Safety Symbols

PITE 3921 Battery Monitoring System
4
Description of symbols used in this manual.
WARNING Indicates correct operation to prevent a significant hazard that
could result in serious injury or other bad consequences to
users or the product.
NOTE Indicates advisory items related to performance or correct
operation of the instrument.
1.3 Operating Precautions
WARNING:
The electrical voltage and current used in battery testing is potentially lethal.
Ensure that any battery under test is disconnected before attempting any cleaning or maintenance of
PITE 3921.
Connection and disconnection procedures are extremely important. Be sure to follow the instructions
faithfully.
Do not touch conducting parts of the testing lead when they are connected to PITE 3921 and battery
system.
Explosion risk when using PITE 3921 (all models)
When a lead acid battery is charged or discharged i.e. when there is a current flow through the
battery it is always a risk that the battery can explode.
For new open (vented) batteries the risk is medium to low but in old VRLA (sealed) batteries the risk
is medium to high.
If there is a bad connection inside the battery and there is a current flow - the connection will burn off
and there will be an arc, which will ignite the oxyhydrogen gas in the battery.
If you see any spark from batteries, testing cables or PITE 3921 main body, please switch off the unit
and disconnect all cables for further inspection.
Except as explained in this manual, do not attempt to service this equipment yourself.
Before use, check to see if the nominal voltage ranges on the PITE 3921 matches the batteries that
you are going to monitor. Do not apply PITE 3921 of lower voltage in higher voltage. For example, if
PITE 3921 nominal voltage is 48V, do not connect the unit with batteries of 220V. Otherwise, some
parts inside PITE 3921 main body may get damaged.
Do not operate the PITE 3921 around explosive gas or vapor.
Use only insulated measurement leads supplied with the monitor.
Before use, please inspect the control unit, data logger and other accessories for mechanical
damage and replace them once they are damaged. Pay special attention to the insulation
surrounding the connectors.
Remove all clamps, test leads and accessories that are not in use.
2. OVERVIEW
2.1 About PITE 3921
PITE 3921 is a series of state-of-art Battery Monitoring Systems that adopts advanced multi-frequency
measurement technology and it has different way for communication. This patented and field proven
system is able to monitor battery voltage, internal resistance, current, temperature and thus estimate the
battery state of charge (SOC) and/or state of health (SOH). It is essential for critical UPS system and
protection application.
2.2 Features
Continuous 24/7 on-line monitoring for battery system integrity assurance
Adopts multi-frequency measurement technology for battery measurement, more accurate and
reliable.
Unique communication technology of carrier wave (optional between control unit and DAC). It greatly
simplifies the wire connection and makes it much easier to use.
All systems consist of only 3 main parts: Data Acquisition Case (DAC), control unit and Client

software installed in sever or simply a tablet/smart phone.
Modular design makes it very simple to install onsite and easily expandable to add more battery
systems.
Each DAC connects with 4 batteries with easy wire connection, very economical to use
Advanced data processing technology, accurately analyze the battery state of charge (SOC) and
state of health (SOH).
Control unit has different ways of communication like RS485, wifi and Ethernet. You could optionally
transfer data to smart phone onsite or internet remotely.
Complete data monitoring for voltage, current, resistance, temperature with early warning for weak
batteries. Effectively shorten the time for battery routine discharge to know real battery capacity.
This system is compatible with PITE’s series battery monitor during battery discharge. Complete
solutions for battery system to ensure its performance.
Very competitive price against its peers. Now, it is very economical to add this significant “safeguard”
to your critical system.

3.1 Wire Connection
3.1.1 DAC Connection
Each DAC has two serial ports, one male and the other female as picture below. They are respectively
connected with two connectors, one for power supply and one for measurement of each battery.
Fig 3.1.1.1

PITE 3921 Battery Monitoring System
6
Fig 3.1.1.2 Connector for power supply Fig 3.1.1.3 Connector for measurement
Each DAC is connected with 4 cells. They are programmed to monitor one of these battery types: 1.2V,
2V and 12V. That is to say, if it is programmed to measure 2V cells, it could not be used to measure 12V
cells, and vice versa. Below is the detailed wire connection of the DAC with batteries.
DAC connection with battery string:
Fig 3.1.1.4
Wire connection of the last DAC in string:
When the remaining battery amount is less than 4, the wire connection of the last DAC will be a little
different. There will be different way of connection depending on how many cells are left.

Fig 3.1.1.5
NOTE:
1) For power supply of DAC, it is designed to fit different type of batteries that are under
measurement. If the monitored batteries are of 2V, the power supply is 8V (4 cells). If the cell type
is 12V, the power supply is 48V (4 cells). To avoid damage of DAC due to over voltage, please
connect them properly with the battery string.
2) For security reason in the initial installation, please firstly connect the DAC leads with DAC before
connecting the lads with battery string.
3.1.2 Control Unit Connection
The control unit is composed of two parts: control unit main body and measurement lead as the pictures
below.

PITE 3921 Battery Monitoring System
8
Fig 3.1.2.1 Measurement Lead Fig 3.1.2.2 Control Unit
Connection of Control unit with Battery String:
1) Power supply
Control unit is powered by batteries via the two measurement leads. The red measurement lead is
connected with connected with positive post of the battery string, while the black lead is connected
with negative of string.
NOTE:
Both low volt and high volt power supply will not make it work. There is high voltage protection model
built in the case. For different battery string, the measurement lead has different tolerance of voltage.
It is generally 20% higher than string nominal voltage. For example, if string voltage is 48V, tolerance
voltage is around 57.6V.
For security reason, please do not attempt to connect voltage testing lead with strings that are higher
than this level.
2) Voltage Measurement
The measurement leads has two functions, power supply and string voltage measurement. After the
above wire connection, the control unit will collect measurement result of voltage from battery string.
3) Current testing
Current sensor is customer-tailored to fit different battery systems. It could be connected with any
battery connecting strap/bar between cells. If size of connecting bars are too big to connect current
sensor, you could connect it with outlet or inlet busbar of the battery string like the picture below:

3.1.3 Installation of Router
Router is used for data transmission from the control unit to the server.
In this user manual, we use PC that has wireless LAN as demo. This PC will play the role like a server.
Position of router is as the system diagram below.
Fig 3.1.3.1 System diagram
All control unit of PITE 3921 has been set as working mode of “Client”. The defaulted SSID number is
“plukeserver” while the password is 12345678.
In this illustration, we are using a wireless mini router like the picture below as example.
Fig 3.1.3.1 Wireless router
For installation of router, please do as these steps:
1) After the control unit is well connected with the battery system, please turn on the On/Off switch.
2) Connect the router with power supply.
3) Turn on the wireless network of you PC and select your router wireless connection.
4) Config the router as and set its working mode as “AP” and change its SSID name “plukeserver”
which is same as that of control unit.
5) The wireless selection will be changed to “plukeserver” once the above setting is done. And
configuration of router is finished.
