I. General Information
A. This manual contains information regarding installation, operation, and maintenance of the PS Safety Access’
SafeMezz®Horizontal Gate.
B. PS Safety Access recommends that the owner implement a regular preventative maintenance program to
inspect and maintain the Horizontal Gate at a minimum, in accordance with the recommendations in this
manual.
II. Operation Guidelines
A. The Horizontal Gate is designed to meet:
1. OSHA Railing Standard 1910.28 and OSHA 1910.29.
B. Operation in a manner other than intended could result in damage or less than acceptable performance at time
of need, for which the manufacturer will not be held responsible.
III. Safety Precautions
A. Ensure opening is clear of all obstructions through the entire proposed travel of the Horizontal Gate during
operation.
B. Comply with all OSHA and ANSI Safety Regulations and/or company safety policies when installing.
DANGER If installed on edge, ensure area below installation edge is blocked off from personnel during
installation.
CAUTIONCAUTION For products that are approved for use as a means of fall protection, the product only serves as a
means of fall protection when the product is in the closed and latched position. In applications where the product
is positioned to protect a fall-edge, the person operating the product is required to implement another primary
means of fall protection, whenever the product is not closed and latched.
IMPORTANT! Due to variances in eld conditions, it is the responsibility of the installer to ensure that the product
is installed to mounting structure that is capable of supporting all imposed loading from the product. The installer
is responsible for ensuring that the provided fastening hardware or eld congured mounting arrangement is
capable of supporting all eld loads and meets applicable codes and regulations.
IV. Storage Prior to Installation of Product
A. Store materials in a dry, ventilated location. If outdoor storage is required, block materials and tarp in a tent-like
arrangement, elevated above the product with open sides to allow airow.
V. Installation Site Preparation
NOTICE Before starting site preparation and installation of the Horizontal Gate, read the entire Operation and
Maintenance Manual and review Approved for Construction Drawings and all additional installation instructions
thoroughly.

Product Information
A. Clear work area of any debris.
B. Ensure you have the necessary tools available.
C. Obtain all required permits.
D. Personnel: Determine the appropriate number of personnel required to perform installation and have them
readily available at the project site (2-3 personnel recommended).
E. Ensure all installation personnel utilize appropriate fall protection equipment and procedures during
installation.

VIII. Horizontal Gate Installation
A. Refer to replacement parts list on Page 13 and 14 for part item numbers and descriptions.
B. Colored circle decals are provided for easier installation, remove once installation is complete.
STEP 1. Determine your Slide Direction.
a. Look up at the mezzanine deck from the ground level to determine what slide direction will be needed.
1). Slide Direction RIGHT: install your gate assembly using the holes marked with green decals.
2). Slide Direction LEFT: install your gate assembly using the holes marked with blue decals.
CRITICAL Your gate should open in the direction that allows the most side room for operation.
IMPORTANT! Installation steps are shown in SLIDE DIRECTION: LEFT from Deck Side. Install your gate assembly
using the hole locations marked with blue decals.
NOTICE Installation Step 2 located on Page 5 is for Deck Mount Locations ONLY. For Face Mount Installations refer
to Page 13 before continuing to Step 3.

STEP 2. Installation of Track Assembly.
a. Line up leading edge of Track Assembly with leading edge of opening.
b. Field fasten Track Assembly to your existing structure using factory located holes. (Fasteners supplied by
the Installer.)
CRITICAL Ensure mounting surface is capable of supporting all loading. Structural analysis of mounting surface
is the responsibility of the Installer. Fasteners must be of sufcient size, grade, appropriate for anchoring
material, etc. to accept the potential loading. Consult qualied Structural Engineer.
STEP 3. Using supplied hardware from the Track Shroud Hardware Kit, begin assembling the Shroud Assembly
a. Install the Stop Bracket to farthest end of the Shroud Assembly using 1/
4” screws and ange nuts.

a. Measure 4” beyond leading edge of opening and 1/4” below top of mezzanine deck (refer to Detail M for
proper dimensions).
b. Field fasten Face Mount Track to your existing structure. (Fasteners supplied by the Installer.)

XIV. Inspection and Maintenance
A. Environmental conditional may affect the maintenance and repair requirements of the product, and
recommended preventative maintenance frequency.
B. If any of the inspection items are found to not meet the standard IMMEDIATELY “TAG OUT” the SafeMezz
Horizontal Gate removing it from active use and guard the opening until repairs are completed.
NOTICE PS Safety Access recommends that the owner implement a regular and preventative maintenance program
to inspect and maintain SafeMezz Horizontal Gate at a minimum, in accordance with the recommendations
in the table below.
WARNING While performing maintenance and inspection ensure personnel utilize appropriate fall protection
equipment and procedures. Manufacturer recommends utilizing a man-lift to perform maintenance and
inspection tasks.

XV. Training Instructions
A. PS Industries, Inc. recommends conducting formal operation training, and documenting the training, with
all personnel who will operate the product and who will be working in the area that the product is located.
Awareness of how the SafeMezz Horizontal Gate operates and the critical function it performs will improve
the likelihood that the product is respected and safely utilized.
B. The PS Industries, Inc. SafeMezz Horizontal Gate is simple yet critical piece of safety equipment in many
facilities. The SafeMezz Horizontal Gate, when in the closed and latched position, provides an effective
fall protection barrier for personnel. There are several critical components that work together to ensure
the SafeMezz Horizontal Gate will operate and perform the fall protection function. Key to performance
and longevity of the product are the Inspection and Maintenance recommendations contained in the O&M
Manual. The performance of the product is directly related to the proper operation and maintenance of the
product.
NOTICE Employers are responsible for providing supplemental training and guidelines specic to the Employer’s
facility, additional safety requirements and OSHA Regulations specic to the Employer’s industry and
specic facility safety policies. The manufacturer of the SafeMezz Horizontal Gate makes no claim to
know the specic Employer’s Safety Policies or other Regulatory Safety guidelines. Employer may need to
supplement or modify the training, inspection, maintenance, or operation instructions to meet additional
requirements.
XVI. Operating Instructions
CAUTIONCAUTION For products that are approved for use as a means of fall protection, the product only serves as a
means of fall protection when the product is in the closed and latched position. In applications where the product
is positioned to protect a fall-edge, the person operating the product is required to implement another primary
means of fall protection, whenever the product is not closed and latched.
NOTICE If you are placing material in the drop area to be retrieved by the forklift, place material prior to opening the
SafeMezz Horizontal Gate.
WARNING Always operate the manually operated SafeMezz Horizontal Gate from the Pull Handle.
A. Before Operation Checks:
1 The gate is NOT tagged-out for maintenance faults. TRUE FALSE
2 Track is clean and free of debris. TRUE FALSE
3 Upon visual inspection of the gate system, all components are in place. TRUE FALSE
4 Drop area is clean and free of debris or obstructions. TRUE FALSE
5 All personnel working in the area are WARNED of Gate Opening. TRUE FALSE
6 No personnel within 6 feet of opening. TRUE FALSE
WARNING If ANY Before Operation Checks are “FALSE” - DO NOT OPERATE!! Correct/Repair prior to operation.
B. Operation:
STEP 1. Pull upward on the Latch Release Knob to release the gate latch.
STEP 2. Utilizing the Red Pull Handle, walk the gate to the fully open position and ensure gate is latched. State at the
pull handle end of the gate.
WARNING DO NOT APPROACH THE OPEN LEADING EDGE.
WARNING DO NOT LEAVE OPEN GATE UNATTENDED.
STEP 3. When the material has been placed or removed from the drop area. Pull upward on the Latch Release Knob
to release the gate latch.
STEP 4. Utilizing the Red Pull Handle, walk the gate to the fully closed position and ensure the gate is latched.

C. During Operation Checks:
1 Latching operates smoothly and disengages/engages. TRUE FALSE

STEP 5. Pull on the Red Pull Handle to verify the gate is latched in the closed position.

STEP 7. Verbally announce to all personnel in the area that the gate is now closed and latched.
