Powered Subwoofers

Proficient’s S12, S10 and S8 Powered Subwoofers provide accurate bass to any audio system, and are designed to work in conjunction with your other
audio components. The S12 / S10 / S8 can be connected to any surround sound receiver that has a subwoofer output, any receiver that has a built-in
preamplifier to the speaker level outputs of any reciever.
INTRODUCTION
For optimal performance, the S12 / S10 / S8 should be placed in a corner along the same wall as the front speakers. The units are not shielded, so do
not place them too close to video devices. When choosing a place for the S12 / S10 / S8, please keep the following in mind:

•PlacetheS12/S10/S8inanypositionotherthanhorizontalwiththefeetdown.Neverplaceonitssideorrestingonthebackwheretheterminalsarelocated.
•PlacetheS12/S10/S8nearheatsourcesorinanareathatitwouldbeexposedtomoisture.

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
• Explanation of Graphical Symbols
1. Read Instructions: All the safety and operating instructions should be read
before the appliance is operated.
2. Retain Instructions: The safety and operating instructions should be retained for
future reference.

7. Wall or Ceiling Mounting: The appliance should be mounted to a wall or ceiling
only as recommended by the manufacturer.
8. Ventilation: The appliance should be situated so that its location or position does
notinterferewithitsproperventilation.Forexample,theapplianceshouldnotbesit-
uated on a bed, sofa, rug, or similar surface that may block the ventilation openings;
or placed in a built-in installation, such as a bookcase or cabinet that may impede
theowofairthroughtheventilationopenings.
9. Heat: The appliance should be situated away from heat sources such as radiators,
stoves, or other appliances that produce heat.
10. Power Source: The appliance should be connected to a power supply only of
the type described in the operating instructions or as marked on the appliance.
11. Power-Cord Protection: Power-supply cords should be routed so that they are
not likely to be walked on or pinched by items placed upon or against them,
paying particular attention to cords at plugs, convenience receptacles, and the
pointwheretheyexitfromtheappliance.
12. Cleaning: The appliance should be cleaned only as recommended by the
manufacturer.
13. Nonuse Periods: The power cord of the appliance should be unplugged from
the outlet when left unused for a long period of time.
14. Object and Liquid Entry: Care should be taken so that objects do not fall into
and liquids not spilled into the inside of the appliance.
15. Damage Requiring Service: The appliance should be serviced by qualified ser-
vice personnel when:
a. The power-supply cord or the plug has been damaged; or
b.Objectshavefallenonto,orliquidhasbeenspilledintotheappliance;or
c. Theappliancehasbeenexposedtorain;or
d.Theappliancedoesnotappeartooperatenormallyorexhibitsamarked
change in performance; or
e. The appliance has been dropped, or the cabinet damaged.
16. Servicing: The user should not attempt to service the appliance beyond those
means described in the operating instructions. All other servicing should be
referred to qualified service personnel.
17. Grounding or Polarization: The precautions that should be taken so that the
groundingorpolarizationmeansofanapplianceisnotdefeated.
Thelightningashwitharrowheadsymbol,within
an equilateral triangle, is intended to alert you to
the presence of uninsulated “dangerous voltage”
within the product’s enclosure that may be of
sufficient magnitude to constitute a risk of electric
shock to persons.
Theexclamationpointwithinanequilateraltri-
angle is intended to alert you to the presence of
important operating and maintenance (servicing)
instructions in the literature accompanying the
appliance.

Voltage Selector (See Figure 1)
ForuseintheU.S.,theS12/S10/S8comespresetfromthefactoryat115V.Foruseinother
countries,thevoltagemaybesetat230V.(Pleasenotethatanoutletadapteroralternatepower
cord may be required.)
Connecting the Line Level Audio Inputs (See Figure 2)
Ifyoursurroundsoundreceiveroramplierhasonlyonesubwooferoutput,simplyplugitintothe
LeftLineInput.Ifyourreceiveroramplierhasabuilt-inpreamplier,theleftandrightpre-outputs
canbeconnectedtotheLeftandRightLineInputs.CAUTION:Onlymakeconnectionswhenthe
S12 / S10 / S8 is turned off.
Connecting the Speaker Wires (See Figure 2)
FollowtheseinstructionswhenusingtheSpeakerLevelOutputsofyourreceiveroramplierto
connect to the S12 / S10 / S8.
Forbestresults,usespeakerwirethatisatleast18gauge.Forrunslongerthan75feet,14gauge
wire is recommended.
Wirelargerthan14gaugeisnotrecommendedbecauseitmaynottintotheconnector.Forbest
results, strip all wire insulation no more than 3⁄8" from the end before inserting into the connector.
1. Strip the speaker wires’ insulation 3⁄8" from the end.
2. Connect the wires from the speakers to the appropriate location above “To Speakers”. Please
observe proper polarity of the connections (+ to + and – to –).
3. Connect the amplifier’s or receiver's speaker outputs to the appropriate location above “From
Receiver”.Pleaseobserveproperpolarityoftheconnections(+to+and–to–).
CAUTION: Ifthe“ToSpeakers”and“FromReceiver”connectionsarereversed,ashortcouldresult
across the amplifier or receiver output terminals, which may seriously damage your amplifier or
receiver. Please double-check all connections before turning on your amplifier or receiver.
INSTALLATION
OncetheS12/S10/S8isconnected,usethecontrolsdescribedbelowtomakeadjustmentsso
that it will blend seamlessly with the other speakers in your system.
Power Switch (See Figure 3)
ThisswitchsetsthepowermodeoftheS12/S10/S8.Select“On”or“Off”toturnthesystemon
or off. Selecting “Auto” will automatically turn the S10 / S8 on when it receives an audio signal from
your system. The subwoofer will automatically turn off when it stops receiving the audio signal.
Crossover Knob (See Figure 3)
UsethiscontroltoadjusttheupperfrequencylimitoftheS12/S10/S8.Thepurposeistocontrol
the overlap the upper frequencies of the S10 / S8 and the main speaker’s lower frequencies. We
recommend 12 o’clock as the optional setting.
Volume (S12), (S10) / Level (S8) Knob (See Figure 3)
UsethiscontroltomatchtheoutputoftheS12/S10/S8tothatofthemainspeakersinthe
system. We recommend that you play a variety of material before selecting a setting. Start with the
control in the “Min” position (completely counterclockwise) and slowly turn it up. We recommend
12 o’clock as the optional setting.
OPERATION

TROUBLESHOOTING
Ahumorbuzzingsoundisheard. The sound may be caused by a ground loop in the system. Try to eliminate
this by reversing the AC plugs of other components in the system.
Try plugging the receiver into another outlet.
Othercausesmayincludefaultycables.
The S12 / S10 / S8 will not turn on. The subwoofer must be plugged into a live AC outlet. The power switch on
the back panel must be on. A signal must be playing into the input jacks.
Nosoundisheard. Audio cable to the receiver is not connected properly or the cable is bad.
Useanothercablethatyouknowisgood.
Check all wire connections and plugs.

SUBWOOFER SPECIFICATIONS
Proficient Audio Systems warrants to the original retail purchaser only that
this product will be free from defects in materials and workmanship for a
period of two years, provided the speaker was purchased from a Proficient
AudioSystemsAuthorizedDealer.
Defectiveproductsmustbeshipped,prepaidandinsured,togetherwith
proofofpurchase,totheProcientAudioSystemsAuthorizedDealer
from whom they were purchased, or to Proficient Audio Systems at the
address listed on this installation instruction manual. Freight collect ship-
mentswillberefused.Itispreferabletoshipthisproductintheoriginal
shippingcontainertolessenthechanceoftransitdamage.Inanycase,
the risk of loss or damage in transit is to be borne by the purchaser.
If,uponexaminationattheFactoryorProcientAudioSystemsAuthorized
Dealer,itisdeterminedthattheunitwasdefectiveinmaterialsorwork-
manship at any time during this warranty period, Proficient Audio Systems
ortheProcientAudioSystemsAuthorizedDealerwill,atitsoption,
repairorreplacethisproductatnoadditionalcharge,exceptassetforth
below.Ifthismodelisnolongeravailableandcannotberepairedeffec-
tively, Proficient Audio Systems, at its sole option, may replace the unit
withacurrentmodelofequalorgreatervalue.Insomecaseswherea
new model is substituted, a modification to the mounting surface may
berequired.Ifmountingsurfacemodicationisrequired,Procient
Audio Systems assumes no responsibility or liability for such modifica-
tion. All replaced parts and product become the property of Proficient
Audio Systems. Products replaced or repaired under this Warranty will be
returned to the original retail purchaser, within a reasonable time, freight
prepaid.
This Warranty does not include service or parts to repair damage caused
by accident, disaster, misuse, abuse, negligence, inadequate packing
orshippingprocedures,commercialuse,voltageinputsinexcessofthe
ratedmaximumoftheunit,orservice,repairormodicationoftheproduct
whichhasnotbeenauthorizedorapprovedbyProcientAudioSystems.
ThisWarrantyalsoexcludesnormalcosmeticdeteriorationcausedby
environmentalconditions.ThiswarrantywillbevoidiftheSerialNumber
on the product has been removed, tampered with or defaced.
ThisWarrantyisinlieuofallotherexpressedwarranties.Iftheproductis
defective in materials or workmanship as warranted above, the purchas-
er’ssoleremedyshallberepairorreplacementasprovidedabove.Inno
event will Proficient Audio Systems be liable for any incidental or conse-
quential damages arising out of the use or inability to use the product,
evenifProcientAudioSystemsoraProcientAudioSystemsAuthorized
Dealerhasbeenadvisedofthepossibilityofsuchdamages,orforany
claimbyanyotherparty.Somestatesdonotallowtheexclusionorlimita-
tionofconsequentialdamages,sotheabovelimitationandexclusionmay
not apply.
All implied warranties on the product are limited to the duration of this
expressedWarranty.Somestatesdonotallowlimitationonthelengthof
animpliedwarranty.Iftheoriginalretailpurchaserresidesinsuchastate,
this limitation does not apply.
