Notice: Prior to installing, serious consideraon must
be taken to ensure this venlaon system will operate
properly if integrated with any other type of mechanical
system such as a forced air system or an air handling unit.
To ensure proper operaon and compabilies of both
systems, the airows of the Heat Recovery Venlator
(HRV) or Energy Recovery Venlator (ERV) must be
balanced by the installer, by following the procedures
found in this manual.
The way in which your HRV/ERV is installed may make a
signicant dierence to the electrical energy consumed
when operang. To minimize the electricity use of the
HRV/ERV, a stand-alone fully ducted installaon is
recommended. If you choose a simplied installaon that
operates your furnace or air handler for room-to-room
venlaon, electrical energy consumpon and operang
cost will be greatly reduced if the blower of the system's
furnace or air handler has an electronically commutated
(ECM) motor.
Limitations: The product is for residenal applicaons
only and must be installed in accordance with all naonal
and local regulaons, building and safety codes.

• To reduce the risk of injury, disconnect power to the
venlaon system while performing service on the
unit. There are impeller wheels turning at a very high
speed that must fully stop rotang prior to accessing
the inside of the unit.
• To reduce the risk of electric shock or re, do not
perform any service to the HRV system other than as
stated in the operang manual instrucons.
• To reduce the risk of electric shock, this venlaon
system comes equipped with a 3-prong plug. This plug
will t in a polarized 120VAC outlet in only one orienta-
on. Do not modify the power plug in any way;
if modied, there is risk of electric shock or re.
• Do not use the venlaon system for removal of
ammable fumes, gases or connect directly to any
appliances.
• Do not modify, repair or disassemble this system.
These tasks are to be performed by authorized serviced
personnel only. Fire, electrical shock and/or bodily injury
may result if these warnings are not followed.
• Always assess the operaon of the venlaon system
with regard to how it may interact with vented
combuson equipment (e.g. gas furnace, oil furnace,
combuson appliances)

Determine Your
Ventilation Needs
Good indoor air quality is based
in part on the capacity of the
home’s venlaon system.
The two most common
methods for determining the
venlaon needs of a home are
the Room Count Calculaon
method and the Air Change
Per Hour method. Both
methods calculate an
approximate venlaon rate
(in CFM or L/s). Their calculaon
methods are described on
this page.

Independent System Installation
From an Indoor Air Quality standpoint, this is the pre-
ferred method of installing a venlaon system in a home.
This installaon uses a dedicated duct system for both the
supply of fresh air and exhausng of stale air accumulated
in the home.
With an Independent System installaon, fresh air is
supplied to all bedrooms and living areas and stale air is
exhausted from the bathroom, kitchen and laundry room.
See Figure 1.
Important: For correct performance of your HRV or ERV,
the installaon of a 6" round galvanized backdra damper is
required on the ductwork supplying fresh air to the home.

Exhaust at the Source and Supply
in the Return
This applicaon uses a dedicated duct
system for exhausng the stale air
from the home. The fresh air is routed
to the return air duct and is distributed
through the home by the exisng
supply air ductwork of the forced-air
system. See Figure 2.
Make sure when using this installaon that
your fresh air duct connecon to the forced
air system return air duct is not less than 10 (3 m)
upstream of the return plenum connecon to the
forced-air system. Check with your local building codes
or the manufacturer of the forced-air system. The HRV
and forced-air system must be set to operate in connu-
ous mode to achieve maximum comfort and to avoid
cross-contaminaon.
Note to Installer: Dwellings with mulple forced-air
systems require one HRV/ERV per system.
Ensure the unit runs in conjuncon with the forced-air
system. Refer to wiring diagram for furnace interlock
instrucons.
* For minimum distance between return and forced-air system, check with
your local building codes or the manufacturer of the forced-air system.

Important: For opmal performance of your HRV or ERV,

When using this installaon, make sure that there is
minimum of 3 feet (0.9m) between the fresh air
and exhaust air connecons of the HRV/ERV in
the return air duct. See Figure 3. Make sure
when using this installaon that the fresh air duct
connecon to the forced-air system return air
duct is not less than 10 (3 m) upstream of the
return plenum connecon to the forced air system.
Check with your local code or the forced air system's
manufacturer. The HRV and forced-air system must be
set to operate in connuous mode to achieve maximum

Finding a Suitable Installation Location
The HRV/ERV unit should be installed in a mechanical room
or as close to an outside wall as possible. This would ensure
a short run of insulated exible duct.
The HRV/ERV unit must always be installed in an area where
the air is tempered to avoid freezing of the condensate
line. The contractor should install the unit in an area that
is accessible to allow the homeowner easy access for for
performing maintenance.
It is very important to install an electric receptacle (120VAC)
near the HRV/ERV. A separate circuit breaker is also recom-
mended. Installing the HRV/ERV close to a drain for the
condensate would avoid the need for a condensate pump.

Installation of the HRV/ERV
IMPORTANT Minimum installaon requirements:
a) Minimum two 2"x 4" (50.8 mm x 101.6 mm) wood
wall studs and minimum ⅜" (9.5 mm) thick drywall is
required to secure the HRV/ERV wall bracket.
b) Support for weight of 80 lbs, which includes HRV/
ERV, duct connecons and accessories. Proper instal-
laon requires that the unit be secured to the wall. If
there are no wall studs available, secure a sheet of ¾"
plywood to wall then fasten wall mounng bracket
to plywood.
Tip to installer: If the unit is not level, improper
drainage will occur and could lead to moisture and
leakage problems.
It is recommended that approximately 16 inches of exible
duct be installed between the HRV or ERV and your rigid
duct. The exible duct is connected to the HRV or ERV in
the same way as the insulated ex.
Insulated Flex from Unit to Outside Wall
Tip to installer: To ensure a beer installaon and to
avoid an undesired bend in the duct, align the exible duct
with the collar before securing over the four hooks on the
inner surfaces of the collar.
All ducng to and from the HRV/ERV must be adequately
insulated to minimize heat loss and gain. All tapes,
mascs, and nonmetallic clamps used for eld installaon
of exible ducts shall be listed and labeled to Standard UL
181B - Closure Systems for Use With Flexible Air Ducts and
Air Connectors.
Once insulated ex is aached to the collar, slide collar into
the keeper secon and aach collar to the unit with four,
#10 x 5/8" screws supplied in installaon kit to ensure a
proper seal. See Figures 9-13 on following page.

NOTE: Clean Comfort Venlators (HRV/ERV) that use a
fan shut down defrost sequence for frost protecon are
NOT equipped with a motorized outdoor air damper.
Special consideraon is required when one of the follow-
ing types of installaons is chosen:
a) Exhaust at the source and supply in the return air duct,
or
b) Exhaust and supply in the return air duct
The HRV/ERV must operate in the connuous venlaon
mode to avoid cold, uncondioned air being introduced
through the unit and directly into the furnace during
heang season. However if the homeowner chooses to
run the unit in Intermient (“INTER”) mode or turn it
“OFF”, cold supply air will be drawn in through the HRV/
ERV when the system’s blower fan is operang e.g. during
a heang cycle. We recommend installing a motorized
damper between the HRV/ERV supply air connecon
and the furnace’s return air duct that will automacally
close when the HRV/ERV is not operang. You may also
consider the installaon of a backdra damper on the
venlator’s exhaust air connecon to prevent cold air
inltraon.
Alternavely, installing a venlator that employs a
recirculang defrost sequence and is equipped with
an integrated motorized outdoor air damper, such as
the VH30120R or VH30160R, would avoid the problem
described above.

Condensation Drain Line
Insert the threaded drain adapter through the boom of the
HRV/ERV and hand ghten the plasc nut supplied with the
installaon kit. Use a wrench to ghten the nut another half turn
to ensure a complete seal.
Install the condensate line (included in installaon kit) by
pushing the clear plasc tubing over the drain adapter. Make
a condensate trap by looping the clear plasc tubing. The
funcon of this condensate trap is to prevent unpleasant odors
from entering the HRV/ERV. See Figures 14-15.

Ensure this trap will not be exposed to temperatures where the
condensate can freeze.
Supplying Power to the HRV/ERV
IMPORTANT: Only qualied service technicians should
install, repair, or service this HRV/ERV.
NOTE: If the LED light on the unit's control is lit (green),
but the unit's motors do not energize and the controls do
not operate, this indicates that the polarizaon in the main
power supply outlet is inverted. Correct polarity of supplied
power before connuing with the installaon.
Daikin recommends that the unit be connected to a dedi-
cated 120VAC receptacle; use of an extension cord to power
the unit is not recommended. If no receptacle is available
near the unit, have a licensed electrician install one.

level.

of a combuson source or a source of pollutants such as
a gas furnace, dryer, gas boiler, range hood, barbecue,

Installing Ventilation Hoods for
Fresh Air and Exhaust
Install the outside venlaon hoods at least 18 inches
(0.5 m) above ground level or above the ancipated
snow level, and we recommend with at least 6 
(1.8 m) between the fresh air intake and the exhaust.
Always properly seal the supply and exhaust hoods to
the exterior of the thermal envelope of the building
with caulk or other similar material to inhibit air leakage.
Note: Fresh air intake hoods shall be located to avoid
combuson sources or sources of pollutants such as:
