SW-221
1.2. Overview the SW-221Subwoofer
The Tecnare® SW-221 is a high power, high output
low frequency system that sets a new standard in the sound
reinforcement. It can be used to supplement any Tecnare
subwoofer system and extend the low frequency response
down to 27 Hz.
The SW-221 cabinets are a 1-way bass-reex
design to extend the frequency response down to 27 Hz. It
has two bass-reex chambers housing two long excursion
neodymium 21-inch drivers and ultra-wide ports that drasti-
cally reduce low-frequency turbulence with low distortion.
The SW-221 is designed to streamline setup a
deliver maximum result in minimum time uniting features
unique to deliver solutions for rental and installations sys-
tems.
The SW-221 can only be used in ground stacked
congurations as conventional left/right setup as well as ar-
ranged in a cardioid subwoofer conguration by combining physical deployment and the suitable preset.
The Tecnare® SW-221 utilizes the all Tecnare T20-44 amplier power. The Tecnare T20-44 ensures ad-
vanced crossover functions, linearisation and protection of the transducers. Its on-board library offers standard and
cardioid presets, each available with two low-pass lters to accommodate various coupling conditions and low fre-
quency requirements. Do not used this options is a risk of damaging the loudspeaker components.
The cabinet is assembled from 18mm ply Baltic birch and has an impact and weather resistant paint nishes
(Polyurea Protection), properly braced for the intended use. The front of the cabinet is protected by a hex-stamped
steel grille with acoustical black mesh protective and each side panel incorporate four recessed handlers. Bottom
runners ensure safe stacking and protecting the bottom panel against scratching.
The connectors are Neutrik NL4. Four 100mm blue rubber wheels are available to mount at the rear panel of
the cabinet for transportation.
1.3. Connections
SW-221 loudspeaker utilizes Neutrik® SpeakON® connectors. There are two
NLT4 connectors on the rear of each SW-221 and one NLT4 connector on the front.
These connectors mate with Neutrik NL-4 or NL-4 compatible in-line cable connectors.
Only two pins of both connectors are wired in parallel. The following subsections de-
scribe the electrical connections.
The SW-221 uses the pin assignment 1+/1+. Under special order, the customer
can required the assignments 2+/2- and appoint the pin 1+/1- to TOP cabinets.
CAUTION: Only should use the second connector (link) to connect to a second cabinet when the power con-
ditions of amplier allow it. Don’t hesitate to contact with our Tecnare technical support team on

1.4. Processing and amplication
Only operate Tecnare loudspeaker with a correctly congured Tecnare preset. Tecnare offer a complete
solution that guarantees the highest level of performance. A complete range of controllers, amplied and amplied
controller with DSP are available to get this objective. Otherwise, there is a risk of damaging the loudspeaker com-
ponents.
1.4.1. Processing
The Tecnare DP4896 is the approved processor for use with the SW-221 loudspeaker. Refer to DP4896
user manual.
1.4.2. Amplication
To power Sub Series, Tecnare recommends ampliers with the power ratings enough to feed the loud-
speakers. For high power or live applications, it is recommended to oversize the ampliers relative to
the nominal AES output of the subwoofers. In certain specic cases it is possible to slightly under-power
the subs or loudspeakers as long as the amplier will not be driven to its limits.
In any case, the Tecnare processors should be deployed in front of the amp to ensure that the ampliers
to not go into clip.
The DP4896 processors also include:
- Thermal protection from power surges or overload
- Excursion displacement protection
The T20-44 amplier is the ideal companion for maximum performance of the Sub Series loudspeakers. This
amplier controller with DSP offer a complete both preset and protection solution for any application.
1.5. Operation modes
The SW-221 loudspeaker can be operated in two operation modes. The operation mode is chosen in the
system amplier.
i. Upper limit frequency at 75Hz
When the cabinet are located remotely from other Tecnare cabinet or when neither other subwoofer is
being used operation with at 75Hz is recommended (SW221_75).
ii. Upper limit frequency at 60Hz. Infra mode
If the SW-221 is used for extending the lower limit frequency and the cabinets are close to other sub-
woofer operation in Infra mode is recommended. SW221_60 can be selected. In Infra mode the upper
limit frequency of the subwoofer is signicantly lower.

2. Loudspeaker Setup
2.1. Standard Operation
The standard operation corresponds to the use of subwoofers as single elements or as standard subwoofer
arrays.
In this conguration the system operates with an omni-directional or quasi-omni-directional directivity pattern.
The (SW221_60) and (SW221_75) factory presets provide to the subwoofers an upper frequency limit at
60Hz and 75Hz respectively in order to optimize the coupling with main system or if other subwoofer are being used.

2.2. Cardioid Operation
SW-221 subwoofer can be congured in cardioid arrays to reduce the amount of output heard behind the
subwoofers. Subwoofer cardioid arrays are archived by placing three units coplanar to each other with one unit facing
the opposite direction. The output of the reversed subwoofer cancels the output of the other subwoofers normally
present behind the units.
Tecnare has specically designed cardioid presets (SW221_60i and SW221_75i). However, we recommend
calculating the appropriate ratio of forward to rear facing loudspeakers, as well as the measurement of required pa-
rameter setting of polarity, delay, and gain. For more information, contact Tecnare Technical Support.

SW-221
3. LOUDSPEAKER CONNECTION
Tecnare® Sound Systems recommended operating the SW-221 loudspeaker together Tecnare loudspeaker
controllers.
Tecnare® only recommends using preset/amplier developed by Tecnare, otherwise there is a risk of damag-
ing the loudspeaker components. DP Series Loudspeaker Controller, PA Series amplier and T-Series amplier are
ideal for this purpose.
Ensure that the right preset was selected before connecting the loudspeaker with the amplier.
Operating with an incorrect preset can damage part of the loudspeaker.
Ensure that the amplier is properly size according to requirements. Under-power or oversize power amplier
without the supervision of an expert may damage the loudspeaker.
Please note the technical specication section.
3.1. Connection to T20-44
MAXIMUM OF 04 ENCLOSURES PER T20-44
01 x SW-221 can be connected to each output channel on the T20-44. Therefore, a single T20-44 am-
plier controller can drive up to 04 enclosures.
See the preset manual connect the reverse subwoofer to use the cardioid preset.
Impedance load: 4Ω for 1 enclosure.

Transport & Storage
www.tecnare.com Subwoofer Series | rev.:2.1
SW-221
4. Transport and storage
As the Tecnare SW-221 loudspeaker weighs over 125kg (275,58 lbs), four people are needed to move and
transport the unit.
To transport the unit whit a single person, Tecnare recommends using the optional wheels on the rear of the
unit.
For touring and portable systems, the SW-221 can travel in stacks of up three units with an optional caster
frame.
When transporting and storing the unit, it is important to ensure that the nish and front steel grille of the
loudspeaker are not damaged. Moisture can penetrate through exposed wood surfaces and cause the wood to swell.
A bent or broken front grille will no longer adequately protect the sensitive speaker membranes.
In addition, appreciable dust deposits may considerably impair the functionality of a loudspeaker membrane.
For this reason, the loudspeakers should be transported and stored in a safe, careful, dry and largely dust-free man-
ner.
Durable protective covers for one unit and accommodating stacks of two or three units are optionally availa-
ble to ensure the SW2-221 is completely road ready.
Other options include weather protection and custom colour nishes for xed installations and applications
with specic cosmetic requirements.
The original packaging don’t should use as permanent storage and transport packaging.
