CONSUMER INFORMATION SHEET FOR PLAYGROUND
SURFACING MATERIALS
Playground equipment should never be placed on hard surfaces such as concrete or
asphalt and while grass may appear to be acceptable it may quickly turn to hard packed
earth in areas of high traffic. Shredded bark mulch, wood chips, fine sand or fine gravel are
considered to be acceptable shock absorbing surfaces when installed and maintained at a
sufficient depth under and around playground equipment.
X3.2 Table X3.1 lists the maximum height from which a child would not be expected to sustain a life-
threatening head injury in a fall onto four different loose-fill surfacing materials if they are installed and
maintained at depths of 6, 9, and 12 in. However, it should be recognized that all injuries due to falls cannot be
prevented no matter what surfacing material is used.
X3.3 It is recommended that a shock absorbing material should extend a minimum of 6 ft in all directions from
the perimeter of stationary equipment such as climbers and slides. However, because children may deliberately
jump from a moving swing, the shock absorbing material should extend in the front and rear of a swing a
minimum distance of 2 times the height of the pivot point measured from a point directly beneath the pivot on the
supporting structure.
X3.4 This information is intended to assist in comparing the relative shock-absorbing properties of various
materials. No particular material is recommended over another. However, each material is only effective when
properly maintained. Materials should be checked periodically and replenished to maintain correct depth as
determined necessary for your equipment. The choice of a material depends on the type and height of the
playground equipment, the availability of the material in your area, and its cost.
9 This information has been extracted from the CPSC publications “Playground Surfacing -Technical Information
Guide” and “Handbook for Public Playground Safety.”

Warning
Please instruct children not to use the equipment in a manner other than
intended.
Installation Instructions and Information -
Place the equipment on level ground, not less than 6 ft (1.8 m) from any structure or
obstruction such as a fence, garage, house, overhanging branches, laundry lines, or electrical
wires.
Do not install home playground equipment over concrete, asphalt, packed earth, or any other hard
surface. A fall onto a hard surface can result in serious injury to the equipment user.
Operating Instructions -
Observing the following statements and warnings reduces the likelihood of serious or fatal injury.
We recommend on-site adult supervision for children of all ages Instruct children not to walk close to, in front of,
behind, or between moving items.
Instruct children not to twist swing chains or ropes or loop them over the top support bar since this may reduce
the strength of the chain or rope.
Instruct children to avoid swinging empty seats.
Teach children to sit in the center of the swings with their full weight on the seats.
Instruct children not to use the equipment in a manner other than intended.
Instruct children not to get off equipment while it is in motion.
Parent to dress children appropriately (examples would include the use of well-fitting shoes and the
avoidance of ponchos, scarfs, and other loose-fitting clothing that is potentially hazardous while using
equipment).
Instruct children not to climb when the equipment is wet.
Check the openings between rollers and sliding surfaces of roller slides for foreign materials that could be
potentially hazardous to users.
Verify that suspended climbing ropes, chain, or cable cannot be looped back on itself.
Instruct children not to attach items to the playground equipment that are not specifically designed for use with
the equipment, such as, but not limited to, jump ropes, clothesline, pet leashes, cables and chain as they may
cause a strangulation hazard.
Maintenance Instructions -
Check all nuts and bolts twice monthly during the usage season for tightness and tighten as required. It is
particularly important that this procedure be followed at the beginning of each season.
Remove plastic swing seats and take indoors or do not use when the temperature drops below 23°F (-5°C).
Oil all metallic moving parts monthly during the usage period.
Check all coverings for bolts and sharp edges twice monthly during usage season to be certain they are in place.
Replace when necessary. It is especially important to do this at the beginning of each new season.
Check swing seats, ropes, cables and chains monthly during usage season for evidence of deterioration.
Replacement should be made in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
Sand rusted areas on tubular members and repaint using a nonlead-based paint meeting the requirements of
Title 16 CFR Part 1303.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR ASSEMBLY, MAINTENANCE AND USE OF TP TOYS
Please read carefully and keep all enclosed information for future reference.
1. ASSEMBLY AND SAFETY INFORMATION
TP toys must be assembled by an adult. They must be erected exactly in accordance with the
assembly instructions. Enlisting the aid of a helper will make assembly easier. This pack may contain
small parts and is not suitable for children under 36 months until fully assembled. We recommend that you
place small parts on a tray, or something similar, to prevent the frustration and disappointment of mislaying
them. Please take care during assembly as the manufacturing process can sometimes result in the occasional
sharp edge and small pieces of waste metalwork. Should there be any missing parts, the toy must not be used until
replacement parts have been fitted - the TP Customer Services line is +44 (0)1299 872804.
2. SITING
Under no circumstances should any of our toys be positioned on a hard surface, unless the ground under the toy plus the
recommended freespace area is covered with a safety surface (please refer to diagram on page 8). The toy should ideally be
sited with grass, sand or a recommended play surface covering the freespace area. A fall onto a hard surface can result in
serious injury. TP toys should be sited on level ground away from the house, overhanging branches, laundry lines, electrical wires
or any other similar obstruction. Installing your playset on sloping ground can cause it to lean or ‘rack.’ This puts additional stress on
all the connections and joints and in time will cause them to fail. This is not covered by any guarantee.
3. USAGE
TP toys are designed and made to be used by children aged between 12 months and 12 years, unless otherwise stated, and must
not be used by anybody else. TP toys are designed for family outdoor domestic use only.
4. SUPERVISION
Children should always be supervised while they are playing on TP toys and should be instructed not to use the toy in an
inappropriate or hazardous manner. Make sure they do not wear loose-fitting clothing or jewellery that can catch or snag. Children
should not wear cycle helmets while playing on TP toys.
5. PLAYING IN WET CONDITIONS
Many surfaces can become slippery in wet or icy conditions. Lips, tongues and wet skin can stick to metalwork in very cold weather.
Therefore, in these conditions children must not be allowed to use the toy. Extra caution and supervision is required when combining
water (eg. paddling pools, aqua slides, etc.) with outdoor play.
6. MAINTENANCE
With all toys it is vital that the equipment is checked regularly and often by an adult. The complete toy should be checked at least
once a month, and particular attention should be paid to the suspension system, ropes, and all fittings, bolts, nuts, and shackles,
etc. If any parts exhibit signs of wear and tear, they may need to be replaced. Failure to do this may result in the product
malfunctioning and causing injury. If a sharp edge or protruding bolt is found, saw and file it down until flush and smooth. Children
must not be allowed to use the toy until properly installed and checked.
Galvanised tubular products - This range of TP toys is made from either zinc-coated or hot-dipped galvanised tubing. If surface rust
appears it should be removed with either a wire brush or coarse sandpaper, and the area treated with a cold galvanising paint such
as Galvafroid or Polygalv. These are two well-known names, although other makes of paint are available from most hardware or DIY
stores.
7. SWING FRAMES
These must always be used with the stakes provided. If the stakes do not give enough hold, we recommend that you concrete them
in place. Never set the legs of a swing frame in concrete.
8. SWINGING TOYS (Swing Seats, Trapeze Bars & Rings, etc.)
TP swing frames and some climbing frames employ nylon bush bearings. Swing accessories should be fitted to these in accordance
with the original product instructions. When fitting swinging toys it is vital that moving parts have no metal to metal contact. Children
should be instructed not to pass in front of or behind moving items, not to twist or swing an empty swing seat, and not to get off a
swinging toy when it is in motion.
9. ROPES (Swings, Nets, Rope Ladders, etc.)
These ropes will degrade over time. This can be recognised by the rope becoming pale in colour and giving off a fine powder when
rubbed. When either of these signs appears, the toy should be withdrawn from use. Products where the rope is joined with
aluminium crimp will need to be completely replaced.
10. SLIDES
TP slides are manufactured with a UV stabiliser which prolongs their life. Always check that the slide is not hot from the sun before
allowing children to play. If the slide is hot, pour cold water down the slide until it feels cool to touch. Check the slide several times
during extended play.
11. FIRE RISKS AND DISPOSAL
Never allow TP toys to be placed or used near a fire. When it becomes necessary to dispose of your equipment, remove all bolts
and disassemble. Store out of the reach of children until it can be properly disposed of.
These instructions are issued in the interest of child safety, and we do ask you to follow our advice.
