Introduction
Congratulations. You have purchased a preamplifier that is the culmination of 25 years of
audio research experience. David Belles has designed the Soloist 3 toperformat a level that
exceeds units costing many times its price.
The Soloist 3 has been designed to be a reliable part of your precision sound system,
assuming it is handled and installed properly. We have provided these operating instruc-
tions for you, which, if followed, will insure you years of listening enjoyment.
Care
The most important thing you can do for your preamplifier is clean it properly. There may be
occasions when dust or dirt my build up on your unit. Polishes, cleaners, solvent or any
ammonia based cleaners will damage the aluminum anodize finish of your unit. Use a
clean cloth and wipe the dirt from the unit. Use greater pressure to clean more persistent
dirt. With proper care, the appearance of the Soloist 3 will be preserved for years.
Purpose
The purpose of this instruction manual is to provide guidance to:
• unpack the unit
• install the unit
• operate the unit
• care and maintain the unit
Unpacking the Unit
When you receive your unit, carefully inspect the carton for any damage. Any obvious dents
or scuff marks should alert you to the possibility of damage to the contents. If any external
damage to the carton is found, note the location in relation to the orientation of the pream-
plifier as it is removed from the carton.
Open the top flaps of the carton and carefully remove the unit, lifting it straight out of the
carton. Inspect the unit for damage, paying particular attention to those areas that corre-
spond to any damaged areas on the outer carton.
If your unit was damaged (1) Contact your dealer if the unit was purchased locally. (2)
Contact your common carrier (eg- UPS) if your unit was shipped to you. Do not send the
unit back to the shipper until instructed to do so by the carrier. To do so may void any dam-
age claim you may have.
Do not discard your packing materials or cartons. Should it be necessary to return the unit,
it must arrive undamaged. Using the original packing materials will ensure your unit arrives
safely. Sending your unit back in improper packing could lead to the unit being damaged,
with no possibility of a successful claim against the carrier

Operating the Unit
To operate the Soloist 3 preamplifier, a familiarity with the units controls and inputs and out-
puts is necessary. The following sections provide locations and descriptions of the Soloist 3
front panel controls, rear panel input/output jacks, and remote control button functions.
Front Panel Controls
The Soloist 3 front panel controls include:
•Input Indicator Lights: the Remote Control is used to select the appropriate
source input to listen to and record. The front panel light will indicate what source is
selected.
•Balance Control: used to control the sound balance between the left and right
channel.
•Volume Control: used to control the volume of the audio signal. This control can be
changed using the Remote Control unit.
Remote Control
The Soloist 3 remote control includes:
• (1) Power Button: used to enable and disable power to the remote control logic
circuitry. The preamplifier can be operated with the logic circuitry disabled.
• (2) Mute Button: used to mute the audio signal to the power amplifier.
• (3) Volume Up and Down Buttons: used to control the motorized volume pot of the
Soloist 3 preamplifier.
• (4) Input Button: used to step sequentially through the preamplifier inputs.
• (5) Mon Button: used to step sequentially through the preamplifier monitor func
tions. The functions are: Monitor On, Home Theater Bypass On, and Normal (other

Home Theater Bypass
The Home Theater Bypass feature of the Soloist 3 Stereo Preamplifier allows the unit to
play direct 2-channel music or to be bypassed in a multi-channel home theater system.
The standard method to use this feature is to connect the Soloist 3 to the power amp and
music sources such as CD player, tuner, etc. The audio output of the home theater proces-
sor is then connected to the video inputs of the Soloist 3.
When the HT Bypass indicator (Front Panel of Soloist 3) is on, the video inputs are con-
nected directly to the unbalanced Main Outputs, bypassing the Soloist 3.
