Using the Reliance Wi-Fi SER8189
Introduction
Thank you for purcha ing the Reliance Wi-Fi SER8189 portable router.
Thi guide de cribe the brow er Interface that allow you to configure the Reliance Wi-Fi SER8189. For information
about etting up your device, device maintenance and care, etc., con ult the printed Quick Start Guide that come
with thi device for Help on initial in tallation.
We recommend that you read thi manual before you tart u ing the Reliance Wi-Fi SER8189.
Charging the Reliance Wi-Fi SER8189 Device
ote.
The battery should be fully charged before using the
Reliance Wi-Fi SER8189 for the first time.
We recommend an initial charge time of a roximately
2 hours. When fully charged, a solid green light will a ear
next to ‘Power’ dis lay on the device.

A red or orange light indicates you need to re-charge. AC- Ada ter is Included in your Reliance Wi-Fi SER8189

How to Connect to the Reliance Wi-Fi SER8189 (Window U er / MAC U er )
1. Turn on the Reliance Wi-Fi SER8189 and en ure your Wi-Fi i enabled on your PC or laptop. You can view your
available wirele network by going through the following path Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center ->
Connect to a network OR syste tray (lower right hand corner of your screen).

For MAC users: You can view your available wireless networks by going through the following ath Airport ->
Open etwork Preferences -> Advanced -> Airport
For Linux users: Follow the age from 11 to 16 of this User Guide.
2. Select “Reliance Wi-Fi SER8189 XXXX” a your wirele network.
ote.
The last 4 digits, ‘XXXX’ of the SSID are the last four digits of your MAC (Media Access Control) address. You can
find the MAC address of your Reliance Wi-Fi SER8189 on the label under the battery.

3. Click Connect.
The default ecurity for the Reliance Wi-Fi SER8189 i WEP 64-bit. The default ecurity key i “12345.” Enter
12345 to continue connecting to the Reliance Wi-Fi SER8189.

If you would like to change this security setting after you have activated your device, see the Wi-Fi > Secure Profile
of this document for changing security settings.

4. When connected to the Reliance Wi-Fi SER8189 you will ee the connection a ‘Reliance Wi-Fi SER8189 XXXX’ –
a hown below.
5. Before proceeding, en ure your wirele connection propertie are et to ‘Obtain an IP Address Auto atically.’

For Window XP and Vi ta 32-bit u er , you can right-click on your wirele network, elect propertie , then TCP/IP
propertie . For Window Vi ta 64-bit and Window 7 u er , you can click on ‘View Statu ’ a hown below.

For MAC users: Ensure your wireless connection set as ‘Using DHCP” as shown below.

6. Next, open your web brow er to htt ://192.168.5.1. Thi will bring you to the web u er interface of the Reliance
Wi-Fi SER8189.

Device Activation (Windows)
If your device ha not been activated at time of purcha e, you mu t activate now.
Click Login button on the top right of the web u er interface.
You will be prompted to enter your u ername and pa word.
The default U ername and Pa word i admin/admin.

See Advanced > Manage ent > Account of thi document for changing the
default U ername and Pa word.
Go to Advanced > Manage ent > Activation for device activation.
Click Activate button.
ote.
During the activation, lease do not switch off your device
or close the web user interface.
If the error me age i prompted a hown (Activation Failed),
Plea e contact your ervice provider.
Device Activation (Mac Users Only)
1. Go to Airport Icon at the right upper corner of de ktop tap
menu and click to open.

2. Choo e “Open Network Preference ” on the drop-down menu and elect “Reliance Wi-Fi SER8189 XXXX” of
your Wi-Fi network and apply it.
Open your web brow er to htt ://192.168.5.1. Thi will bring you to the web u er interface of the Reliance Wi-Fi
SER8189.
Click Login button. You will be prompted to enter your u ername and pa word. The default U ername and
Pa word i admin/admin.
Go to Advanced > Manage ent > Activation for device activation.

Below are the Wi-Fi detection guide for 3 different ver ion of Linux OS - ‘Fedora12’, ‘Ubuntu10.04’ and
‘CentOS5.5’
Fedora12
1. Go to icon at the right upper corner of de ktop menu and click to open.
2. Select “Reliance Wi-Fi SER8189 XXXX” of your Wi-Fi network and apply it.
(If thi SSID doe not appear, then click ‘More network ’.)
3. The default ecurity for the Reliance Wi-Fi SER8189 i WEP 64-bit. The
default ecurity key i “12345”. Enter the key to continue connecting to the
Reliance Wi-Fi SER8189.

Plea e en ure your wirele connection et a “Automatically obtain IP addre etting with DHCP” by going
through Syste -> Ad inistration -> Network -> (Network Configuration Window, choose ‘Devices’ tab, double
click Wireless) -> (Wireless Device Configuration Window, choose DHCP, Click OK)

1. Go to Applications -> Accessories -> Ter inal. Command ‘iwlist eth1 scan’

3. (Network Configuration Window, choose ‘Devices’ tab, select wireless profile, click ‘Activate’ button and ‘Yes’
and ‘OK’)
Your PC/Laptop has detected Reliance Wi-Fi SER8189. Follow the co on procedure below.

4. Open your web brow er and enter http://192.168.5.1 into the addre window.
5. Click Login button on the right top of the brow er. The default ID and Pa word i admin/admin.

The Browser Interface and Settings
1. Open your Web brow er and enter htt ://192.168.5.1 into the addre window.
The brow er interface will open.
Your Reliance Wi-Fi SER8189 u e a brow er interface to configure the device.
The brow er interface let you:
View the tatu of a pect of your network.

Set up Activation, Internet Profile, WEP or WPA ecurity, MAC filtering, Port Filtering and Port Forwarding
Set up a hot pot to allow a maximum of five connection to your device without having to hare your network
name and network key.
Ho e
The Home creen i the fir t creen you ee after logging in to the brow er interface. It i the main point of entry
for all your work in the brow er interface. The menu bar run horizontally along the top of the brow er interface.
It how how many u er or Wi-Fi embedded device are connected. It al o di play information about your
device’ connection trength and battery level.
CDMA
The CDMA menu allow you to et your authentication, Internet profile, network option and Internet connection
information.
Status
Click Connect to connect to your network.
The Reliance Wi-Fi SER8189 come pre-configured with the information required to connect to the network.
It will not normally require any additional configuration to the ba ic etting unle you are u ing the device
behind a corporate firewall, and thi may require the appropriate proxy erver etting to be modified.
It di play the following information:
Number of byte received and tran mitted
Duration of the current connection
The device’ IP addre and netma k
Gateway IP addre
DNS erver IP addre

Internet Profile
Internet Profile menu allow you to add / edit / delete your Profile name.
Configuration
Auto Connection Enable: The device will be connect to the CDMA network automatically when it i turned on.
Hybrid: Device will operate in dual mode with Broadband+ and High Speed 1x periodically depending on network
trength
High Speed 1x: Device will operate only in High Speed 1x mode
Broadband+ : Device will operate only in Broadband+ mode

The Network menu allow you to et domain name of the wirele brow er interface and DHCP (Dynamic Ho t
Configuration Protocol)
Router Address
The wirele brow er interface’ default URL addre i http://CDMA_AP.hot pot.
The addre can be u ed in tead of IP addre (192.168.5.1) at your convenience.
The URL addre al o can be changed.
