Introduction
TheuseofaSIM‐PmodulechangesasimpletypePphotocellthathasadetectionfeatureintoa
completescannerwithdifferentoutputs,andalsomaintainsallthefeaturesofaphotocell.Itislike
gettingasophisticatedphotocellandahigh‐techscanneratthesametime.
ThetypePsensorheadisanareaphotocellmadeupofanemitterandreceiver.Thesensordetects
objectsassmallas0.1inch(2.5mm).Theemitterandthereceivercanbemountedupto100feet
(30m)apart.TheSIM‐Pmodulehasmultipleoutputs:aPNPcontact,aNPNcontact,anRS‐232serial
communicationport,anRS‐422serialcommunicationportandtwoanalog4‐20mAoutputs.
Dimensionoftheobjectpresentinthefieldofviewanditspositionareavailablethroughtheanalog
andtheseriallinkoutputs.TheNPNandPNPoutputsareusedforthepresenceofanobject.The
modulealsohasamembranekeypad,a32alphanumericdisplay(2x16)andLEDtoshowdifferent
status.
Theheadisaclosedenclosurewithamilitary,quick‐disconnectconnector.Therail‐mountSIM‐P
moduleissuppliedwiththeemitterandreceiver.Allparameterscanbedirectlyprogrammedwith
theSensorInterfaceModuleforPhotocell.Theemitterandthereceiveraredirectlyconnectedtothe
SIM‐P.
A32‐character,alphanumericdigitaldisplayshowseachparameterandavailableconfiguration.The
SIM‐Pisconfiguredusingan8‐keymembrane.Statusofeachcellofthereceiver(blocked,cancelled;
notblocked)canbeseenonthereceiverheadthroughitswindow,orontheSIM‐Premotedisplay.
Connectionoftheemitterandreceiverissimpleusingfourcoloredwiresandeachcolorisidentified
directlyontheterminal’sconnectorlocatedontheSIM‐P.Twoterminalsarepresent,oneforthe
receiverandonefortheemitter.Theseconnectorsarenotdedicatedastheycaneitheraccept
emitterorreceiver.Theonlyrestrictionistohaveanemitterunitandareceiverunitwiththesame
lengthconnectedtotheSIM‐P.
Mechanical,electricalorinterconnectiondrawingsareavailableinAutoCADformat.Ifrequiredplease
contactourtechnicalsupportteam.

SIM-P module
TheSIM‐PmoduleisthecontrollerfortheTypePsensorheads.Allparametersetupsand
configurationsaremadewiththeSIM‐Pmodule.Theemitterandthereceiverareconnecteddirectly
totheterminalsonthisunit.Usingthedisplayandthemembranekeypad,onecanviewandchange
setupsorparameters.Allofthesevaluesarekeptinaflashmemory.Atpowerup,allprevious
configurationsareinmemoryandthephotocellcontinuestoworkaspreviouslyprogrammed.A
seriesofLEDsindicatethestateofeachcelllocatedinthereceiver.Thisremoteviewingstateisuseful
fortroubleshootingtheunitwhenthereceiverisnotmountedinaneasilyaccessiblelocation.The

SIM-P module connections
Powersupply
Anotherconnectionisthepower.Theterminalsarelocatedonthe
bottomrightofthemodule.ThePowerwordisvisiblywritteninfront
oftheterminal.Theredandtheblackcolorindicaterespectively
positive(24Voltsdc)andnegativeterminals(0Vdc).A24Vdc
Power
supplyisrequiredforthemoduleandissuppliedbythecustomer.This
supplyisdirectlyconnectedtotheSIM‐P.The15Vdcsupplyneeded
fortheemitterandreceiverismadeinternallybytheSIM‐Pmodule.
Headconnection
TheemitterandthereceiverhavetobeconnectedtotheSIM‐Pmodulefornormaloperation.Each
ofthemhasa4‐wirecable.Twowiresareforpowerandtwoareforcommunication.The
communicationisCAN‐BUSlevel,butdoesnotsupporttheCAN‐BUSstandardprotocol.Thesensor
usesonlythehardwarefeaturesoftheCAN‐BUS.Thewirecolorsare:

Theemittercableandreceivercableareconnectedtotheterminal
locatedatthetoprightsideoftheSIMmodule,regardlessofwhich
terminalisused.TheSIM‐Pmodulerecognizeswhichisconnectedat
thefirstterminalblockandwhichisconnectedtotheother.Atpower
up,themodulecommunicateswiththereceiverandemitterand
determinesatwhichlocationeachisconnected.Onthetoprightside
ofthemodule,aLEDatRECpositionwilllightupifalinkisestablished
withthereceiver.AnotherLEDatEMpositionwillalsolightupwhen
thelinkisestablishedwiththeEmitter.Forthesystemtowork
correctly,oneneedstoconnectoneemitterandonereceiverofthe
samesize.Ifitisnotthecase,anerrormessagewillbedisplayed.

Theelectricalconnectionsareverysimpletomake.Onecanmakethemwithouttheneedofany
drawing.Oneachterminal,thecolorofeachwireisidentified.Justconnectthewiresattheposition
correspondingtotheircolor.Allwiresfromtheemitterhavetobeconnectedtoeitherterminalblock
location;thenconnectthereceiver’swiresontheunusedterminal.Visually,theconnectionswillbe
asshownontheright(bottomofthepreviouspage).
Photocelloutput
Whenapresenceisdetectedaccordingtothesetup(parameters),a
NPNandaPNPoutputareavailable.Bothareavailableatthesame
time.Theterminalsfortheconnectionarelocatedonthebottomof
themoduleontherightsideandareclearlyidentified.Eachofthem
hastwoterminals:OUTandCOM.TheOUTterminalistheswitching
outputandtheCOMisthecommonreferenceforthePNPorNPN.
SerialLink
Twoseriallinksareavailable.OneisanRS‐232andtheotherisan
RS‐422link.Onlyonecanbeusedtotransmitthedimensionandthe
position.Nothingwillbetransmittedontheotherseriallink.The
selectionoftheactiveseriallinkismadewiththeparameterofthe
SIMmoduleandcanbedoneatanymoment.Pleasenotethatthe
RS‐422connectionandtheRS‐232connectionarenotlocatedonthe
sameterminalblock.
TheRS‐232terminalblockislocatedonthebottomcenterofthe
module.The0V,theRXandTXarethethreeterminalstobeused.
ThePNPINandthe+15Vterminalhavetostayunconnected.They
areusedwithadifferenttypeofsensorconnectedtotheSIM
module.
TheRS‐422terminalblockislocatedonthebottomleftsideofthe
module.OnlytheTX‐,TX+andthe0Varetobeconnected.Leavethe
otherunconnected.
RegardlessifyouhaveconnectedtheRx(RS‐232terminal)ortheRX+,
RX‐(RS‐422)accordingtothetypeofseriallink,themodulewillnever
checkforincomingcharacters.Infact,boththeseriallinksareunidirectionalandwillonlyoutput
information(andnevercheckifacharacteristransmittedtothemodule).

oneorgrouphasaspecificfunction.TheSIM‐Phasred,yellowandgreenLEDtohelpidentification.
BothreceiverandemitterheadsuseonlyredLEDs.

analogoutputs.At4mA,noLEDislight“on”.Assoonthatthevalueisgreaterthan4mA,thefirst

LED“on”canhavetwointensitylevels.AnLEDathalfintensityshowsanobstructedcellbutmeans
thataccordingtotheminimumdiameter,therearenotenoughconsecutiveLEDsobstructedto
activatetheoutput.Atotalof31LEDsispresent.Inlowresolutiononly16LEDsarefunctioning,one
ofeverytwoLED.Theotherstays"off"allthetime.Inmediumresolution,allthe31LEDsare
functioning.Incoarseresolution,eachLEDisassociatedwithtwoconsecutivecells.Whenacellis

BelowthepowerpresenceLED,tworowsofLEDsarelocatedon
eachsideofthecenterlineofthewindow.Whenacellis
obstructed,theequivalentLEDlocatedoneachsideofthiscellis
set“on”.Atotalof64LEDsarepresent.Accordingtothescan
precision,moreorlessLEDsareset“on”.Incoarseresolution,16
arefunctioning,inmediumresolution32and,inhighresolution,
all64LEDsarefunctioning.UnliketheSIM‐P’sLEDs,thehalf‐
intensityleveldoesnotexistinthereceivertoindicatethatthe
minimumdetectableobjecthasnotbeenreached.Ifthiswerethe
case,someLEDsare“on”,butthetwopresenceLEDsarenot“on”
indicatingthatthephotocelldetectssomethingthatislessthan
theminimumdetectabledimension.Whenacelliscancelled,the
correspondingLEDwillflash2timesperseconduntilareset
cancellationisperformed,orthecancellationisdisabled.

Display and membrane keypads
Thedisplayhas32alphanumericcharactersmountedintworowsof16characters.Whenthe
displayshowsinformation,thetwolinesareusedtodisplaythemessage.Whenthedisplayisused
toshowaparameter,thefirstlineinformsyouwhichoneoftheparametersisactuallydisplayed.In
thissituation,thesecondlineshowstheactualselectedvalueforthisspecificparameter.
Aselectedvaluehasanarrowoneachsideofthedisplay.Whenavalueisdisplayedwithoutthe
arrow,theseparametervaluesareavailable,butnotselectedatthistime.Toselectoneofthem
andmakethisvaluethenewactualsetupforaparameter,justmaintaintheenterkeyforone
second.Thearrowoneachsidewillappeartotellyouthenewselectedparameterisaccepted.
Atsomepoint,achoiceisnecessaryinordertocontinue.Whenthissituationoccurs,theF1andF2
buttonarethechoicesavailabletoyou.Intotal,eightkeysarepresentonthemembranekeypads.
Thesekeysare:

Protocol
ThetransmissionalwaysstartswithaLF(0x0A)andfinisheswithaCR(0x0D).Betweenthesetwo
delimiters,thedimension(4BCDASCIIbytes)andtheposition(4BCDASCIIbytes)arepresentinthe
sameorderasdescribedbelow.Ateachscan,thetransmittingbufferisemptied,andtheSIM

Emitter, receiver or SIM-P module swap: Useful information
Atanytime,onecanreplacetheemitter,thereceiverortheSIM‐Pmodule.Someofthese
replacementsaretransparentintheoperationofthephotocell,somearenot.Theparametersare
storedintheSIM‐Pmodule.Afterapowerup,theparametersarereadfromtheflashmemoryof
theSIM‐Pfornormaloperation.ThereceivercontainsamemorybackupoftheSIM‐P’sparameters.
Theparameterscanberetrievedifnecessary.Theemitterhasnomemorytostoreparameters.In
thefollowingparagraph,eachcomponentisdescribed.
Emitter
Theemittercanbereplacedwithoutanyinfluenceonthephotocelloperation.WhentheSIM‐P
detectsthereceiver,alltheactualparametersneededtooperatecorrectlyaresenttotheemitter.
Assoonastheemitterhasreceivedtheparameters,thephotocellstartstofunction.
Receiver
Anemittercanbereplacedwithoutanyinfluenceonthephotocelloperation.Thereceiverhowever
hasthebackupmemoryoftheSIM‐Pmodule.Whenyoumodifyit,theactualbackupisnolonger
available.IfyoureplacethereceiverandtheSIM‐Pmoduleatthesametime,youcannotoperate
thephotocellasitwasworkingbeforethechange.TrytoavoidreplacingthereceiverandtheSIM
duringthesamepowerdownoperation.ToupdatethebackupmemoryoftheSIM‐Pmodule
insidethenewreceiver,youneedtofollowoneofthesesteps:
ModifyoneparameterintheSIM‐Pmodule.Everytimeaparameterischanged,the
completememoryissenttothereceivermemoryforbackuppurposesautomatically.Any
changeofaparametermakesafullupdateinthereceivermemory.
Executethe“saveparameter”commandfromtheSIM‐Pcommandmenu.Thiscommand
willtakethedataintheSIM‐P’sparametermemoryandsenditdirectlytothereceiver’s
memorytoupdatethenewreceiver
SIM‐Pmodule
WhentheSIM‐Pmoduleisreplaced,theparameter’smemoryisgonewiththeoldSIM‐Pmodule.It
meansthatthephotocellwillnotworkasitwasworkingbeforetheSIM‐Pmoduleswap.Youcan,
however,retrievealloftheoldparametersfromthereceiverbydoingthefollowing:
Executethe“retrieve”commandfromthenewSIM‐Pmodule.Thiscommandmustbeexecuted
beforeanyparametersarechanged.Ifaparameterischangedfirst,youwillloseallthebackup
parametersavailableinthereceiverhead.

How to install or remove Sensor head with a bracket
Thesensorheadcanberemovedorinstalledonitsmountingbracketatanytime.Thecablecanbe
unpluggedatanytime.Inthefollowingparagraph,wewillconnectandun‐connectthecableswhen
thesensorisfixedontoitsmountingbracket,butthisstepcanbedoneinanysequenceandnot
necessarilyintheordershowninthefollowingprocedure.
Toremoveasensorfromitsmountingbracket,followthesesteps:
Removetheconnectorbyrotatingtheshellcounterclockwisedirectionby120

Unplugtheconnectorbypullingitdown(Picture2).
Grabonlythephotocell,withoutthebracket,andpushuptoreleasethebottomfromthe
bracket(Picture3).
Maintainthepressureandpullthebottompartofthephotocellawayfromthebracket.

Releasethepressureonthephotocellandremoveit(Picture5).

Toinstallasensoronitsbracket,followthesesteps:
Firmlyholdthesensorandinserttheslotofthetopcoverintothetoppartof
bracket.Thephotocellcanbemountedin3differentpositions:Rightside,
FrontorLeftside.Whenyoumountasensorontoitsbracket,youneedto
knowwhichmountingholeyouwillbeusing(Picture6).Whenitisdone
followthissequence:
Pushthesensorup.Thiswillforcetheretainingpartofthebrackettocomeout(spring
loaded)(Picture7).
