Congratulations!
Thank you for purchasing the TDK DVD-R/RW writer, a reliable, high-performance DVD rewriter,
recorder and reader. We appreciate the confidence you have shown in us. Our goal is to put
you – and keep you – at the leading edge of DVD technology.
What is DVD?
DVD is the next generation of optical disc storage technology. DVD is essentially a bigger, faster
CD that can hold cinema-like video, better-than-CD audio, and computer data. DVD aims to
encompass home entertainment, computers, and business information with a single digital
format, eventually replacing audio CD, videotape, laserdisc, CD-ROM, and video game
cartridges. DVD has widespread support music studios. With this unprecedented support, DVD
has become the most successful consumer electronics product of all time in less than three
years of its introduction.
It’s important to understand the difference between the physical formats (such as DVD-ROM
or DVD-R) and the application formats (such as DVD-Video or DVD-Audio). DVD-ROM is the
base format that holds data. DVD-Video (often simply called DVD) defines how video programs
such as movies are stored on disc and played in a DVD-Video player. The difference is similar
to that between CD-ROM and Audio CD.
Disc types
You recognize the disc types that are compatible with your DVD-writer by their logos. According
to the format of the disc, you can use it for both recording and playback or only for playback.
Some discs are not qualified to use on a DVD-recorder at all. In the following overview, all
currently existing disc types and the compatibility with this DVD-recorder are listed.
Introduction

6
The following disc types can be used for reading and writing:
DVD-R: Just like a CD-R, DVD-R is a DVD media, on which you can write (i.e. record)
data only once. It can be played back on many DVD-ROM drives and DVD-Video
players, as the same basic format as DVD-Video and DVD-ROM is used.
DVD-RW: Just like a CD-RW, DVD-RW is a DVD media, which enables data
overwriting approx. 1000 times. It can be played back on many DVD-ROM drives
and DVD-Video players.
CD-R: CD-R means “CD-Recordable.” This is a media, on which you can write
(=record) data only once. You can create an Audio CD, Photo CD, Video CD, etc.
CD-RW: CD-RW is a media, which enables data overwriting. It can be used just like
as a floppy disc.
The following disc types can be used only for reading:
DVD-Video*: DVD-Video is an application format intended for recording of a DVD
disc, such as a movie. The various functions of the DVD-Video format have been
expanded to enable multimedia content to be viewed effectively in addition to
realizing high sound and picture quality.
DVD-ROM*: The DVD-ROM format uses a playback-only disc/drive standard. At
present, there are four DVD-ROM formats: single-sided single-layer, single-sided
dual-layer, double-sided single-layer and double-sided dual-layer. Accordingly, the
data capacity of this medium increases.
NOTE: To read this format, you need special software (DVD decoder).
Audio-CD: You can play an Audio-CD on your TDK DVD-R/RW Writer in the same
way as on a CD-ROM drive.

7
Video CD: According to the content of the disc, (move, video clips, TV show, etc.),
one or multiple pieces exist on the disc. These pieces can be divided into one or
multiple indexes. (Refer to the information on the protection cover of the disc.) The
recorder enables you to change between each piece and index comfortably and
without any problem.
The following disc types cannot be used for both reading and writing:
DVD-RAM is a media, which enables rewriting data approx. 100,000 times. This
media is designed to give the priority to the data writing ability. To play back this
media, you will need DVD-RAM supporting drive.
What the TDK DVD-R/RW writer does
The TDK DVD-R/RW writer provides professional-quality DVD and CD writing, rewriting and
reading performance.
The TDK DVD-R/RW writer writes to
• DVD-R (recordable DVD) media at up to 2x speed (CLV*),
• DVD-RW (rewritable DVD) media at 1x speed (CLV*),
• CD-R (recordable CD) media at up to 8x speed (CLV*),
• CD-RW (rewritable CD) media at up to 4x speed (CLV*).
The TDK DVD-R/RW writer reads
• DVD-ROM (single layer) media at 2.5x - 6x speed (CAV*)
• DVD-ROM (dual layer) media at 2x speed (CLV*),
• DVD-R media at 2x speed (CLV*),
• DVD-RW media at 2x speed (CLV*),
• CD-ROM media at up to 24x speed (CLV*),
• CD-R media at up to 24x speed (CLV*),
• CD-RW media at up to 24x speed (CLV*),
• CD-DA (DAE) media at up to 24x speed (CLV*),
Digital Video

8
• CD-Audio Play media at up to 10x speed (CLV*),
• Video CD media at 4x speed (CLV*).
Reliable writing performance is ensured thanks to unique circuitry that enables the TDK DVD-
R/RW writer to automatically detect the type of media being recorded and react with the
optimum laser power and length of burn. Furthermore, the TDK DVD-R/RW writer’s IDE
interface* supports the ATAPI-4* command set*, including special CD-R commands.
NOTE: While most new DVD-ROM drives and DVD-Video players can read DVD-RW
discs, this is not always the case with older drives/players.
NOTE: While most new CD-ROM drives can read CD-RW discs, this is not always the
case with older drives.
Your TDK DVD-R/RW writer includes Buffer Underrun* Protection that ensures even more reliable
writing performance by preventing the problems associated with buffer underruns*. As soon as
recording starts, the internal DVD-R/RW controller starts monitoring buffer status. Should the
controller detect an imminent buffer underrun*, recording is suspended at the respective
location. The writer remains in suspended mode until the host* device has replenished the data
buffer, after which recording is resumed at the end of the previously recorded section.
Your TDK DVD-R/RW writer is equipped with Continuous Recording Speed Control (CRSC)
technology. CRSC continuously monitors the condition of the recording area over the whole
disc to determine the highest possible recording speed. Your TDK writer may adjust the
recording speed if the disc characteristics cannot support the user-selected speed. CRSC
ensures optimum recording quality at the highest recording speed.
Your TDK DVD-R/RW writer is fully MMC2-compliant* and supports writing features such as
Disc-at-Once*, Track-at-Once* and Session-at-Once* as well as variable and fixed packet
writing*. The writer also supports the UDF* writable file system used for packet writing*.
Your TDK DVD-R/RW writer supports running OPC* and is compatible with Windows plug-and-
play. Flash* memory permits the TDK DVD-R/RW writer to be upgraded to the latest firmware*
revision (available from the TDK website at www.tdk-europe.com/support) without having to
open the writer*. In addition, TDK backs the TDK DVD-R/RW writer with a two-year limited
warranty on parts and labour and provides a freephone Technical Support in the countries
specified in the “Technical Support” manual.

What you can do with your TDK DVD-R/RW writer
Using DVD format optical discs, your TDK DVD-R/RW writer applies latest storage technology.
The DVD is the most versatile digital storage medium ever developed. Its unique recording
technology allows for a vast storage capacity of up to 4.7 GB for a single-sided disc and 9.4
GB for a double-sided disc. Moreover, the DVD takes virtually any kind of digital data you may
want to record, be it audio, video, movies, photos, games, graphics, texts, computer
programmes, or any other kind of mass digital data. It is for these features, that the DVD can
be regarded the ultimate unifying high-performance storage solution that merges a vast array
of applications and technologies from PC to home theatre.
Here are just a few examples of what you can all do with your TDK DVD-R/RW writer:
• Personal Video
Save your own camcorder takes from holidays, parties, family anniversaries, etc. to your PC’s
hard disk. Edit them with the included video editing software and add a soundtrack. Then store
the finalized movie on a DVD-R (write-once DVD) or DVD-RW (rewritable DVD) for playback on
your own or your friends’ DVD player. A single DVD can take hours of top-quality digital video
recording.
• Music Archive
A single DVD can hold virtually endless hours of music. Store your favourite tunes as MP3 files
to create your ultimate music archive. Or copy your old vinyls and cassette tapes to a DVD to
preserve them for the future. A dedicated archiving software (not included) will help you find
your preferred records and create compilations to-go in no time at all.
• Picture Archive
Store the shots you take with your digital camera or scans from print photos or just about any
picture file you want to keep and build your personal picture archive. The vast storage capacity
of the DVD allows you to save everything in high resolution, so you won’t have to sacrifice
quality just to get your archive complete.
• Backup
Use your TDK DVD-R/RW writer to produce safety copies of your large databases or even your
complete hard disk. In most cases, you won’t have to swap discs, because a single DVD-R/RW

10
can backup dozens of GB of hard disk space (depending on the compression ratio of your
backup software).
Copying a movie title
You are not allowed to make a copy of the DVD-Videos (movie titles) with copy protection.

About regional codes
IMPORTANT ! Usually, one regional code is set to both DVD-Video player/writer and
software. More than one regional code can be assigned to one DVD-Video player/writer
or one software. If both DVD-Video player/writer and software have the one same code, the
software can be played back on that DVD-Video player/writer. However, only one regional code
is set to a DVD-Video player/writer in most cases.
Note: Even both DVD-Video player/writer and software have the same regional code, it
cannot be played back if the broadcasting method is different (NTSC or PAL).
The regional codes on your TDK DVD-R/RW writer can be changed ONLY FIVE TIMES
including the first setting. Please note that the 5th change will be PERMANENT.
Regional codes are part of the DVD Standard. However, regional codes are entirely optional for
DVD discs. DVD discs with “region free” (ALL) can be played on any DVD-Video player.
TDK is not responsible for the regional code setting after you changed this setting or played a
DVD disc with different regional codes five times. Please note that TDK will not be able to
change this setting for you.

Precautions
Like the rest of your computer system, your TDK DVD-R/RW writer requires reasonable care
in its installation and use.
PLEASE OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING PRECAUTIONS FOR YOUR SAFETY AND BEST
PERFORMANCE RESULTS OF YOUR WRITER:
• Keep the area around your writer free of dust, smoke and other contaminants. Also, please
do not use the writer at places with high temperature or high humidity and where it is
subjected to vibrations or shocks.
• Never allow moisture or liquids, including water or cleaning fluids, to come into contact with
the writer. Thinners, lighter fuel or alcohol-based solvents can mar the surface of your
writer.
• Never drop or jolt the writer.
• Never attempt to open the writer and service it yourself. Dismantling the writer may expose
you to harmful electrical voltages or to laser radiation and will invalidate your warranty. For
your safety, technical servicing should only be performed by TDK-authorised service
personnel.
• Do not use liquid, aerosol cleaners, or alcohol to clean the writer. Use only a damp cloth to
clean the exterior housing.
• Moisture will form in the operating section of the writer causing performance to be
impaired. If you are moving the writer from cool surroundings to a location with a warmer
temperature, let the writer stand for one to two hours before turning it back ON.
17

• Keep your DVD and CD discs free of dirt or other contaminants by storing them in jewel
cases. Use only industry-standard discs. Never insert dirty, warped, poorly balanced or
cracked discs into the writer.
• Never clean discs using a circular motion! Instead, use a radial motion: start at the centre
of the disc and work outwards using a clean, soft cotton cloth.

Typical scenario 1: your PC features an IDE* interface* with a free secondary IDE* port* and
runs with Windows 98/98SE/Me/2000/XP or higher.
What to do: leave the TDK DVD-R/RW writer’s factory jumper setting as master*, connect the
writer to the secondary IDE* port*. Then close and reboot your computer. Windows will
recognise the new writer automatically.

What to do: change the CD-ROM’s jumper setting to slave*, leave the TDK
DVD-R/RW writer’s factory jumper setting as master*, connect the TDK DVD-R/RW writer to the
secondary IDE* port*. Then close and reboot your computer. Windows will recognise the new
writer automatically.
If neither of these situations applies to you or you are unused to IDE* installations, you should
read the rest of this section for more detailed installation instructions.
Preparing for the installation
To determine whether your TDK DVD-R/RW writer will be a master* or a slave*, you will need to
open your computer and examine the IDE* connections to the motherboard*. Before
proceeding, make sure the POWER to your computer and any external peripherals are OFF and
your computer is UNPLUGGED from its power source.
