What you can do with these software applications
<Easy CD Creator>
Creation of music CDs
Creation of data CDs (CD-ROMs)
(You cannot write data directly from a word processing or other such application. To do this, use DirectCD.)
<DirectCD>
Creation of data CDs (writing files to CD-R and CD-RW discs like writing to floppy disks, etc.)
(You cannot create music CDs. To do this, use Easy CD Creator.)
Applicable CD Media
CD-R (CD-Recordable: one-time writable CD media)
Once data is written, it cannot be changed.
CD-RW (CD-ReWritable: rewritable CD media)
Written data can be deleted and new information can be added.
Close all other software application before running the Setup program for Easy CD Creator/DirectCD for added safety.
Depending on the computer, preparatory steps may be necessary before installation. Before installing the applications, be
sure to read the Operating Instructions or Reference Manual of the computer or CD-R/RW drive.
Installing Easy CD Creator/DirectCD
(First time only)
Easy CD Creator and DirectCD are not pre-installed in the computer. To install the software applications, follow the procedure
below.
If you accidentally delete Easy CD Creator and/or DirectCD, or if you use the product recovery CD-ROMs and completely
return the computer to factory condition, follow the procedure below to re-install the software applications.
1Set the Easy CD Creator CD-ROM in the CD-R/RW drive.
This screen will appear automatically.
<When the screen on the right is not automatically displayed>
In [Start] - [Run], input [x:\SETUP] and select [OK].
(“x” is the drive letter. You can change the letter to suit your preference.)
2Select your language in [Language], then select [Easy CD Creator] or [DirectCD].
Follow the on-screen instructions.
When the installation completes, remove the CD-ROM from the drive and then perform any of the following if necessary.
<To delete the “Create CD” icon on the desktop>
Right-click the “Create CD” icon on the desktop, select [Delete], then select [Yes].
<To delete the “Create CD” icon on the taskbar>
Right-click the “Create CD” icon on the taskbar, select [Disable Create CD], then select [Yes].
< Eliminating the DirectCD Startup Banner>
Right-click the “DirectCD” icon on the taskbar and select [Properties].
Delete the check mark for [Display Adaptec DirectCD startup banner] and select [OK].

With the above procedure, the online manual might not be displayed. In such cases, restart the computer, open Acrobat
Reader and then select the file below from [File] - [Open].

How to access the Online Manual
To read the online manual, Acrobat®Reader must be installed.
<Easy CD Creator>
Select [Start] - [Programs] - [Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4] - [Quick Reference Guide].
<DirectCD>
Select [Start] - [Programs] - [Adaptec DirectCD] - [Reference Guide].
Running Easy CD Creator/DirectCD
Refer to the online manual ( described above) for information on the operation and use of each function.
Cautions on Use
When the “CreateCD” icon is displayed on the taskbar, the [Auto Disconnect] screen of Dial Up may not be displayed
and the computer will continue to be connected when Internet Explorer is closed. In such cases, double-click the Dial Up
icon on the taskbar and disconnect the line.
When a new CD-R disc is inserted, the Easy CD Creator/DirectCD wizard is typically displayed. If there is no display, try setting
the CD-R disc again. If there is still no display, open Easy CD Creator and DirectCD separately from the start menu.
When reading the data of a CD-RW disc formatted with DirectCD on another computer, a screen to install the Adaptec
UDF Reader will be displayed. For the installation, Windows 95/Windows NT (as the OS) will be displayed on the screen,
but the application can also be installed on Windows 98 and Windows 2000.

If Easy CD Creator or DirectCD does not operate properly, we recommend carefully reading the Quick Reference Guide and
online help file first for problems with the operating environment or operations.
If you still cannot troubleshoot the problem, contact Panasonic Technical Support.
About Copies
When writing to CD-R/RW, make sure that you are not infringing any copyrights.
It is illegal to copy audio CDs for non-personal use.
When backing up software, make sure that you are not infringing any software copyrights for that product.
