ThisinstructionisthemanualforinstallationanduseofSolarLordwaterHeaters.Itstateshowtoinstall,set‐
upandcheckthesystem.Italsoprovidesnecessarytechnicaldataandknowledgeofsolarhotwatersystem.
THEPRINCIPALOFOPERATION
Sinceevacuatedglasstubetechnologywasinverted,solarenergycanbechangedtoheatenergyefficientlyin
fourseasons.Solarexposurecanbeturnedtoheatregardlessambienttemperatureofthecollectors.Solar
LordcollectorsusingGermandesignforthetubingandSydneyUniversitycoatingtechnologyfortheabsorbing
surface.
Theinsideandoutsidetubesaremadefromextremelystrongborosilicateglasswhichareevacuatedand
fusedtogether.Thevacuumspacebetweentwoglasslayersformsexcellentinsulationtostoptheheatloss
fromtheinsidetotheoutside.Theoutsideoftheinnertubeiscoatedasurfacetoabsorbmaximumsolaren‐
ergy.
Whensunlightstrikesthecollector,thesolarradiationgoesthroughtheclearglassoftheoutsidetubesandis
absorbedbythecoatingontheoutsideoftheinnertubes.Thesolarenergyischangedintoheatenergybythe
coatingsurfaceandheatstheinnertube.
Eitheraheat‐transferfluidortheactualpotablewatertobeusedflowsthroughtubesattachedtotheab‐
sorberandtransferstheheatfromit.Theheatedwaterisstoredinastoragetankuntilneeded.Ifadditional
heatisneeded,itisprovidedbyelectricityorgasenergy.
TheSolarLordhotwatersystemyouareinstallingisa‘pump’solarsystemthathascirculationofwater(direct
loop)orglycolmixture(indirectloop)aroundthesolarcollector.
Thesmallcirculatingpumpcirculatesthewaterbetweenthecollectorsandthehotwatercylinder.Thepump
isusuallyoperatedbyasolarcontrollerthatonlyturnsthepumponwhenthewaterinthecollectoriswarmer
thanthewaterinthetank.Thesepumpsareveryquiet,offeringnonoisedisturbanceandonlydrawaround
23watts.
Wecanalsooffer12voltpumpswhicharecoupledtoaphotovoltaiccellofapproximatelyupto20wattsde‐
pendinguponsystemcharacteristics.Thesesystemsofferautomaticcontrol,i.e.whenthereissolargain,the
collectorwarmsupandalsothepumpoperates.Thesesystemsareofteninstalledinremotesiteswhere
thermosyphonsystemsarenotsuitable.
InaHeatPipecollector,theSun’senergythatisabsorbedbythetubesisthentransferredtoyourwatervia
specialheatpipeslocatedinsideeachtube.Asmallamountofnon‐toxicliquidisinsideeachheatpipe.This
liquidisturnedtogasbytheSun.Thisgasrisestothetipsofthepipeswhichareinsertedintoaheattransfer
manifoldlocatedonyourroof.Wateristhenpumpedthroughthismanifoldabsorbingtheheatandstoredina
waterstoragetanklocatedbelow.
InaUTubecollector,thecoppertubeisbentintoaUShape(calledUtube)andinlaidintoheattransferring
fins.Bothcoppertubesandapairoffinssitinsideoftheevacuatedglasstube.Whensunlightstrikesthecol‐
lectorthesolarradiationgoesthroughtheclearglassoftheoutsidetubesisabsorbedbythecoatingonthe
outsideoftheinnertubes.Thesolarenergyischangedintoheatenergybythecoatingsurfaceandheatsthe
innertube.Encircledbytheinnerglasstubethefinstransfertheheatfromtheabsorbingsurfaceoftheinner
tubetothecopperUtube.WaterflowsinsidetheUcoppertubeandisheatedandpipedtothestoragetank
whereitiskeptuntilneeded.
