This safety symbol indicates important safety
messages in this manual. When you see this
symbol, be alert to the possibility of injury, carefully

3.1OPERATINGINSTRUCTIONS
• Ensure that the instructions in this book
arereadandfullyunderstood.
• Nopersonshouldbeallowedtooperate
this machine unless they are fully
acquainted with all the controls and the
safetyprocedures.
• Neverallowchildrenorpeopleunfamiliar
with these instructions to usethis
machine. Local regulations may restrict
theage oftheoperator.
3.2SAFETYSIGNS
• It is essential all safety labels are kept
legible, if they are missing or illegible they
must be replaced. If any part of the
machine is replaced and it originally
carried a safety label, a new label must be
affixedtothe replacement part. New
safetylabelsareobtainablefrom
Ransomesdealers.
3.3STARTINGTHEENGINE
• Before starting the engine check that the
brakesareapplied,drivesareinneutral,
guards are in position and intact, and
bystandersareclearof the machine.
• Do not run the engine in a building without
adequateventilation.
3.4DRIVINGTHEMACHINE
• Beforemovingthemachine,check to
ensure that all parts are in good working
order,payingparticularattentionto
brakes, tyres, steering and the security of
cuttingblades.
• Replace faulty silencers, mow only in
daylightorgoodartificial light
• AlwaysobservetheHighwayCodebothon
andoffthe roads.Keepalertand awareat
all times. Watch out for traffic when
crossingornearroadways.
• Stopthe bladesrotatingbeforecrossing
surfacesotherthangrass.
• Rememberthatsomepeoplearedeafor
blind and that children and animals can
beunpredictable.
• Keeptravellingspeedslowenoughforan
emergencystoptobeeffectiveandsafe
at all times, in any conditions.
• Removeoravoidobstructionsinthearea
to be cut, thus reducing the possibility of
injurytoyourselfand/orbystanders.
• Whenreversing,takespecial care to
ensure that the area behind is clear of
obstructionsand/orbystanders. DO
NOTcarrypassengers.
• Keep in mind that the operator or user is
responsibleforaccidentsorhazards
occurringto otherpeopleortheir
property.
• When the machine is to be parked,
storedorleftunattended,lowerthe
cutting means unless the transport locks
arebeingused.
• Whilemowing,always wear substantial
footwearandlong trousers. Donot
operatetheequipmentwhenbarefootor
wearingopensandals.
• Checkthegrasscatcherfrequently for
wearordeterioration. Afterstriking a
foreignobject. Inspect. thelawnmower
fordamageandmakerepairsbefore
restartingandoperatingtheequipment.
• Ifthemachinestarts to vibrate
abnormally,checkimmediately.
3.5TRANSPORTING
• Ensure that the cutting units are
securelyfastenedin thetransport
position. Do not transport with cutting
mechanismrotating.
• Drivethemachinewithdueconsideration
ofroadandsurfaceconditions, inclines
andlocalundulations.
• Suddendeceleratingorbrakingcan
cause the rear wheels to lift.
• Remember that the stability of the rear of
the machine is reduced as the fuel is
used.
3.6LEAVINGTHEDRIVINGPOSITION
• Parkthemachineonlevelground.
• Beforeleavingthedrivingposition,stop
theengine andmakesureallmoving
parts are stationary. Apply brakes and
disengagealldrives.Removethestarter
key.

• Localundulations andsinkagewillchange
thegeneralslope.Avoidgroundconditions
which can cause the machine to slide.
• Keep machine speeds low on slopes and
duringtightturns.
• Suddendeceleratingorbrakingcancause
the rear wheels to lift. Remember there is
no such thing as a “safe” slope.
• Travelongrassslopesrequiresparticular
care.
DONOTUSEONSLOPESGREATERTHAN15°
IMPORTANT: When working on any slope set the
weight transfer, if fitted to its maximum (+) setting.
3.8BLOCKEDCUTTINGCYLINDERS
• Stoptheengine and makesureall moving
partsarestationary.
• Applybrakesanddisengagealldrives.
• Release blockages with care. Keep all parts
of the body away from the cutting edge.
Bewareofenergyinthedrivewhichcan
causerotationwhentheblockageis released.
• Keepotherpeopleawayfromthecutting units
as rotation of one cylinder can cause the
others to rotate.
3.9ADJUSTMENTS,LUBRICATIONAND
MAINTENANCE
All vehicles
• Stoptheengine and makesureall moving
partsarestationary.
• Applybrakesanddisengagealldrives.
• Readalltheappropriateservicinginstructions.
• Use only the replacement parts supplied by
theoriginalmanufacturer.
• When adjusting the cutting cylinders take
carenottoget hands andfeettrappedwhen
rotatingcylinders.
• Makesurethatotherpeople are not touching
any cutting units, as rotation of one cylinder
can cause the others to rotate.
• Toreduce thefirehazard,keeptheengine,
silencerandbatterycompartmentsfreeof
grass,leavesorexcessivegrease.
• Replacewornordamagedpartsforsafety.
• Whenworkingunderneathliftedpartsor
machines,makesureadequatesupportIs
provided.
• Do not dismantle the machine without
releasingorrestrainingforceswhichcan
causepartstomove suddenly.
• Donotalterenginespeedabovemaximum
quoted in Engine Specification. Do not
changetheenginegovernorsettingsor
overspeedtheengine. Operatingtheengine
at excessive speed may increase the hazard
ofpersonalinjury.
• Whenservicing batteries,DONOTSMOKE,
and keep naked lights away.
• Do not place any metal objects across the
terminals.
Diesel & Petrol vehicles
• Whenrefuelling,STOPTHEENGINE,DO
NOTSMOKE.Addfuelbefore startingthe
engine,neveraddfuelwhiletheengineis
running.
• Useafunnelwhenpouring fuelfroma caninto
the tank.
• Do not fill the fuel tank beyond the bottom of
the filler neck.
• Replace all fuel tank and container caps
securely.
• Storefuelin containersspecificallydesigned
forthispurpose.
• Refueloutdoorsonly and donotsmoke while
refuelling.
• If fuel is spilled, do not attempt to start the
enginebutmovethemachineawayfromthe
areaofspillageandavoidcreatinganysource
ofignitionuntilfuelvapourshavedissipated.
• Allow the engine to cool before storing in any
enclosure.
• Neverstore theequipment withfuelinthe
tankinsideabuildingwhere fumes may reach
anopenflame orspark.
• If the fuel tank has to be drained, this should
bedoneoutdoors.
• Do not spill fuel onto hot components.
LPG vehicles
• Only trained & competent personnel in the
useofLPGasa road vehicle fuelare
allowed to work on LPG aspects of the
vehiclesengineorfuelsystem.
• Whenrefuelling,STOPTHEENGINE,DO
NOTSMOKE.Addfuelbefore startingthe
engine,neveraddfuelwhiletheengineis
running.
• Vehicles should not be parked within 3
metersofanyheatsource,openflameor
othersourcesofignition.
• Vehiclesshouldnotbeservicedoveran
inspection pit
• If for any reason a leak in the fuel
systemis suspected,the vehicle
should be moved to an isolated area
clear of buildings & people and as far
as possible from drains and any source
of ignition.

IMPORTANT: Transport speed is for highway
use only. Never select transport speed
on grass areas or uneven or unsurfaced
roadsortracks.
TheoperatingInstructionsfortheCuttingUnitsare
contained in a separate Publication .
• Thefuelfillerbayonetonthevehicleshould
beinspectedregularlyforany signs of
damage.
• The gas used to fill the vehicle must be
sourcedfromareputablesupplier.
• If a machine starts to vent gas when it is
runningitshouldbemovedtoan area
awayfromanysources of ignitionand
stopped. If it vents when static the
machine should not be started, all
potentialsourcesof ignition shouldbe
inhibiteduntil theventing hasstoppedand
thelocalRansomesJacobsendealer
shouldbecontacted.
• WherepracticalLPGfuelledvehicles
should be parked in the open air, in a well
ventilated position. Where this is not
reasonably practical due to lack of space,
security ect. vehicles should be parked
insidesuitablydesigned buildingsor

Cutting Unit Transport Latches are a
Secondary Safety Devise.
When Transporting the machine the
Cutting units should be held in the
Transport position on the Hydraulics with
the Transport Latches Engaged.
1. Park the machine on level ground.
2. Whilst seated in the driving position
With the engine at operating speed
raise the cutting units fully by
operating lift levers, return the lever to
the neutral position.
DO NOT move the lever into the
lower position.
3. Disengage drives, stop the engine and
make sure all moving parts are
stationary. Apply brakes and remove
the starter key.
4. Transport latches can now be engaged
or released.
Before releasing transport latches
it is important that all cutting units
are fully raised.

Change Engine Oil.
(a) Warm up the engine first and then shut it
off.Removeoildrainplugfromthebottom
of the crankcase and wipe it off.
(b) Replace thedrainplug andfillenginewith
6.4 litres of oil.
Change Engine Oil Filter.
(a) Removesingle-unitcartridge(A)
(b) Apply thin coat of oil to cartridge gasket
beforeinstalling.
(c) Tighten filterbyhandonly.
(d) Check for oilleaksaroundthe cartridge
gasket after engine is started.
LUBRICATION.

filling the hydraulic tank. Oil must be filtered
througha25micronfilterbeforeenteringthe
hydraulictank.

Lowerallcuttingunitsontolevelground.Beforeleaving
thedrivingposition, stoptheengine andmakesure all
movingpartsarestationary.Applybrakesand
disengagealldrives.removethestarterkey.Thedirect
drivehydraulicmotorcanberemovedfromthecutting
unitbyremovingthetwoscrewsandwashersholding
themotortothebearinghousing.Carefullywithdraw
themotorfromthe bearing housing, it isimportantnot
tocontaminatethemotor shaftorinternalsplines of
thecuttingcylinder.If for any reasontheyare
contaminated,theyshouldbecleanedbydegreasing.
Liberallylubricatethe motorandcylinder splineswith
ShellMalleusJB1grease beforereassembling.

whereheatingappliances,pilotlights or any
sort of open flame is present.
• Beforestoring,allowtheengineto cool, and
drainfuelcompletely fromfueltanksand
containers.
• Maximum safety and best mowing results
can only be expected if the mower is
maintainedandoperatedproperly.

5.12 END OF SEASON or when required
Change Hydraulic filter.
1. Lowerthecentrecutting unittoimprove
access.
2. Wipe filter bowl (A) and housing to remove
any dirt present.
3. Place a suitable drip tray on top of the centre
cutting unit.
4. Unscrewbowlandremoveoilfilterelement
and disposes of safely.
5. Replacewithnewelement.
6. Coat the top outside lip of the filter bowl with
a thin film of oil and refit filter bowl and
torque to 54Nm, as indicated on decal.
7. Start engine and idle for 15 seconds.
8. Stop engine, check filter bowl for leaks and
checkreservoir
NOTE: It is important that absolute cleanliness
isobservedwhenchangingthefilter.
Change Coolant.
1. Completelydrainthe coolingwaterfromthe
radiatordrainplug(B)andflush thecooling
systemwithflushing detergent.
2. Check for leaks or loose connections at the
radiator, cylinder head gasket, drain cock etc.
3. Mix antifreeze coolant and water at the
specifiedratiobeforepouringintotheengine.
Note: When topping up the cooling system fill with a
50/50solution.
Check Rear Wheel Bearings. (2WD Only)
1. Jack up, and securely chock the rear of the
machineusingpoints indicatoredin
section 5.2
2. Checkforfree-playinbearings,
3. Iffree-playisfoundremovedustcoverand
split pin and tighten castlated nut till all free-
play is eliminated.
Transmission Foot Pedal & Cable
Inspectthecablefordamageandfreedomof
movement. Fully cycle the cable to check that the
inner element is in good condition. Inspect the outer
sheathfordamageandalignment.Correctorreplace
asappropriate
