Note: The Barfly system can also be installed in a multiple TV source configuration,
allowing multiple independent video sources to be used so that multiple screens can have
different video content. For further information on various installation configurations, refer
to “Standard Installation Scenarios” starting on page 19.
Pre-installation Data Submission
Before installing the Barfly system, venue-specific information must be gathered. See
“Pre-installation Data Submission” starting on page 45.
Identify Screen(s) for Barfly
Deciding which TV Barfly will display on is a critical decision. The following are some
guidelines to assist you with that decision:
• The goal is to enable the viewing of Barfly by as many unique venue patrons as possible.
• The TV should be a prominent screen that will not be bypassed regularly. (Sometimes
the number 1 viewed TV is not the appropriate target).
• The TV should not necessarily be the largest screen but should be located close by.
• Avoid oversaturation—having Barfly displayed everywhere makes it “noise”.
• Choose a flat screen with a minimum diagonal measurement of 42 inches.
• The TV must have component or HDMI inputs; HDMI is preferred.
• The TV must have a minimum resolution of 720p.
• If installing a single TV source (one scaler), try to choose two screens of the same size
and, if possible, the same brand.
• If choosing screens of different sizes, try to make sure both screens cannot be seen at
the same time in case there is some variation in the picture quality.
• Understand how that TV is used, such as:
• How are the channels changed?
• Does it provide audio, etc.?
This could greatly impact the configuration of the Barfly system.
Locating Equipment
Look for a good location to stow all the Barfly equipment that is out of the way but still
allows easy access. In some cases it may be necessary to install a shelf to put the
equipment.
• Keep service in mind when installing the system. Keep the equipment out of danger from
heat, liquid or physical damage but within reach. You need to remember your customer
will be your on-site hands during phone support.

4
Overview and Pre-Installation
• All equipment should be located as closely together as possible.
Equipment/Service Requirements
• Find a dedicated power source. If the venue turns off the breakers at night, Barfly needs
to be on a circuit that remains powered up. Do not plug into another power strip or a
switched outlet.
• Persistent Internet access is required. The Barfly system can be plugged into any Internet
connection that has reasonable bandwidth (768K minimum). It is the responsibility of the
Operator to maintain the Barfly systems broadband connectivity regardless of the source.
Contact your Touchtunes/Barfly Account Rep for the latest broadband offerings available
via Touchtunes.
• Make certain the customer understands: Alternate video sources will be disconnected
and, unless they specify otherwise, audio to the Barfly TV will be lost.
Configuring and Ordering Equipment
Consult the venue personnel about what is possible and how installing the Barfly system
will affect the functionality of their system. If they are asking for a configuration that does
not make sense, or is very difficult to install, make some suggestions.
Equipment is ordered and shipped as follows:
• Computers and switcher/scalers are requested on a per-venue installation basis.
• Extra parts such as converters, tuners, shelving are shipped to and warehoused with
Operators in bulk based on historically used counts.
Content
TouchTunes/Barfly Sales will continue to keep you informed on the latest improvements
as pertains to online information submissions.
Best Practices
TouchTunes/Barfly technical personnel have conducted installations in numerous and
varied venues with many types of existing video systems, and have compiled a set of best
practices that we deem to yield the highest quality results. The following information is
provided to assist Operators in understanding the underlying basis for our questions during
the walk-through and generation of the resulting Bill of Materials.
• Barfly does not support HDMI as input from the video source due to HDCP (HDMI
encryption). For the same reason, DVI input is not supported.
• Barfly is an HD-based system that is flexible enough to accommodate most standard
definition inputs. However, where possible, an upgrade to the video source should be

Required Tools and Equipment
5
considered to get the best picture quality and take advantage of TV’s capabilities. Barfly
only supports TVs that accept the following inputs: HDMI, component, and VGA.
• VGA should only be used if HDMI and component are not available. VGA presents
certain difficulties, as it is not a standard, and the TV’s VGA implementation may not be
supported. Typically, a TV’s VGA input is only intended for direct computer input and no
other device (for example, a scaler).
• Barfly will supply a tuner if necessary to demodulate the signal before the Barfly system
receives it (in the case of coaxial- only sources). Venues, however, should consider
upgrading their service to digital or HD service in order to get the best quality picture
possible. This upgrade is available through their cable or satellite provider at a nominal
cost.
• Barfly does not support coaxial input to the TV.
Required Tools and Equipment
Installing your Barfly system requires the following tools and equipment:
Note: Some tools are optional, depending on the circumstances of your particular
installation, and are indicated with an asterisk (*).
• * Basic drill kit with bits capable of penetration through wood, brick, steel and other
materials (should include hole saw kit up to 1.5" diameter).
• * Basic hand tool kit including screwdrivers and pliers.
• Basic wire preparation and pulling tools including cutters, wire strippers, fish tape, pull
line, fiber rods, and so on.
• Crimp tool for RJ45 and RJ11 connectors.
• CAT 5/6 network cable tester.
• Cable toner / test kit for cable tracing.
• PC/Laptop and broadband router for calibrating the scaler.
• * Ladders and lights for accessing a variety of spaces including high ceilings.
• * Cable ties.
• Bulk CAT5e solid core cable and RJ45 connectors.
Note: CAT5 couplers will not work with Barfly systems.
• * Miscellaneous Video Cable and Adaptors.

Installing Barfly
This chapter explains how to install the Barfly system, including
setting up its hardware and connecting it to a broadband network.
Installation Codes and Best Practices
Placement of Barfly Equipment
The scaler should be placed as closely as possible to the video source (e.g., cable box,
satellite box, matrix switch, or tuner):
Refer installation to qualified service personnel—Installation of the system
should only be performed by an experienced installer or licensed contractor
who is familiar with standard rigging and cabling practices as recognized by a
licensed engineer or government agency in your area.
As the structural considerations of your particular venue will determine the type
of hardware required, this document provides only general guidelines for
preparing for installation, and does not provide detailed instructions for the
running of cables and power lines.
Choose a location, cable running method, and mounting hardware consistent
with local building codes and regulations.
Ensure the chosen venue has adequate structural integrity to support the
installed equipment.

8
Installing Barfly
If there is a considerable distance between the scaler and Barfly computer and/or the TV,
the HDMI Over Single CAT5 Extender kit can be used to ensure proper signal quality. See
“Long Cable Runs” on page 18.
Installation Overview
The following is an outline of the steps required to complete a Barfly installation.
1. Take the time to make a thorough audit of the picture quality as it exists on the TVs
before touching anything. If there are any issues such as ghosting, color distortion,
scrolling lines, and so on, bring this to the attention of the venue management
immediately.
2. Disconnect all existing video inputs to the venue’s TV. Audio connections, whether
connected directly to the TV or to the venue’s sound system, are best left intact, and
cannot be plugged into the scaler.
3. Install all Barfly hardware components and connect them to the venue’s TV screen.
4. Run the calibration wizard so that the frames and images are properly centered and
sized.
5. Label cabling, especially at end remote from Barfly. Label converters and splitters, as
appropriate. This helps your customer during troubleshooting.
6. DOCUMENT THE INSTALLATION! There may be a time when someone other than you
is providing phone support. A thorough description of the installation is critical.
7. The installation data must be sent to TouchTunes/Barfly.
