ACDelco Flooded PowerSports Batteries
Charging Instructions:
New Battery Testing:
When checking the condition of a new battery prior to installation,
ACDelco recommends only measuring open circuit voltage (OCV).
ACDelco recommends a minimum installation OCV of 12.4volts.
1. Batteries that fall below 12.4 volts should be recharged, prior to
installation.
2. The battery should be tested with a known, good Digital Volt Ohm
Meter (DVOM).
3. When testing side terminal or top stud batteries, always use Lead
(Pb) terminal adapters. Make sure the terminal adapter makes
good contact with the Lead pad of the battery or inaccurate
readings will result. Basic hand tools may be needed to ensure
the terminal is tight.
4. Never use steal bolts/nuts/washers, etc., when testing a side
terminal battery.
5. Never clamp the tester’s leads directly to the threads when
testing a top stud battery with a conductance tester.
Charging Instructions:
1. Battery Preparation
a. Place battery on a flat surface in a well-ventilated area.
i. Remove red vent plug and discard.
***WARNING! *** Do not reattach red plug after filling battery
with acid!
ii. Remove plastic vent caps and retain.

INSTRUCTION SHEET
2. Filling Instructions
a. Fill battery with acid to upper level (a). Let battery stand for 60
minutes before charging. Gently move battery from side-to-side to
release any air bubbles between the plates. If acid level has fallen,
refill with acid to upper level.
NOTE: This will be the last time electrolyte (acid) should be added.
Return unused acid to the place where you purchased the battery
or neutralize acid with an equal amount of baking soda.
3. Charging Instructions
a. An initial charge is required before placing this battery into service.
For best results and maximum life, use a 500 mA Trickle Charger
(see chart for the proper charging time for your battery). To prevent
accidental release of acid during charging, place caps loosely over
access ports. Charge for the period of time indicated in the chart.
At the end of the charging time, the battery should gas freely.
Replace caps firmly, wash off any acid spillage with water and dry
battery.
b. Check the battery voltage after correct charging time and let stand
for 1-2 hours. Voltage should read 12.70 on a 12 volt battery of
6.35 on a 6 volt battery. If voltage is below specified voltage,
continue charging for an additional 40% of the total charging time
(example: 40% of 10 hrs. original charging time = 4 hrs. additional
charging time).
NOTE: If you have a 2 Amp or a 6 Amp charger, use the automatic
setting and charge until charger indicates complete charge or
battery gases freely. The voltage should read 12.70 V or 6.35 V.
Replace vent caps firmly, wash off any acid spillage with water and
dry battery.
c. After charging, attach clear vent tube. Be sure there are no bends
and that tube is free of blockage.

INSTRUCTION SHEET
WARNING!
Do not exceed Charging Guidelines that are listed on the chart.
Prolonged charging or use of a constant current charger could shorten
battery life.
4. Removal/Installation
a. Remove old battery. Mark which cable is connected to the Positive
(+) and Negative (-) posts. Clean cable terminals with wire brush or
sandpaper to remove oxidation. Position new fully charged battery
on tray, connect clear vent tube to battery, ensuring there are no
crimps, folds or blockages. Replace hold down.
b. Connect terminals:
i. Positive (+) red cable from ignition to Positive Post.
ii. Negative (-) black cable from engine or chassis to Negative
Post.
Charging Guidelines:
Using a charger with an output of 1.0amps the initial charge time of the
battery will be approximately 1/2 to 1x the amp hour rating for that
battery. Full charge voltage for a flooded battery is approximately 12.7V
to 12.8V.

INSTRUCTION SHEET
Checking Open Circuit Voltage:
OCV may be used to estimate the Lawn and Garden battery state-of-
charge. Observe the following guidelines:
Use a voltmeter that has been verified as accurate. An
inaccurate meter will give inaccurate results. The meter should
read to the nearest 0.01 volts.
When checking OCV, the vehicle engine and all current drains
must be OFF. Any current flow into or out of the battery will
cause an incorrect voltage reading.
The battery must be stabilized before reading the OCV. If the
battery has been charged or used in a vehicle in the past 12
hours, remove the surface charge (apply a 300amp load for 15
seconds). If the battery has just been discharged, allow at
least 15 seconds for the voltage to stabilize, then read the
OCV.
Use the following table to estimate the state-of-charge based
on the battery temperature:

*Estimates Only. Batteries vary +10% by model.
Keep batteries at 65% of full charge or higher. If the OCV falls
below 12.4V, recharge the battery.
IMPORTANT: When a battery needs charging, always charge
it fully. If you don’t:
Retests with electronic testers may be inaccurate.
Full shelf life will not be available if returned to
storage.
