Prostiva RF Therapy
Telescope
Introduction
The instructions below describe the
general procedure for safe handling of
the Prostiva RF Therapy Telescopes.
The telescope is a reusable device.
Before you use the telescope and for
each subsequent use, it must be
cleaned, decontaminated, and
sterilized. These instructions are
designed to assist you in cleaning,
sterilizing, caring for, and storing your
telescopes. Please read them carefully.
By following these instructions, your
telescopes will provide you with a long
service life.
Indications for Use
The telescope is used to position the
Model 8929 Prostiva RF Hand Piece
through the urethra into the prostate.
This telescope shall only be used in
conjunction with the Prostiva Hand
Piece.
Safety Information
For a list of contraindications, warnings,
precautions and adverse events refer to
the Prostiva RF Therapy System User
Guide.
Instructions for Use
Inspection
Upon receipt, immediately inspect the
telescope for signs of damage. Also
inspect the Prostiva RF Therapy
Telescope before and after every
procedure. Dents along the shaft and
scratches on the lens are the most
noticeable signs of damage. Look
through and rotate the telescope to
check the clarity of the view. Scratches,
fingerprints and debris will cause an
impaired view. Additionally, debris may
act as an abrasive and scratch the lens.
To make certain a telescope is in good
working order, observe the reflected
light on the surfaces of the ocular and
objective lenses. These surfaces should
be smooth and shiny.
Inspect the integrity of the fiber optics
by holding the light post towards a light
and observing the distal tip. The fiber
optics are intact when the light is evenly
distributed. Darkened areas indicate
broken fibers. Foggy images may result
from moisture entering a damaged seal
around the lens. A partially or
completely obstructed view may be the
result of damaged lenses within the

10 English 2012-11 8099/8099TU15
telescope shaft or eyepiece. Do not use
a telescope that shows signs of
damage.
If it is necessary to dispose of the
telescope, discard in accordance with
local environmental regulations.
For assembly, installation and
connection instructions, refer to the
Prostiva RF Therapy System User
Guide.
Handling
The Prostiva RF Therapy Telescope
consists of an eyepiece with glass
ocular lens, a fiber optic light cable
connection with screw-on type cable
connectors to accept several
manufacturers’ light cables, and a
stainless steel shaft containing the rod
lens system and objective lens.
As with all optical instruments, the
telescope is a very delicate piece of
endoscopic equipment. To ensure the
long-lasting quality of the telescope,
please follow the handling instruction
described below.
■To prevent breakage, the telescope
should be supported by firmly
grasping the eyepiece end. Never
handle by the distal end alone.
■Never bend the stainless steel
shaft. This could lead to breaks or
cracks in the rod lens system.
■Handle the telescope with care.
Hard knocks, particularly at the
distal end, may result in damage or
cracks in the telescope and allow
liquid, steam and other material to
penetrate. If so, the image will
appear foggy or have an unclear
visual area.
■To prevent damage when cleaning,
disinfecting and sterilizing the
telescope, it is recommended that
they be handled separately from
other instruments.
Cleaning
General Considerations – Adequate
reprocessing is contingent upon the
thoroughness of cleaning. Cleaning is
the initial step and sterilization occurs
later in reprocessing and is intended to
kill microorganisms to reduce the
likelihood of transmission and
possibilities of infection. To ensure
acceptable reprocessing, there should
be no delay between the steps in this
document.

8099/8099TU15 2012-11 English 11
Bloodborne Pathogens – Universal
precautions for handling this device
after use should be observed by all
hospital personnel according to OSHA
Standard 29 CFR 1910.1030,
Occupational Exposure to Bloodborne
Pathogens. Protective gloves and
eyewear should be worn throughout the
entire cleaning process.
Thorough Cleaning of this Device –
It is critical that this device is thoroughly
cleaned before its first use, and before
all subsequent uses, following the
specific cleaning steps listed in this
document. Ineffective or incomplete
cleaning can hinder subsequent
sterilization activities.
Automated Cleaning –
Caution: Prostiva RF Therapy
Telescopes MUST NOT be cleaned in
an ultrasonic bath or automatic washer.
These cleaning methods can damage
the telescope. This can make it
nonfunctional and require that it be
discarded.
Cleaning Agents – The use of a neutral
pH enzymatic cleaning agent is
recommended. This type of cleaner has
been shown to effectively remove
organic soils, such as blood and urine,
from this device. The following cleaning
instructions have been validated using
Enzol enzymatic detergent solution. In
addition, the following equipment (or
equivalent) is recommended:
■Lumen brush (2), soft nylon
bristled, 3.0-6.0 mm (1/8-1/4")
diameter (for cleaning adaptors)
■Instrument brush (2), soft nylon
bristled, 18.0-20.0 cm (7-8") length
(for cleaning scopes)
■Syringe, needleless (60.0 mL or
larger)
The following cleaning agents,
solutions, or tools should NOT be used
when cleaning this device:
■Saline solution
■Alkaline cleaning agents
■Solutions containing chlorine (eg,
bleach) or aldehydes (eg,
gluteraldehyde)
■Formalin, mercury, chlorides,
bromides, iodides, or ringers
solution
■Metal brushes or scouring pads
Cleaning and Rinsing Water – Use
warm tap water to clean this device.

12 English 2012-11 8099/8099TU15
Deionized water should be used for the
final rinse step to prevent mineral
deposits on the device surfaces.
Manual Cleaning Instructions
Cleaning Instructions: Point of Use –
DO NOT allow this device to dry after
use and prior to cleaning.
To prevent blood, urine and other
contaminants from drying on the
telescope, it should be placed in a
container with water immediately after
use. Do not put other instruments on top
of the telescope.
1. Disassemble any light cable
adaptors being used from the
telescope.
2. Rinse the telescope and light
cable adaptors for a minimum of
3 minutes with a steady stream
of warm tap water while
thoroughly scrubbing with a soft,
nylon bristled brush to remove
gross contaminants.
3. Using warm tap water (>18 °C
>70 °F), prepare an enzymatic
cleaning solution according to
the detergent manufacturer’s
instructions (Enzol=1.0 oz/
gallon).
4. Place telescope and light cable
adaptors in the cleaning solution,
completely submerged, and soak
for a minimum of 2 minutes.
5. After soaking, and while still
submerged, thoroughly scrub
with a second, soft, nylon bristled
brush to gently remove all
remaining visible contamination
from the telescope and light
cable adaptors. Flush
challenging areas (including the
connections near the ocular lens
assembly and adaptors) using a
needleless syringe completely
filled with warm tap water.
Repeat scrubbing and flushing as
necessary.
6. After cleaning, thoroughly rinse
the telescope and light cable
adaptors with de-ionized water
(>13 °C >55 °F) for a minimum of
2 minutes to remove detergent
residue.
7. Use a clean, absorbent, low-lint
wipe to dry the telescope and
light cable adaptors.
8. Visually inspect the telescope and
light cable adaptors:

dents along the shaft or
scratches on the lenses. Do

8099/8099TU15 2012-11 English 13
not use a telescope that shows
signs of damage.
■for any visible contamination.
Do not proceed with
sterilization of a contaminated
device. If any contamination is
still present, repeat the above
cleaning steps.
9. Upon completion of cleaning,
check the telescope image
quality for darkened, obstructed,
or foggy views. If there are no
signs of damage, proceed with
sterilization of the telescope.
Sterilization
Due to variations in hospital sterilizers,
precise instructions for sterilization or
aeration cannot be given here. If further
information is necessary regarding the
procedure to be used, contact the
manufacturer of the sterilizer unit. Use
biological indicators or other acceptable
methods to assist in validating the
effectiveness of the hospital’s sterilizer
unit.
Caution: Do not attempt to
sterilize the telescope before its first use
or after subsequent uses without first
thoroughly cleaning and removing any
organic material, blood or cleaning
solution. Failure to properly prepare the
telescope for sterilization will adversely
affect the sterilization process.
Routine autoclave or ethylene oxide
sterilization is recommended for
sterilization of the telescope.
The telescope may be sterilized by the
following methods:
Autoclave Sterilization
The telescope can be steam autoclaved
in accordance with the following

Informations relatives à la
sécurité
La liste des contre-indications, mises en
garde, précautions et effets
secondaires est fournie dans le guide
d’utilisation du système de la thérapie
Prostiva RF.
Mode d’emploi
Inspection
À réception, vérifier immédiatement que
le télescope ne présente aucun signe
de dommages. Inspecter également le
télescope de la thérapie Prostiva RF
avant et après chaque intervention. Les
signes de dommages les plus
identifiables sont des bosses sur le
corps et des éraflures sur l’objectif.
Regarder dans le télescope et le faire
tourner pour vérifier que la vision est
nette. Des éraflures, des traces de
doigts et des poussières affecteront la
vue.

Ceci pourrait
rompre ou fissurer le système de
lentilles cylindriques.
■Manipuler le télescope avec soin.
Les chocs trop violents, en
particulier au niveau de l’extrémité
distale, peuvent résulter en des
dommages ou des fissures du
télescope et permettre la
pénétration de liquides, vapeur ou
