IMPORTANT: This is a precision machine and the service obtained from it depends on the way it is
operatedandmaintained.
ThisSAFETY ANDOPERATORS MANUALshould beregarded aspart ofthe machine. Suppliersof both
newandsecond-handmachinesareadvisedtoretaindocumentaryevidencethatthismanualwasprovided
with the machine.
This machine is designed solely for use in customary grass cutting operations. Use in any other way is
considered as contrary to the intended use. Compliance with and strict adherence to the conditions of
operation,service andrepairas specifiedby themanufacturer, alsoconstitute essentialelements ofthe
intendeduse.

This safety symbol indicates important safety
messages in this manual. When you see this
symbol, be alert to the possibility of injury, carefully

3.1OPERATINGINSTRUCTIONS
• Ensure that the instructions in this book
arereadandfullyunderstood.
• Nopersonshouldbeallowedtooperate
this machine unless they are fully
acquainted with all the controls and the
safetyprocedures.
• Neverallowchildrenorpeopleunfamiliar
with these instructions to usethis
machine. Local regulations may restrict
theageoftheoperator.
3.2SAFETYSIGNS
• It is essential all safety labels are kept
legible, if they are missing or illegible they
must be replaced. If any part of the
machine is replaced and it originally
carried a safety label, a new label must be
affixedto thereplacement part. New
safetylabelsareobtainablefrom
Ransomesdealers.
3.3STARTINGTHEENGINE
• Before starting the engine check that the
brakesareapplied,drivesareinneutral,
guards are in position and intact, and
bystandersare clearofthe machine.
• Do not run the engine in a building without
adequateventilation.
3.4DRIVINGTHEMACHINE
• Beforemovingthemachine, checkto
ensure that all parts are in good working
order,payingparticularattentionto
brakes, tyres, steering and the security of
cuttingblades.
• Replace faulty silencers, mow only in
daylightor goodartificial light
• AlwaysobservetheHighwayCodebothon
andoff theroads. Keepalertand awareat
all times. Watch out for traffic when
crossingornearroadways.
• Stopthebladesrotatingbeforecrossing
surfacesotherthan grass.
• Rememberthatsomepeoplearedeafor
blind and that children and animals can
beunpredictable.
• Keeptravellingspeedslowenoughforan
emergencystoptobeeffectiveandsafe
at all times, in any conditions.
• Removeoravoidobstructionsinthearea
to be cut, thus reducing the possibility of
injurytoyourselfand/or bystanders.
• Whenreversing, take specialcare to
ensure that the area behind is clear of
obstructionsand/orbystanders. DO
NOTcarrypassengers.
• Keep in mind that the operator or user is
responsibleforaccidentsorhazards
occurringtootherpeople ortheir
property.
• When the machine is to be parked,
storedorleftunattended,lowerthe
cutting means unless the transport locks
arebeingused.
• Whilemowing, alwayswear substantial
footwearand longtrousers. Donot
operatetheequipmentwhenbarefootor
wearingopensandals.
• Checkthegrass catcherfrequentlyfor
wearor deterioration. Afterstriking a
foreignobject. Inspect. the lawnmower
fordamageandmakerepairsbefore
restartingandoperatingtheequipment.
• Ifthe machinestarts tovibrate
abnormally,check immediately.
3.5TRANSPORTING
• Ensure that the cutting units are
securelyfastened inthetransport
position. Do not transport with cutting
mechanismrotating.
• Drivethemachinewithdueconsideration
ofroadand surfaceconditions,inclines
andlocalundulations.
• Suddendeceleratingorbrakingcan
cause the rear wheels to lift.
• Remember that the stability of the rear of
the machine is reduced as the fuel is
used.

• Parkthemachineonlevelground.
• Beforeleavingthedrivingposition,stopthe
engineandmakesure allmoving partsare
stationary. Apply brakes and disengage all
drives.Removethestarterkey.

TAKEEXTRACAREWHENWORKINGON
SLOPES
• Localundulationsandsinkage willchange
thegeneralslope.Avoidgroundconditions
which can cause the machine to slide.
• Keep machine speeds low on slopes and
duringtight turns.
• Suddendeceleratingorbrakingcancause
the rear wheels to lift. Remember there is
no such thing as a “safe” slope.
• Travelongrassslopesrequiresparticular
care.
DONOTUSEONSLOPESGREATERTHAN15°
IMPORTANT: When working on any slope set the
weight transfer, if fitted to its maximum (+) setting.
3.8BLOCKEDCUTTINGCYLINDERS
• Stopthe engineand makesure allmoving
partsare stationary.
• Applybrakesanddisengagealldrives.
• Release blockages with care. Keep all parts
of the body away from the cutting edge.
Bewareofenergyinthedrivewhichcan
causerotationwhen theblockage is released.
• Keepotherpeople awayfrom the cuttingunits
as rotation of one cylinder can cause the
others to rotate.
3.9ADJUSTMENTS,LUBRICATIONAND
MAINTENANCE
All vehicles
• Stopthe engineand makesure allmoving
partsare stationary.
• Applybrakesanddisengagealldrives.
• Readalltheappropriateservicinginstructions.
• Use only the replacement parts supplied by
theoriginalmanufacturer.
• When adjusting the cutting cylinders take
carenot toget handsand feettrapped when
rotatingcylinders.
• Makesure that otherpeople arenot touching
any cutting units, as rotation of one cylinder
can cause the others to rotate.
• Toreducethefire hazard,keep theengine,
silencerandbatterycompartmentsfreeof
grass,leavesorexcessivegrease.
• Replacewornordamagedpartsforsafety.
• Whenworkingunderneathliftedpartsor
machines,makesureadequate supportIs
provided.
• Do not dismantle the machine without
releasingorrestrainingforceswhichcan
causeparts tomove suddenly.
• Donotalterenginespeedabovemaximum
quoted in Engine Specification. Do not
changetheenginegovernorsettingsor
overspeedtheengine. Operatingtheengine
at excessive speed may increase the hazard
ofpersonalinjury.
• Whenservicingbatteries,DONOT SMOKE,
and keep naked lights away.
• Do not place any metal objects across the
terminals.
Diesel & Petrol vehicles
• Whenrefuelling,STOPTHEENGINE,DO
NOTSMOKE.Add fuelbeforestartingthe
engine,neveraddfuelwhiletheengineis
running.
• Useafunnelwhen pouringfuelfrom acaninto
the tank.
• Do not fill the fuel tank beyond the bottom of
the filler neck.
• Replace all fuel tank and container caps
securely.
• Storefuel incontainersspecifically designed
forthispurpose.
• Refueloutdoors onlyand donot smokewhile
refuelling.
• If fuel is spilled, do not attempt to start the
enginebutmovethemachineawayfromthe
areaofspillageandavoidcreatinganysource
ofignitionuntilfuelvapourshavedissipated.
• Allow the engine to cool before storing in any
enclosure.
• Neverstoretheequipment withfuel inthe
tankinside a buildingwhere fumesmay reach
anopen flameorspark.
• If the fuel tank has to be drained, this should
bedoneoutdoors.
• Do not spill fuel onto hot components.
LPG vehicles
• Only trained & competent personnel in the
useof LPG asa roadvehicle fuelare
allowed to work on LPG aspects of the
vehiclesengineorfuel system.
• Whenrefuelling,STOPTHEENGINE,DO
NOTSMOKE.Add fuelbeforestartingthe
engine,neveraddfuelwhiletheengineis
running.
• Vehicles should not be parked within 3
metersofany heatsource, open flameor
othersourcesof ignition.
• Vehiclesshouldnotbeservicedoveran
inspection pit

IMPORTANT: Transport speed is for highway
use only. Never select transport speed on grass
areas or uneven or unsurfaced roads or tracks.
TheoperatingInstructionsfortheCuttingUnitsare
contained in a separate Publication .
• If for any reason a leak in the fuel system
issuspected,thevehicle shouldbemoved
to an isolated area clear of buildings &
peopleand asfar aspossible fromdrains
andanysource ofignition.
• Thefuelfillerbayonetonthevehicleshould
beinspected regularly forany signsof
damage.
• The gas used to fill the vehicle must be
sourcedfromareputablesupplier.
• If a machine starts to vent gas when it is
runningitshould bemoved toanarea
awayfrom anysources ofignition and
stopped. If it vents when static the
machine should not be started, all
potentialsources ofignition shouldbe
inhibiteduntiltheventing hasstoppedand
thelocalRansomesJacobsendealer
shouldbe contacted.
• WherepracticalLPGfuelledvehicles
should be parked in the open air, in a well
ventilated position. Where this is not
reasonably practical due to lack of space,
security ect. vehicles should be parked
insidesuitably designedbuildingsor

Cutting Unit Transport Latches are a
Secondary Safety Devise.
When Transporting the machine the
Cutting units should be held in the
Transport position on the Hydraulics with
the Transport Latches Engaged.
1. Park the machine on level ground.
2. Whilst seated in the driving position
With the engine at operating speed
raise the cutting units fully by
operating lift levers, return the lever to
the neutral position.
DO NOT move the lever into the
lower position.
3. Disengage drives, stop the engine and
make sure all moving parts are
stationary. Apply brakes and remove
the starter key.
4. Transport latches can now be engaged
or released.
Before releasing transport latches
it is important that all cutting units
are fully raised.

3.10 GUIDELINESFORTHEDISPOSAL
OFSCRAPPRODUCTS
When it has been identified that a turf care
product has no further functional value and
requires disposal, the following actions should
betaken.
These guidelines should be used in
conjunction with applicable Health, Safety and
Environmental legislation and use of approved
local facilities for waste disposal and recycling.
• Position the machine in a suitable
location for any necessary lifting
equipment to be used.
• Use appropriate tools and Personal
Protective Equipment (PPE) and take
guidance from the technical manuals
applicable to the machine.
• Remove and store appropriately:
1. Batteries
2. Fuel residue
3. Engine coolant
4. Oils
• Disassemble the structure of the
machine referring to the technical
manuals where appropriate. Special
attention should be made for dealing
with ‘stored energy’ within
pressurised elements of the machine
or tensioned springs.
• Any items that still have a useful
service life as second hand
components or can be re-serviced
should be separated and returned to
the relevant centre.
• Other worn out items should be
separated into material groups for
recycling and disposal consistent with
available facilities. More common
separation types are as follows:
• Steel
• Non ferrous metals
• Aluminium
• Brass
• Copper
• Plastics
• Identifiable
• Recyclable
• Non recyclable
• Notidentified
• Rubber
• Items that cannot be separated
economically into different material
groups should be added to the
‘General waste’ area.
• Do not incinerate waste.
Finally update machinery records to indicate
that the machine has been taken out of service
and scrapped.

6.1STARTERKEYSWITCH
Thestarterkey(A) shouldbe turnedclockwisetothe'pre-
heat'(No.2)positiontoheattheglowplugswhenthegreen
warninglampgoesoutonwarninglampdisplymoduleturn
thestarterkeyclockwisetothe'start'(No.3)positiontostart
theengine.After starting,the keyshouldbe releasedand
allowedtoreturnautomaticallytothe'on'(No.1)positionfor
normalrunning.
6.2THROTTLECONTROLLEVER
Thelever (B)shouldbe movedawayfromtheoperator to
increase the engine speed and towards the operator to
decreasetheenginespeed.
NOTE:Engineshouldbeusedatfullspeed.
6.4TRACTIONFOOTPEDAL
Tomovethemachineforwardpressthefrontofthefoot
pedal(A).Toreversedepresstherearofthefootpedal.
Whenthe pedalis releaseditwillreturnto itsneutral
position.
6.5SPEEDLIMITER
Thespeedlimiter(B) isoperated byslidingtheblack
knob to the right or left. When slid to the right the
machine is limited to cutting speed, when slid to the left,
transportspeedisavailable.Intransportmode,reverseis
notavailable.Whenthe speedlimiterisinthe mowspeed
positionfourwheeldriveisengaged.
IMPORTANT: To enable mow engage the speed
limiter must be in the cutting speed position. If
cutting units are rotating, moving the speed limiter
between the mow and transport positions will
engage and disengage cylinder rotation.
6.3STEERINGWHEELRAKEADJUSTMENT
The steering wheel is adjustable for rake. The clamping
releaseknob(A)issituatedonthesideofthecontrolconsole
on the right hand side. To adjust turn the clamping knob
anticlockwise to release and pivot the steering wheel
backwardsandforwardstoobtaindesiredsettingthenlock
inposition byturning clampingknob clockwise.

6.6TRANSPORTLATCHES
Whentransporting themachine ensurethecutting
units are raised and the transport latches (A) are
engaged.
6.7PARKINGBRAKES
Theparkingbrake(B)isengagedwhentheleveris
movedtowardtheoperator. Thebrakeisfittedwitha
micro switch that sensors brake position. The brake
must be applied to start the machine, and when
stoppingandleavingtheseat.
CAUTION:- The parking brake must not be
applied whilst the vehicle is moving.
6.8HYDRAULICLIFTLEVERS
The cutting units can be raised and lowered by three
controllevers(A)situatedontherighthandsideofthe
operatorsseat andcanbe operatedas follows:

NOTE:Ifanyunitisraisedoutofworkthenloweredinto
workagainthecylinderwillnotrotateuntilthemowfoot

Tolift:Movethelever(s)upwardsandholdinposition
until the units are at the required height.
Tolower:Movethelever(s)fullydownwardsandrelease,
theunit(s)willlowertogroundlevel.DONOTholdlever
indownposition.
NOTE:Theunitswillonlyliftandlowerwhentheengine
isrunning.
IMPORTANT: If, when cutting, a lift control lever is
accidentlypulledup,thecuttingunitswillnotfloatover
groundundulationsuntiltheleverispushedfullydown
andallowedtoreturntoneutralagain.
6.9UNITCOUNTERBALANCECONTROL
Cuttingunitgroundpressurecanbevariedwithin
preset limits and is controlled by the handwheel (B)
on the right hand side of the operator's seat located
nexttothelift/lowerlevers.Thehandwheelisturned
clockwisetoreduce thegroundweight of thecutting
unit,improving slopeclimbingability.
Thehandwheel isturned anticlockwisetoincrease
thegroundweightoftheunit.Increaseddown
pressure will reduce the likelyhood of cutting unit
bouncewhencuttingundulatingground.When
cuttinglevel ground thenormal settingis midway
way between the maximum and minimum positions.

6.10CUTTINGUNITSWITCHES
To commence cutting ensure speed limiter is in
mowpositionand thecylinders havebeenlowered
Push bottom of the rocker switch (A) and depress
foot switch (B) Push top of rocker switch to stop
cutter unit rotation. (Cutting units stop rotating
automaticallywhenraised.)
NOTE: The backlapping lever must be in the
drive position before cylinders wil rotate.
6.11VARIABLECYLINDERSPEED
Thespeedofrotationofthecuttingcylindersisadjustable
bymeansofthehandwheel(A)situatedonthelefthand
side of the operator. Cylinder speed should be set to
maximum in normal cutting conditions. In very long
growthconditions,cylinderspeedshouldbereducedto
obtainbestfinish,cylinderspeedshouldalsobereduced
whencuttingveryshort,drygrasstopreventexcesive
cylinderandbottombladewear.Rotatethehandwheel
clockwisetoincreasecylinderspeed,anticlockwiseto
decreasecylinderspeed.
6.12BACKLAPPINGLEVER
Thelever(B)sets cuttingcylinderrotational direction
withthreepositions:
(a)fully towards theseat formowing, (b) fullyaway
from the seat for backlapping and (c) set in the mid
position for neutral. See the separate cutting unit
operator'smanualforanexplanationofthe
backlappingprocedure.

fortwominutesbeforestoppingandinvestigatingthe
cause.
D. CHARGINGWARNINGLAMP
Colourred,onwhenignitionisswitched onandwillgoout
whenthe engineis started. Ifthelight comesonwhile
theengineisrunning,thefanbeltmaybeslippingor
broken or a fault in the electrical system is indicated and
shouldbeinvestigated. STOPIMMEDIATELY.
E. ENGINEOILPRESSUREWARNINGLAMP
Colourred,onwhentheignition isswitchedon,andwill
goout oncethe enginehas started. Ifthelightcomeson
whiletheengineisrunning-STOPIMMEDIATELYas
this indicates that the engine oil pressure is too low.
Checkthe levelof oilin thesumpand topup as
necessary. Checkthe oilpressuresender switch.
Continuedoperationmaycauseextensivedamagetothe
engine.
F. ROTATINGBEACON
Press the bottom half of the switch to activate the
flashingbeacon.(Wherefitted)
G. HEADLIGHT/SIDELIGHT
Depress the bottom half of the switch to turn on the
headlightsandsidelights.(Wherefitted)
H. DIRECTIONALINDICATORS
Depress left hand-side of switch to signal left, and
right hand-side of switch to signal right. (Where
fitted)
I. HAZARDWARNINGLIGHTS.

6.14DIFFLOCKCONTROL
TheDifflock (A)is operatedby depressing thefoot
switch. When the foot switch is released the Diff
Lock ceases to operate. The Diff Lock should only
beusedinseveresituations,andshouldneverbe
used on tarmac or whilst steering

7 OPERATION
The daily inspection should be performed
only when the engine is off and all fluids
are cold. Lower implements to the
ground, engage parking brake, stop
engine and remove ignition key.
CAUTION
7.1DAILYINSPECTION
1. Perform a visual inspection of the entire unit, look for signs of wear, loss hardwear and missing or
damaged components. Check for fuel and oil leaks to ensure connections are tight and hoses and
tubesare in goodcondition.
2. Check the fuel supply, radiator coolant level, crankcase oil level and air cleaner indicator. All fluids
must be at the full mark with the engine cold.
3. Make sure all cutting units are adjusted to the same height of cut.
4. Checkall tyresforproper inflation.
5. Test the operator presence and safety interlock system.
