Safety Instructions
Before You Begin
Before handling the product, read the instructions andsafetyguidelines on the
following pages to preventdamage to the productand to ensure your own personal
safety.Refer to the “Advisories”section in the Preface for advisoryconventions used
in this user’s guide, including the distinction between Warnings, Cautions,Important
Notes,and Notes.
Always use caution when handling/operating a computer.Onlyqualified,
experienced, authorized electronics service personnelshould access the
interior of a computer. The powersupplies produce high voltages and
energyhazards,which can cause bodilyharm.
Use extreme caution when installing or removing components.Refer to the
installation instructions in this user’s guide for precautions and procedures.
If you have any questions, please contactQuanmaxPost-Sales Technical
Support.
WARNING
High voltages arepresent inside the chassis when the unit’s power cord is
plugged into an electrical outlet.Turn off system power, turn offthe power
supply, and then disconnectthe power cord from its source before
removing the chassis cover.Turningoffthe system powerswitch does not
remove power to components.
When Working Inside a Computer
Before taking covers offa computer, perform the followingsteps:
1. Turn offthe computer and anyperipherals.
2. Disconnectthe computer and peripherals from their powersources or
subsystems to preventelectric shock orsystem board damage. This does not
applywhen hotswapping parts.

3. Follow the guidelines provided in “Preventing Electrostatic Discharge” on the
following page.
4. Disconnectanytelephone or telecommunications lines from the computer.
In addition, take note of these safetyguidelines when appropriate:
To help avoid possible damage tosystem boards, waitfive seconds after
turning offthe computer before removing a component, removing a system
board,or disconnecting a peripheral device from the computer.
When you disconnecta cable, pull on its connector oron its strain-reliefloop,
noton the cable itself. Some cables have a connector with locking tabs.If you
are disconnecting this type ofcable, press in on the locking tabs before
disconnecting the cable. As you pull connectors apart, keep them evenly
aligned to avoid bending anyconnector pins. Also, before connecting a cable,
make sure both connectors are correctlyoriented and aligned.
CAUTION
Do notattemptto service the system yourselfexceptas explained in this
user’s guide.Follow installation and troubleshooting instructions closely.
Preventing Electrostatic Discharge
Static electricitycan harm system boards.Perform service atan ESD workstation
and follow proper ESD procedure to reduce the risk ofdamage to components.
Quanmaxstronglyencourages you to follow proper ESD procedure, which can
include wriststraps and smocks,whenservicing equipment.
You can also take the following steps to preventdamage from electrostatic
discharge (ESD):
When unpacking a static-sensitive componentfrom its shipping carton,do not
remove the component’s antistatic packingmaterial until you are readyto install
the componentin a computer.Justbefore unwrapping the antistatic packaging,
be sure you are atan ESD workstation or grounded. This will discharge any
static electricitythatmayhave built up in your body.

When transporting asensitive component, firstplace itin an antistatic container
or packaging.
Handle all sensitive components atan ESD workstation.Ifpossible, use
antistatic floor pads and workbench pads.
Handle components and boards with care. Don’ttouch the components or
contacts on aboard.Hold a board byits edges or byits metalmounting bracket.
Do nothandle orstoresystem boards near strong electrostatic, electromagnetic,
magnetic,or radioactive fields.

Maintaining Your Computer
Environmental Factors
Temperature
The ambienttemperature within an enclosuremaybe greater than room
ambienttemperature.Installation in an enclosure should besuch thatthe
amountof air flow required for safe operation is notcompromised.
Considerationshould be given to the maximum rated ambienttemperature.
Overheating can cause a varietyof problems, including premature aging and
failure ofchips or mechanical failure ofdevices.
Ifthe system has been exposed to abnormallycold temperatures, allow a
two-hour warm-up period to bring itup to normal operating temperature before
turning iton. Failure to dosomaycause damage to internal components,
particularlythe hard disk drive.
Humidity
High-humiditycan cause moisture to enter and accumulate in thesystem. This
moisture can cause corrosion ofinternal components and degrade such

Preface

QTM
-
1500/1700/1850/1900/2150 User’sManual
properties as electrical resistance and thermal conductivity. Extreme moisture
buildup inside the system can resultin electrical shorts, which can cause
serious damage to the system.
Buildings in which climate is controlled usuallymaintain an acceptable level of
humidityfor system equipment. However, ifa system is located in an unusually
humid location,a dehumidifier can be used to maintain the humiditywithin an
acceptable range.Refer to the “Specifications”section ofthis user’s guide for
the operating and storage humidityspecifications.
Altitude
Operating asystem ata high altitude (low pressure)reduces the efficiencyof
the cooling fans to cool thesystem. This can cause electrical problems related
to arcing and corona effects. This condition can also causesealed components
with internal pressure, such as electrolytic capacitors,to fail or perform at
reduced efficiency.
Power Protection
The greatestthreats to a system’s supplyofpower are power loss, powerspikes,
and powersurges caused byelectricalstorms, which interruptsystem operation
and/or damagesystem components. To protectyour system, always properly
ground power cables and one ofthe following devices.
Surge Protector
Surge protectors are available in a varietyoftypes and usuallyprovide a level
ofprotection proportional with the costofthe device.Surge protectors prevent
voltage spikes from entering asystem through theAC power cord.Surge
protectors,however,do notoffer protection againstbrownouts,which occur
when the voltage drops more than 20 percentbelow the normalAC line voltage
level.
Line Conditioner
Line conditioners go beyond the overvoltage protection of surge protectors.
Line conditioners keep asystem’s AC power source voltage ata fairlyconstant
level and, therefore, can handle brownouts.Because ofthis added protection,
line conditioners costmore than surge protectors. However, line conditioners
cannotprotectagainsta complete loss ofpower.

Uninterruptible Power Supply
Uninterruptible powersupply(UPS) systems offer the most complete protection
againstvariations on power because theyuse batterypower to keep the server
running whenAC power is lost. The batteryis charged bythe AC power while it
is available,so whenAC power is lost, the batterycan provide power to the
system for a limited amountoftime, depending on the UPSsystem.
UPS systems range in price from a few hundred dollars to several thousand
dollars, with the more expensive units allowing you to run largersystems for a
longer period oftime whenAC power is lost.UPS systems thatprovide only5
minutes ofbatterypower letyou conductan orderlyshutdown of the system,
butare notintended to provide continuedoperation.Surge protectors should be
used with all UPSsystems, and the UPSsystem should be Underwriters
Laboratories (UL) safetyapproved.
