Introduction
Vocal (and generally) gain riding i a widely u ed technique to control loudne of audio
track with the volume lider in tead of compre ion. Doing thi by hand during a critical
pha e of the mixing e ion could be very painful. Automatic gain riding within a DAW by
u ing an audio plugin could be very comfortable. And if thi plugin give enough flexibility
and control over the riding proce it could be u eful for a broad range of application tarting
from imple vocal/ba riding up to tricky voice over recording for commercial .
So, GainRider 2 give you thi flexibility and the full control over the riding proce .
Features:
• 3 ride mode : loudne leveling, ducking, loudne leveling to ide-chain.
• Detailed control of gain change ( peed, pre-delay, min, max, idle).
• Flexible pre-delay including zero delay mode.
• Loudne mea urement ba ed on EBUR128 ML
• Large di play to monitor impact of plugin parameter .
• Flexible pre filter.
• DAW ide chaining (VST3/RTAS/AAX/AU) or channel 3+4 (VST2).
• Read/Write automation data.
• A/B control.
• Free update for GainRider users
2 How GainRider 2 works
The gain adju tment i ba ed on "true loudne " mea urement (EBUR128 ML). GainRider 2
compare con tantly the loudne of the control ignal with the target level and adju t gain of
the main ignal (mode INT). The gain riding tart a oon a the mea ured loudne i above
the Noi eLevel value and top if it i below.
The maximum gain adju tment i limited by the RangeMin and RangeMax value ju t to
avoid overempha i of certain part of the ignal or even "pumping" effect .
The look ahead of the algorithm i controlled by the pre-delay control, tarting from 0m
(zero delay) up to 3000m .

The picture below how a typical ride proce :
1) Ride indicator (yellow), how when gain riding tart and end . Ride tart when
loudne of control ignal i higher then the noi e level and top if it i below
2) Current gain (green), how current gain curve, move between RangeMin and
RangeMax value
3) Loudne of control ignal (blue); could be either the main ignal (mode INT) or the
ide chain ignal (mode SC1 or SC2)
4) Loudne of outgoing ignal (red)

4 How to use
Simple gain riding of a (vocal) track:
Load GainRider 2 plugin into the in ert- lot of your (vocal) track. Load "default" program,
make ure that automation i et to "Idle" and mode i et to "INT". Let the DAW play and
watch the di play.
Adju t the target level o it i between the local minimum and maximum of the control ignal
(e.g. -18dBFS). Finally et the RangeMax to 0dB and the RangeMin to -9dB. Plea e note that
the ource ignal i now only reduced, no more gain increa e at the beginning or end of a ride:
Advanced gain riding with ide channel ignal (mode SC2):
In thi ca e the loudne of the main ignal follow the loudne of control ( ide chain) ignal.
Adju t the final loudne with the volume knob (e.g. +3dB), o the main ignal " it " above
control ignal.

5 Plugin ontrols
5.1 Pre-Filter
Filter the ignal for loudne mea urement. Thi let the loudne mea urement focu on the
pecific frequency range e.g. vocal or ba .
Low/High-Cut Filter:
1 - 22k Hz
5.2 Input Control
Side chain
GainRider 2 can u e ide-chain (VST3/RTAS/AAX/AU) or channel 3+4 (VST2) a control
channel for the ride proce .
Input Mode:
• INT (Internal): main ignal i leveled toward target level. The blue curve how the
incoming ignal, the red curve the outgoing ignal.
• SC1 (Side Chain 1): The main ignal i leveled to target level a oon control ignal i
above noi e level. Thi proce i called ducking. The blue curve how the control
ignal, the red curve the outgoing ignal.
• SC2 (Side Chain 2): The main ignal i leveled toward control ignal a oon main
ignal i above noi e level. The blue curve how the control ignal, the red curve the
outgoing ignal.
Target Level (dBFS):
Set the target loudne for the main ignal (mode INT) or the control ignal (mode SC1)

5.3 Gain Riding Control
Sen itivity (m ):
Set the peed of the gain change , lower value let the gain change fa ter.
PreDelay (m ):
Pre-delay align the timing of gain change with main ignal. Higher value delay the
outgoing ignal more.
Noi eLevel (dBFS):
Gain riding tart above loudne level, and top below.
RangeMin (dB):
Minimum gain change.
RangeMax (dB):
Maximum gain change.
IdleGain (dB):
Gain during idle (no ride)
5.4 A/B, S nc, Automation
A/B:
Switch between proce ed and unproce ed ignal
Sync:
Enable ynchronization with DAW tart/ top, di play i re et before play.
Automation:
Idle: no read or write of automation data.
Write: write automation data to DAW. Record parameter “Current Gain”
Read: read automation data from DAW.

6 Demo mode versus Registered mode
In demo mode (without regi tering) the plug-in mute audio every 90 econd for a hort
period. Thi could be circumvented by clicking on the "GainRider 2" logo within 90 econd .
7 Notes, tips and tricks
VST2 " ide-chaining"
VST2 doe not upport implicitly ide chaining. VST3 introduced it for the fir t time to VST
plugin architecture. So in order to u e GainRider 2 VST2 a DAW with highly flexible channel
routing i required.
