D) Basic Re uirements
or correct setup and operation of the system, the following items will be required :
2.5” SATA Hard disks (minimum 3 disks, 4 recommended, any capacity, 5V type only).
A client PC or laptop (running Windows 7 or later)
Ethernet Network (including network cables and a switch)
E) System Overview
COLDSTORE Compact is a hard disk array system specifically designed for video surveillance
storage. It uses our LAID sequential writing system, our S S sequential disk filing system and
custom-designed hardware and firmware to achieve a high-capacity, high-reliability, very low power
system ideally suited to surveillance storage.
COLDSTORE Compact itself is designed as a small
footprint unit designed for desktop use or wall-
mounting. The rear panel has VESA-compatible
mounting points on 75mm centres with M4 mounting
holes.
Compact has 8 x 2.5” disk bays accessible through the
lower front panel which can be detached by removing
the two socket-cap screws using the hex key provided
in the accessory pack.
Control and management of the system is carried out
from a client PC over a network connection using the
COLDSTORE Manager application program.
The side panel provides the 12V DC power and Gigabit Ethernet network connection as shown in
(G) below.
F) Wall Mounting
The Compact unit is designed for desktop use, for mounting in a wall-mounted cabinet, or for direct
wall-mounting using the VESA mounting holes on the back of the unit. or wall mounting, it is
recommended that a standard VESA mounting plate and wall bracket be used.
If the unit is to be used free-standing, it is already fitted with base feet to avoid damaging supporting
surfaces with the metal case.
We recommend that the unit is isolated from shock and vibration for reliable disk operation.
We recommend that the unit is secured using the wall mounting points provided. This also
reduces the likelihood of physical damage to hard disks when the unit is in operation.
The storage array should NOT be moved once powered up as this is very likely to cause disk
damage – this applies to all types of disk storage arrays, unless using olid- tate Drives.

G) System Connections
Once the unit is properly located, connect a network cable between your network
switch and the network connection on the COLDSTORE Compact (see side panel
photo on right). Ensure the power supply cable can reach the unit but DO NOT
IN ERT THE POWER JACK yet.
COLDSTORE Compact is designed for always-on operation and so there is no
ON/O switch. The system is powered and unpowered by connecting and
disconnected the power jack. ollow the steps below before powering up as
instructed.
The full control of the system using COLDSTORE Manager is not covered in this
Quick Start Guide – see COLDSTORE User’s Guide.
H) Disk Loading
The disk drive slots are accessed by unscrewing the front panel. Using the hex key provided,
unscrew the left and right screws, holding the vented plate to prevent it falling down as it is
released. Set the front plate aside and store the two screws carefully for re-assembly.
COLDSTORE Compact is delivered with 8 removable 2.5” disk
holders. These will normally be found in the disk holder slots in
the packaging.
Any make, model or capacity of 5V DC 2.5” SATA hard disk may
be used in COLDSTORE Compact. Note that older disk models
requiring 12V DC are not supported. or optimum use of disk
space, we recommend that all disks be of identical capacity.
ix the hard disks into the holders using the mounting
screws provided. Most disks have both base-mounting
and side-mounting screw holes. The COLDSTORE
Compact disk holders use the side-mounting screw holes.
Ensure that each disk is fitted to the holder in the correct
orientation. The base of the disk should mate with the
supporting tabs on the edges of the holder. The SATA
connector should face away from the holder as shown in
the photos on the right.
Use four screws per disk for secure mounting. Ensure
that the mountings screws provided are used and that the
screw heads are screwed in far enough into the
countersunk slot to allow the disk and holder assembly to
slide smoothly in and out of the disk slot guides.
Once secured into the disk holders, insert each of the
disks into the COLDSTORE Compact, using the guide slots
to ensure correct positioning. Gently slide the disk holder
into the slot, ensuring the holder is the correct way up (tab
at the top) then push firmly until the SATA connector
engages and the tab clicks into place.

Doc : CSTORE8C-QSG v1.25 COLDSTORE Compact Quick Start Guide 6
Ensure the system has not yet been switched on before mounting the first disks – the
COLD TORE Compact start up procedure requires a minimum of two disks to be present for full
boot-up and normal operation. If the system has been switched on in error, simply switch the
unit off by disconnecting the power jack before proceeding. Further disks can be added later
whilst the system is running.
COLDSTORE Compact requires at least two disks for set up and configuration. A minimum of three
disks are required for basic system operation (normal COLDSTORE mirrored overlapping-pair
mode), whilst four disks are the actual recommended minimum for full system operation (either
mirrored overlapping-pair mode or full mirrored-pair mode).
Carefully insert the disks in their holders into the Compact unit, starting from the left (Disk Slot 1)
and filling each slot in sequence with as many disks as required.
Disk insertion should not be forced and should take a medium pressure only. If the disk will
not engage, check that the holder is correctly aligned - the holder should run smoothly into the
top and bottom slots. Check also that the disks have been fixed into the holders the correct way
around.
After fitting all required disks, re-fit the vented front plate and secure with the two screws
previously set aside, using the hex key provided.
To remove a disk, push the tab (i.e. the top section of the holder) down, releasing the locating clip at
the top and simultaneously pull the disk and holder using the finger access cut-out areas in the
middle of the holder. Disengage the SATA connection by pulling on the holder and carefully slide
the disk and holder out of the disk slot. You may find this this easier to do with a finger pressing on
the tab and using the other hand to pull on the disk holder.
I) Power Up
Once the disks are properly loaded and the front plate re-attached, switch on COLDSTORE
Compact by inserting the power jack at the left side of the unit. The blue power-on LED will
illuminate to show that the power is on.
As COLDSTORE Compact boots, all of the green disk LEDs will illuminate (whether there is a disk
present in that slot or not), indicating that the system is booting up. After boot is complete, the
green LEDs will go out and the Compact will begin the disk check sequence. It will power up each
disk present in turn, log the details and capacity, and move onto the next disk, illuminating the green
LED above the disk slot as it does so. Normally it takes a few seconds to check each disk. Once all
disk checks are complete, COLDSTORE will switch to idle mode, ready and available for receiving
and recording data. In typical normal recording mode, two green LEDs will indicate the current disk
writing pair, or none if the system is idle (i.e. no data is being written to it).
or a complete explanation of the front panel LEDs operation and their meanings, see the following
section.
Once switched on, the unit should NOT be moved, as in common with any disk array type, this
may risk damage to disks in operation.

Doc : CSTORE8C-QSG v1.25 COLDSTORE Compact Quick Start Guide 7
J) Front Panel LEDs
There are eight pairs of LEDs on the front panel matching up with the eight disk slots. The left hand
LED of each pair is a Red/Green LED indicating disk status, whilst the right hand side ones are
Amber, indicating selection.
Green : Data being written to disk
Red : Disk fault
Amber : Disk selected
lashing Amber : Selected disk is ready for removal
Note that during the boot up sequence, all green LEDs will be lit simultaneously. After a shutdown
command is issed ( rom COLDSTORE Manager (see below), all the amber LEDs will be illuminated
simultaneously once the unit is ready for power disconnection.
K) COLDSTORE Manager
COLDSTORE Manager is a software utility which is provided for the setup of COLDSTORE and
COLDSTORE Compact. It enables configuration, firmware upgrades, status display and diagnostics.
The latest version of both COLDSTORE Manager and COLDSTORE system firmware can be
obtained by contacting Veracity (see www.veracityglobal.com). See the website for full version
compatibility details.
Run the COLDSTOREManagerSetup.exe file (v2.0.1 or later) to install.
Once installed, run the program. COLDSTORE Manager (CSM) includes a local help file. The
COLDSTORE Compact unit should be automatically detected on the network and displayed on the
list in the left hand window. Click on the COLDSTORE Compact unit 10.0.0.140 (default factory IP
address setting) to select the unit. The following screen will be displayed :
COLDSTORE Manager Main Screen

Doc : CSTORE8C-QSG v1.25 COLDSTORE Compact Quick Start Guide 8
If setting up a number of COLD TORE units, all units will have the same default IP address,
so connect them to the network one at a time for IP address setting and configuration to avoid IP
address conflicts.
The Array and Disk Status for this unit will be shown in the main window. Here you can check that
the loaded disks are visible and correct. See User’s Guide for notations.
If the COLDSTORE Compact is not automatically detected, you may manually enter the IP address
of the COLDSTORE by right-clicking in the list window and entering the IP address of the device in
the dialogue box which appears. If this does not work for any reason, see Troubleshooting.
L) System Configuration
Click on the Configuration tab in the main window to bring up this display :
COLDSTORE Configuration Manager Configuration Screen
You will be asked for the default username and password. These are as follows :
Username : admin
Password : admin
Enter the desired IP Address for Ethernet 0, then the network mask and the default gateway.
Enter the address of the primary NTP server on the network – NTP Server 1.
Note that COLDSTORE Compact only has 1 Ethernet port, unlike COLDSTORE 3U which has two
(Eth0 and Eth1).
Set the correct Time Zone for the geographical location of the COLDSTORE.

Doc : CSTORE8C-QSG v1.25 COLDSTORE Compact Quick Start Guide 9
Correct time-sync is essential for correct operation, depending upon the application. It is
strongly recommended that a master NTP time server system be used on the network.
Veracity’s TIMENET is an ideal device for this – see :
http://veracityglobal.com/products/networked-video-integration-devices/timenet.aspx
for full details.
Once the settings have been entered, click on Update to store the settings on COLDSTORE
Compact. or full details on how to use COLDSTORE Manager, see the online help file or the
COLDSTORE Compact User’s Guide.
M) Disk Management – Adding & Removing Disks
urther disks may be added to the array at any time, and these may be added with the system
either on or off. The new disks will be incorporated into the array automatically. No disk
configuration is required. Simply slide the disk & holder into the first empty drive slot and push
home, ensuring the holder is fully inserted and that upper tab clicks into place in the drive guide.
Removal of disks requires a simple, yet specific, procedure using COLDSTORE Manager. Please
refer to the COLDSTORE Compact User’s Guide.
To remove a disk from the array, follow the proper procedure as described in the
COLD TORE Compact User’s Guide. pecifically, do not remove disks when COLD TORE is
switched off. Failure to follow proper procedure will not result in data loss, but disks removed in
this way will require some manual intervention before they will be readable in DI KPLAY or other
U B docking station.
N) Powering Off
Use COLDSTORE Manager to shut down the system before removing the power connector. In
COLDSTORE Manager, select the COLDSTORE you wish to shut down, go to the Diagnostics tab,
and then click on the SHUT DOWN button at the bottom of the screen. You will be asked to
confirm.
The Compact unit will then go through a shutting-down procedure, writing any remaining data to
disk. When the shutdown process is completed, all the amber LEDs will illuminate simultaneously.
At this point the power jack may be disconnected or power switched off at the wall.
Do not remove the power jack or switch off at the wall socket before completing the
shutdown procedure via COLD TORE Manager. This ensures that all files are correctly closed.
O) Troubleshooting
No power
The blue LED on the side panel above the power jack will illuminate when power is present. If this is
not on, check that the power jack is correctly plugged in and that there is power coming into the in-
line PSU. Check the power cable is fully inserted into the PSU. Check that the wall socket is live by
plugging another device into it.

Doc : CSTORE8C-QSG v1.25 COLDSTORE Compact Quick Start Guide 10
No disk
If there are no disks present, COLDSTORE will not be able to operate. Please shut down the unit
(see section N above), disconnect the power jack and add at least two, preferably three disks to the
array as described above.
COLD TORE Compact does not appear in the COLD TORE Manager list
Open a Command Line window on the client PC and ping the COLDSTORE IP address. If there is no
response, check the network and the client PC network settings.
If the ping is successful, try searching for the IP address by right-clicking on the system list window
and select add COLDSTORE. Enter the IP address in dialogue and click OK. If this still fails to
connect to COLDSTORE, check your firewall settings and the network switch configuration or
contact your IT Network Administrator.
Disk fail
Any disk drive failure will result in a red LED highlighting the failed drive. Extract the disk tray from
the array (no special procedure required for a failed disk, and no need to switch off the system).
Remove the failed disk from the tray, clearly label it and set it aside. it a spare disk to the tray and
re-insert into the empty disk slot. The new disk will be automatically incorporated into the array.
Disk failure in COLD TORE should be a rare occurrence. If a disk has failed on first use
within the array, it may already have been faulty or may have been handled incorrectly during
assembly. It is essential that all disks are handled carefully, are not dropped or even knocked
against hard objects, including table surfaces. If a disk has been dropped it should NOT be used
to store critical data. The most common cause of early disk failure is rough handling of the disk
prior to installation in a disk array. All disk manufacturers provide free test programs which may
be downloaded from their websites to check disk health. If you are unsure of the status of a disk,
it is strongly recommended that it be tested first before use.
For recommendations on processing failed disks, see the COLD TORE User’s Guide.
P) System Transportation
If the unit is to be transported for any reason, it is recommended that the original packaging be
retained for this purpose. All warranties will be void if the product is transported in sub-standard
packaging.
