This user manual provides vi al informa ion for successfully opera ing your GPS. Not all
sections in this manual will apply to your GPS device. Direc ly undernea h he i le for

Mini USB
This cable connec s your PC o a Quan um base s a ion or your PC o a drop off
mechanism. You will only receive i if you purchased one of hese wo produc s. All
drop off mechanisms purchased af er January 1, 2012 will use he Micro USB cable.
Micro USB
This is he mos common cable we will ship. I connec s your GPS o your PC.
BNC/SMA cable
This only ships if you purchased a UHF Yagi an enna.

2.1 Introduction

2.2a User programma ility
You may choose o program your uni s in one of hree differen ways. Those choices are
empla e mode, repea mode, or always on mode. Always on Mode is no available in all
uni s: see available options for more informa ion.
Template Mode
Your GPS uni will a emp o acquire loca ions based upon a series of unique empla es
ha you crea e and schedule in o he calendar. The user has he op ion o crea e up o 26
differen empla es.
Repeat Mode
Your GPS uni will a emp o acquire loca ions based upon a user de ermined fixed
in erval of up o 48 hours.
2.2 GPS timeout
The GPS imeou is he user programmed period of ime ha he GPS will remain on.
Once his ime period has been reached he GPS will urn off even if i has ye o acquire
a loca ion. You can program he GPS imeou o 60, 90 or 120 seconds. The imeou you
se has a direc correla ion o he success ra e of your GPS loca ion a emp s.
2.2c GPS additional time
While he GPS receiver can urn off shor ly af er i acquires a sa elli e, programming i o
s ay on longer will allow i o find more sa elli es and acquire a more precise fix. The
se ing which allows his is called GPS Addi ional Time, and can be programmed by he
user o any number up o he GPS Timeou . The GPS Timeou is s ill he limi ha he
GPS will remain on and will no be ex ended by GPS Addi ional Time.
Note
: The maximum GPS addi ional ime ha is allowed is 120 seconds. However, af er
much es ing, i has been de ermined ha any se ing over 45 seconds is no needed and
will fur her use decrease your ba ery life.
2.2d Temperature Sensor
Your uni is equipped wi h a empera ure sensor. Each ime a GPS loca ion is a emp ed
a empera ure reading will be ou pu from he empera ure sensor in o he memory.
Note: Whenever using GPS uni s wi h rechargeable ba eries, please do no do any hing
ha may help o raise he na ural empera ure of he uni s when in he environmen .
Placing he uni s in a ho car, on me al, in plas ic bags, e c, may cause he uni s o

overhea . Once a rechargeable ba ery ge s o be above 60 degrees Celsius, major
problems may arise and your uni s may no longer be func ional.
2.2e Non-volatile Memory
The memory in your GPS uni is non-vola ile. This means ha i does no require
elec rical curren o re ain he da a in he memory. If your uni has da a and he ba ery is
comple ely devoid of vol age, your da a are safe. The uni will no be capable of remo e
download while he ba ery is drained, bu re rieving he uni and connec ing i o a PC
via he USB cable will allow you o ex rac your da a.
2.2f On/Off Switch
The VHF ransmi er is con rolled by a magne ically opera ed on/off swi ch. Remove he
ransmi er magne from he uni o ac iva e he ransmi er. To urn off he ransmi er
une he frequency in o your VHF receiver and replace he magne on he VHF por ion of
he device. Be sure o lis en o he receiver so ha you can confirm ha he ransmi er is
off.
The GPS da a logger is con rolled by a magne ically opera ed on/off swi ch. Remove he
magne o urn he GPS da a logger on. Please no e ha removing he magne from he
GPS will rese i s ime and i will begin a emp ing o acquire he ime from a sa elli e
every 20 minu es un il i succeeds. Connec he uni o a PC and click ‘Se ime’ in Collar
SW o avoid his problem. If in he field when a magne is removed, please have uni in
an open space where i may ob ain sa elli e connec ion and se i s ime.
Color Coding and Magnet Placement
Mos GPS devices buil af er June of 2010 include a color coordina ed labeling sys em o
iden ify he correc loca ion o replace he magne when preparing he GPS for s orage.
Note: As of May 2012, all backpack GPS uni s will receive a small whi e s ripe
indica ing he placemen of he GPS an enna. This whi e s ripe mus be visible and
facing he sky when moun ed on he animal or during es ing o ensure receiving good
GPS da a resul s.

2.3a Drop off mechanism
The key elemen o he drop off mechanism’s reliable opera ion is a very small ac ua or.
The ac ua or is securely held in he wa erproof drop off housing. I is very impor an o
no e ha he drop off mechanism empera ure range of opera ion is -40º C. o +50º C.
The drop off mechanism will no opera e ou side of his empera ure range.
2.3 Collar expanda ility
For all orders ha incorpora e an expandable collar, he designs are cus omized and
should be considered experimen al unless he end user has previous experience wi h he
design.
2.3c User replacea le atteries
The fea ure is cus omized based on your needs. Remember he connec ion be ween your
GPS and your user replaceable ba ery mus be horoughly covered in RTV prior o
deploymen o pro ec agains wa er damage.
Warning: The user replaceable ba eries have exposed connec ions. While handling keep
he connec ions away from any me al objec .
2.3d Wireless remote control data transfer
Wi h his op ion you may connec o your uni wirelessly using he Teleme ry Solu ions
base s a ion. This sys em is on demand. The remo e da a ransfer sys em uses he same
ba ery as he GPS module. There is no limi o he number of imes ha you may
connec by wireless, as long as he ba ery s ill has capaci y. The base s a ion uses a very
minimal amoun of he GPS uni ’s ba ery when connec ed.

2.3e Always on Mode
Depending upon your programming, your GPS uni will a emp o acquire loca ions
every 5, 10 or 20 seconds. These a emp s may be programmed o begin a some ime and
da e in he fu ure. This fea ure is no available in conjunc ion wi h he ac ivi y senor
op ion.
2.3f Activity Sensor
The ac ivi y sensor opera es independen ly of he GPS and will record da a based on your
desired specifica ions. I is user programmable o mee your needs. To learn more,
please see section 6.3. This fea ure is available by i self or in conjunc ion wi h he Smar
GPS fea ure. I is no available in conjunc ion wi h he always on programming mode
op ion.
2.3g Smart GPS Sensor
The smar GPS fea ure influences he opera ion of he GPS based upon he s udy animals’
ac ivi y level. The purpose of he smar GPS fea ure is wofold. Firs , i may
drama ically increase he number of successful GPS loca ion a emp s ou pu from he
uni . Second, i may drama ically increase he ba ery life of he uni . This is especially
impor an for very small GPS collars and backpacks. This fea ure is available as a s and
alone op ion or in conjunc ion wi h he s andard ac ivi y sensor. I is no compa ible wi h
he always on programming mode op ion.
2.3h Mortality Indicator
Your VHF ransmi er is equipped wi h a mo ion de ec or. This will de ec movemen .
Af er a specific period of ime (pre-de ermined by he user during he ordering process)
has elapsed wi hou any mo ion de ec ed, he VHF pulse ra e will double, indica ing
mor ali y. The mor ali y even is no s amped in he memory. Only available by reques
for GPS uni s ha include a VHF ransmi er.
2.3i VHF Transmitter
Your uni con ains a VHF ransmi er ha will be on from he momen you remove he
magne from he ransmi er from he whi e do on he GPS uni . Consul your packing
lis for he ba ery life of his ransmi er. The VHF ransmi er will help you loca e he
uni and, via i s mo ion de ec or, whe her he animal is alive or dead.

2.3j Solar Power
Solar powered GPS comes in wo forms: wi h a rechargeable ba ery and wi hou .
• Solar with rechargeable battery: Wi h his configura ion, ul ra-ligh weigh
solar GPS devices are possible. I uses a solar panel o charge a ba ery ha in urn
allows you o ge GPS posi ions during he nigh while relying on solar power.
There are wo primary programming se ings: day mode and nigh mode. Wi h
his configura ion, you can se your GPS o acquire fixes a a differen in erval
depending on he ime of day.
• Solar without a rechargeable battery: Wi h his op ion, i is no possible o
con rol he ime or mul i ude of your GPS fix a emp s. Every ime when here is
enough solar power o do so, he GPS will a emp a fix. Because of he rapid
charging, i is cable of ge ing more han hree imes he amoun of fixes as he
rechargeable ba ery op ion. Over he course of one day, in good sun, you may be
able o log over 250 posi ions.
2.3k Collar Auto
Collar Au o is an addi ional program ha is no par of he s andard GPS wi h remo e
download package. This program is designed o au oma ically download he GPS da a
from your Quan um GPS devices wi hou he user being presen . I will follow he

3.1 Introduction
Collar SW is he user’s in erface wi h a Teleme ry Solu ions’ GPS. This sof ware allows
you o program your GPS posi ioning schedule and re rieve your da a.
Wi h he user sof ware you may easily se up your collars, backpacks or pods, crea e a
GPS program, edi he uni , upload program files, download da a and de ermine es ima ed
ba ery life.
Note: If you are running a Chinese or Japanese version of Windows, you may need o
swap he opera ing sys em o English o allow he Collar SW sof ware work correc ly.

1. On a web browser naviga e o h p://www. eleme rysolu ions.com/sof ware-and-
manuals.php
2. En er in your order number in he box and press En er.
3. Download he user sof ware.
4. Run se up.
5. Plug he USB cable in o he compu er and your Quan um GPS.
6. A dialogue balloon will appear in he bo om righ corner of your compu er. Click
on new hardware found and he new hardware wizard will appear.
If he balloon doesn’ appear, you can
access he hardware wizard by following
his pa h: s ar /con rol panel/add
hardware.
7. Click No, no his ime, hen nex .
8. A new dialog box will appear reading,
"What would you like the wizard to do?"
Click ins all from a lis or specific loca ion
hen nex .
9. The hird dialog box will read, Please
choose your search and ins alla ion op ions. Choose don’t, search, I will choose
the driver to install.
10. Direc he ins alla ion o he following pa h: C:\Program files\Collar sw\Serial
drivers.

12. A box wi h flying folders will appear indica ing driver ins alla ion. A dialog box
opens ha reads, has no passed Windows Logo. Click continue anyway.

Note: If he sof ware does no immedia ely recognize he GPS uni , his is a very easy fix.
1. Click on he Start bu on on he lower lef of he desk op. In he Search
Programs and Files box, ype in Device Manager.
2. Once he Device Manager appears, click on i o open i .
3. Under Universal Serial Bus Controllers or Ports and Hubs, you may see
some hing ha says i is an Unknown Device. Righ click on his and selec
Update Driver Software.
4. Click Browse my computer for driver software.

SW209\Serial drivers

7. A dialog box some imes opens ha reads, has no passed Windows Logo. Click
continue anyway.

The Collar SW sof ware can ins all on Windows 8. However, here are qui e a few ex ra
s eps o ge i up and running correc ly.
1. On your desk op, move your mouse cursor o he upper righ par on he screen
hen selec se ings ->change pc se ings->choose General –> Under “Advanced
S ar up” –> Res ar now.
2. Now he sys em will res ar and migh ake a couple minu es o show up o he
boo menu.
3. Af er some ime, you will be promp ed wi h a menu wi h following op ions:
Con inue, Troubleshoo & Turn off. Click Troubleshoo
4. Then he following menu op ions appear: Refresh your PC, Rese your PC, &
Advanced Op ions. Choose Advanced Op ions.
5. Then he following menu op ions appear: Sys em Res ore, Sys em Image
Recovery, Au oma ic Repair, Command Promp & Windows S ar up se ings.
Choose Windows S ar up Se ings, hen Click Res ar .
