SAFETY NOTICES
This is analytical laboratory equipment; please use the following laboratory practices:
Do not allow gas lines to become kinked or punctured.
Place lines away from foot traffic and extreme heat or cold.
Store gases in clearly-labeled cabinets.
Run all vents and exhaust lines external to the logging unit or work area.
NOTE The CP-4900 is a laboratory grade instrument. As such it should be handled
with care to avoid excessive vibration and mechanical shock or impact.
NOTE All stainless steel tubing used with the chromatograph should be
chromatograph grade.
NOTE Do not touch the knobs on the back of the Baseline 8900. If they are adjusted,
the flow calibration will be incorrect and the instrument will have to be sent
back to Baseline for recalibration
NOTE After powering the instrument down, wait a minimum of 30 seconds to power
the instrument up again. Failure to do so may cause damage to the
instrument
NOTE Do not power on the Baseline 8900 without the proper support gases
connected. Doing so may cause damage to the instrument.

BASELINE 8900 CHROMATOGRAPH SETUP
1) Apply Zero Air, Hydrogen, and sample to the instrument at correct pressures

2) Connect a null serial cable from the Baseline 8900 to the operations computer
3) Connect a power cable to the Baseline 8900 and plug it into a UPS providing 110VAC power
4) Flip the power switch on the back of the Baseline 8900 to the “On” position
5) Allow the Baseline unit approximately 20 minutes to warm up. The front screen on the
instrument will indicate when the warm up time is over

SKYCHROM OVERVIEW
In order to operate the Baseline 8900 chromatograph, software from Baseline, called Skychrom, must be
used. The software requires a method and a sequence detailed in the sections SKYCHROM METHOD and
SKYCHROM SEQUENCE
For operation, the sequence loop will be used in order to continuously run the sequence and
communicate the data to WellWizard. Should the flame go out, the Ignite flame button may be used to
reignite the flame without needing to navigate through the front menu on the instrument. The run may
be stopped instantly, or the run may be allowed to continue to the end of the sequence using the stop
buttons. Refer to Figure 4, for information on the purpose of each menu button.

If the alarm on the instrument is triggered, it may be acknowledged via the software by going to
Instrument->Acknowledge Alarm, as seen in Figure 5.

SKYCHROM METHOD
In order to create a new method, navigate to the top menu bar to File->New…->Method. From this
menu, a generic method may be created, a method may be created from an already saved method on
the computer (useful for changing communication ports on already preconfigured methods), or the
method from the device may be downloaded and modified. Refer to Figure 6 to see the menu in the
Skychrom software.

The method has several important settings that must be properly set up in order for the Baseline 8900
to function optimally. The method main parameters indicates what will happen when the instrument is
operated. In Figure 7, The correct operational parameters are shown and, in addition, the captions
indicate how to modify the parameters should any changes be required. For higher gas concentrations, a

“GAIN_L” will be used at the 002 second mark instead to ensure that the peak of the gas does not get
cut off, giving inaccurate results.

When the chromatograph is running, there is always some baseline noise. In order to ensure that that
noise is not read by the chromatograph, Skychrom has a noise filter located in the “Perform” tab of the
method. As shown in Figure 8, the noise counts should be set to ignore any readings below 300 counts.
This value may be adjusted if needed for a very low concentration, or in a low gain method, but for the
standard medium gain method 300 counts ensures readability for low concentrations while still filtering
out extra results caused by noise.

In addition to the noise filter found in the perform tab, a spline may be applied in order to smooth out
the chromatogram. In Figure 9, an example of a spline may be seen along with details of how to add one
to the method. This is useful for increasing accuracy as well as aiding the noise filter in reducing any
unwanted noise peaks from being read in the software.

SKYCHROM SEQUENCE
In order to operate, the Baseline 8900 must also have a sequence. A very basic sequence of receiving
the sample from sample port 001 is all that is required for operation and a loop of this sequence will be
used for operation. The export button must be clicked in order for the results of this sequence to export
to WellWizard. Chromatograms may also be saved under certain circumstances, or all chromatograms
may be saved using the bullet menu on the right of the sequence window as seen in Figure 10. The CHM
button will allow a title to be applied to those saved chromatograms and will be seen in the file window
at the bottom of the window.

All sequences must be saved in order to function. In order to do this, the sequence window must remain
open in Skychrom and the user must navigate to the “Sequence” at the top menu. Select “Save as” and
save the sequence. Figure 11 demonstrates this process.

BASELINE 8900 CALIBRATION
In order to calibrate the Baseline 8900, it should be setup just like normal operation except that a
calibration gas bottle with flow meter will be used instead of the sample line. This setup is shown in
Figure 12. The pressure on the regulator should be set to 10psi and the flow meter should be set to a
minimum of 3 SCFH. Allow the chromatograph to run several cycles with the calibration gas in order to
ensure that the reading has become steady. Once the reading has become steady, press the “stop at end
of sequence” button and turn off the calibration gas supply while performing the software calibration.

After the chromatograph has stopped running, go to “Edit” on the top menu and select “Curr. Method”
from the drop down menu as shown in Figure 13.
