Aerosol Treatments and your Cat
Aerosol medications delivered by metered dose inhalers (MDIs)
or puffers have been used to treat human respiratory conditions
since the 1960s. Because feline respiratory diseases imitate
human conditions, they can be treated in a similar way.2
However, because typical puffers deliver a dose at over 60 miles
per hour3, effective delivery of the medication to cats without an
aerosol chamber is very difficult.
When the
AeroKat*
FAC is attached to the puffer it allows your
cat to breathe normally and inhale the aerosol medication so
that the medicine goes deep into your cats lungs where it is
needed. Without the
AeroKat*
FAC, your cat may not receive
the benefit of the medication as the majority of it will be trapped
in its mouth or throat.

The

Feline Aerosol
Chamber (FAC) is designed to
be used along with a puffer
to deliver aerosol medication
to your cat.

How can I purchase the
AeroKat*
FAC?
Many veterinarians carry the
AeroKat*
FAC in their
clinic, but you may also purchase it through our website
(www.aerokat.com). Please speak with your cat’s
veterinarian before purchasing in order to ensure the
AeroKat*
FAC is suitable for your cat’s condition.
How does the
AeroKat*
FAC work?
The
AeroKat*
FAC holds the puffer (corticosteroid or
bronchodilator) medication in the chamber allowing your
cat to inhale using multiple breaths. In addition, the
chamber separates the coarse aerosol particles (which
tend to deposit in the mouth and nose) so the finer, more
beneficial particles are delivered deep into the lungs
where they are needed.
What medications can I use with the
AeroKat*
FAC?
The
AeroKat*
FAC is designed for use with all
commonly prescribed Metered Dose Inhalers (MDIs) or
puffers as determined by your veterinarian.
Why would I use this over traditional
oral steroids?
Traditional oral corticosteroids (pills, injection or syrup) have
many serious potential side-effects for your cat including
pancreatitis, insulin resistance (diabetes), polyuria, cystitis,
inappropriate urination and behavioural changes.1
Is there a reason that
my cat could not use
the
AeroKat*
FAC?
There are no specific
contraindications for the
AeroKat*
FAC in cats.
The principle behind the
AeroKat*
FAC is based on
aerosol (puffer) drug delivery
currently used in humans,
horses and dogs. The product
should only be used if
recommended by a veterinarian.

Feline Asthma
Does your cat suffer
from asthma related
symptoms?
If your cat experiences any of
the following symptoms they
may be suffering from feline
asthma:
•frequent wheezing
•persistent coughing
•open mouth or labored breathing
Approximately one in one hundred cats has asthma – perhaps
more, as the symptoms are often confused with hairballs.
Asthma usually affects cats between 2 and 8 years of age with
Siamese and Himalayan breeds having a higher prevalence.

The
Flow-Vu*
indicator on the
AeroKat*
FAC
will help you count the number of breaths your cat
has taken through the chamber and ensure that
there is a satisfactory mask seal. This helps to
ensure that the aerosol medication is delivered
to the deepest part of your
cat’s lungs.
When the
Flow-Vu*
indicator flutters or moves
toward your cat, the cat is
inhaling – this is when you
should press the inhaler.
When the inhalation
stops, the
Flow-Vu*
indicator
returns to
the vertical
position. This
increased
control will help
you better
manage your
cat’s asthma.
