2.2 Beforeusingthemower
•Studycarefullytheinstructionsgiveninthismanual.
•Familiariseyourselfwiththemower’soperationandhowtouseit
properly.
•Neverallowotherpeople‐especiallychildren‐tousethemachineif
theyhavenotreadandfullyunderstoodtheseoperatinginstructions.
•Ifthemoweristobeusedbysomeoneotherthantheowner,ensure
thattheyhavebeengiventhisinstructionmanualtoreadfirst.
•Neverremovelabelsorsafetydevicesfromthemachine.
•Checkthatallpartsandcomponentsaresecurelyfixedandattached.
•Ensurethatthecuttingbladeanditsfastenerareingoodconditionand
properlysecured.Cuttingedgesshouldnotbebluntordamaged.If
necessary,removeandsharpenorreplacetheblade.Beforedoingthis,
alwaysturnofftheengineandremovethecapfromthesparkplug.
•Neverusethemowerwhenitsprotectivegrille,oranyothersafety
deviceorguard,isdamagedormissing.
•Checktheoillevelbeforeeachmowingsession.
•Neveralterthebasicsettingsoftheengineanddonotoverspeed.
•Beforemowing,checkthecuttingareaandremoveanysolidobjectsor
debris(egstonesortwigs)thatmaybepickedupandthrownoutby
themower,injuringbystandersanddamagingthecuttingbladeand
engine.
2.3Whenusingthemower
•Mowonlyingood,cleardaylightconditions.
•Besuretocomplywithanylocalornationalregulationsgoverning
whenmowingmaybecarriedout.
•Donotusethemachineifyouarefeelingtired,unwell,haveconsumed
alcoholorareundertheinfluenceofmedicines/drugs.
•Nevermowwearinglooseclothing/shoesorwithbarefeet.Always
wearlongtrousersandsturdy,non‐slipfootwear.
•Starttheenginecarefullyinaclear,unobstructedareafollowingthe
instructionsforuse.Keephandsandfeetwellawayfromturningblade.
•Neverleavetheenginerunningunattendedorinanenclosedarea
wheredangerouscarbonmonoxidefumescanaccumulate.

•Themower’soperatorisresponsibleforthesafetyofotherslocatedin
theworkingareaofthemachine.Nevercutthegrasswhileothers,
especiallychildrenorpets,arenearby.Doingsocanheightentheriskof
injurycausedbystonesorotherdebrisbeingejectedfromthemachine
whenmowing.
•Neverrunwhenusingthemower.Walksteadilyguidingthemachine
carefullyovertheground.
•Thelengthofthehandlebarsprovidesaminimumrecommendedsafe
distancefrommovingandhotpartsofthemachine.Respectthis
distance.
•Neverputhandsorfeetbeneaththecutterdeckorneartoanyother
movingparts.
•Keepclearofallareasofthemachinefromwhichdebrismaybeejected.
•Whenmowing,avoidobstaclessuchasmolehills,stumps,kerbs,posts
andotherobstructionswhichcannotbecutbythebladeandmay
damagethecuttingsystem.Donotworkclosetoditchesoron
soft/unstablegroundoranyotherareaswherethereisriskofrollover.
•Ifyouneedtoattendtooradjustthemachine,alwaysstoptheengine
andremovethecapfromthesparkplug..
•Ifthemachinehastobeliftedortransported,alwaysstoptheengine
andremovethecapfromthesparkplug.Neverliftortiltthemower
duringstartingorwhenthebladeisturning.
•Usearamporgethelpfromasuitablefitandhealthypersonwhen
lifting,loadingorunloadingthemower.
•Toavoidriskoffire,neverstartthemowerwherefuelhasbeenspilled.
•Beespeciallycarefulwhenturningwiththemowerandwhenpullingit
towardsyou.
•Maintainawell‐balancedpositiononslopinggroundandnevermowon
steepslopes.Beespeciallycarefulwhenchangingdirectiononslopes.
Alwaysmowacrossaslope,neverupanddown.
•Toavoidtheriskofseriousburns,nevertouchahotengineoranyofits
partsunlesswearingsuitableprotectivegloves.
•Observeanylocalornationalregulationsrelatingtotheuseofengine‐
poweredoutdoorequipment.
2.4Afterusingthemower

•Allowtheenginetocoolbeforestoringthemowerinanenclosedarea.
•Neverstoreamowerwithfuelinitstankinanareawherepetrolfumes
maycomeintocontactwithaflameorspark.Topreventfirerisk,keep
theexhaustandtheareaaroundthefueltankfreeofgrass,leavesand
oil.
•Ifyouneedtodrainthefueltank,doitoutdoorsusingpurpose‐
designedfuelsuctionpump.
•Removegrass,greaseandoilfromthemowerbeforestoringit.
•Formaximumsafety,replacewornordamagedpartsimmediately.
•UseonlygenuineoriginalpartsorthoseapprovedbySANLIUK.
3.UsageGuidelines
Makinganyunauthorisedmodificationstothemower(iemodificationsthat
areunauthorisedbySANLIUKand/oranappointedSANLIdealer)canmake
themachineunsafeandmayleadtosevereinjuriesduringuse.SANLIUKcan
acceptnoliabilityformachinefailureorpersonalinjuryifthemachine’s
ownerand/oroperatordoesnotcomplywiththisnoticeand/orwithnational
safetyregulationsandguidelinesregardingtheuseofengine‐powered
outdoorequipment.

3.12Fillingthemower’senginewithoil
Fortransportreasons,yournewmower’senginedoesnotcontainoilwhen
despatchedfromthefactory.Beforeuse,ensurethatthemowercontainsoil.
WARNING:Neverruntheenginewithoutoilevenforashortperiod.
•AlwaysuseahighqualityoilofAPISF
standardsandSAE30or15W40viscosity.
•Whenfillingtheenginewithoil,position
themoweronafirm,levelsurfaceUnscrew
theoilfillercapandremovethedipstick
(fig.5).
•Slowlypourintheoil.Thecorrectcapacity
oftheengine’soilsumpis650ml.
•Insertthedipstickuptothefillerneckbut
donotscrewitin.Removethedipstickand
readtheoillevelbyholdingthedipstick
horizontally.
•Theoillevelmustreachthemaximummarkonthedipstick(fig.6)
•Iftoomuchoilhasbeenaddedtotheengine,theexcesscanbedrained
outbytippingthemowerontoitssidewiththeairfilterand
carburettoruppermost.
NOTE: THE OIL FILLER CAP MUST BE SCREWED IN FULLY BEFORE STARTING
THE ENGINE. NEVER REMOVE THE FILLER CAP WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING.

3.13Fillingthefueltank
WARNING:Petrolishighlyinflammable.Alwayshandlefuelwithextreme
caretoavoidriskofburns,fireorexplosion.Thefueltankshouldbefilled
beforestartingtheengine.Yourmower’senginerunsonpetrolalone‐donot
addoiltothepetrol.
Alwaysuseunleadedpetrolofaminimum95RON.Buyonlythequantityof
fuelthatyouplantouseinamonth.Nevertransportandstorepetrolother
thaninacontainersuitableforthepurpose,approvedandlabelled
accordingly.
•Alwaysrefueloutdoors,neverinanenclosedspaceornearanaked
flameorheatsource.Neversmokewhilefillingthefueltank.
•Donotunscrewthetankcapwhentheengineisrunningorwhenthe
mowerishot.
•Toaddfuel,unscrewthefuelfillercap.
•Slowlypourthefuelintothetankusingthe
fuelcontainer’sspout(fig.7)orafunnel.
•Thetank’scapacityisabout1litre.Avoid
spillagesbynotoverfillingthetank.Leave
about13mmspacebeneaththethreaded
collartoallowforfuelexpansion.
•Iffuelshouldoverflow,donotstarttheengine.Movethemoweraway
fromtheplaceofspillageandcarefullywipedownthemower.Any
attemptatstartingshouldbeavoideduntilpetrolvapourshave
completelygone.
•Replacesecurelythecapsonthefueltankandthefuelcontainerand
placethelatterinasecureplaceawayfromheatordirectsunlight.
•Beforeeachmowing,visuallyinspecttheconditionofthemower’sfuel
tankanditscap,thefueldeliverypipeandthefuelfilter.
Ifafuelleakisseenorsuspected,donotstarttheengine.Drainthefuel
tankusingafuelsuctionpumpandimmediatelycontactanapproved
SANLIUKservicedealerforadvice.
3.14AdjustingtheCuttingHeight

Forbestresults,alwaysadjustthecuttingheightofyourmowertosuitthe
mowingconditionsanddonottrytoremovetoomuchgrassinonepass.
Adjusting the cutting height of model LS40 is carried out wheel by wheel.
CAUTION:Neveradjustthecuttingheightwhentheengineisrunning.Always
removethesparkplugcapbeforemakinganyadjustments.
•Removetheprotectivewheeltrimtoaccessthesecuringfastener(fig.8).
•Usingthekeyprovidedwiththemower,unscrewthewheel(fig.9).
•Positionthewheelinoneofthethreeheightpositionsprovidedand
retightenthefastenerfirmly(fig.10).
•Replacethetrimtoprotectthewheelandfastener.
•Repeattheaboveoperationonthethreeotherwheels,ensuringthey
areallatthesameheight.
3.2Usingthemower
Beforestartingandusingthemower,checkforthepresenceandoperationof
safetydevices.Also,checktheconditionofthebladeanditssecuringbolt.If
necessary,replaceorrepairdefectiveitems.UseonlygenuineSANLIpartsor
partsthathavebeenapprovedbySANLIUK.
Ifpossible,mowonlywhenthegrassisdry.Ifthegrassiswetorexcessively
long,performtwocuttingpasses.Makethefirstpassatmaximumcutting
heighttoavoidoverloadingthemower.Thesecondpassshouldbemadeat
therequiredfinishedheight.Ifgrassbuildsupbeneaththemower’schassis,
stoptheengineandremovethesparkplug’scapbeforecleaningthe
undersideofthecutterdeck.

•Beforestartingtheengine,pleasereadthoroughlytheinstructions
regardingsafeuseofthemower(seepages5–7).
•Slidethethrottlelevertoandfroseveraltimestoensurethatitis
movingsmoothlyandcorrectly.
•CheckthatthefueltapisintheONposition(fig.11)andthatthe
engine’soilleveliscorrect(seeparagraph3.12).
•Startthemowerinaclear,levelarea.Donotstarttheengineifthe
cuttingbladeisrestingonroughanduncutgrassasthismaycause
difficultiesatstart‐up.
•Foracoldstart,movethethrottlelevertothepositionmarked:
•Forahotstart,movethelevertothepositionmarked:
•Standbehindthehandlebars.Movetheoperatorcontrollever
positionedinfrontofthehandlebarsrearwardssothattheleveris
restingagainstthehandlebars(fig.12).Takeholdofthestarterhandle
firmlywiththeotherhand.
•Pullbackthestarteruntilyoufeelresistanceandthenpullthehandle
firmlyandbrisklytoturntheengine(fig.13).
•Repeattheaboveprocedureasnecessaryuntiltheenginestarts.
•Whenstartingfromcold,graduallymovethethrottleleverto
•thefullthrottleposition(asshownright)afterafewmoments
ofrunning.
WARNING:Thecuttingbladeturnswhentheengineisbeingstarted.
3.22Stoppingthemower

Tominimisepossibleriskofaccidents,theengineofyourSANLIlawnmoweris
coupledtoanoperatorcontrol.Whentheoperatorcontrolleverisreleased,
itreturnsimmediatelytoitsrestpositionandtheengineisautomatically
turnedoff.
Tostopthemower,movethethrottlelevertoitsstoppositionand
releasetheoperatorcontrollever.Theengineandthebladewillstop
turningautomatically.
Ifthereisabuild‐upofgrassbeneaththechassis,stoptheengine,removethe
sparkplug’scapandwaituntiltheenginehascooledbeforeclearingthegrass.
3.3Cleaning,storage,transportationandmaintenance
Beforeworkingonthecuttingsystemofthemachine,switchofftheengine
andremovethesparkplug’scap.
3.31Cleaningthemower
•Cutgrassisdamp.Regularcleaningaftereachusewillensurebetter
functioningofthemowerandreducetheriskofcorrosionorseizure.
•Havingfinishedmowing,allowtheenginetocoolthenremove
accumulatedgrassclippingsfromandaroundtheenginewithabrush.
•Cleanthegrasscollectionbagannuallywithabrushorgentlesprayof
water.
•Disconnectthesparkplug’scapandtiltthemoweronitssidewiththe
airfilterandcarburettoruppermost.
•Removeanyremainingcutgrassfromthecuttingsystemwithascraper
andabrush.
•Repositionthemowerontoitsfourwheels.
•Donotuseapressurewasherorhotwatertocleanthemower.Be
carefultoavoidsoakingpartssuchastheengine,aircleaner,wheel
bearingsandmetalfastenings.Dryoffthemachinebeforestoringby
leavingitrunningforafewminutesonaflat,clearsurfacetoprevent
corrosionorseizure.
3.32Storingthemower

Storeyourmowerinadry,well‐ventilatedarea,awayfromflames,sparks
orheatsources.Ifthestorageareaisaccessibletochildren,immobilisethe
machinebydisconnectingthesparkplug’scap.
Storingthemowerbeneathatarpaulinorsimilarcoverisnot
recommendedasitmaycauseabuild‐upofcondensationresultingin
corrosion.
Extendedshutdownandwinterstorage
Thoroughlycleanthemower.Ideally,runtheengineoutdoorsuntilthefuel
tankisempty.Alternatively,emptyanyremainingfuelusingafuelsuction
pump.TurnthefueltaptotheOFFposition(fig13).
Disposeofdiscardedfuelsafelyandresponsibly,rememberingthatpetrol
vapourscancauseexplosionorfire.Runtheengineuntilanyremainingfuel
isconsumed.Allowtheenginetocool.Checktheconditionandcleanliness
oftheaircleaner(seepage17).
Removethesparkplugfromtheengineandpouratablespoonofengineoil
intothecylinder.Gentlypullthestarterropeseveraltimestoturnoverthe
engine,distributingtheoiltoprotectthecylinderoverwinter.Replaceand
tightenthesparkplug.
Atthestartofthenewseason
Removethesparkplugandgentlycleanoffanycarbondepositsfromthe
tipwithasmallcopperwirebrush,finishingoffwithpetrol.Allowthespark
plugtodry.Pullthestarterropeseveraltimestoexpelexcessoilfromthe
cylinder.Replaceandtightenthesparkplug.Fillthefueltankwith
unleadedpetrol(95RONminimum)andmovethetaptotheONposition.
Turnovertheengineuntilitstarts(see3.21)
Beforetransportingthemower
Thoroughlycleanthemower.Emptythefueltank
usingasuctionpump.TurnthefueltaptoitsOFF
position(fig.14).Disposeofdiscardedfuelsafely
andresponsibly,rememberingthatpetrolvapours
cancauseexplosionorfire.Runtheengineuntilany
remainingfuelisconsumed.Allowtheenginetocool.
Removethegrasscollectionbag.Loosenthequick
release(fig.15)andfolddownthetopsectionofthe
handlestakingcarenottobendthecables.
Toavoidscratchingthemower,insertcorrugatedcardboardorsimilar

paddingbetweentheupperandlowerhandlebarsandtheengine.
Duetothemower’sweight,userampsorseekassistancewhenliftingor
loadingthemower.
3.33Mowermaintenance
Cuttingsystem
Beforeandaftereachmowingsession,checkthattheblade,itsattachment
boltsanddriveshaftarenotdamagedorexcessivelyworn.Nevertryto
straightenabentblade.Replaceadamaged,wornorbentbladeassoonas
possible.UseonlygenuineSANLIpartsorthoseapprovedbySANLIUK.
Excessivevibrationwhenmowingisagoodindicationofaproblemwith
thecuttingsystem.
WARNING:Vibrationfromabentordamagedbladecancausecostlydamage
tothemower.Workingwithanexcessivelywornbladewastesfuelandcan
leadtoinjuryifthebladebecomesdetachedfromthemachine.
Sharpeningtheblade
Forbestmowingresults,havetheedgessharpenedandthebladebalanced
atleastonceayearbyaspecialistservicedealeroragent.
Removingtheblade
Wearappropriateprotectiveglovestopreventpossibleinjurywhen
handlingtheblade.Disconnectthesparkplugcapandtiltthemoweronits
sidewithairfilterandcarburettorsideuppermost.
Holdingthebladefirmlyinonehand,useaspannerorsockettoloosenthe
bladescrew.
Mountingtheblade
Wearappropriateprotectiveglovestopreventpossibleinjurywhen
handlingtheblade.Disconnectthesparkplugcapandtiltthemoweronits
sidewithairfilterandcarburettorsideuppermost.
Checkthatallcomponents(theblade,key,bladeholder,screwsand
washers).arepresent,cleanandingoodcondition.
Positionthebladeonitssupportwiththecoolingfinsfacingtheengine.
Checkthecorrectalignmentandmatchingofpadswiththeblade.The
blademustbepositionedpreciselyonitsstand.
Tightenthescrewsconnectingallofthecomponents.Makeafinalvisual

checkthatallpartsarepresentandalignedbeforetighteningthefixingbolt
veryfirmlywithawrenchwhileholdingthebladefirmlyinonehand(NB
wearsuitablegloves).
Sparkplug
Checkthesparkpluginitiallyafterthefirstfive
hoursofmoweruse.Thereafter,maintenanceof
thesparkplugshouldtakeplaceevery25hours.
Removethesparkplugcap(fig.16)usingarotary
motionandthenremovethesparkplugwiththe
wrenchprovided(fig.17).
Cleanoffanycarbondepositsusingacopper
brushandchecktheelectrodegapwithafeeler
gauge(thegapshouldbe≈0.7mm).
Replaceandretightentheservicedsparkplugand
replacethecap.
Ifthesparkplugiswornordamaged,replacewithanewsparkplugofthe
sameorsuitabletypefortheengine.Ifindoubt,contactaSANLIUK
appointeddealer.
AirFilter
Anairfilterinpoorconditionwillreducethe
performanceandlifeoftheenginewhilemaking
ithardertostart.Regularchecksaretherefore
essential,especiallywhenusingthemowerin
dustyconditions.Checkandcleantheairfilter
every25hoursofuseormoreofteniftheengine
isusedinadustyenvironment.
Removetheairboxlid(fig.18)andcarefullyremovethefoamfilter
cartridge.Cleanthecartridgeinasmallbowlofwarmwatercontaininga
fewdropsofwashing‐upliquiduntilitisperfectlycleanandfreefromall
tracesofgreaseanddust.Rinsethefiltercartridgeincleanwaterandthen
squeezegentlytoremovemostofthewater.Letitairdryuntilitis
completelydry.
WARNING:Nevercleanthefoamcartridgeinpetrol,whitespiritorother
solvents.Theseproductswilldegradethefiltercartridge.
Cleanthecoverandinsideoftheairboxwithacleanlint‐freecloth.Applya
uniformlayerofoiltotheoutsideofthecartridgefilterwithabrush(youcan

usecleanengineoilforthis).Insertthefiltercartridgeintoitshousingand
replacetheairboxlid,ensuringthateachcomponentisinplaceandproperly
installed.
Ifthefiltercartridgeisdamagedorisverydirty,replaceitusingagenuine
SANLIpart.
WARNING:Donottwistthecartridgetocleanfoam,asyoucoulddamageit.

Themaintenanceofafoampre‐filterisidenticaltothatofafoamcartridge
filter,asdescribedabove.Thecartridgefilterpapershouldbecleanedwitha
vacuumcleaner.Ifitisdirtyorcontaminatedwithoilorpetrol,replaceit.
Cleanthecoverandinsideoftheairboxwithacleancloth.Evenlyapplya
thinlayerofoiltotheoutsideofthecartridgefilterwithabrush(youcanuse
cleanengineoilforthis).Replacethefiltercartridgeinitshousingandthen
replacethelidoftheairbox,ensuringthateachcomponentisinplaceand
properlyinstalled.
EngineOil
Checkingtheoillevel
Positionthemoweronafirm,levelsurface.Unscrew
theoilleveldipstick(fig.18)andwipedry.Insertthe
dipstickuntilitreachesthefillerneck,butdonot
screwin.Removethedipstickandchecktheoillevel
holdingthedipstickhorizontal.Theoillevelshould
bebetweentheminimumandmaximumoillevel
marksonthedipstick(fig.19).Addoilifnecessary
andrepeattheabovecheckingprocess.Runningthe
enginewithoutoilorwithtoolittleoilcancauseseriousenginedamage.
Changingtheoil
Thefirstoilchangeshouldbecarriedoutafterthefirst5hoursofmoweruse.
Thereafter,changetheoilafterevery25hours’useoratleastonceayear.
Leavetheenginerunningoutdoorsforseveralminutestowarmtheoiland
makeitmorefluid.Warning:Partsoftheenginewillbecomeveryhotandcan
causesevereburns.
Removethesparkplugcapandunscrewtheoilleveldipstick.Placeasuitable
containerbeneaththemower’soilfillerpipeandtiltthemowerontoitsside

withtheairfilterandcarburettoruppermost.Allowtheoiltodrain
completelyintothecontainer.Returnthemowerontoitsfourwheelsandfill
theenginewithnewoilasdescribedinsection3.12
