2.2PRODUCTIDENTIFICATION
2.1IMPORTANT
IMPORTANT: This is a precision machine and the service obtained from it depends on the way it is operated and
maintained.
This SAFETY AND OPERATORS MANUAL should be regarded as part of the machine. Suppliers of both new and
second-hand machines are advised to retain documentary evidence that this manual was provided with the
machine.
This machine is designed solely for use in customary grass cutting operations. Use in any other way is
considered as contrary to the intended use. Compliance with and strict adherence to the conditions of operation,
service and repair as specified by the manufacturer, also constitute essential elements of the intended use.
Before attempting to operate this machine, ALL operators MUST read through this manual and make themselves
thoroughly conversant with Safety Instructions, controls, lubrication and maintenance.
Accident prevention regulations, all other generally recognized regulations on safety and occupational medicine,
and all road traffic regulations shall be observed at all times.
Any arbitrary modifications carried out on this machine may relieve the manufacturer of liability for any resulting
damage or injury.

3.1 OPERATINGINSTRUCTIONS
• Ensure that the instructions in this book
arereadandfullyunderstood.
• Nopersonshouldbeallowedtooperate
this machine unless they are fully
acquainted with all the controls and the
safetyprocedures.
• Neverallowchildrenorpeopleunfamiliar
with these instructions to use this
machine. Local regulations may restrict
theage oftheoperator.
3.2 SAFETYSIGNS
• It is essential all safety labels are kept
legible, if they are missing or illegible they
must be replaced. If any part of the
machine is replaced and it originally
carried a safety label, a new label must be
affixedtothereplacementpart. New
safetylabelsareobtainablefrom
Ransomesdealers.
3.3 STARTINGTHEENGINE
• Before starting the engine check that the
brakesareapplied,drivesareinneutral,
guards are in position and intact, and
bystandersareclearofthe machine.
• Do not run the engine in a building without
adequateventilation.
3.4 DRIVINGTHEMACHINE
• Beforemovingthe machine,checkto
ensure that all parts are in good working
order,payingparticularattentionto
brakes, tyres, steering and the security of
cuttingblades.
• Replace faulty silencers, mow only in
daylightorgoodartificiallight
• AlwaysobservetheHighwayCodebothon
andofftheroads.Keep alert and aware at
all times. Watch out for traffic when
crossingornearroadways.
• Stopthebladesrotatingbeforecrossing
surfacesotherthan grass.
• Remember that some people are deaf
or blind and that children and animals
can be unpredictable.
• Keeptravellingspeedslowenoughforan
emergencystoptobeeffectiveandsafe
at all times, in any conditions.
• Removeoravoidobstructionsinthearea
to be cut, thus reducing the possibility of
injurytoyourself and/orbystanders.
• Whenreversing,take special care to
ensure that the area behind is clear of
obstructionsand/or bystanders. DO

• Keep in mind that the operator or user is
responsibleforaccidentsorhazards
occurringto otherpeopleor their
property.
• When the machine is to be parked,
storedorleftunattended,lowerthe
cutting means unless the transport locks
arebeingused.
• Whilemowing,alwayswearsubstantial
footwearandlong trousers. Do not
operatetheequipmentwhenbarefootor
wearingopensandals.
• Checkthegrass catcher frequentlyfor
wearordeterioration. Afterstrikinga
foreign object. Inspect the lawnmower
fordamageandmakerepairsbefore
restartingandoperatingtheequipment.
• Ifthemachinestartstovibrate
abnormally,checkimmediately.
3.5 TRANSPORTING
• Ensure that the cutting units are
securelyfastenedinthe transport
position. Do not transport with cutting
mechanismrotating.
• Drivethemachinewithdueconsideration
ofroadand surfaceconditions,inclines
andlocalundulations.
• Suddendeceleratingorbrakingcan
cause the rear wheels to lift.
• Remember that the stability of the rear of
the machine is reduced as the fuel is
used.

3.6 LEAVINGTHEDRIVINGPOSITION
• Parkthemachineonlevelground.
• Beforeleavingthedrivingposition,stopthe
engineandmakesureallmovingpartsare
stationary. Apply brakes and disengage all
drives.Removethestarterkey.
3.7 SLOPES
TAKEEXTRACAREWHENWORKINGON
SLOPES
• Localundulations andsinkagewill change
thegeneralslope.Avoidgroundconditions
which can cause the machine to slide.
• Keep machine speeds low on slopes and
duringtightturns.
• Suddendeceleratingorbrakingcancause
the rear wheels to lift. Remember there is
no such thing as a “safe” slope.
• Travelongrassslopesrequiresparticular
care.
DONOTUSEONSLOPESGREATERTHAN15°
IMPORTANT: When working on any slope set the
weight transfer, if fitted to its maximum (+) setting.
3.8 BLOCKEDCUTTINGCYLINDERS
• Stoptheengineandmakesureallmoving
partsarestationary.
• Applybrakesanddisengagealldrives.
• Release blockages with care. Keep all parts
of the body away from the cutting edge.
Bewareofenergyinthedrivewhichcan
causerotation when the blockage is released.
• Keepother people away from thecutting units
as rotation of one cylinder can cause the
others to rotate.
3.9 ADJUSTMENTS,LUBRICATIONAND
MAINTENANCE
• Stoptheengineandmakesureallmoving
partsarestationary.
• Applybrakesanddisengagealldrives.
• Readalltheappropriateservicinginstructions.
• Use only the replacement parts supplied by
theoriginalmanufacturer.
• When adjusting the cutting cylinders take
carenottogethandsandfeettrappedwhen
rotatingcylinders.
• Makesure that other people are not touching
any cutting units, as rotation of one cylinder
can cause the others to rotate.
• Toreduce thefirehazard, keeptheengine,
silencerandbatterycompartmentsfreeof
grass,leavesorexcessivegrease.
• Replacewornordamagedpartsforsafety.
• Whenworkingunderneathliftedpartsor
machines,makesure adequate supportIs
provided.
• Do not dismantle the machine without
releasingorrestrainingforceswhichcan
causepartstomovesuddenly.
• Donotalterenginespeedabovemaximum
quoted in Engine Specification. Do not
changetheenginegovernorsettingsor
overspeedtheengine. Operatingtheengine
at excessive speed may increase the hazard
ofpersonalinjury.
• Whenrefuelling,STOPTHEENGINE,DO
NOTSMOKE.Add fuelbeforestartingthe
engine,neveraddfuelwhiletheengineis
running.
• Useafunnel when pouringfuelfroma caninto
the tank.
• Do not fill the fuel tank beyond the bottom of
the filler neck.
• Replaceall fuel tank and container caps
securely.
• Storefuelincontainers specifically designed
forthispurpose.
• Refueloutdoorsonlyanddonotsmokewhile
refuelling.
• If fuel is spilled, do not attempt to start the
enginebutmovethemachineawayfromthe
areaofspillageandavoidcreatinganysource
ofignitionuntilfuelvapourshavedissipated.
• Allow the engine to cool before storing in any
enclosure.
• Neverstore theequipmentwith fuelinthe
tankinside a building where fumes may reach
anopenflameor spark.
• If the fuel tank has to be drained, this should
bedoneoutdoors.
• Do not spill fuel onto hot components.
• Whenservicing batteries,DONOTSMOKE,
and keep naked lights away.
• Do not place any metal objects across the
terminals.

4.4 VIBRATIONLEVEL
The machine was tested for whole body and hand/
arm vibration levels. The operator was seated in
the normal operating position with both hands on
the steering mechanism. The engine was running
and the cutting device was rotating with the machine
stationary.

By depressing button B Lever A can be operated
therebyengagingforwarddriveandcylinderrotation
(Cylinder will only rotate if Cylinder clutch is
engagedsee6.4).
When handle A is released, button B will spring
back into position, blocking the operation of Lever A.

Operator Presence Control (OPC)
By sliding grip A in the direction shown Lever B can
bedepressedtherebyengagingforwarddriveand
cylinderrotation(Cylinderwillonly rotate if Cylinder
clutch is engaged see 6.4).
When lever B is released, grip A will spring back into
position,blockingtheoperationofLever B.This
control is only on the right hand side of the
machine.
Landroll Clutch
(Fig.6.1C.2)
Withtheenginerunning,pullleverAtowardsthegrip
to disengage the landroll clutch.This will allow the
machine to be pulled easily backwards when in
confined areas. This control is located on the left
handside of the machine.

The ignition switch is located on the front of the
engine.Theengine ignitionisswitchedon bymoving
the lever to the ‘1’ position. To stop the engine
close the throttle and move the switch to the ‘0’
position.

7 OPERATION
The daily inspection should be performed
only when the engine is off and all fluids
are cold. Lower implements to the
ground, engage parking brake, stop
engine and remove ignition key.
CAUTION
7.1 DAILYINSPECTION
1. Performavisualinspectionof the entire unit, look for signs of wear,loosehardware and missing or
damaged components. Check for fuel and oil leaks to ensure connections are tight and hoses and
tubesarein good condition.
2. Check the fuel supply, crankcase oil level and air cleaner. All fluids must be at the full mark with the
enginecold.
3. Make sure the cutting unit is adjusted to the required height of cut.
4. Test the operator presence and safety interlock system.

7.2 OPERATOR PRESENCE AND SAFETY INTERLOCK SYSTEM
1. Theoperator presence systemcontrolstheprimarydrive clutch.Theenginecanbe startedbutdrive
cannotbeengageduntiltheoperatorpresencesystemhasbeen engaged (see 6.1). When the
primarydriveisengagedthemachinewill move forward, the cylinder will only rotateifthecylinder
clutch is engaged (see 6.5). When the handle grips are released the machine will come to a stop,
with the engine still running.
2. Performeachofthefollowingteststo ensure the operator presence system is functioning properly.
Stop the test and have the system inspected and repaired if any of the tests fail as listed below:
• Withtheenginerunningandthe handlegripsreleased, themachineshould notmoveforwardandthe
cylindershould not rotate.
• EngagetheOperator Presence system (see 6.1), once the machineismoving release the handle
grips. The machine should come to a controlled stop; with the drive and cylinder (if engaged) dis-
engaged, withthe enginerunning.
3. Refer to the chart below for each test and follow the check (9) marks across the chart. Shut engine
offbetween eachtest.
Test 1: (This simulates normal cutting operation) With the engine running and the cylinder clutch
engaged. When the Operator Presence System is engaged the cylinder should rotate and the
machinewillbedrivenforward.
Test 2: With the engine running and the cylinder clutch engaged. With the Operator Presence
Systemdisengagedthecylinderwillnot rotate and there will notbedrivenforward.
Test 3: (This simulates transportation of the machine) With the engine running and the cylinder clutch
disengaged. When the Operator Presence System is engaged the cylinder will not rotate and the
machinewillbedrivenforward.
Test 4: With the engine running and cylinder clutch disengaged. With the Operator Presence System
disengagedthecylinder willnotrotateand the machinewillnotbe drivenforward.
