RACK INSTALLATION GUIDE 3
Rack Installation Guide
These instructions describe how to install Series 250, 550, 1050, 2050; models 3000, 3010, 5000, 5010; and
models 3020, 3520, 5520, 6020, 6120, 9200 in a standard Telco-type rack. It contains the following sections:
“Overview,” next
“Rack Installation Guidelines” on page 4
“Required Tools and Equipment” on page 5
“Mounting Series 250 and 550 to a Rack” on page 5
“Mounting Series 1050 and 2050 to a Rack” on page 6
“Mounting Models 3000, 3010, 5000, and 5010 to a Rack” on page 11
“Mounting Models 3020, 3520, 5520, 6020, 6120, and 9200 to a Rack” on page 14
CAUTION: All 3U systems must be mounted to a four-post rack; they cannot be mounted to a two-post rack.
NOTE: 3U Series xx50 systems are equipped with pre-installed rails, use standard installation procedures to install in
a rack.
NOTE: For rack installation instructions describing 520, 1020, 1520, and 2020 systems see the documentation enclosed
with these products. The documentation enclosed with these systems describes how to standard mount orcenter mount
1U xx20 systems in a two or four-post rack.
IMPORTANT: Model 50, 100, 200, 250, 300 and 550 systems are designed for the desktop. If you install these systems
in a rack do not place objects on top of the system; it causes restricted airflow and can damage the system.
IMPORTANT: Series xx10 systems are equipped with pre-installed rails, use standard installation procedures to install
in a rack.

4- RACK INSTALLATION GUIDE
Overview
Depending on your order, some systems require that the inner rails be attached to the chassis before they
can be installed to the rack.
Square-Hole Post Adaptor
Rack cabinets may have square or circular holes in the vertical posts. If necessary, using the included
adaptor, you can convert the square post holes to circular holes to accommodate standard screws.
To convert a square-hole post to fit a standard screw
Press together the top and bottom of the square-hole post adaptor and push it into the square hole on
the rack post.
Figure 1. Installing Square-Hole Post Adaptor
Short Rack Adaptors
Your system ships with standard brackets for racks with a depth of 28 to 33 inches (71.1 to 83.8 cm). Short
rack adaptors are provided to accommodate racks with a shorter rack depth. The short rack adaptors fit
racks with a depth of 17 to 28 inches (43.2 to 71.1 cm). For information on installing short rack adaptors see,
“To mount the short rack adaptors to the outer rails” on page 17.
Rack Installation Guidelines
Prior to installing the system in a rack, adhere to the following rack installation guidelines:
Ensure that there is adequate airflow in the rack. Improper installation or restricted airflow can
damage the equipment.
The rack cannot have solid or restricted airflow doors. You must use a mesh door on the front and back
of the rack or remove the doors to ensure adequate airflow to the system.
The system produces front-to-back cooling airflow that requires an unobstructed airflow to the fan
housing. Do not mount the system near other electronic devices that produce back-to-front airflow.
You must leave at least 1U of vertical space between each system you install in a rack.
Installing components in a rack without the front and side stabilizers can cause the rack to tip over.
Always install rack stabilizers before you install components in a rack.

RACK INSTALLATION GUIDE 5
The rack width and depth must allow for proper serviceability and cable management.
Make sure the rack is properly secured to the floor or ceiling.
Always load the rack from the bottom up. Load the heaviest component in the rack first.
Make sure the rack is level and stable before pulling a component out of the rack.
Do not move racks by yourself; a minimum of two people are needed to move a rack.
Required Tools and Equipment
You need the following tools and equipment to mount the system to a rack:
A standard Telco-type rack
A standard Phillips-head screwdriver
The enclosed screw-kit
The enclosed short rack adaptors (if needed)
The enclosed square-hole post converter (if needed)
If your system is missing any components please contact Riverbed Technical Support for a replacement part
at http://www.riverbed.com.
Mounting Series 250 and 550 to a Rack

Mounting Models 3020, 3520, 5520, 6020, 6120, and 9200 to a
Rack
You must install the inner rails to the chassis before you install the outer rails and mount the system to a
rack. Before installing the inner rails to the chassis:
Unplug the AC power cords.
Remove all external devices and connectors.
To mount the inner rails to the chassis
1. In each rail assembly, locate the inner rail and the outer rail.
2. Press the locking tab to release the inner rail from its locking position and pull out the inner rail from
the rail assembly. The inner rails are installed on the chassis and the outer rails are installed on the rack.
Figure 15. Releasing the Inner Rail

14 - RACK INSTALLATION GUIDE
3. Locate the five rail buttons on each side of the chassis and the five corresponding holes on each of the
inner rails. (One end of the hole is larger than the other end of the hole.)
Figure 16. Locating the Five Chassis Buttons and Rail Holes
4. Align the larger end of each hole against its corresponding button. To place the rail on the chassis, push
the rail holes into their corresponding chassis buttons.
5. After the rail is placed on the chassis, pull the rail forward until the rail buttons lock into the small ends
of the corresponding holes.
6. Secure the rail to the chassis with a screw. Repeat the above steps to install the other rail on the chassis.
Figure 17. Securing the Rail to the Chassis
Mounting the Outer Rails to a Rack
After you have installed the inner rails on the chassis, you are ready to install the outer rail assemblies to
the rack.
The system ships with the following equipment to accommodate different rack depths:

RACK INSTALLATION GUIDE 15
Standard Brackets. For rack depths of 28 to 33 inches (71.1 to 83.8 cm)
Short Rack Adaptors. For rack depths of 17 to 28 inches (43.2 to 71.1 cm)
IMPORTANT: The system produces front-to-back cooling airflow that requires an unobstructed airflow to the fan
housing. Do not mount the system near other electronic devices that produce back-to-front airflow.
To mount standard brackets to the outer rails
1. In the package, locate a pair of front (short) and rear (long) brackets. The brackets are marked with Up/
Front arrows (front) and Up/Rear arrows (rear).
2. Secure the front (short) bracket (marked with the Up/Front arrows) to the outer rail with two screws.
Figure 18. Securing Brackets to the Outer Rail
3. Locate the two buttons on the outer rail and attach the rear (long) bracket to it by sliding the opening of
the rear rail through the button.
4. Measure the depth of your four-post rack and adjust the length of the rails accordingly.
5. Repeat the steps to install the other outer rail to the chassis.

16 - RACK INSTALLATION GUIDE
To mount the short rack adaptors to the outer rails
1. Slide the standard bracket forward so that the larger end of the hole is aligned with the rail button and
pull the bracket off the rail. (One end of the hole is larger than the other end.)

4. Reposition the bracket so that it is the correct depth to fit your rack.
5. Repeat the steps to install the other short rack adaptor.
To mount the system on a rack
1. Secure both outer rail assemblies to the rack with the screws and washers.
Figure 22. Securing Outer Rails
2. After the rail assemblies are securely installed to the rack, slide the system into the assemblies.
CAUTION: Do not lift the system alone; use two people to lift the system.
