Install Manual

Introduction
Congratulations. You have purchased a unit that is the culmination of 35 years of audio
research experience. David Belles has designed the Soloist Phono Line Stage to perform
at a level that exceeds units costing many times its price.
The Soloist Phono Line Stage has been designed to be a reliable part of your precision
sound system, assuming it is handled and installed properly. We have provided these oper-
ating instructions for you, which, if followed, will insure you years of listening enjoyment.
Care
The most important thing you can do for your unit is clean it properly. There may be occa-
sions when dust or dirt my build up on your unit. Polishes, cleaners, solvent or any ammo-
nia based cleaners will damage the aluminum anodize finish of your unit. Use a clean
cloth and wipe the dirt from the unit. Use greater pressure to clean more persistent dirt.
With proper care, the appearance of the Belles Soloist 1 will be preserved for years.
Purpose
The purpose of this instruction manual is to provide guidance to:
• unpack the unit
• install the unit
• operate the unit
• care and maintain the unit
Unpacking the Unit
When you receive your unit, carefully inspect the carton for any damage. Any obvious
dents or scuff marks should alert you to the possibility of damage to the contents. If any
external damage to the carton is found, note the location in relation to the orientation of the
unit as it is removed from the carton.
Open the top flaps of the carton and carefully remove the unit, lifting it straight out of the
carton. Inspect the unit for damage, paying particular attention to those areas that corre-
spond to any damaged areas on the outer carton.
If your unit was damaged (1) Contact your dealer if the unit was purchased locally. (2)
Contact your common carrier (eg- UPS) if your unit was shipped to you. Do not send the
unit back to the shipper until instructed to do so by the carrier. To do so may void any dam-
age claim you may have.
Do not discard your packing materials or cartons. Should it be necessary to return the unit,
it must arrive undamaged. Using the original packing materials will ensure your unit arrives
safely. Sending your unit back in improper packing could lead to the unit being damaged,
with no possibility of a successful claim against the carrier

Operation and Use
The Belles Soloist Phono Stage has the following features and controls:
•Power Switch: The Soloist Phono is equipped with a power switch. Its use is optio-
nial, because of the units low power drain it may be left on at all times.
CAUTION: Never allow the Soloist Phono to be turned on or off when the power and pre-
amplifier are active. This is to prevent a transient discharge from it to reach the power
amplifier and thus damage the speakers. Also, in most cases a preamplifier muting will be
sufficient.
•MC (Moving Coil) and MM (Moving Magnet) Cartridge Selector Switch: It allows
selection between turntables equipped with either type of phonograph cartridge
connected to the Soloist Phono. The Soloist Phono allows for both types to be con-
nected at the same time but plays only the one selected.
•MC (Moving Coil) Inputs: The MC stereo inputs are can be used with cartridges
with an output range of 0.2 millivolts to 1.0 millivolts.
•MC (Moving Coil) Loading: The Soloist Phono allows the user to load the MC car-
tridge using RCA plugs . The unit comes with two sets of RCA plugs (50 and 100
ohms) with resistors soldered inside the plugs. These values were selected to
accommodate most situations. By using no plugs the input loading is 1000 ohms.
•MM (Moving Magnet) Inputs: The MM stereo inputs can be used with cartridges
with 1.0 millivolts or greater output and require 47,000 ohms.
•Stereo Outputs: The output of the Soloist Phono is at line level and can be operat-
ed with any stereo component's input that accepts line level signals.
